They currently have a link to their gofundme up on their instagram (@biggrandmaskitchen), because sadly the owner's cooking equipment and tools burnt down during the Eaton Fire. Despite having had tragedy strike them recently, this local small business is still selflessly giving back to the communities of Altadena and Pasadena by regularly donating food to residents and first responders at community food drives, so I strongly urge everybody to consider donating, or at least buy a pupusa or two - you will NOT regret it! It's such an intimate and beautiful space with great music for ambiance. Our server Angel was so sweet. Everyone was very attentive and it felt like a family. The chicken thighs are the juiciest and most tender I've ever had. I should've ordered more. The grilled short ribs were my next favorite, they have a nice mesquite taste. There is only one Puerto Rican restaurant in LA and a take out operation all in the San Fernando Valley. For the main course, we ordered: Saltado Salad - This had minimal protein and was not so satisfying when compared to a traditional lomo saltado, but the protein that was there was yummy. Aji Gallina - I really was excited to see this on their menu since I love this dish so much and don't see it offered too often at Peruvian restaurants. Though the sauce was good, the chicken was VERY dry and hard to chew (overcooked) so it took a while to finish this. In lieu of desserts, they offered Maracuya (passion fruit) and Chicha Morada (purple corn) juices which were yummy but the star of the show was their sangria which was delicious especially on a hot day. My only complaint about the sangria was that we were charged for 3 carafes when we only got 2. As I waited to order, I considered the options before deciding to go all-out with the 3 mandu (Korean dumplings) combo which came up to around $20. I got the spicy pork and kimchi, coconut curry chicken, and beef bulgolgi mandu. The dumplings come in a bowl with a bed of house salad mixed with sesame dressing. The dumplings are huge in size and the skin is a bit thick. However, the meat stuffing inside is juicy and flavorful. The dumplings are noticeably greasy, but the salad helps with that. Overall, the dumplings make for a great photo and that's probably the biggest reason to get it. The flavors were good, but not good enough to warrant the expensive price. I probably wouldn't order them again, but it was try.
