Busboys and Poets is a restaurant, bookstore, and cultural hub billed as "Conscious. Intentional. Uplifting." I would add delicious to the list. The food was wonderful and the service impeccable. We started with the Brussels sprouts in a chili peanut sauce. I order Brussels sprouts whenever I can and these are among the best I've tried. My companion raved about her sweet potato hash. I tied something new to me, the Mekhleme. The Iraqi dish has a base of seasoned ground beef and potatoes. I would definitely order it again The menu boasts of many gluten-free and halal dishes.

I stopped by for dessert with a friend and had a great time! We spent a while looking at the little bookstore in the front. They have a great selection with local authors and authors with different backgrounds. We sat at the front which had comfy couches and a laid back vibe. The server was very nice and patient and recommended the pecan pie, which was a great choice! It was so pretty and was balanced- not too sweet. It's a great place to stop by if you need to kill some time.

The food here was good, but what was even better was the service and the ambiance. The interior was creatively decorated with a myriad of books and artwork on the shelves, walls, and in every corner of the store! Absolutely loved it. This is a great place to eat if you are in the nation's capital!

Love the name of this place and the vibe of the restaurant/book store is super fun. The food was also really good! I really enjoyed the quinoa kale salad - very fresh and flavorful! The rest of the group enjoyed their items too!

I love the vibe here. Everyone is so nice and the menu has a lot of variety for anyone looking to dine here. We dined here for breakfast. I had the mekhleme which is an Iraqi style breakfast skillet. It was absolutely delicious, with lots of seasoned ground beef, potatoes, tomato, various herbs and spices with a perfectly cooked egg on top. It was a hearty meal for sure. Service was friendly and attentive. I'd definitely go back here next time I'm in the area.

Came for Sunday brunch and we were seated right away with no reservation. I like Busboys because they have a good mix of vegan and vegetarian options and the menu clearly indicates which items contain meat. Our waiter and host were both friendly and attentive. This is one of those places that you have to bring family or friends visiting DC because it's truly a DC gem and everyone's dietary needs can be met! The pescatarian had the catfish and grits and absolutely loved it. The vegan had the tofu scramble and enjoyed it, but was disappointed that there wasn't a vegan grits option on the menu. We had leftovers and made grits to go along with our food the next morning. Prices are fair for the large portions you get. I usually browse the books but have never purchased anything other than food. The ambience is cool with lots of historical black figures and facts up on the wall, along with DC history. Parking is probably a nightmare based on the location but ubering was easy enough for us.

We came here for an early dinner. We are seated promptly and our server was very welcoming. We enjoyed a few jokes as we were wearing our college team shirts and our server liked the team we just defeated. He made some menu recommendations and offered the drink specials. Their old fashioned was great. The ticket times were good and the food was tasty. The atmosphere is great as they have a lot of books to peruse there. Everyone seemed to be enjoying the food and drinks. We will come back again for sure.

First visit to this location, its name is an ode to Langston Hughes, the famous Black Poet who once worked as a bus boy, ample patio seating in front of restaurant, paid street parking, entrance nestled by bookshelves, large interior with several dining sections, and a bar. Offers food, books, and culture for its creative community. Beautiful artwork for sale graces the walls. Friendly service, clean, wonderful welcoming atmosphere. Enjoyed a turkey burger and fruit. 1/2 price burgers on Monday.

Really good happy hour. Prices are very decent and under $10 for food and drinks. I had the chicken which was not that good. I've had the nachos before and always enjoy those. The drinks were good and strong. The service was nice. The space is pretty big with lots of seating.

The place is a bookstore and a restaurant which is very cool! Service is slow Mimosas are offered but no other flavors such as Bellinis I had the jumbo shrimp with crab grits. The flavor was great. I am not someone who eats grits often. I did get a bit sick after as did the rest of my party who ordered grits. Not sure why.

This location is so charming and our server, Coolie, was amazing! He was so attentive and patient while we took forever to decide what to get since the menu has so many great options! I got a lavender latte and my partner got a sweet and spicy latte. For food i had the vegan hash and my partner had the vegetable quinoa bowl. We inhaled them! We will absolutely be back!!

I always passed this place, but never felt compelled to visit until recently for a Sunday brunch. Food - for $14, I thought my meal was just alright. I did appreciate the little stuff like fruit and syrup, but I thought the pancakes themselves were just alright. My other friends got other brunch items and did not praise their respective dishes (classic omelette and chorizo). Service/vibes - I liked the concept how you can also shop for books within the space, but perhaps it's still the summer time, but flies and mosquitos flocked around us while we dined. Wish there was some air circulation that kept the flies away. The service was pretty typical for a place like this. I would probably recommend folks to try this place if they're nearby, but I would probably won't be coming back anytime soon.

