This was my first time dining at Butcher & Barrel and I have to say upon entering the ambience was so relaxing and elegant . The hostess was very sweet and sat us at our table right away. Our server was amazing and very attentive. We didn't feel rushed at all and gave us enough time to eat our appetizers and meals. The food was absolutely delicious. We ordered for an appetizer the house made focaccia bread and was hot, well seasoned and so fresh. I felt as if it just came out of the oven. The French onion soup was excellent, flavor was on point and soup was hot. The boneless beef braised short rib entree was incredible. I literally licked my plate clean. We did order the bread pudding Togo to eat later since we were so full but didn't care much for it which is a bummer. It was a little dry to me and lacked flavor. Alright. I hate this, but here we are. This wasn't a bad night, but there were bad moments. I hope the REAL manager reads, because the food and Yaya deserve praise, while the management issues need attention. Ryan was the manager on duty. He seemed either very new, in training, or simply not suited to the role. Our server, Yaya (I believe), was wonderful: bubbly, knowledgeable, transparent when she needed to find an answer, and genuinely attentive. Unfortunately, the overall service was slow, and that was clearly not all on her. The support staff weren't pulling their weight. The food runner seemed nervous and didn't offer basic follow-up, and Ryan wasn't observant of what was happening on the floor. The biggest issue came later. Our server cleared our appetizer plates and silverware, then our steaks arrived with NO SILVERWARE. We sat looking around trying to catch someone's attention while our server was taking another order. Eventually she noticed and brought it over. This should be a team effort, not something the server has to catch after food is sitting down. When I ordered my second drink, I watched the bartender type, voice-text, send a message, and THEN start making it. Phones shouldn't be openly used during dinner service. I understand staff may need to keep phones nearby for emergencies, but being visibly on one during service is very different. At dessert, my mom calmly tried to give constructive feedback about the lack of silverware and general attentiveness. We repeatedly praised Yaya and the food. Instead of listening, Ryan became defensive and started a blame carousel. He told us, "Well, we have other tables that are really happy," which is an inappropriate response to customer feedback. He also pointed to checking on us about dessert as evidence that he was attentive. Complimentary dessert is great, but it doesn't address the actual service issue. A good manager should be on the floor helping: running drinks, clearing plates, noticing missing silverware, and supporting the team. We felt like we were endlessly repeating ourselves and going back to square one. Ryan needs to learn to absorb constructive criticism rather than making guests feel like the problem. Rich, crispy, and perfectly balanced by the pickled cucumbers and carrots. * B&B Mac & Cheese -- creamy, great cheese crust, and fun noodles. Only question: the menu listed garlic breadcrumbs, but we didn't taste/notice them. Me: * 2 Lemon Drops -- nothing wild or inventive, but honestly, a very good Lemon Drop. * Ribeye Special -- perfect medium rare, rich/salty demi-glace, heavenly mashed potatoes with roasted garlic, and seasonal vegetables. The green beans and carrots were good; the squash was too soft and felt unnecessary. * Crème Brûlée -- excellent. Strawberries added acidity, the sugar top was perfectly crisp, and the custard had lovely vanilla notes. Mom: * Rosé & Espresso Martini -- she raved about the martini. She is VERY honest about espresso martinis, so the fact that she loved it means something. * French Onion Soup -- classic and delicious with soft onions, salty broth, and excellent cheese. We ordered the tomahawk steak, expecting it to be the highlight of the meal, but it was a huge letdown--especially considering it cost around $200. We came here for our anniversary dinner and everything was great! Staff were super friendly. They made us a super cute anniversary sign for our table too, which was very sweet. Our waitress, Kaytlin, was great. She was nice and attentive. The restaurant is chic and romantic. Other than it being on the louder side, the decor is warm with more dim lighting. What I also noticed and really appreciated is that the tables were spacious and placed farther apart from each other, so you're not crammed with other people. My only complaint is location is on K St, which is hard to find parking and there is no valet. The food was great (details below) and we definitely plan to be back. We made reservations at Butcher and Barrel for my husband's birthday, and thankfully they were able to get us in on a Saturday at 7:30pm. The location is a little tucked away on K St close to DoCo, but we were still able to find street parking. The atmosphere is more casual than I typically expect for a steak house, so I was completely blown away when the quality of the food and drinks were on par with some of the best steakhouses I've ever been to! We had heard good things, but they exceeded expectations! The short rib croquets we ordered for appetizers were hearty and delicious. We also had the Cesar salad which was good. My mother-in-law and I ordered separate entrees - the lamb lollipops and the braised short rib. Of course, the star of the show was the 50 oz. Tomahawk Wagyu steak that my husband split with his sister and her husband. The menu says feeds two, but it fed three easily. It could probably stretch even further if you order the right sides. I got to taste it, and it was the highlight of the dinner. Tender, flavorful, and delicious! I definitely think we'll be back for future special occasions. We ordered the coconut shrimp for appetizers. They were OK. He got the New York and it was not edible. It was very fatty and there were pieces you couldn't even chew. I got the filet mignon. It was good, but it was over cooked. I asked for medium well and they didn't have Oscar style, which I did see on the menu online , but I guess they just updated their menu so it wasn't there so that was kind of a bummer because I really wanted Oscar style steak. Absolutely fell in love with this steakhouse. I came here with a couple friends for a nice dinner and was absolutely blown away. First the atmosphere is incredible dim lights, colorful it feels like an amazing fine dining experience. We tried out a couple of the menu items and none of them disappointed. The oysters were so fresh buttery, and that hint of lemon really sealed it all. The steaks were beautifully cooked, a perfect medium rare so Juicery it was just melt in your mouth. Goodness, I found to be perfectly seasoned. The drinks were also a whole experience. They were colorful, so beautiful to look at and tasted perfectly. Went here for my birthday dinner. Food was good. Server was great. Floor manager in