Burger Theory is a nice Arcadia-style place in East/Central Phoenix. It is located in the Holiday Inn at 44th St. and E. McDowell, but there is a separate entrance so you don't have to walk thru the hotel. The dining/room bar area is modern and upbeat, and the patio is surprisingly easy to have a conversation on, considering the proximity to McDowell Rd. It was nearing sunset when we visited, and the staff kindly lowered the sunshades on the patio for us. Burger Theory has a great tap list that focuses on AZ beers, plus a generous daily happy hour 4p-7p with drink and appetizer specials. Tyler was our server and she was awesome! All of the staff was very friendly and gave this place a nice vibe. The Farm Fresh burger came loaded with portobello mushrooms and roasted peppers, all dripping with cheese. It was delicious! They offer a lettuce wrap (by request) if you prefer to swap out the bun. There were a number of other burgers, salads, and mason jar desserts that I wanted to try. We ended up enjoying burgers and several drinks for two for under $40.00. I'll definietly be visiting Burger Thoery again soon! read more

I highly recommend this place! I tried it for Restaurant Week and was not disappointed. They had a great selection of local beer. Their wings were a 4.5 out of 5 on my scale, and I'm very picky about wings. The sauce was a perfect mix of heat with a little sweet. The Lone Star burger was perfectly cooked and delicious. And I loved their mason jar brownie sundae. My only wish was for a more engaged waiter. He came to the table, but never really asked if we needed anything or how our food was. Me and my BFF went there for lunch, a couple of week ago. I order a Asian Chicken salad, ummm it looked so good, started to eat on it, low and behold there was a lady bugs crawling around in my salad, I was so disgusted, after trying to get the waiter attention I thought I just take it up to them, upon returning back to the table my BFF discovered bugs on her Turkey burger ;( I took the burger back showed them the bugs, our waiter apologized. we waited a little while to see if a manager would come to us to apologized or anything needless to say, No manager showed up so we left there very disappointed and we will never be back. Arrived at Burger Theory at 9:25pm. They close at 10:00pm. Upon entering they said seat yourselves. Party of 4. Several tables were dirty, but we found a clean one. Could not get the bartender's attention although the bar was only 2/3 full and no one was actively ordering. Nor was she making drinks. 5 minutes later a waiter, Luis, approached the table, so i returned to the table. He asked if we were picking up a to go order and we let him know we came in for dinner and beers. He said that because it was so close to closing time they could only offer to go service. We ordered to go and he brought us 2 rounds while we waited. I again attempted to get another from the bartender who wasn't busy and she said I would have to wait a couple of minutes. Back to the table. 5 minutes later the food arrived before 10:00pm and she let our server know that we ordered another round. We politely let them know that ship had sailed and that we would pay and leave with the order. When we left there were at least 20 people still in the restaurant and bar eating and drinking. These employees cost the restaurant at least $15 in profit and the server another $15 in lost tip. Bill was $92, tip was a generous $10. It appears that the restaurant is poorly managed as the the employees lack any desire to provide customer service and, by the way, the men's room was in disrepair and was due for its' once a month cleaning. I got two salads here after arriving at the holiday inn late after traveling all day. I called from my room and they told me that it would take 20 minutes. Well I walked over to the hotel room after 17 minutes had passed and my food was not ready for another 15. In fact, I'm not even sure my order was taken. Even though it was dinner time, there wasn't anyone inside so I do not know why the service was so poor. The food, however, was great. read more

Food was just Okay. Pretty pricey for what you get. We stopped on the way to Kenny Chesney (5 stars for Kenny) to grab a quick bite. Only 4 other people in the place, and service was slow. Not terrible, but too laid back. We ordered a couple of "starters". Wings: we got 7 wings and even with the happy hour price it came to more than a dollar per wing. They were good, not great. We also ordered the flatbread tuscan chicken. It had very little flavor and was over in just a couple of bites. Beers were fairly priced, but other reviews note the emphasis on local brews, and other than the standards you see everywhere else, I didn't see anything special. Okay, I'm a vegetarian, but I do go out to eat with carnivores. I asked about the veggie burger, and learned it is a frozen Morningstar burger. Really? I can go to the grocery store for that. They tout their innovative, fresh flavors, and serve a commercially produced, tasteless veggie burger. Boring and disappointing, but the only choice on the menu. My dinner mate had a burger, which he described as the greasiest burger he had had in years. His burger was huge, but for us it's quality over quantity. I finally decided it was time to try this place near my office. Mind you I try not to eat burgers often but once every 2 or 3 months the cravings start. It was an early lunch. Staff was attentive, food came quick enough. BUT I GOT FOOD POISONING! Around 7 pm I got the warnings and after that I thought I was going to have to go to emergency room it was that bad. Came here at 6:00 PM on January 24, 2018. The food is good, but their service could improve. 1) I ordered a chicken breast burger with Swiss, bacon, lettuce and tomato with onion rings. The sandwich and rings were very good. 2) I sat at the bar and ordered food and beer, but the male bartender needs to do a better job to be aware of customers with empty glasses: patrons wait for greater than 10 minutes on a slow Wednesday night to be asked if they would like another drink. 3) a customer sitting next to me at the bar had to wait 42 minutes for her chicken sandwich and rings. That's a bit excessive when my order arrived within 10 minutes of ordering. 4) the same customer sitting next to me waited 13 minutes with her empty glass for the male bar tender to be available to ask for another drink...on a slow Wednesday night. The male bar tender does not know how to work with a sense of urgency and multi-task. 5) the female manager on duty did a good job looking around seeing if anyone needed anything, except for the nice female customer sitting next to me at the bar on a slow Wednesday night. Bottom line, good food and drinks, but customer service can improve with training and care. After all, customer service is a choice to be delivered by anyone, but need guidance and development to 'delight' the customer. read more

