Just got the Bao Bei Bowl and it was plenty! The pork belly was not too fatty at all and there was plenty of meat. Almost every bite I took had meat. In fact, I really think there was more meat than rice. The meat juices coated the rice nicely. I enjoyed the pickled veggies and wished there was more. I'll be back soon to try some of the other items. Note: If ordering online for pick up, go directly to the restaurant's website. DoorDash was more expensive.
This little baby has been one of the best eats I've had in so long: friendly employees, generous and delicious helpings or food at Affordable prices (!), and cutesy decor! We ordered just about a little of everything that day and everything was Spectacular! The meat was sooo tender and tasty; Mama enjoyed the pickled mustard greens! The swirly buns reminded me of childhood. The kids enjoyed the piece a$$ piece of fried chicken! Def recommend and def coming back! *Daily specials! When we went, it was free wontons wit any order $30+
Had a nice experience here and there's a large parking lot outside. You can eat inside or outside with bathrooms inside. You order at the counter and they bring you the food (optional tip). The food was pretty good. Fried chicken was crispy and the pork belly was soft. The spicy wontons were not that spicy and could use more flavor since the main taste was the chili oil. The swirly buns came nice and warm and soft which went very well with the condensed milk. The shaved ice was a good portion size and perfect for sharing as a dessert. I like how they have different deals every day of the week.
A cute little restaurant that's tucked away in the back of the shopping center. There's plenty of seating for parties of 2-6 people. The style of the restaurant is more casual, order up front and find your own seats and food will be brought to you. There's cute customer made anime drawings throughout the store that adds to the fun of the space there! I had gotten both the pork bao and the spicy chicken bao! Both were great! The chicken bao, this was petty good, it was a thin cut, moist chicken breast, that's deep fried and seasoned with great spices! I got "spicy" but honestly wasn't actually spicy, it had good spice but wouldn't consider it spicy. I'd personally would love to see something like a whole fat chicken breast or thigh with more juices but I understand that this more of a traditional Taiwanese style fried chicken. Overall good toppings and flavor, solid 4/5! The pork bao! Wow talk about an amazingly tender piece of pork! It was cooked perfectly, melted in your mouth goodness! Good portion of pork cut up into slices on the sandwich! 4.5/5!! Overall, you can get a decent fill of a meal with two bao, but I could prob eat 3 and still want a little more, The cucumber salad was good, I should've read the menu a little more carefully bc I wasn't a fan of the woodear mushrooms and would've wanted only cucumbers. But other than that, I'd totally recommend and would go again for a delicious handcrafted bao!
I really enjoyed the name of this restaurant and knew I wanted to take my girlfriend here because she is my bao bei. Before entering the restaurant, there was a large crowd. We thought it would be a long line, but rather it was a smash bros tournament! It was pleasant to see a restaurant like this host a community event. We ordered the bao bei bun, spicy chicken bun, and bao bei bowl. There was not a long wait line, and indoor seating was available. The bowl tasted like visiting a friends house and enjoying a meal their mom cooked us food. It was a homy vibe and the meat was very tender and nice. The buns were equally delicious and were soft and fluffy. The bao bei bun and bao bei bowl have the same meats, so we recommend to get either or. The chicken bun was the highlight for us. Its sauce reminded me of home and the chicken was extra crispy. We will be back again!

