Byrd's chicken is the chicken sandwich restaurant equivalent of a tourist trap souvenir shop. My first bite into the sandwich caused a spritz of OIL to hit my lip, burning it. Yes, I know it's fried chicken. But so is Dave's Hot Chicken, and it's not this greasy! Also just doesn't taste good. Very bland. Their sauce does not help. Also, be prepared to go next door and buy something if you need a restroom. It's laughable, that they send you to the business next to theirs, while charging wild prices for their sub-par food. The fries are okay. Typical shoestring fries. Obviously not nearly enough to make up for a bland sandwich I couldn't even finish. My partner and I have wanted to try this place for quite some time now, as a comparison to Dave's. So we'll save you the trouble: this place sucks. Byrds hot chicken - 3.5/10 Pros: Juicy chicken and friendly service, crinkle fries, buttered and toasted bread instead of plain bread. (over toasted). Fresh and hot. Cons: No restroom, messy storefront, no fountain drinks nor refills, sticky tables, limited seating. Cheese fries were bland and it tasted to milky, wouldve been better with spice or seasoning. Regular crinkle fries were to salty and after a few bites needed a drink. It was also inconsistently cooked. The seasoning was sour, herby? The toast was burnt. The chicken needs more breading, it was also very soggy on the bottom. There was oil pooled at the bottom. The breading was falling off the chicken and made it difficult to eat. I had to take a seperate bite of chicken and then breading. The seasoning is not like your regular hot chicken and is not close to the seasoning, it reminded me very much of canes just spicy. The seasoning was very inconsistent, some be salty, spicy, or bland. The sauce was also way too herby and tasted weird, i'm not 100% sure what sauce it was but I'm thinking it was the 24K sauce. Disappointed. Firstly credit card machine down so cash only. No biggy it happens. Waited 30 min for the food and then told they accidentally made my kids spicy when it was supposed to be no spice. So they needed to remake. Waited another 15 min. Took it home and it was spicy. Wtf. On my way back to complain. I will say my chicken was very tasty though. Dropped from two start to one after I told him about the mistake and asked him to rush the as it was already 2 hours past my kids bedtime. He pointed around at the crowd and said he couldn't. The restaurant was oddly quiet, even though we could see them preparing our food, and service was slow, despite the restaurant not being busy. I had hoped they would let us know when our food was ready, but communication was poor. The Mild Nashville Sandwich was a pretty good hot chicken sandwich, not better than Howlin' Rays, but just as good as Dave's Hot Chicken. When you enter, the menu is displayed on the screens and you order on a tablet. The service was quick and the food was hot even after the walk back to the hotel. I got a medium spice Nashvylle and fries. The heat, I think, was more than a medium but if you eat with the bun and coleslaw it helped with the heat. I really enjoyed the sandwich. As a lover of fried chicken, I can say that this place did not disappoint. I ordered a chicken sandwich and Dale, the owner, kindly substituted the buns for cabbage and homemade coleslaw. You can tell he really cares about his customers by the way he communicates to them about spice level and preference. I asked him to make my chicken extra spicy and he did! The chicken tenders were crisp and hot. The tomatoes, cabbage, and fries helped to cut the spice nicely. Everything paired nicely with the chipotle mayo and ketchup provided. This is pretty good hot chicken. Kids meals are preformed frozen patties that don't even taste like chicken. Music is infuriating. Too loud, not edited for language, and the most annoying pop music that exists (Adele, Travie McCoy, Miley, just stop please). These places that only take orders via a computer drive me crazy, you can't ask any questions. The restaurant does not have adequate AC or ventilation, it's freaking hot. Also not a good value, seems pretty pricey for just a sandwich, may just be CA prices. We grabbed dinner here a few nights ago while on vacation at Disneyland. My son is a fried chicken connoisseur and loves to seek out the best chicken whenever we're on a trip. Byrd's looked promising on Yelp so we added it to our list for this trip to Anaheim. The inside is pretty small- they do have a few tables, but it's cramped with folks waiting to pick up their orders, so we decided to take our food back to the hotel. The wait wasn't too long, but once we got the text that our food was ready, it was not actually ready- went to the counter to grab it and were told they were still working on it. The employees were very friendly when we did pick up. I found the food itself a little underwhelming. We like Dave's Hot Chicken and I found this a little bland in comparison. I got the Byrd Bomb and expected it to be full of flavor, but it was mostly just spicy with nothing else coming through (it has fries, slaw, sauce and pickles on it) even though I only went with medium spice. Fries were under seasoned and undercooked a bit IMO. My son chose the mild seasoning for his sandwich and still it was very spicy with not much other flavor. I had this place for the first time and it was so good! I had their 3 strip meal with fries! The strips of chicken were well seasoned and cooked! Their dipping sauces were also a big hit! I tried their ranch, hot buffalo, and chipotle mayo. The only thing I wish it would have came with as well was another side BUT obviously don't want to be exactly like their competition and have to stand out. I can see this place having a lot of foot traffic while people of leaving the convention center, Disney or California. We were staying nearby this restaurant and decided to try it. Service is friendly and fairly quick. Chicken is made to order to ensure its crispy and juicy as soon as you get it. Food: Byrd bomb - fries are cooked well, chicken tender is chopped up and throughout the dish. The sauce has a good spice. Coleslaw and pickles give a nice refreshing acidity, sweetness and crunch. The Texas toast at the bottom does soak up some of that flavor. I do feel it's on the heavy/oily side so easily very filling. 4/5. Mac and cheese with tender - Mac and cheese is creamy and cheesy, noodles cooked well not overly soft. The tender is deliciously crispy and juicy. 5/5. Came here for the first time yesterday for lunch and I was impressed by this hot chicken spot! I ordered their tender combo with their hot spice level and with a side of fries and potato salad. The chicken was freshly fried and made to order and I ordered through their self-service kiosk but you can also order at the counter if it isn't too busy. I waited around 10 minutes but it was worth it since everything was piping hot and fresh. They also include their version of comeback sauce with your order which was a nice, little addition. The fries had a good amount of seasoning on them and were crispy and hot when I ate them and they had a satisfying crunch. The potato salad was refreshing and cool to help calm the heat from the hot tenders that I ordered which were quite crispy on the outside and juicy and tender on the inside. The tenders were quite big and were larger than most that I've had at other hot chicken places. Their hot level was quite spicy and good for my spice tolerance and I would order it again for sure! A few things they changed that they shouldn't have: - Smaller chicken strips. They look like they cut them into 3 pieces. Now they are small and one of my strips tasted like fish . - You can't choose your spice level for the strip combo anymore. You can only choose the spice level with the Nashville Sandwich. The other options are just for the sauce (bbq etc) that you want. Surprising and misleading for a place that has "Hot Chicken" in the title to have such limited "Hot Chicken". - Overall lack of seasoning. - Smaller portions overall.
