Went on a Sunday , around past 7 pm. It was my first time there. I was craving for some chicken and I saw this place on google and yelp. The place is in a small strip of stores that is best reached by using gps (as one of the reviewers said) It's not that big, probably a good 20-30 persons inside and a few more tables outside. When I arrived, the place was probably 70 % filled. Almost all the tables were occupied. I noticed that there were 2 wait staff going around taking orders and cleaning tables. I waited to get a seat outside. Looking at the menu, the best go to would be their chicken combo. Honestly, the small or light version could be split for 2-3 persons and then, they could probably add a couple more dishes to try. But if hungry, just get the bigger one. When dining in, they would serve the chicken either style or both, with soup, rice, and their sauces. Dark soy, garlic and ginger, sweet and sour, and tamarind sauce. When having hainanese chicken, the meat should be moist and the sauce would elevate it. Their chicken was spot on. Flavor was there and it wasn't dry..... Unfortunately, i found the sauces ... specifically...garlic and ginger a bit too tamed for me. I would have preferred the traditional ... dark soy sauce with garlic chili and ginger... (Singaporean/ Malaysian) way.... but probably to each their own. The fried version was also moist and crunchy. Probably the sweet and sour would be the best bet for this.... The chicken rice was somewhat just okay. I don't know if it's the texture but I just didn't like it. The free broth though was pretty light and good. Overall, this dish is still a win. Another dish i tried was the Panang curry. Once you order, you're given the option for meat... i went for the shrimp.... The dish came in a bowl and a side of white rice... the sauce was thick and the flavor spot on. I couldn't handle the heat because of my condition, but I was happy to say that this was really flavorful... I realize that I should have ordered this dish with the optional add-on of fried chicken. Just because, the added medium sized shrimps in the dish were probably around just 5-6 pieces. In anycase, since I did went on a busy hour... the serving time was within range. I think i waited probably 20 mins for the first dish to be served (curry) then another 10-15 for the chicken. Price wise, i paid around 34 dollars plus tip. It was an okay meal. Will i go back? My friends and I did a family style here and got 4 dishes to spilt amongst each other, and I definitely recommend doing a family style over just one dish for everyone. The fried chicken is just so good, with the tender meat and extremely crispy breading along with a nice and savory curry was just yum. I had a very disappointing experience at Luk Gai. I ordered the boat noodles specifically with no bean sprouts, but when the dish came out, the noodles were soggy and still had bean sprouts in them. When I pointed this out, instead of allowing me to switch to another menu item, I was told that they couldn't do that and was only offered 15% off. That felt dismissive, especially since the mistake was not on my end. also noticed after the fact that the prices on the receipt did not match the menu prices. I was charged $21.45 for Boat Noodles and $16.95 for the Duo Mighty Chicken, which is not what was listed on the menu. That is extremely concerning and misleading to customers. Between the incorrect order, exchange the dish and now questionable pricing, this experience was unacceptable. As someone who is Thai, I was really looking forward to authentic flavors and better attention to detail, but this experience fell far short. Service was impeccable. There was only one person working, but he was extremely attentive and friendly. We ordered the coconut shrimp, the small combo chicken light, and two different spice levels of Panang curry (my friends really wanted curry). We also had Thai tea and lemonade. The coconut shrimp were solid. As a fried chicken fan, I thought I'd love the chicken combo, but I didn't. The fried chicken was just okay--the batter kept falling off, so it felt like I was eating chicken and fried bits separately. The poached chicken was dry and bland; I wouldn't recommend it. That said, the ginger rice was delicious. The Panang curry was a bit runnier than I prefer and didn't really stand out flavor-wise, but the portions were generous. The drinks were a bit too sweet for my taste, but if you enjoy sweet drinks, they'll probably hit the spot. read more

Consider yourself fortunate if you dine at Luck Gai Cafe! Setting: Cute fox-themed decorations with cool wood furniture. Though the inside is not huge (maybe 8 to 10 small tables), there is additional outdoor seating. Note: The restaurant is not visible from the street. It's tucked away at the end of a weird-shaped strip mall beside some train tracks. GPS will be your friend. Food: We ordered the Hainan chicken combo and the khao soi. My wife got the latter dish, a yellow curry coconut noodle soup. It's not too common in most Thai restaurants in the USA, so we haven't had it a ton. But the Luck Gai Cafe version was fantastic. It was not quite a soup but not really a dry noodle -- a sort of wet, creamy in-between -- and totally worth it. I was hesitant to get the Hainan chicken because my grandfather was from Hainan and I grew up eating his amazing Hainanese chicken and rice dish (hard to beat homemade!). But since this was a signature dish, I had to try it to compare. So glad I did! Obviously this is the Thai interpretation, so it didn't quite taste the same, but it was still yummy in its own right. I got the combo, which has both the fried chicken (nice crispy Asian batter) and the poached chicken (tender and juicy). The only knock against it was that the rice was a little bland -- authentic Hainanese rice packs a punch of garlic, ginger, and chicken broth. Still, I enjoyed the whole combo. Service: This is probably the best part of Luck Gai Cafe. The staff here is so attentive and efficient. Plus they're so kind and friendly -- as an Asian growing up eating at Asian restaurants, I know that's a rarity. Overall: Aside from some minor quibbles, I thoroughly enjoyed my time and food at Luck Gai Cafe. While my true rating is 4.5 out of 5, since I can't give half stars, I'm happy to round up to 5 out of 5. I'm looking forward to returning. read more