It's rich but still balanced, and every bite feels well thought out. The tofu bao is just as good and proves you don't need meat for great flavor. The braised tofu is savory and pairs perfectly with the fresh toppings and pillowy bun, making it a great option for anyone, not just vegetarians. If you want something more filling, the fried chicken bowl, bao bei bowl and the pork chop bowl are great choices. The chicken is crispy and well seasoned, served over rice for a hearty and satisfying meal. Overall, Bao Bei keeps things simple and does them really well, with bold flavors and comforting dishes that are easy to come back to.
I've been a fan of Bao Bei since moving to the area and they were operating out of a commissary kitchen. I still love them, the bao buns are perfection--fresh and well made, quite literally the perfect texture. The pork is always melt in your mouth amazing and the tofu version is delicious - both varieties are excellent. Since they've opened the brick & mortar, I've consistently come back for the (spicy) Taiwanese fried chicken which is delightful. On my most recent visits I've tried the crab wontons which sadly fall short of my expectations but to their credit I appreciate that they're working through new items and ideas. As for the space, it is cute and gives me all the late 90s/00s anime nostalgia, and I appreciate it's character authenticity there. Until next time! As always I'm looking forward to satisfying the bao or fried chicken craving.
Was craving Taiwanese street food after seeing IG content from Eric Sze and remembered Bao Bei existed! We ordered some items to go and had our craving satisfied. Super cute inside, def want to come back and snack/ hang out. -Popcorn chicken: nice and crunchy and lots of Thai basil. When I was younger, popcorn chicken didn't have red chili powder but it seems like that's standard nowadays. Good but I think Jumbo Jumbo's is better. Hope this isn't a seasonal thing bc it was my favorite! The big XL fried chicken is cool too but I prefer the snackiness of this. -Bao Bei bowl: good portion and tasty! Wish the pork belly had more of an anise or sweet taste, but the fattiness was perfect and soaked through the rice. Loved the presentation and ease of eating this. (Usually Lu rou fan to go is in a circular deli container with everything crowded/messy) Perfectly chewy short grain rice too. -Scallion sesame bread: fluffy and crispy, great texture but a little salty/spiced. Maybe it had 5 spice or white pepper in it? Threw me off a little. Cool take instead of scallion pancakes. -Mango sago drink: reminded me of mango lassi but without the yogurt. A bit too sweet, and didn't get any pomelo flavor. Overall, a great spot you should def check out! Parking was easy and we would love to come back and try the baos (we had them during covid but not in the new place yet!) and other goodies. So glad a place like this exists in Rockville!
A tasty Christmas Eve lunch! They were offering The Goons as a special for the day. They were crispy and ended up reheating well in my toaster oven the next day. We ordered a ton of things in celebration of the brick and mortar location. Flavors were fresh and portions were large. The Mango Sago drink was tasty. They had a promotion going on so we received the swirly buns for free. They were a little dry the next day but the sweetened condensed milk icing was helpful. The team is very friendly and brought two cups of water to our table. The owner was also visiting with guests at their tables. The artwork on the wall is fun. Plenty of parking and two gender neutral bathrooms.
In downtown Rockwall, it's wonderful that a fast casual Taiwanese place exists. You need to search it out to find it but once you are there, you'll be pleasantly surprised with the crispy chicken nuggets and the warm soft bowel buns filled with delicious crispy pork belly. I definitely will be returning. Perhaps next time I hit Old Navy.

Ok so I have been seeing Bao Bei TikToks ALL over my timeline and I knew I had to stop by. I wasn't even sure that I liked Bao but I wanted to try. I actually planned my Sunday activities around stopping her for lunch. I'm glad I did. I ordered the Spicy Chicken Bao Bun and a side of the Swirly Buns. The portion size was great and the flavor was so good. I think it would've been even better with a side of tater tots or something similar. The Swirly Buns were good too. Not too sweet and really soft. Overall, I really enjoyed my visit. The food was good, customer service was great, and I liked the decor. Also, to add the cherry on top of my visit, I met the owner, Chef Kevin. He was really polite and just as handsome as he is in the TikToks. I would go back to try more items. read more

我上個月回台灣，昨天第一次到店裡吃 Bao Bei，感覺又再次回到老家。 滷肉飯很道地，滷蛋一吃就知道滷了很久，而且加上榨菜就有那一種台灣小吃店的口感。 我們一家三人點了兩個掛包一份滷肉飯一份鹽酥雞，每樣都超好吃。母親節來這一天也送了一個甜點。 最後還點了一個 Black Sugar Swirl Bun. 比我在台灣吃得都好吃。每次吃到那種饅頭都沒有味道，但是寶貝的每一口都有一點甜也不會太甜。 只要喜歡吃台菜的人都強力推薦！ read more