We were looking forward to a good burger while watching sports at the Burger Theory on 44th St & McDowell Rd. Here was our experience: * No hostess was near the stand so the bartender yelled for someone to help us even though it was not hectic. * Many of the patio tables were filthy including the one we received. Yet the person who directed us to this table never cleaned it; they left it for the server to clean. Never saw a bus-person working while we were there. * Short staffed on a sports evening resulted in slow service yet our waitress was running as fast as she could on her own. * The waitress took the order correctly yet the kitchen over cooked all our burgers (medium rare order resulted in a well-done burgers) and the fries were very greasy. * Our waitress apologized stating this had been happening all night. Felt bad for her, because this probably lowered her tips even though it was not her fault. After speaking with her manager, our server said we'd get a discount which ended up being a Veteran's discount along with the server's apology which was nice; the cooking temp. of our food was not the servers fault but the Manager should have came to our table to touch base with us. If a burger restaurant can't cook the temperature of their burgers correctly then we will not recommend this restaurant to anyone even if they are staying at the attached Holiday Inn, which is a shame since there's plenty of seating and tv's to watch a game at this location. read more

First time here, and our server kicked ass. Can't remember her name, tall with black hair and bangs? On a Saturday morning when the place was almost full she was the only employee in site and she was beyond hustling. She got us seated, greeted, and had drinks in front of us in under five minutes despite clearly having about 10-15 other tables. We had the fried jumbo shrimp as an app and it was amazing! Don't bother. Wait staff was friendly but food was not good. Had the Theory Burger which had way too much injected sauce, instead of some fresh cheese as expected. I was hungry and squeezed it out to make it less decadent. My friend had a flatbread for lower calorie purposes, which was listed at 600 calories on the menu but based on it having about 1/2 inches of cheese and heavily laden in oil was likely more than 2,000 calories. read more

So my husband treated me to burger theory for my birthday yesterday because it's close to our house and we hadn't tried it yet. I wasn't impressed. The French fries were awesome but my chicken sandwich was burned and it ruined my sandwich. My husband ordered a triple hamburger with several toppings and when our food came he received a hamburger with one Patty on it which surprised us because even our waitress had made a comment about the three hamburger patties being so huge on the hamburger. We told the waitress That his order wasn't correct so they redid his hamburger and it was fine after that. The waitresses were all very nice and it's a nice restaurant but I don't think it's worth the price for Mediocre food. read more

So I am here now with my significant other. We came in to the restaurant around 6:30AM, and the waitress, (I believe her name was Karrie) completely ignored us. We tried three times to ask her where we should sit, and each time she proceeded to very blatantly ignore us! Finally, the waiter (Michael) must have noticed what was happening and kindly helped us find a seat immediately. Now at first, I just thought Karrie was just rude, and poorly qualified for the job, but after sitting for a few minutes I began to notice something. Each time an older white male entered the restaurant, Karrie greeted them with a warm (and very loud) welcome! She would say things like, "Good morning! Have a seat where ever you'd like!" Or "Good morning! How are you?!". After observing a bit longer, I noticed she only provided service (I.E. topping off drinks and bring tabs etc) to the same "genre" of customers (white males), and all of the minority customers were all serviced by Michael. Now, I don't know if it was the waitress' personal issue against people of color, OR if that is what management has instructed her to do, but either way, I will not support a business that allows blatant discrimination in any way shape or form. On a side note, if I were basing my review solely on the service we received from Michael, then 5 stars hands down! If my review were solely based on the service that we observed from Karrie, I would give this place negative stars if I could. If you are a person of color, please be aware of the blatant discrimination by the waitress or possibly management, and be sure to leave Micheal a good tip because he's excellent! read more