10/10! The food was amazing and very fresh. The crabcakes was very good and seasoned perfectly. Ya know the ceaser salads that are tossed too much and the lettuce is too wet and just slimy? Not this salad, it was tossed well AND had the perfect amount of mini croutons. The smoked salmon was typical but good and the Prosecco they had was on point! DC never disappoints! My mom has been coming here since before I was born so I'm glad I was able to try this place.

Maybe they were all reserved? Not sure. We were greeted by the staffs and shown to the table. Smooth and fast. All the menu looked tempting so had hard time choosing which one to go with. Went with meatloaf and miso salmon. Meatloaf was really good! Flavorful with tender/juicy meat combined with onions, bell peppers etc. Miso salmon was also good! Okra and broccoli were adding more taste to the dish itself. No complaints at all! The prices were on the higher side though. Menu says each are $28. However, there was mandatory service charge of 20% and tax was calculated after the service charge, which end up being approximately $40 per menu item we got - miso salmon and meatloaf. Wish the menu price would just include service charges so prices would not be misleading with all the charges after. Not sure if this is because of World Cup 2026, but too bad they had to hit their customers with extra fees after enjoying the meals which could have ended happily rather than leaving a bad taste in the mouth.

An Elegant Breakfast Spot with Wonderful Staff (Just Mind the Checkout)…read moreThe Atmosphere & First Impressions High-End Finishes: The restaurant is beautifully designed with high-end finishes, creating a very upscale environment. Impeccably Clean: Upon arriving, we immediately noticed how clean and well-maintained the entire space was. Warm Welcome: The hostess was incredibly kind and set a great tone for our breakfast. The Food & Service Fantastic Menu: The menu offers a wonderful assortment of options. We were originally drawn in because we were excited to try their homemade Pop-Tart! Accommodating & Kind: Our waiter was a very nice gentleman. The kitchen was more than happy to make small adjustments to our orders for dietary needs, which we deeply appreciated. Kudos to the Staff: The waitstaff does a phenomenal job, especially considering the clientele. This area tends to attract a lot of pompous professionals, and we witnessed customers being incredibly rude to the staff on two back-to-back visits. A Note on the Crowd: For example, we were in on a Thursday afternoon and watched a large group of business professionals completely ignore their server. They wouldn't even acknowledge them or say thank you. It felt like olden times, where the staff were treated like servants to a king or queen and were just expected to take abuse. It was really bad. A Quick Note on the Checkout Process Rushed Payment: The payment process felt a bit rushed. The server hands you a small payment machine and quickly pushes you to complete the transaction right then and there. Keep an Eye Out: We aren't the type of people to scrutinize a bill closely--if it's right around the expected amount, we don't worry about it. However, the lady at the table right before us was loudly complaining about a service fee on her bill, and she ended up not leaving a tip at all because of it. Combined with how fast they push the payment machine on you, it might be worth taking a quick second to look over your total if you are the type of person who likes to verify the fine print. Come on people, do better! Overall Impression It is an expensive spot, but the food quality, cleanliness, and excellent service from the waitstaff make it worth a visit. The staff handles a tough crowd beautifully!

I sat at the bar and the bartender was friendly but busy restocking as it was towards the end of the day. I had the cheery old fashion as she promised it was one of their stronger drinks. I didn't find this to be true, it was actually overly sweet and tasted more like syrup. The second drink I picked was the bourbon bash. I thought this one would be sweet as it's made with different juices but it was actually on the stronger side. Definitely stronger and better than the Cherry old-fashioned. To snack on I went with the steak and cheese, eggrolls and bacon, blue cheese brussels sprouts. The egg rolls were great. Lots of flavor and the texture was spot on. The brussels sprouts were good for the most part. They did go a little overboard with the blue cheese for my tastebuds. My second visit was for a late breakfast. I started with an Irish coffee by recommendation of the bartender. It was a great way to start the day. It was strong enough but with the right balance. My breakfast plate didn't meet my expectations. My eggs were too running, bacon was chewy, toast was stale and the hash browns were only cooked on one side. I did ask for them to be crispy. I picked at it enough to curb my hunger.