Been a fan of Bao Bei for years now -- even as they were hidden away in the ghost kitchen. I rarely ever steer away from the buns themselves, which is what they're known for. The classic pork bao or their tofu bao... they're both incredible. I love how they use natural ingredients to get that orange/yellow-ish color of the bao with the tofu bun. If I recall, I think it was carrots or something? Anyways, the textures and flavors of all the elements of the buns have always been on point. Back during the ghost kitchen days, it pained me that I had to rush to eat them since I live so far away and there was literally nowhere to sit to eat them otherwise. That texture and temperature change so fast! But thankfully that is no longer a problem now that the Castle has been established. Outside of the buns, I have dabbled... the swirly buns are fantastic to me -- they're not too sweet but they give the perfect amount of satisfaction. The Bao Zi is a nice change of pace and I enjoy them as well. Around the time I had that, I also got to try the cucumber and wood ear salad, which I confess I'm not the biggest fan of. But not because it wasn't good -- I'm just not a fan of mushrooms, and it was my first time having this kind. Now, I really enjoyed the bao bowl, almond tofu, and pickled cabbage. And if you haven't seen the Castle space... go see it. It's a vibe, especially if you're into Maplestory & Pokemon :). read more
For a Tuesday night, the place was not busy at all. Looks like this place would be nice to get some work done. The cashier was friendly. The food itself came out warm and I thought it was really good! Mango sago w/ pomelo 9/10: all the drinks were in the fridge. I do wonder how long they stay in there. Wish there was more pomelo in it. But great taste! Bao bei bao 9/10: soft bun!! This was enough to make me full. The meat is squishy and soft. Bao bei bowl 10/10: I think I enjoyed this more because of the rice. The rice itself was also soft but not in a soggy way. The rice really completes the meal. read more

Absolutely delicious! I waited till the opening craze died down to try this place and I'm so glad that I did. Big servings, delicious flavor = oh my goodness! The bowl and bao are the same, just in a different form. I really liked the softness of the bao and it pairs perfectly with the fillings. I'd pass on the pumpkin cinnamon roll (it might've been a seasonal thing). It was really dry and not worth the money. read more

Trust the photo. Order your Bao. The pork belly is very tender - I've been on a rice bowl kick lately but every now and then just get the bao. I also had the mochi and it was the softest freshest mochi I've ever had. Service is always great. Lots of easy parking spots. read more

