I've passed this place many times and have always wanted to try it. I finally had the opportunity to try it for lunch and I have no regrets. They had coquito for the holidays which was actually quite tasty. It was thick and sweet. We ordered their butcher platter which included 3 meats and 3 sides. We ordered their bbq pulled chicken, bbq pulled pork and pork belly. Our sides were the mac and cheese, Brussel sprouts, corn bread, coleslaw and mash potatoes with gravy. We also ordered a side burnt ends. I don't even know where to begin; I will start with favorites. I absolutely loved the burnt ends, they were very tender and flavorful. My favorite side was hands down the Brussel sprouts, they were crunchy but also just melted in my mouth. All the other meats were also delicious as well as the sides. I didn't enjoy the corn bread too much but everything else was exceptional. The service was also great, our server was very attentive and constantly passed by to see if we needed anything. I walked into this place because I was meeting a group of friends for a birthday dinner. As soon as I walked in, most people were frustrated because of how long they've waited for food or how many times their order had to sent back. So that wasn't a great start.. I ordered a jalapeño margarita, it was very tasty - I liked it a lot and I'd totally recommend it. The food: I ordered the mopped & chopped brisket sandwich. My 3 stars are based on the food. This was not anywhere near the best bbq. My sandwich was moist and saucy but there was a lack of flavor- real bbq flavor. The tiny sides look cheap and terrible on the plate. The cole slaw - not good. The corn bread: reminded me of cafeteria cornbread. Price: the price was pretty expensive for what we had. Ok I've had many a barbecue, but hands down this exceeds anything I've experienced across the five boroughs! By far!!! We did take out and drove back to the UES. At home we enjoyed ribs for 3 days over a week period of time and each time we reheated it was like the first time - simply magic! Will return in a hurry! PS. My husband and I had a fantastic meal on a Saturday night. We got there at 6 and we're sat right away. They're very compliant with Covid restrictions (table spaced apart, barriers between tables) so we felt very comfortable. For apps we had the burnt ends of course and the house made queso. Both were delicious. The burnt ends were melt in your mouth tender. For my meal I had the fried chicken sandwich. It was juicy and super crispy. The pickles and Cole slaw that came with it were fantastic. My husband had the brisket, which he said was the best brisket he ever had. For dessert we shared the key lime pie which was wonderfully light and tart. The whole meal was fantastic and we'll definitely go back again. **GOUPON MEAL** Stepped in for an early dinner around 5pm on a Friday mid-March. It's a small room with the usual southern decorations filled w/ fairly new looking furniture. We were immediately greeted with a smile and seated with menus by the host, the room was 2/3 full with diners. Menus, water, condiments and utensils were placed right away. I found it awkward to be seated at the first two tables that were part of a row in the middle of the room. Later on, the room apparently got too hot so the front door was opened and had us feeling cold from the draft coming directly at the middle row tables by the door. Not too heavy on the garlic, and broccoli done just right. Mac&cheese - on the creamier side, not cheesy at all, enjoyable except Mac could be softer. Chicken tacos - pulled chicken on the dry side, veggie / sauce topping made the whole bite good. Burnt beef ends - pretty good, less fibrous, really soft - maybe too soft texture almost mushy. Expected to be more burnt? 'Mama' chicken sandwich - only took a bite of the chicken tender piece since friend said it wasn't worth the whole bite. Good level of spice, tender, but nothing special. Beef brisket - little to none smoked flavor, so dry! Cole slaw - surprisingly delicious. Crunchy, fresh, not soaked like usual slaw. Cornbread - soft, not grainy, and sweet. Mediocre taste. Mexicane orange soda - mix between tang and regular orange soda w/less fizz. Lemonade - not to tangy, not too sweet. Just right and thirst quencher. Apple cake - not your usual apple pie. Warm, soft-almost doughy, not too sweet, tasty apple pieces. In the beginning all went well with a pleasant welcome and super friendly waitress. The room was getting packed and we started to notice patrons waiting with a face of impatience. Didn't take long for our food to come after ordering but I later realized there was only one waitress on the floor! 14-16 tables being served by 1 person?? Funnily enough, food inspectors had arrived for their inspection during this time. This pretty much jammed up everyone's service because that one waitress was chosen to guide the inspectors. A second girl had taken her place but service went downhill. The food wasn't all that. Price to portion ratio is within standards. Taste not so much. We enjoyed the sides more than the entrées. Even if the inspector situation didn't happen, service was unsatisfactory. After inspectors left, both waitresses were on the floor but getting a lemonade took over half hour. Trying to waive them down for additional orders and finally asking for the check was a real challenge. Poor waitresses were stretched thin trying to tend to everyone in the room. I went to Butcher Bar and I didn't know what to expect. I went because of all the rave reviews on Yelp so I had to check it out. When I entered the atmosphere of the restaurant was great especially the servers who were so friendly and very knowledgeable about everything on the menu. The appetizer that I ordered was their infamous meat candy which is 1/4 lbs of their award winning double smoked beef burnt ends (limited supply daily). Also I ordered from the carvery section - a bunch of meats such as the smoked pork belly, smoked and pulled pork, smoked beef brisket, and mashed potatoes with gravy. Don't forget to