We were sat in the solarium area, and it was during the heat dome, and it was really warm in there. Otherwise, though, it's completely charming inside and reminds us of some of the best French bistros we've been to in the country (e.g. Balzathar, Le Supreme). The three cocktails we tried--the frose, le jardin, and the clouseau--were all stunners. And of course the bread deserves another special mention, *especially* the room temperature butter. Thank you for not serving hard as hell butter! We shared the warm shrimp salad to start, and for $31, we were expecting more than a few avocado slices and 4 shrimp on it, but c'est la vie. The dressing was incredible, and the greens were crunchy. That's actually the only dish of the night that we thought was unfairly overpriced. One of us ordered the burger and the other got the rabbit pappardelle--you've got to get rabbit when you see it on a menu, which isn't often enough! There was a good amount of super tender meat and the pasta was perfectly al dente, all in a lightly stunning sauce. Chef's kiss. The burger was, no surprise, another triumph. There was juicy meat, bun integrity, and all the right accouterment notes. The fries are standard. Our daughter got their mac-n-cheese, which is probably just the gratin dish renamed. It was OK. We kind of got out of control for dessert and ordered the pot de creme, the cookie dough ice cream, and the profiteroles. Honestly, these were all good, but nothing that stood out as exemplary as with the savory stuff. Our only major complaint was the service. It was really spotty and while there was a very, very long gap in between when we got our water and then put in our drinks, but our mains came out almost directly after the salad. And the guy was just not very hospitable. Not necessarily a "bad" experience...it just could have been a lot better. Four stars, and we have already declared that we will be back again to "The Dip" because there is so much else on the menu that we want to try.

The restaurant business is tough, so I drafted this review with a bit of sadness. I had a good time…read morein large part due to the atmosphere and my date (my girlfriend). That said, a couple missteps that should not have occurred took this review into the negative realm. Let's start with the positive. This appears to be a great new addition to the neighborhood, and I hope it is supported. The appetizers were delicious and nicely presented. The pistachio feta with grilled pita was tasty and interesting. The halloumi with orange marmalade was as well. The hostess was engaging and friendly. The atmosphere was calming with a touch of casual refinement. One of the entrees was delicious (the scallops and grits). I'd order all three items mentioned so far, again. The negative. The second entree was the short rib. It was tender and.... Wow, way too salty. A shame because it was otherwise well cooked and nicely plated. But whoa. When the hostess came by, my girlfriend kindly said it was a bit salty. I "refined" her answer and said she was being nice, but it was very salty. The hostess went to note this for the kitchen (a positive for her), and because we are on the first floor outside the kitchen window I heard the conversation. The chef responded that he knew what had happened. Earlier when preparing the short rib someone (in his words) blasted it with salt. What this tells me is that they knew they'd made something close to inedible but served it anyway. At the end of our meal we had leftovers of the two apps and the short rib. We asked for a bit of extra pita to take home and they provided. Then the bill arrived. Not only was there no adjustment for the inedible short rib, but they charged us $2 for the pita. The least they could have done was just given us the pita. Ah well. Those two missteps; 1) serving a known and improperly prepared entree, and 2) not doing something to make good when reported, have led to this sadly negative review for a place that could and should have gotten a positive one. Hopefully someone there will see this, and the experience and review will be a learning opportunity that will help them thrive.

A friend and I popped in for dinner on a Thursday in May. There was one other full table so walking in without a reservation wasn't a problem. To eat, we ordered all the dips, which were excellent. The pita that comes with it was warm. We also got the shishito peppers. For our main, we ordered the Terracotta Köfte, scallops, and the Duck Shawarma. The köfte and shawarma were the winners! For dessert, we enjoyed the panna cotta and knafeh. Overall, we enjoyed our experience! The owner's father owns a restaurant in Istanbul. First time visiting Milk and Honey at the Wharf. I have been to the College park location though…read more Unfortunately, I did not have the best experience at this location. We were seated almost immediately which was great but it took the waiter 15 min to come to our table and the restaurant wasn't really crowded. Once he came to our table we gave him our order for drinks. He did not offer water so we asked for water. It took approximately 25 min to receive our drinks and still no water. He finally brought the water when I asked a second time. While we were waiting for our drinks he was steadily walking around aimlessly until he realized we did not receive our drinks. After delivering our drinks we were finally able to order our food. Our food came out in a decent time however, I was so annoyed by this point. For our entrees we ordered the Cajun salmon with grits and the Cajun pasta with chicken and salmon. The Cajun salmon was good but they gave a small portion in ratio of the amount of grits given. The grits were a bit cold and could have used some more seasoning. The Cajun pasta with chicken and salmon was delicious but could have been hotter as well. For drinks we ordered the pineapple Hennessy and whisky margarita. The Pineapple Hennessy was delicious. The margarita could have been stronger and less sweet. Overall, it was decent experience. Not sure if I will return though. Cheers!