GET THE BAO BEI BOWL. Such supple braised pork bits and the braised sauce melts over the white rice. So tasty. Loved the marinated egg in it too -- light soy flavor, yum. I also loved how the pickled mustard greens add a nice pickled salty flavor to the sweet and savory braised sauce. Ugh thinking about it still weeks later. Also really enjoyed the XL fried chicken. Reminded me of the fried chicken I had in Taiwan. Lowkey prefer this over popcorn chicken because there's so much chicken meat surface area lol. Love how Taiwanese fried chicken tastes - so salty and delectable, yum. Bao buns were good too, but I preferred the bowl. Same toppings for the most part, but the bowl has the additional marinated egg. The braised pork in the bowl is also cut smaller so the fatty pieces are more spread out. The bao bei bun has like two FAT slices of braised pork, which are delicious, but sometimes you end up biting into just pork fat since it's only those two slices. The bowl has a bunch of smaller pieces, so the fat is more evenly dispersed. Also tried the pumpkin cinnabao. A bit dense in dough. Less cakey and not very sweet. Wish there was a stronger pumpkin flavor, I would've preferred there other desserts but glad I tried! Also, superb service. The staff were so kind and checked on me throughout the meal. They explained different dishes and were so patient and helped me with applying the monthly deals. **Big public parking lot since Bao Bei is located in a plaza. read more
Congratulations to Bao Bei on their beautiful new location. I have been a fan of Bao Bei for 2 years and rooted them on for The Great Foodtruck Race. Service was amazing. I was waited on right away and my food was out in less than five minutes. The people who waited on me were so nice and helpful. The inside of the restaurant is bright and colorful. There are plenty of seats. There are loads of adorable stuffed animals used in the fun decor and cool murals on the wall. The food was even better than I remembered. The pork belly boa was unctuous and packed with meat. What ever is in the topping was just tasty and flavorful. The Bao was pillowy and soft. I also ordered a mango lassy. It was very smooth, cool, and refreshing. I am only sorry that I didn't order more. But, no worries, I will be back soon to visit this fabulous new location. Thanks Bao Bei! read more
At the time we arrived in the middle of the day on a weekend, this place was packed. There are two ways to enter/exit. All tables taken, folks waiting for their tickets to be called, and a line to put in new orders. The menu choices appear on a digital screen on the wall above and there are also menus to grab, by the cashier. I have only tried some of their items some years back through a Yelp experience, and back then I had their Bao Bei Boa, and it was then I became a fan. However, this was the first time since then of actually coming back to business and what a fitting way - in their brick & mortar. Lots of parking is available, I see. On my visit to their 1st brick & mortar, I decided to get their Bao Bei Bowl. I also went to order the Sesame & Scallion Bread to try it, but they either said they were out or that it wasn't available. I settled on the Mango Sago (a pre-made drink). Receipt in hand with order number on the top, once my order was ready, my number was called. They ended up giving me egg in my dish even though it doesn't come with it (it's extra $ per their menu) and I got an extra drink, which I had decided to pay for as I had already finished the first Mango Sago while waiting for my dish to be made. Not too long after, the crowds were gone - it must have been a lunch rush. It was around the same time our orders were ready as we were able to get a table Food was amazing. Somehow, I thought my dish would be a little sweet, because that is what I tasted when I had my first Bao Bei some years ago and thought the bowl was just that, but in a bowl - I guess it isn't, but that is ok too as it was delicious. I did taste some pieces of fat and hope to have less of that on my next visit. The Mango Sago I thoroughly enjoyed so ended up with two of them. It is house made mango juice, coconut milk, pomelo, and tapioca pearls (sago). It is totally worth it. Next time I go back, I want to check out his art on the walls (I follow his IG) and read more on the stories (articles) to the right as you enter. I definitely plan to go back and not wait so long in between my visits. read more
Bao Bei recently opened, so I stopped by to try it out. Order at the counter and find a table to enjoy your food inside. Got the Bao Bei bowl, fried tofu bites, and the xl fried chicken. Food tasted okay overall, the xl fried chicken was a bit on the salty side, and the pork in the Bao Bei bowl was super soft and braised. Tofu didn't really stand out, so out of all the menu items I tried, I would probably recommend the Bao Bei bowl. read more
I like how the menu is small and simple cause it made it easy to decide what I want to order! They also have daily specials, which was nice. Out of everything I ordered, I really enjoyed the bao bei bao. The bao was light and fluffy and the pork belly was fatty and tender. The bao was overall savory and the peanuts added a nice nutty touch to it. I preferred the bao over the pork chop bowl cause it was more flavorful. The popcorn chicken was the day special and it was well fried and still tender inside. It had a very nice salty addicting flavor it! I was curious about the brown sugar swirly buns but the bun itself was very plain. The flavor comes from the condensed milk sense. Overall, I would definitely come back for the baos and possibly try out the other dishes. read more
I visited Bao Bei in their opening week and was so impressed with the menu! Plenty of vegan options at a really reasonable price point. I brought my husband and sister with me. Our bill was about $60 and we all left so full! We each had a Tofu Bao and we shared the wood ear mushrooms, fried tofu bites, and golden veggies. All of these items are vegan without any modifications! We all were surprised how filling the Tofu Bao was since it looked a little small. Definitely worth the price for a quick bite or a full meal if you order a side to go with it. The Bao was so flavorful and we all would order it again. The fried tofu bites were so light! For something with "fried" in the name I expected a heavy bread coating. These were so easy to pop in my mouth and had a nice crunchy exterior. The golden veggies were similarly fried to the tofu, and also a light and savory side. The wood ear mushroom salad was heavy on the garlic. It would not be something I order again, but I imagine a garlic fiend would enjoy it a lot. The seasonal sip was very refreshing! I was disappointed this business has no water station. I brought a water bottle to refill with water. They were unable to provide any tap water and you had to purchase a beverage if you wanted something to drink. I am hoping that is just something during the opening week, and they can, if they have not already, provide complimentary water in the future. read more

