We realized it was taking long for food to come out, so we asked if they were bringing everything out together ? Now a waiter said that he didn't know we wanted appetizers as main course along with the sandwiches meal. In the end the candy meat appetizer came out first with no corn bread and bybthe time the rest if the food came out, it was cold. Limited selection of beers, service was lackluster and the food underwhelming. The burnt ends looked good, tender meat, good flavor on the bark. In terms of NYC BBQ, this is decent. I've been here about 3 times so far. While I love to smell the smoker, you won't get that. The staff is friendly and ensures the accuracy of your order. Nice atmosphere and decor. In terms of variety, you definitely get that with their BBQ options. I was missing that smoke in the BBQ, but the overall taste was good. The pulled chicken was a bit dry, but the burnt ends were flavorful. The cornbread is a 1/4 or a tiny piece of bread. I usually go to BBQ restaurants and get a whole muffin or piece. Just keep it for that tiny size. In terms of the value vs the food....naaaahhh. It's a bit over-priced for the amount of BBQ received. Good amount of customers and there was no need to wait to be seated. Ordered jalapeno margarita to start the night which costed $8 and tasted pretty good. I've had Butcher Bar quite a few times when they opened a pop-up location at the LIC Flea & Food Market more than 5 years ago, their food was delicious at that time. I happened to crave some BBQ and decided to come all the way to Astoria to try their restaurant. To be concise, unfortunately, everything was dreadful. The beef brisket (1/5) was absolutely dry and tough, it's comparable to meat reheated in the microwave for too long. The brisket had no bark (the smoky flavored outer layer of the brisket), very pale, and without a smoke ring. The smoked pork belly (2/5) was dry and slightly rubbery, but with a nice smoky flavor. The burnt ends (1/5) were inedible. It was cold, old, and extremely dry. The mac and cheese (3.5/5) was not far from standard. The Brussel sprouts (2/5) were very bitter and lacks seasoning. The fries (3/5) were stale and clearly old. The corn bread (1/5) was dry and hard. The service was slow and inattentive despite the restaurant mostly unoccupied. They had a decent amount of indoor and outdoor seating. The interior attempts to display a rustic, homestyle feel. We arrived around 6 and were lucky to snag a table out front as a couple was leaving. To start we had the Mac and cheese, double smoked burnt ends and cornbread with honey butter. The burnt ends were melt-in-your-mouth good. They're so good that the restaurant runs out before the end of the day (every day!) The Mac and cheese was basic but creamy. I wish It had more of a zing to keep me intrigued but it served its purpose. The cornbread was so delish we took half to go with a tiny cup of the butter. For an entree I had the burger (basic one). It comes with slaw and pickles, the perfect salty and creamy combo to compliment the beef. The sesame seed bun was a nice touch. Very high quality meat and cooked to perfection. It only comes in medium well! My partner had the Reuben with thin sliced beef brisket. It came packed between 2 buttered and toasted Texas toast slices. This may be the worst BBQ I've ever had. Which leads one to question the authenticity of its Zagat and Michelin mentions. The meats in both pork and beef platters were lacking in flavor, smoke, and moisture. The fat had apparently been rendered before it was "smoked." Smoked is in quotes because I could taste no trace of smokiness in the meats or beans. Not even liquid smoke! The texture was just weird all around. The burnt ends and pork belly were dry and rubbery. I've had parboiled ribs before that were slow cooked after that were entirely serviceable, although not the way real Q should be prepared, but these meats all seemed to have been harder boiled to me. I've eaten not great barbecue and left somewhat satisfied but this is the WORST. PERIOD. EVER. PERIOD. This place is simply theatre staging and all the food are props. It all looks correct but tastes awful. The Mac and cheese's texture was decent and it was saucy but again it failed to deliver any real flavor and what flavor it did have was certainly NOT cheese. More akin to a buttered noodle in flavor. The baked beans were probably the least offensive but that didn't stop them from also being off and strange. Which brings us to probably the weirdest thing on the plate, the cornbread. It's odd tan color and odder nutty flavor I'm guessing is owed to using whole wheat flour in addition to cornmeal? I really can't be sure. No buttermilk tang. There were bits of corn kernels in it and if that's your thing you're in luck. Do yourself a favor and go to John Brown's or Pig Beach instead. This place is just awful. On a positive note the FOH staff are all very friendly and accommodating and the atmosphere is charming and correct for a Q spot. it breaks my heart that butcher bar appears to be going downhill fast based on my last two experiences there over the past four months. Several of our favorites (the Goat salad, etc) are no longer served but are still on the menu. Although there were only two other tables being served on this Sunday afternoon, all three of our orders from the brunch platter served to us at room temperatur.The hash brown and egg platters, and coffee would have been much better if served hot. I ate the salad while waiting for the server to return as I was going to request that my food be heated up in the microwave, but she didn't return and I was hungry so I ate some and took the rest home. I checked the online menu after we got home and noticed quite a few differences. i understand menus cost money, but they could simply use a black permanent marker to black out items no longer available. it was frustrating when I was told my first selection was no longer available, and told the same thing for my next choice. Ok so like Stained sang, It's been awhile. So after moving to LIC a few years back I stopped writing. Well this is the perfect reason to start back up. After tasting the worst food I've eaten in 3 years we see a black hair in the chicken sandwich container (pictures attacked). I've got brown hair and she has blonde. Disgusting. I mean just gross. The chicken sandwich, with the hair, tasted like bun on bun no chicken flavor at all. The fries that came with it were soggy and cold. The ribs (pictured) had 1/2 the meat and 2 bones. Tasteless. Called well in advance of event, but she said they generally need 3 days notice. Our conversation really made me feel comfortable about their attention and professionalism. Added delivery for a charge of $40 which totally freed us from having to drive round trip to Astoria. Ordered trays of sliced lean beef brisket (12-hour smoked brisket) scheduled to arrive an hour before party was to start. My confirm and receipt was sent by text within minutes. Day of, and Butcher Bar arrived right on time, delivered by a smiling, courteous driver. We expected brisket and sauces. The bag was packed with: a stack of heavy duty plates, napkins, enough forks for a small army, bags of potato rolls, three generous bottles of different sauces and the brisket - which was a huge hit with the crowd. As an Angus beef farmer who raises grass fed beef this was one of the best brisket's I have had that I didn't fix myself. I loved every bite. We also had the ribs that were tender and very enjoyable. Pictured here is the set up they have: you walk in, after either ordering in advance or on the spot, and they serve you up the same insanely tasty food for the same reasonable prices. I so wanted to love this place, it's been hard finding good local barbecue since The Strand closed. I ordered the dry rubbed ribs, they were dry and tasted like fake smoke. It came with coleslaw which was typical supermarket bought deli style, pickles that were just normal jarred slices and cornbread that was hard and grainy and couldn't even be saved by the overly sweet way too thick honey butter it came with. I'm very sad to say that this has been the worst BBQ experience I've had this year, my daughter and I have been going through BBQ restaurants and sharing reviews amongst our friends, sadly today is the first review we are posting, we both just got out of the bathroom with stomach aches from the sub-par BBQ we just ate. The taste of the BBQ was off and not worth coming back again. When presenting this to the manager we were told there's nothing wrong with the taste of the BBQ. I think the place is having a staffing issue with front of house and back of house, maybe they need a visit from Gordon Ramsey to whip them back into shape.