training should find other work. A few hiccups were had that were honestly nothing to write home about but when these concerns were voiced to the floor manager they were met with a stonewall. Took zero accountability and attempted to shift blame onto other employees. To add insult to injury said floor managers attire was unprofessional and not representative of the class that this establishment is striving to represent. We had to clarify our gripes to our server as they were reprimanded by the floor manager when that was not issue at hand. Overall I'd recommend this place but I wouldn't recommend butcher and barrel to hire Ryan. Went here for the second year in a row for their dine downtown menu. This was my top/most favorite place I tried last year and this year is still the same. We were recommended to make reservations for lunch so I did on a Thursday. It was not busy when we got here for lunch, so it was great. The place looks huge when it's empty and it was nice and quiet for lunch. My coworkers and I all opted for the DD menu. We all got the steak bites appetizers to start, and they got the steak entree while I did butter chicken for variety and so we can all try the full menu. I preferred the steak over the chicken, but the chicken was not bad at all. In fact, it was really juicy and moist, but the steak had more flavor. For dessert, I got the orange Pana Cotta and the coworker got the bread pudding. Both were really good, but I liked the Panna Cotta more. Our server was great and attentive as well. Although there isn't a huge selection if food or drinks we had the sliders $12 a Nitty's Cider $5 and house wine $7. They were out of house wine so we had Doua which I s normally $15 per glass. Our bartender was friendly and informative. We moved to our table for dinner where Daniel provided excellent service. Firstly we had a reservation for 8:15 and unfortunately i was the only person on time, the rest of my party strolled in about 20-30 minutes after me but the host and waitress were all so accommodating and did not have any issue with that at all! She Explained the menu & the questions that we had (which were a lot haha) & never seemed annoyed or bothered. It was about a party of six of us and everyone said she was such a good waitress.. we ordered a little bit of everything we got a steak. A margarita. We had some fries, the spinach dip, I got a tequila flight with additive free tequila. I did want to mention that they carry a lot of additive free alcohol, which I definitely appreciated. Wr also got a salmon plate with mashed potatoes on the side. My grandma was even able to get some hot tea. My dad who is a steak connoisseur said this was one of the best steaks he had in Sacramento. It was seasoned so well and cooked perfectly exactly how he asked, which was medium rare the salmon was just as good, It was flavored so perfectly. It tasted like it just came out of a home cooked kitchen. The chef actually ended up coming from the back and shaking all of our hands and thanking us for dining he also sent out a plate of focaccia bread with mushrooms and some type of gravy sauce on top, which was so divine. The whole staff at Butcher and barrel were so welcoming and nice so I just wanna say good job on that when you can dine somewhere and the food and the service is top-tier that's a place you will go back again. Also, I love the vibe of the place. It gives a really cute laid-back type of ambience, but goes along with where they have the restaurant placed in downtown Sacramento. I feel like the prices were on par with what you will find at this level of a restaurant for everything that we got. There was 6 of us which included alcohol the bill came out to $530 plus tip so we ended up spending around 600 and something dollars total and everyone was happy with that. It's very large inside with 2 full bars and plenty of seating. I could see groups of friends coming in after a game and having some food and drinks. We ordered the fried burrata with focaccia. It was nicely done and the sauce on the plate for dipping was delicious ! It had a hint of spice ( chili oil). The dry aged ribeye was incredibly delicious and cooked perfectly medium rare! We had caviar and ceviche for starters and both of those were great! I will say that the caviar came with potato chips instead of crackers which I liked but they should really make sure the chips they include are all actually useable for the caviar and the condiments that go with the caviar. Many of the chips were too small to actually use but the caviar was delicious, I'd of happily just eaten it off the spoon Our sides were creamed spinach which I was disappointed with because it had Parmesan cheese on top and I don't like Parmesan cheese! We also had fries that I believe were cooked in beef tallow which I'm not a fan of but ate most of them anyway and our last side was a medley of roasted veggie's which was pretty straight forward and tasty. My steak was unevenly cooked, which is a fundamental failure for any restaurant worth its salt. The plates were poor quality with a bizarre texture, making it nearly impossible to cut cleanly. The staff were friendly enough, but disengaged going through the motions rather than actually hosting. Then there's the wine list. Stocking $1,900 a bottle wines is a vanity exercise that serves almost no one. That shelf space would do far more work stocked with exceptional wines at accessible price points -- you'd sell more, satisfy more guests, and stop leaving people frustrated with the single, limited option available by the glass. My server made sure my bone marrow had a lot of marrow since my second order that came in was just mostly the bone. My business partner and I celebrated our 12 years on 4/1 at Butcher and Barrel. Kendra took care of us and we got to Meet the owner...Kevin:) We started with a filet sliced for an appetizer and it was perfection. Then came the star of the show...the tomahawk. Oh my!!!! Cooked perfectly and all the sauces were amazing(on the side). Kevin was a great host and spent the right amount of time telling us about his passion for serving people, Sacramento, and family:)!! French fries were perfectly crisp and amazing. Asparagus and shrooms were perfectly cooked and seasoned. The bar had one of the best whisky selections around! Truly a treat and worth it!!! Great atmosphere and service! We booked this restaurant for a date night and it was a wonderful experience. We were greeted with a cute sign that said "date night done right", treated with complimentary bites of their bread with cherry compote and had a wonderful waitress (blonde, can't remember her name, but she was great). The manager was incredibly patronizing and rude. Acted like a complete snob on a little guy (I'm a girl and he's like my height) power trip, really seemed to get off on talking down to staff. I assume he was recently promoted to management and this is the first taste of power he's had in his life before. I have nothing but bad things to say about this restaurant to everybody I know.
