Butterfly was an interesting find when I was looking for a place to meet up with a friend near the metro. I didn't realize it was the rooftop bar and restaurant of the hotel. Friendly staff directed me to the elevator, and I rode to the top floor. The moment you walk in you feel like you're in some sort of tropical breezeway. Fire pits and large butterflies combined with tropical wallpaper gives everything an incredibly fun ambience. Service was quiet and muted. The whole place had a quiet, chill vibe in fact. Ordered a couple margaritas and a taco, but would love to come back another time and try their ceviche and queso fundido. Everything was good and this was a fun find. read more

My friend made a resy here for an early bday dinner for me on a Friday evening. Took the elevator up to the rooftop and wow... What a cute space! Right off the pool at the Shay hotel, the Butterfly bar and restaurant gives the vibe that you're on vacation, perhaps at a large resort, even out of the country... at least where we sat it did. There was a nice breeze and it was a warm day, perhaps this also contributed to the feels of vacay. The cocktail menu was nice and while slightly limited, the food was great as well. We were a group of 5 and arrived at different times and the staff was really accommodating. Most of use valet for parking and another parked in the Metro structure. Unfortunately we found out the grill was broken only after we arrived last night - so they were only serving "cold" dishes. We ended up leaving. Would have been nice to have had some warning. Don't flutter by! Drop in and give 'em a try! Butterfly Restaurant is part of the José Andrés Group. It opened at The Shay in December of 2024. There's Valet Parking for the Hotel. Rate is $18 for the first three hours. I don't think it is validated, but I'm not sure. We parked over at the Ivy Station Parking Structure. We ended up being able to secure a 2 HR Validation Ticket from a representative of sorts at a booth there. After lunch, when we passed by, the booth was gone. Thankfully, the validation ticket was good and our parking was free. Butterfly Restaurant is located on the rooftop, 6th Floor, of The Shay Culver City Hotel. A few steps after you exit the elevator, you'll be at the restaurant. It's hard to miss all the butterflies! There is a pool up here where guests have to walk through the restaurant to get there. I think it would be awkward dressed for the pool and walking amongst diners. On the other hand, the restaurant is completely open on the side where the pool is. You get the breezy outdoorsy vibe inside the restaurant. There's also an outdoors seating section just before the pool area. What we shared: *Guacamole - it is served in a fun Pig painted molcajete and comes with chips. *Chips & Salsa - have to buy it if you want some salsa. It wasn't very spicy, but had a good flavor. I love the chips they serve here! Too bad Chips & Salsa isn't complimentary, though! *Ceviche Citricos - comprised with bass, citrus pineapple-habanero marinade, jicama, & fresno chiles. I would get this again! The Citrus includes small pieces of grapefruit and oranges. Such a refreshing ceviche! *Carnitas Taco - comes with confit pork, avocado salsa verde, pork rinds, onions, & cilantro on top of a blue corn tortilla. Those Pork Rinds aka Chicharrons add a nice little crunch! *Pescado Baja California Taco - includes a crispy masa local rockfish, shredded cabbage, chile arbol mayo, crema, & salsa pico. It was good, but I can't say it warrants a $9 price tag. *Chocoflan - it's part chocolate cake and part creamy flan sitting on a vanilla coffee caramel. Delicious way to end our meal! I dislike paying for parking, so I'm unsure if we'll return. I'm happy it worked out that we were able to park for free close-by! I would love to return to try their Pozole! read more