AN ABSOLUTE HIT AND LOCAL GEM!!! It's been a year since my first review of Bao Bei (in its first iteration running out of a ghost kitchen). Since then, this lovely and amazing brain child of local son/owner/founder Kevin Hsieh not only gained national recognition by finishing second in the 17th season of the TV hit "The Great Food Truck Race" but - happily for the DMV - launched Bao Bei as a brick-and-mortar foodie destination (in the Montrose Crossing shopping center). The Castle is welcoming - replete with Pokémon and the iconic graphics that adorned the brown paper bags when they were still a ghost kitchen. Without fail, staff immediately greet you the moment you step in the door. The food is delicious, consistently. No chance of any disappointment here - the menu of delicious Taiwanese street food choices expanded with the move, and seasonal offerings allow for even more reasons to stop by frequently! This month: a tasty beef bao (a Cow Bao!) and pumpkin cinnabaos are on the menu alongside the steady and mouth-watering favorite tofu and braised pork belly baos. Rice bowls and sides round out the experience. (I'm just waiting and hoping cold and hot fresh-made soy milk will make a debut! ) read more

Happy to see this place go from ghost kitchen to full-fledged eatery. The dining area is small but has decent seating capacity. Modern street style art as well as stuffed animals decorate the walls. The star is the menu, which has Taiwanese style street foods. Speciality is the Gua bao with some bento boxes and snack appetizers. The main vegetarian option is the braised tofu bao or bento, which is the usual go-to. This time we tried the bao bei bao. It was braised pork belly with fat on, steeped in the same great soy, five spice and anise stew. It was topped with crushed peanuts, pickled green veggies and cilantro. The bao was a steamed bun which was fluffy and light, with a little sweetness. This was comfort food at its best. Pork was tender and sweet. Flavors were legit. read more

Bao Bei should have won the Great Food Truck race!!! Anyways, New Bao castle opened up also you can grab a seat and eat fresh Bao's. I came for the soft opening and was excited. Just like my 8 and 11 year old girls get when they hear the first 10 seconds of K-pop Demon hunters on the TV. My buddy and I had the big chicken, baos, the sweet baos, wood ear mushroom and cucumber salad and washed it all down with a mango sago drink. It didn't seem like a soft opening because there were steady patrons, the food was hella on point and the service was excellent. The menu is limited and if you aren't a pork eater, you may be underwhelmed by the alternatives. I got the Bao Bei Bao which was exactly what I thought it would be. The flavors of the pork belly,pickled veggies, peanuts, etc. complemented each other well. The pork belly could have been more tender though. Over all it was average, I have had better bao. Service was fine, nothing extra. The wait for our food wasn't long at all. We went during a week day for lunch, and we got our food to go. Although the restaurant was clean and spacious, I most likely wouldn't eat there. I wouldn't go again, just because I am not huge on pork and they don't have many options.But it was worth trying. read more