check-in to get a free side. One of my favorite places to eat in Astoria has to be Butcher Bar. The staff, from the hostess to the servers are always very friendly and attentive, and the restaurant is always kept very clean. I usually like to go for brunch on a Sunday and go for the Country Benedict which is their delicious poached eggs, corn bread and, Brisket or I go for the Big Butcher which is Pancakes, smoked bacon, country sausage and baked beans. I also always order a side of their infamous Burnt Ends aka Meat Candy which is 1/4 of smoked beef burnt ends which is absolutely delicious. I can see why they are award winning. After inserting the straw and taking about two sips of the drink I noticed an object in it. I took it out and it was an insect. Normally I'm not in the business of leaving bad reviews if places handle mishaps appropriately- however this was not the case. When I called them the immediate response was that the insect could have gotten in the drink as they poured it or after I left the property and that they would give me another one if I wanted. I told them I would prefer a refund because it could have already been in their pre-made mixture and I highly doubt an insect flew in the bag and under the plastic lid after I walked around the corner home. The person then put me on a brief hold and came back to inform me that they couldn't give me a refund because they had no "proof" and it was "my word against theirs" and that it "likely flew in once you left" and "we don't know if you took the lid off" (which I told them I hadn't repeatedly) and that if there was a bug in my drink I "obviously would have thrown it out". After a little back and forth the person finally said if I brought the drink back to them for "proof" they would refund me. Poor business management to treat a customer like they are lying. The amount of times I have walked past Butcher Bar and not tried it is unacceptable. Because apparently I was missing out. I stopped by for a quick lunch around 2pm and they weren't busy at all. We decided to split an order of the Meat Candy Burnt Ends Appetizer (~$11) and their BBQ Blue Plate Special (~$10). The BBQ Blue Plate Special is basically their lunch special. It includes your choice of 1 meat and 2 sides. We went with Smoked Beef Brisket for the meat and Mac n' Cheese and French Fries for the sides. The Meat Candy Burnt Ends are a MUST! I don't know what or how they do it, but this award-winning dish is phenomenal. It's super tender, juicy, melts-in-your-mouth with a balance of sweet and savory. It goes well with the BBQ sauce on the side too! They don't give you too much of it per order which is really my only complaint. The BBQ Blue Plate Special is a great deal! You get a lot of food for $10! The brisket was smokey and tender. The BBQ sauce complements this meat very well. The French Fries were solid as a side but the Mac n Cheese, I could have done without. It tasted too artificial for my liking. I would go with another side next time. If you're looking for some solid BBQ in Astoria, Butcher Bar is honestly the place to go! Went to this restaurant (roughly) two weeks ago with my family, received terrible service, a lukewarm meal, and the confirmation that I will never be back. It took over an hour to get our meal and drinks only to receive the wrong food and a lukewarm meal. I would go into further details, but I see the owner tends to reply to negative reviews by bullying customers rather than owning up to their mistakes. There are SO MANY good restaurants, with good people and friendly service- go there, support them. I would not return to this restaurant even if my meal was paid for. One star for the lack of classyness of the gentleman who dare approached my partner after we waited an hour and half for a dry cold pulled pork sandwich which I refused to eat. A group of elites at an event, get together to head home and remember a previous event at Butcher Bar. So they decide to stop in and introduce me to a totally new establishment and possibly my new favorite bartender. (And the start of a FUN night. Lol) If you didn't already catch the clue Chris was great. He was super excited that the other ladies were returning customers and that I was a newbie. He personally took care of us without hesitation. Monday's are 2 for 1 apps and he explained everything and even honored our check-in offers (a free side of your choice). He mixed up some good drinks with his own special twist and hooked us up with some apple pie moonshine. Chris made sure all of ours orders were accurate and each of our bills were on point. Butcher Bar has a lot of good things happening. For one - they serve barbecued meats with brunch. Brilliant! Two favorite foods (bbq and breakfast) on one plate? Yes please! Second - it's got a cool vibe. Very casual with simple wood tables with red chairs, white subway tile, and chili pepper lights hanging from the ceiling. And who doesn't love a neon sign spelling out BBQ. The portions are kindof amazing too. For brunch most items are served with a drink (Bloody Mary, Mimosa, Bellini, Draft Beer, Coffee, HotTea, Juice, IcedTea or Soda) AND all dishes come with home fries, a salad and toast. It's not fries or a salad - its BOTH. For $16 I got a really generous quesadilla stuffed with pork, potatoes, salad, toast and (refillable) sweet tea. What's not so amazing? That brunch quesadilla was stuffed with pork - but it was very plain. I didn't get any sense of seasoning or sauce. And the combination of monterey jack and parm was ok... but boring in many ways. This could have been an amazing opportunity for bursts of flavors and there just wasn't any. I was also missing the eggs in this brunch offering. Maybe its just me but I think a breakfast quesadilla needs some eggs. and not to nitpick - but my salad was over dressed. Halfway through the meal I found the leaves to be soggy and I didn't end up finishing. So lesson learned with the pork quesadilla. Tried it, liked it, but will probably order something different next time I'm at Butcher Bar. read more
