If you're looking for a quick and affordable place to get lunch, Matt's is the place with their ~$5ish hot dogs and burgers all under $10. There's a good variety of dogs from your local favourites like the Seattle Dogs, to their Famous Chili Dogs. The space is quite small, there's a few bar stool tables to sit at, but you'd have a better time eating outside at one of the benches. Other than that, service is quick pace and no-frills. The hot dog I ordered was satisfying, has a nice snap like how they describe it, and honestly I whiffed up that hot dog pretty quickly, honestly could've eaten two. But instead I wanted to try out a burger as well which satisfied my hunger. It's a good burger, a little too much lettuce for me though. The only thing I didn't like was the fries that I got, they felt a little stale, so I could. have done without it. TLDR: Great dogs, good burgers, could've been better fries. This is place is a staple. Been there since the '90s and May is still there as well. Great little piece of Seattle history. Not a lot of hot dog centered restaurants or joints around here so when I discovered it I knew I had to check it out. It's in the hat I call the industrial area outside the city but still within the city type. It's on a corner next to tracks and obscurity. I wanted to try a few things so I already had in mind my order but I still took my time and perused the spot before sauntering up the stoop. It has a quaint little outdoor square so to speak with benches and wood countertops yo eat and that's where I decided to set myself once I had my food. I went inside and saw men in the kitchen and running the counter and shortly after Mike, the man hisself came in with a classic PNW grin and smile. I ordered the NY dog, the Seattle dog and the Chicago. Large coke and a side of cheese fries. I wanted to lay card but the system was down and luckily I just so happened to have cash, which I rarely do or if I do it's for emergencies only. Well the silent alarm went off and I humbly pulled out my bill and paid due. After a bit of short time my food was ready and I stepped out into the outdoor space and took my spot and ate. My food was hit and looked good. The coke was nice and cold and I dug right in. The first so was the Seattle. Cream cheese and grilled onions. A good dog. I'm not sure why Seattle settled on those toppings but I'm not completely. It was savory and a little sweet from the onions. Creamy and a good blend of texture and bite. The next was the NY dog. It had sauerkraut, classic tomato sauce and mustard. It was good. Now I've never been to New York but I've had the original Sabrettes tomato condiment and it's more vinegary than Mikes version but still a good dog. Last but my favorite whenever and wherever I see it on the menu was the Chicago dog. Classic. Sport pepper. Tomatoes slices. Pickle. Sport relish. Onion. Mustard and even celery seed. The only difference was the missing poppyseed bun but it was still a great dog. After I downed the kennel I ate the cheese fries. Good excellent crisp and salty. Creamy but not too gooey cheese sauces. Are there better versions of this? Yes but it paired well with the dogs that I forgot to mention had a great snap and bite. The chew of everything was immaculate. But the fires wet a good side dish. I definitely recommend this place for not just a great dog but for history and nostalgia plus you get to might get to see the legend himself, Mike. read more

8/12/2025 Went to Matt's Hot Dogs for the first time on a recent work trip to Seattle. I was starving and someone at the airport told me they had really good hot dogs, so I gave it a try. The place is basically a small wooden shack with a little covered patio outside. They have a variety of options -- chili dogs, kraut dogs, Chicago dogs -- plus hamburgers and a selection of french fries. I ordered the Chicago dog ($6.89), which came with peppers, mustard, onions, green relish, and celery salt. It was... okay. The bun was just a plain hot dog bun, no poppy seeds or anything special. I've had better -- in fact, Mustard's in Los Alamitos, CA makes a Chicago dog that blows this one away, and I gave them 5 stars. It wasn't terrible, just nothing to go out of your way for. If you're nearby and in the mood for a hot dog, it's worth a stop. But based on my experience, I wouldn't make a special trip. read more

A couple of months ago, I made chili at home based purely on vibes in that I assumed that throwing ground beef with spices, aromatics, some tomatoes, beans, and stock would result in some kind of chili. On paper, this is probably true. In execution, I made unexceptional chili that was rather flavorless and overall disappointing and not representative of my self-determined culinary ability. Eating a chili dog at my famous chili dogs gave me a glimpse at an alternate reality where my love for hot dogs and my inability to make a good chili manifested in a physical establishment. I was not a fan of my chili dog because I couldn't distinguish the chili from the dog and it reminded me painfully of my own mediocrity. That said, my chicago dog was excellent and very much a faithful representation of my history with chicago dogs. So overall, I nailed it where it mattered. The dogs are really the highlight of my famous chili dogs while the chili leaves much to be desired. I would definitely come back again to eat my non-chili dogs and try one of my unmentioned burgers. I am a bit of a hotdog snob, but Matt's are really quite good. Absolutely up there with the best dogs I've found in Seattle. (I still believe there are no 5-star hot dog joints in this city, so 4 is high praise.) While a lover of dogs, the chili version has never been my favorite, but it's in the name for godsakes so obviously I had to try one. Luckily I was a hungry boy and also had room to order a Chicago dog, hold the relish. Also fries. The dogs are muy bueno - a massive green flag is the natural casing, and telltale snap that comes with it. This is how a dog should feel and sound when bitten into. I do wish they were spiced a bit more, but they're quite tasty. The chili I found underwhelming...don't get me wrong, it was good, I downed it fast and licked my fingers afterward, it was just a little generic, and I would trade a bit of sweetness for a few more dashes of seasoning if I could have it my way. The Chicago dog was money. My only qualm is that it just had one sport pepper...easy fix, I'll order extra next time. The buns were steamed soft, not toasted, as they should be. I prefer a poppy bun myself but that's a matter of much debate and I won't force my views on the world. I found the fries, despite claims on the menu, not to be worthy of a marriage proposal. They were decent, but not amazing, and I just couldn't see myself spending the rest of my life with them. I ordered a Polish Sausage, Seattle Style, great flavor, heated bun. And the Chili Fries delivered the flavor as well. The Polish may have been steamed but it still delivered. You can get a chili dog in a lot of places. This is the only place where I have had a truly great chili cheese dog! Really friendly service, and of course you have to try the chili dog here. It's got almost a cafeteria style to it that brings back nostalgia, but at a high quality twist. I ended up getting the chili + slaw - both chili and slaw have that cafeteria quality, where the chili is more a stew of ground meat with a mild amount of spice, and the slaw is your standard fare. Eh, have to reduce this by two stars. The service (as always) is great, but when I asked for cheese to be added to a hot dog I almost passed out when I saw I was charged $1.39. Should it be free? My office in Georgetown orders from Matt's more than we may want to admit. It's definitely a favorite. I like that there is something for everyone. I can get my slaw dog with no bun and still feel like I had enough to eat and that it was good. Some of us can get the veggie dog with their dog of choice. My other favorite is the Chicago dog. Everything is always tasty. It is always quick (we pick up), and if you're feeling something extra their fries or a burger are also fan faves. Nice people, good product, local shop. Was really excited to try this place because of the ratings and reviews, however the food was average and left me wanting. Ordered the chili dog, double chili burger, chili cheese fries, a southern dog, and a strawberry shake. The chili was mediocre and was missing that wow factor. The hot dogs also tasted very average. The combo of the 2 reminded me of a chili dog I'd get at a high school football game. The shake also tasted superficial. To compare, the hot dogs at Costco are better and the shakes at Shake Shack beat this place out of the park. I give it 3 stars though because it's a local business and the owner obviously takes pride in his shop since he gets to know his customers.
