I have to go with two stars. Food was fine. Way too expensive. We had a bean burger and a spicy chicken. The chicken sandwich is $7.95; dipping it in hot sauce is an extra 30 cents. 8.25 and the chicken breast is about half the size of a grocery story half chicken breast. Yeah, a quarter chicken breast for 8.25. The bean burger patty was pretty thin as well. Tots were fresh from the fryer, hot and crispy. $2.75? No, not for someone to grab a bag from the freezer. Had a beer, which was fine (just remove the cap, right.). Again $2.75 for a Coke? Nope. McDonald's figured out for everyone that a dollar is plenty, no one should be charging any more than a buck-seventy-five. Finally, I'd like to start a movement: if you're letting your staff panhandle for tips (STARTING at 15% and shoving in your face on one of those iPad-based payment systems BEFORE I EVEN GET TO SEE MY FOOD) when you don't offer table service and your prices are premium for EVERYTHING. Sorry I'm starting at 10% and rounding down to the nearest dollar. NO ONE should be asked for a tip when all they've done is order. Some of the empty tables were dirty and the place wasn't busy. I mean if they were really trying hard and charging these prices and shilling for tips-with-no-service, maybe, but nah, everything was just pretty good. Burg and Barrel is priced similarly and has table service but food is superior. Shake Shack has excellent food and is about the same price as well. read more

The burgers and dogs are excellent. The tots are literally some of the best I've ever had anywhere - legit, and consistently that way. They come out extra hot, fresh and perfectly golden and crispy. I'm obsessed. They also have gluten free burger buns. All food is made to order. It's roughly the same price as most fast food, yet way better. Nice little hole in the wall. Living in Waldo is nice because we all look out for each other. This week's caring thought was all of my community telling the rest of us to try out Burger State. They weren't lying when they said it was a must. There is no table service here, you order at the counter and pick up at the counter. The cashier we had was so sweet and friendly, it was a nice thirty-second interaction. The prices are pretty decent for your food too - about $10 for a double and fries - although everything is a la carte so you have to pay separately for fries and drinks. The burgers are reminiscent of the burgers I had as a kid in my old neighborhood. The patties are smashed, but not too thin, and seasoned to mouth-watering perfection. The buns would even be delicious on their own. The sweet potato fries I ordered were good, honestly not my favorite, but still some of the better sweet potato fries I've had in a restaurant. The spicy chicken sandwich is great, too, but beware: you'll be covered in hot sauce as you eat it. Ask for extra napkins. The chicken was so nicely fried, and as I mentioned, it's drenched in hot sauce. Buffalo sauce isn't my favorite flavor, but I wanted spice so I got over it and got my craving satisfied for sure. The regular fries we got with this were thick and crispy and seasoned amazingly. This is ONE OF THE BEST BURGERS I've had in a long time!!!! The meat was perfectly seasoned and cooked, and the bread was amazing! I'll be honest, I'm not really a burger person because they are so greasy, but this one was great. I also got the tots. I'm really picky about tots, but whatever seasoning they put on theirs made them out of this world. I highly recommend trying this place! .....and it's affordable!!! I took 15 students there for lunch after an off sight rehearsal. The next day many of them cane into class saying they were ready to go back. They lived it. We stopped here for dinner on a Friday night and hubby said he will definitely return for their lunch special offered during the week. I tried the spicy chicken sandwich and was disappointed. It mentions being coated in a spicy sauce; however, it really tasted like straight Louisanna hot sauce covering the chicken. If I had known that's what it was, I would have ordered differently. You couldn't even taste the pepper jack cheese due to the amount of Louisiana hot sauce coating the chicken. It really just tasted like buffalo chicken to me and lacked any creativity and flavors for a spicy sandwich. Hubby ordered the burger and ended up with a double due to the thinness of the burgers. He thought it was good and would certainly order it again. We tried the tator tots and liked that they were crispy, but we would probably try a different side the next time. I went to this restaurant for the very first time on Saturday. My daughter and son in laws family had eaten there before. They had a great experience previously. We arrived and we were greeted quickly. The menu had good options, but not too many. I ordered a double cheeseburger, bacon and grilled onions. Wow!! Amazing. I also ordered fries and a drink. The fries were so good, hot and well seasoned. Everyone in our group was extremely pleased with their choices. Highly recommend. Food was amazing and the prices were fair. Chicken sandwich was really good, smaller than most places but was perfect for me (I'm not a big eater) I ordered the fries extra crispy and they were so good and fresh. The fried burger and onion rings may have been the most succulent, enjoyable meal I've had in months.

Patty Melts are not in my 'Top 3' choices when it comes to burgers. But after seeing the pictures on their Facebook page, we decided to try them. A great balance of all the ingredients. No one flavor stronger than another (which is why I'm not usually a fan of a 'melt'). My wife's new favorite place for them, and I'll definitely enjoy one here again! Tried Burger State for the first time and was very impressed. I had the KC Fried Burger, a beer battered hamburger with lettuce, onions and cheddar cheese. It was so good. We were having a hard time finding places to eat - it always surprises me how many places are closed on Sunday evenings in KC. We found this place and gotta say I wasn't too disappointed. My friend got a chicken sandwich which was rather big and I got the fried burger which was surprisingly interesting. We also had the sweet potato fries and the regular fries - those were out of this world. I think that the biggest disappointment for the both of us was that the batter does not appear to have much flavor - it looks good and the crunch was really interesting on my burger but I really like more flavor in that fried batter when I cheat and eat it. I've been meaning to try Burger State after having heard so many great things about it since it opened. It did not disappoint. We stopped by for lunch on a weekday and it was fairly empty so we were able to quickly order with the friendly staff. The food was ready in about 5 minutes from ordering. The burger was very juicy and delivered very hot. Definitely on my list of top burgers in KC only behind Tay's Burger Shack up north. Burger State did an amazing job! Burgers here are pretty fantastic. The topping selections and variety aren't shouting from the rooftop worthy, but what they do here is simple and clean. It's a good way to get people focused on "back to the basics" of standards and quality product without having to dress it up with all the other nonsense that's cover up the flavorless beef patty (talking about you Five Guys!) I would definitely give it a shot. It's not in the most popular area, but it deserves a little more traffic considering it's one of the better, and only burgee spots in the location it's in (between Waldo and 103rd).
