I cannot recommend Byrd's Barbecue enough to anyone that is in the Durham area!! I was looking for an authentic BBQ place while visiting Durham for the weekend and was recommended Byrd's by an Uber driver who claimed it was an amazing local spot with the best BBQ. I decided to take her advice and could not have been happier! The service was exceptional -- James was truly the kindest business owner I have come across and the staff continuously checked in on us and even offered to try a sample of different menu items that we did not order. The BBQ was absolutely DELICIOUS! The best BBQ we have had in a long time. We wished we lived closer to Durham so we could visit this spot regularly, but will definitely be back again. The barbecue ribs are DELICIOUS! Flavorful, Smokey and fall right off the bone. The Max and cheese is surprisingly light. Delicious and creamy, but delightfully light. This is another small, mom and pop BBQ restaurant we'd not eaten at in a while, out a bit on the northeastern side of Durham. Byrd's has been around for years, but was bought by Noah Temple in 2005, and he added some additional smoked meats to the menu. The pork here is nice, most & tender, but not as smokey tasting as I remember from prior trips, still not at all bad. We also tried a Chili Dog (very nice), a Beef Brisket Sandwich (good, but it is on Texas Toast, which always gets soggy), and FFs, which are very, very good. They offer some other sandwich choices, and a few plates, as well. The Fried Chicken here is always good, as is the Brunswick Stew - in fact it is one of my favorite versions. The service is nice, friendly and efficient. You order at the counter in the back, grab a seat up front and they'll bring you your food. read more

Honestly, I think this is the best BBQ in all of Durham. The price and quality can't be beat! I've eaten here many times and never had anything bad. The brisket is soooo tender. The baked beans are yummy and the collards greens are just seasoned enough. The pulled pork can be a bit a fatty and I think the Mac and cheese could be skipped... but the hush puppies always come out hot and the counter service is always quick and efficient! we had to come for a doctor's at Duke Medical from south of Richmond. My wife wanted something with comfort food. We located the Byrd's BBQ and stopped by. My wife got pork sandwich, fries and a dessert. She ate the dessert first. I got a brisket sandwich, fries and dessert. The brisket was moist and delicious. I wish I had gotten 2 sandwiches. We were looking for a North Carolina style bbq place on our way from Durham to NJ. Byrd's fit the bill plus it is open on Mondays! The brisket was tender and juicy and a generous portion with sides of baked beans and mac & cheese. They gave us two sauces, one sweet and one vinegar based. The second plate was chicken (fried) and pulled pork. It was a massive order of pulled pork with 2 pieces of chicken. The pulled pork was excellent, not fatty whatsoever. The chicken was meh. The collards were tender and benefitted from a splash of the vinegar based sauce. Unfortunately they gave us a second order of macaroni & cheese instead of coleslaw. Our son had no problem with this! Their hush puppies come with the plates and are awesome. The two plates were more than enough food for us and we could have fed a 4th person. I love the fact that NC bbq isn't over seasoned, over sauced bbq. You can taste the meat, it was yummy. Make sure you check your take out for the appropriate utensils, we were short. Also, there is a great park a mile away with picnic tables. Keep in mind that they do NOT wear masks! We kept ours on the entire time and ate elsewhere. read more

The BBQ is good, but what I really love, is their meatloaf. It is only available on Thursdays and unfortunately sells out quickly. I came here with the dude, and we ordered 2 pulled BBQ sandwiches, a St. Louis rib plate (Wednesday special) with mac and cheese, corn nuggets, hush puppies, and then had banana pudding for dessert. This was not my favorite BBQ. It was very tender, the bun was delicious and I enjoyed the slaw. Still, the pork itself just didn't have enough flavor for me, and I had to keep reapplying house sauce to get it how i wanted it. Boy liked it a lot, but I just wasn't so much of a fan. The ribs were the same - really tender, but not much flavor until you slathered it with the table sauce. Hush puppies were good. The Corn nuggets were something else - creamy, sweet, dessert-like. Byrds is a no fuss no hassle place for good bbq. We had the pulled pork and beef brisket both with immense pork and beef flavor (respectively). The corn nuggets are the reason I chose to visit this middle of nowhere restaurant. Creamed corn fried up to perfection. Not too overpowering or greasy, very solid.