Since Grand Opening-- Visited many times I refuse to confess how many times, I've visited since their grand opening. I must admit I'm stuck on a few choice dishes -- the Big Chicken and their Almond "Tofu" are both my favorites. The tofu isn't really tofu, it's actually a smooth pudding. It comes in a large container, so you can either share or have dessert for a few days. The Big Chicken is a flatten chicken breast, and you can enjoy it spice or regular. I'm kinda stuck on these 2 items. The service is warm and friendly, the decor is playful and incorporated great anime touches throughout the restaurant. There's seats for about 20 and they are usually packed at nighttime. You'll love it, you definitely should check them out. read more
The inside is bright and vibrant. The whole side is full of windows. There's a respectable amount of seating. When we came here, it was busy, so we had the two seats off to the side. The other seat that was opened had trash on the floor and needed a wipe down. They have all gender bathrooms. You directly walk into the line for ordering. They have the regular dishes that they served at the ghost kitchen location and some extras - or it's been a while so I didn't know they had more options. I think it's been 3 years since I had Bao Bei. The Bao is incredibly soft and fluffy. The pork is soft and nicely seasoned. The one thing that took it away from me is the overpowering flavor of the pao cai (fermented vegetables). A little less would have helped. The Bao Bei bowl had the same flavor profile as well as the same issue with the pao cai. The crispy chicken was fun to eat. I can only think of one place near here that I had this dish before and it's been a while. I do like how they offer spicy powder on the side. I ended up dumping the whole thing on the chicken and then eating it. After the meal, we thought it was okay. The food was good, but it didn't wow us made it a memorable meal. read more

I visited this new restaurant early Friday evening for carryout dinner. I beat the dinner rush by 10 minutes! You order at the counter, pay, then wait for your order number to be called to get your meal. It took 15 minutes to wait. The menu has only a few items listed to keep it short and simple. I tried the Bao Bei bowl for $12.88 which has rice, minced pork belly, whole boiled egg, mustard greens, and cilantro. It was large that it could be 2 meals for me. The dish was very flavorful and rich, but had more fat than expected from the pork belly. The dining room has around 10 tables, fitting 2-4 people each, with one wall decorated with Pokemon plushies. Most tables were occupied so it's best to get carryout. Overall, a nice casual place to visit. Hope they expand the menu in the future with more variety. read more
I was waiting for Baobei to open! I went on the last day of their ghost kitchen and I had it once before at a food festival. Their Bao Bei Bao, also a Taiwanese Gua Bao, really reminds me of the ones in Taiwanese street markets. Its sooo juicy, and the bao is very fluffy. I tried the mango sago and that was very refreshing too! I am definitely going to make a stop whenever I come back to Rockville. I've had this food before when they were in Ghost Kitchen, and I was looking forward to having it again in this new location. The location is convenient with ample parking. As you walk in it's brightly colored with welcoming ambience and I was greeted by staff behind the counter. I ordered my favorite which is the Bao Bei bowl and the Cucumber and Wood Ear salad. I didn't have to wait too long for my order to come out. I can see I will be a regular here. read more

Came here during a slightly busy Monday afternoon, I am happy that Bao Bei now has a Brick and Mortar location and is able to live out the dream of owning a store! Unfortunately at the time of my visit they ran out of rice bowls so I ended up ordering their Bao Bei Bun, Bao Zi Bun, and the gigantic XL Chicken. The Bao Bei is a classic. Braised Pork Belly in a Bun is just delicious and savory. You won't be disappointed getting one or two, it is filling enough to eat for a lunch! I liked the Bao Zi which has Pork and Shrimp and other stuffing inside it. It was good but the Bao Bei was something I kept coming back too. The XL Taiwanese Fried Chicken is just great. You can get it spicy and in my opinion; it has a slight kick to it but your tastebuds might vary. I really enjoyed it and it reminded me of the famichiki I had in Japan. Overall, the place was lively, there were not too many seats but once we had an open spot it was fine. Food gets called out by number as you wait, and there's all sorts of cute pokemon plushies/anime figurines. It's fun to see that the store has personality going to it.