Butterfly easily ranks as one of the best Mexican restaurants I've been to in LA. The whole experience felt special from the moment we arrived. It's located on the sixth floor of a stunning hotel, right next to the pool, and the atmosphere was incredible. The sun was out, the breeze was perfect, and there was a live DJ playing, it genuinely felt like I had been transported to Los Cabos. The menu is tapas style, which made it fun to try a bunch of different things. We started with chips, guac, queso, and salsa, and honestly, those alone set the tone. The chips were some of the freshest I've had, light and crisp, and all the dips were balanced and flavorful. Service was hands down the best I've experienced in the city. Friendly, attentive, and just made the whole meal feel elevated without being stiff. The ceviches were standouts, I tried the tuna, and shrimp, super fresh, vibrant, and plated beautifully. I also had a fish taco, which had more heat than expected but packed a ton of flavor. We wrapped the meal with a tres leches that was incredibly milky, had a hint of lime zest and just enough rum to make it interesting. It totally sealed the meal on a high note. The first thing you should know when you get to the restaurant is the parking is extremely expensive. To the best of my knowledge they only have valet parking for about $18, Or you can park in the area off National Bl. but it's quite expensive as well since it's by the hour. I don't know exactly how much. As far as the food goes, we tried the Dine LA menu. The guacamole was plentiful and tasty. It had a lot of lime juice, but it was still good. The next thing was a shrimp cocktail that came with DineLA .It's not a standard shrimp cocktail. It's cut up shrimp in a spicy sauce and some small veggies. It was still good, but small. Where things went south was the Carnitas taco was so F'in dry. It was barely edible and the tortilla that they use for their is the blue corn type which was like it was not cooked at all! The Carnitas meat was dry and tough that I wondered if it was freshly cooked. We had to ask for salsa just to make it go down to add some moisture. When it came to the desserts, I had the chocolate flan and I thought it was excellent and I would highly recommend it. I'm not sure what the situation is as far as coming back to this Restaurant. But one thing for sure I will NOT get the Carnitas taco or anything with carnitas because that was the worst part of the meal. We dined al fresco, which gave us a lovely view of the poolside deck. It's the kind of place where you can enjoy a nice meal, sip a cocktail, and even catch a game thanks to the TVs around the space. It's absolutely perfect for a chill but classy hangout. The service was great. From the moment we arrived, we were warmly greeted by every staff member we encountered. We were seated quickly and our server made sure we were well taken care of throughout the visit. Our food was prepared beautifully and came out at a perfect pace. As for the food.... My boyfriend and I ordered a light meal since we had dinner plans later, but everything we had was seriously delicious. We shared the Atuna Pacifico (a fresh ceviche) with chips, plus the Carnitas and Pollo a la Parilla tacos. Everything was flavorful, fresh, and surprisingly filling. We wanted to try Butterfly since Jose Andres took it over and it was disappointing. The queso fundido just tasted like melted cheese with none of the tequila flavor coming through. Even the chorizo we added had little flavor. The asada and fish taco and the brussels all heavily tasted of lime and were difficult to enjoy. The Camerones Negro were made with with a strong black garlic sauce that gave it a very savory taste. The Salt and Air Margarita is so good here too. Salted foam on top that takes the margarita to a more elevated level. Service was friendly and helpful in picking out their highly recommended dishes. The chips were light & crispy. Salsa was flavorful & guac tasted home made. We shared the Ahi tuna Pacifico & the Shrimp ceviche. These dishes were plated beautifully. The ahi tuna & shrimp were fresh. The marinade on the ahi tuna had a distinctive taste at first but I got used to it kept digging into it with my spoon. The shrimp ceviche was packed with flavor. As for tacos, I had the fish taco & hubby had the carnitas. Both were good but I definitely liked the fish taco better. It was the best I've had. The tortilla was watery but it didn't break off at all while I was eating it which was amazing. Lastly for dessert, we tried one of each on the menu which were the chocoflan & tres leches. We hosted a surprise 20th work anniversary celebration here and it was absolutely perfect! The staff did an amazing job at keeping our surprise. Everyone was incredibly attentive and absolutely delightful. The food was spectacular (so much food)! Wish I could write a better review but this was our experience on 8/7 after ordering the DineLA menu. We started with our reservation at 7:15pm. We were a party of 6 and were sat in the corner near the kitchen. It looked like they only had 1 large table so we couldn't have asked to sit in a different area. The ambience was super cute. We saw the sunset and the views were over looking culver city and beyond. Very Picturesque worthy. We started with ordering drinks. Our server was very kind and described each cocktail for us. After we ordered our drinks I took 20/30 minutes until our drinks were brought out and we had to flag to the manager that we were starving and wanted to order. The server did apologize that the bar was backed up but not until we had flagged to the manager that no one has checked in on us. The drinks were mid some people at the table liked theirs others didn't and had to give them back (the paloma and skinny marg) For our first course we all had the guac. It was a small portion but perfect for a single serving and loved how they served individual chips - great portion for those. After we finished the guac it probably took another 20 minutes ish until we got our second course which was the Atun. Pretty good flavor and decent portion as well. But oh my gosh it felt like we waited years until we got out main course. Especially because we were sitting next to the kitchen it felt like everyone else was getting their food before us. I ordered the Asada taco which was a good portion and good flavor and left me full but it was luke warm at best and my tortilla was falling apart because of how sougy it was. This leads me to believe it was left out for a good chunk of time before it was served to me. After our main course we waited probably another 20 minutes until our dessert arrived and at this point is was already 9pm it had taken 2 hours from start to finish. And it's not like we were ordering well done steaks that take a long time to make. We're unsure where the disconnect was and why our service took so long. I also felt our waiter never checked in on us the whole 2 hours and didn't refill our water until we ask for the check lol. The cherry on top because we were a group of 6 the restaurant automatically added a 20% tip. Not sure if it's because service already knew they were going to get that automatic tip or if it's because our bill was on the smaller side since we ordered DineLa but really disappointed as this was supposed to be a celebration dinner. With such beautiful ambience I wish I could say I could see myself returning. read more

Went late morning on a Saturday. Service was excellent, nice waiter and a very friendly bus boy. The shrimp dish is not to be missed. The guacamole was alright but I wouldn't order it if I returned. My sister and I had the tacos and I also thought they were very good. We shared the flan for dessert, nothing special there. Our margaritas were mixed up by the waiter, and my sister immediately knew something was wrong. This was interesting because I witnessed our waiter trying both with a small straw. Perhaps try different glasses or mark them so you could differentiate in future. It wasn't very busy and a mistake like that really should not have been made. Parking at the hotel was $18 and the attendant was not allowed to take cash! Except for his tip of course. read more

Very disappointing experience. We ordered drinks and they didn't come out until near the end of the meal. The ceviche was incredibly salty and didn't come with anything to eat with (no bread or chips). The chilaquiles were the best thing, and very delicious with perfect sauce. And the drinks that took forever (mezcal marg and a yuzu marg) tasted like beachside well drinks. Very rarely have I not finished a cocktail, but I left 90% of it on the table. Food: for $25, I got an appetizer (guac and homemade tortilla chips), small ceviche, one fish taco, and a dessert - honestly a great deal, especially compared to their typical menu prices!
