First time visiting and unfortunately it will probably be my last. We ordered two burgers and fries and spent over $30. One burger needed no onions due to an allergy, and the other had a dairy allergy. During ordering, we specifically discussed that the grilled onions are cooked in butter, so we requested no grilled onions. We also had to point out that the receipt showed cheese on the dairy-allergy burger and were assured it would be made correctly. After confirming everything multiple times at both the register and pickup window, we got home and found grilled onions on the dairy-allergy burger and raw onions on the other burger. Both burgers were made incorrectly despite the allergy concerns being clearly communicated. The food was okay, but when you're charging over $30 for two burgers and fries, the expectation would be that the order is accurate--especially when allergies are involved. Going by the reviews I read on Yelp, I was really looking forward to a cheeseburger on a gluten-free bun with fries. I see now why people were saying the gluten-free bun holds together well. It's flavorless and dry. There wasn't enough sauce or juicy tomato or pickle, to make the bun palatable. The beef patties were overly salty. Really 4 1/2 stars. An excellent, classic, burger-stand burger. The menu here is very basic: it's just burgers and fries and shakes, but what they do, they do really well. You've probably noticed from my past reviews that I'm a burger aficionado. And once you get to this level of burger (you'll notice I gave it almost 5 stars), the differences are subtle. What set The Stand out for me was, first, the bun. It's soft and fresh and buttered and you can taste the butter. It's gently grilled and slathered with their secret burger sauce, which is a slightly mustardy version of an excellent thousand island. A hint of pickle relish, then the broad flavors of ketchup and mayo, sprinkled with some spices. The result is tasty and gives the burger an unctuous bite. The standard veggies come on it, including green-leaf (thanks for not using cheapie iceberg), and a beefy tomato. That's complimented with some nice white onion and some thick pickles. I opted for no pickles. The standard burger comes with two thin-but-generous patties. So it kinda has a "smash burger" vibe but not quite that flat or thin. They're grilled beautifully and are juicy and meaty and tasty. A real win. So, overall this is one of my favorite burgers in Phoenix. It's one of 8 top-notch, world-class burgers. It's a classic stand burger in that it's not some fancy, high-falutin' burger with New Zealnd goat cheese, exotic peppers from Tahiti, and micro-greens from Thailand. No, this is the classic, hearty, all-American burger. It's a hearty, drippy, meaty, perfect burger. Not a lot to improve on, though you could add 300 things to it if you wanted to get fancy. But order it as it comes and-if you love hamburgers like I do- you'll love this. I'm adding this to my "Phoenix Best of" list. The fries are not the usual fare. The burger is extremely well seasoned - it's so flavorful and juicy that you don't even need to add ketchup or any additional sauce (beyond what they provided). The ingredients also tasted very fresh. The special sauce that they have for the fries is excellent - it had a very solid spice without being overwhelming. The shake, however, is the real star. We got the salted dulce de leche and it was truly incredible: you get the incredible caramel goodness mixed perfectly with the texture so as not to be overwhelming. This was my celebration victory meal after completing the half marathon in Tempe, and boy, did I feel great after tackling this delicious burger. Fries were super seasoned, cripsy, and hot. So hot that the roof of your mouth will be begging you to stop shoveling these fries down. A friend and I have been ping-ponging around to different burger joints to find the best burger in the Valley. Both of us were really looking forward to trying The Stand as it came highly recommended from several friends. Sadly, it was just kind of a 'meh' experience for us. The bun and the toppings were great, as was the Stand sauce, which is like a fry sauce with some paprika and one or two herbs (I think dill and maybe thyme?) mixed in. It was great on the burger and to dip the fries in. The beef itself was way too salty. What you could taste of the beef under all that salt seemed good, but the salt really overpowered it. Not sure if there was an 'oops' in the kitchen or if that heavy saltiness is standard for them. Either way, it was $40 for two burgers we weren't jazzed on, two orders of fries, and two drinks. We've found better for less at various spots around Phoenix and the East Valley. Oh, we went on a Sunday around 11:45am and there was no line. Service was good. read more
