I had never visited this establishment despite driving past it many times. With an ownership change and revamped menu, I'm excited to have found a great authentic Chinese spot in Sugar Land! We used to frequent the nearby Jade Garden for their lunch specials, but the slow service and inconsistent and smaller portions had left us desiring more. Thank goodness this is a great alternative! I visited here for lunch on a weekday to take advantage of their $10 lunch specials after receiving a tip that the food here was actually good! Despite being completely vacant when we arrived, my mom and I ordered a number of dishes both on and off the lunch menu. The waitress/owner offered me some complimentary sweetened lemon iced tea to try, and boy was it tasty without being overly sweet! We ordered four dishes-- all of which was pretty good. The beef flat noodles were my favorite, when some amazing wok hei flavor going on. My mother enjoyed the beef with bitter melon. The beef in both dishes were so nice and tender, obviously velvet prepared to give it that nice soft texture. The salt toasted pork ribs were very tasty and succulent, but I wasn't expecting it to be battered. You can also order a version of it with a slightly sweet sauce which was also nice. The seafood clay pot, which is on the regular menu, contained plenty of fish, squid, and shrimp, plus firm tofu. Could have used a tad more salt, but it was still well prepared. The food is served family style and is so good! I really like the walnut shrimp, black bean clam and soft egg tofu (basically everything we got). Me and my family go often and they are really good with feedback as well. This place use to sell mostly Chinese style buns, but was taken over or decided to change what they offer. They now sell authentic Chinese family style dishes. I don't think they sell buns at all. My kids approve of this place a lot. Their favorite dish is the Salt & Pepper Fish, which is a dry dish of fried fish with salt and pepper (white pepper and I think jalapeños). We always order some kind of dark green leafy vegetables, which is usually Snow Peas Leaves or Water Spinach. You know it is done right when it is stir fried in a very hot wok. First, I want to start off by saying the food at Bun's House is excellent. My family and I are frequent customers here. On our most recent, we ordered the shrimp rolls, sweet and sour pork ribs, sizzling egg tofu, and a seafood tofu pot. The food, as always, was excellent. Unfortunately, we came on a Friday night and it was obvious that they were pretty seriously short-staffed. While I empathize with it being a family-owned business, the entire restaurant was packed and the two people working the front (a waitress and the owners' son) were clearly overburdened by the amount of tables, takeout orders, etc. all happening simultaneously. It took a very long time for us to get someone to take our order as both people working were preoccupied with trying to turn tables and seat people waiting and helping customers pay their tab. This wait also applied to waiting for our food, which took more than 30 minutes for the first dish to arrive, and an additional 20 minutes for the last dish to arrive. The owners are very nice and are clearly doing their best, but this, unfortunately, has a negative impact on the customer experience. The restaurant itself is a nice, simple, family-owned place. It's well-maintained and very clean. However, the HVAC has maintenance issues. The restaurant was uncomfortably warm on our most recent visit, despite the AC being on full-blast. My husband was overheated to the point where he was dripping with sweat by the end of our meal. It was actually cooler outside than inside by the time we finished eating, and it was still a good 82 degrees outside when we left. Suffice it to stay, I still love Bun's House and will still be going back, but I really hope that they can improve their customer experience. Ordered 3 dishes and what do you know the table of six got Their food before us ......wonder why ? The meal tasted fine, but it was too heavy handed with the MSG for my liking. Table service was slow with only one person working in the front of the house. I've been here a few times with my family and like the location because it's close to where I live. It is one of the better Chinese places in the Sugar Land area. We ordered the flat rice noodle with beef and satay sauce and the beef flat rice noodle. We also ordered the general Tso's chicken and a seafood congee with the Chinese fried donuts. The portion sizes could be better though. We saw another table's general tso's which was substantially more than the one they served us. There are also vegetarian options. We ordered a dish with fried egg and butter melon which was a pleasant surprise for me. All in all, it's a good choice for a family meal. Our main qualm is the service. When it came down to the bill, obviously multiple people in our family were fighting for the bill (in true Chinese style). My grandpa tried to pay for it and my aunt told the waitress not to take his payment, which the waitress gave us her verbal agreement and promise. Despite this, she still took his payment the whole time we were telling her not to and disagreeing with her actions. She just smirked and kept continuing what she was doing. We wanted to treat our grandpa for a nice meal since he had just gotten out of the hospital after multiple recent admissions, so it is obvious why we would be frustrated with the whole encounter. We didn't agree with him paying for everyone. This really pissed off my aunt, which was notable to the waitress. She still kept smirking at us and didn't seem to care. The coating had sweated off and with that went the flavor, I have been here before but this will be our last visit. Honestly, the filling kind of smelled like canned cat food, which was a turn off, in addition to it being super dense and chewy. The bun dough itself was fine. I would have rather ordered the vegetable buns, but they were sold out of those. I also tried the pork and chive dumplings, and those had a pretty good filling. Ive been here twice now when my soup dumpling craving gets the best of me. It's actually quite fatt from home but I can count on the freshness no matter when I drop in. It's a very quiet hole in the wall establishment that hasn't been terribly busy these past two times ive gone. That's possibly because it's right next to two other popular restaurants. Definitely a 0 frills place, serve your own rice, water, and tea. If they were open later I'd definitely cure a hangover here. Don't skip out! The portions are generous and the foods really good. So far the soup dumplings are my favorite anywhere, which is why I drive half an hour for them. I'm black and not in any way Chinese, so I cannot comment on authenticity, but I find the foods flavorful in new ways I haven't experienced, and isn't that what trying new foods is about? Ok I noticed that I had reviewed this place before. It was over a year ago. Yesterday a friend had sent me some photos of his visit here and it inspired me to come back. From what I understand it's new ownership and the food is quite different. I did notice that. What I found really outstanding were the Pork Bun scallion choice which gives you 6 generous delectable pork buns for only $6! Needless to say that was my favorite from all that we ordered. I also ordered the Beef Noodle Soup traditional and found it pretty good but not the best I've had. We also ordered the 16 piece order dumpling. Pork with chive and requested them fried and they were outstanding as well! All in all I'd say the experience was very good! I know whenever we get a craving for soup and dumplings we always make the trip to Chinatown but now I may have second thoughts. Especially if I'm just craving dumplings and pork buns. The food really reminds me of my parent's cooking and I think that was the best part of eating here. The people were very friendly and the food came out quickly, fresh hot a delicious! Here's why: I really think it's counter service since menus were at counter and someone else ordered at counter, but our order was taken at our table when we sat to look at menu as our first time there. The staff, especially a lady at the counter was very patient and kind telling us to take our time. They have no sriracha sauce when my husband inquired of it, so the lady at the counter asked someone else to buy it at the store and they gave my husband a fresh new bottle out the bag! Not to mention, the menu is in English and there is someone at the front counter who is fluent in English (MAJOR MAJOR PLUS - at Old Place, I can never get anyone who works there to describe something on the menu to me in English). Food: Generous Portions. I ordered the Pan Fried Dumplings (10 pieces), Soup dumplings (12 pieces), and Pan Fried Buns (7 pieces). They were all fresh and flavorful! The meat within the dumplings and the buns were mouth-licking juicy! The broth for the soup dumplings was tasty (a little bit on the saltier side but I certainly drank most of the broth). There is a self serve station if where you can get tea or water (free). You can also make your own sauce to your liking (soy sauce, black vinegar, garlic, chili pepper, etc). They sell other side dishes and drinks as well (limited variety of drinks). Price: Most of their orders are ~$5ish - $6ish. You get alot for what you pay.
