The food was good here, but I cannot recommend this place in 2021 due to their lack of social distancing between tables. Things started off well in terms of Covid precautions: they checked my temperature and asked for my name and phone number for contact tracing. However, they have placed the tables really close to each other, and are seating people at every table. The first two times they seated someone next to me, there were other tables available with proper distancing, and the people asked to be moved. The third time there was not another table, so I had a party of 4 people seated right next to me. I had the Tropicana salad and a side of arepas. The salad was good. The arepas were not what I was expecting, they said they were with cheese. The cheese was just on top of it and it wasn't even melted. It fell off when I tried to pick it up. I also had a mango daiquiri, and that was good, though I am not sure that it had much alcohol in it. Overall I don't think I will be returning, because it did not feel safe. read more

The food was good, but not great for the prices. The drinks were okay. This review is mostly because the restaurant didn't have AC on 95 degree weather. I was sweating just sitting down. We couldn't wait to leave because of how hot it was. My face was sweaty, my back was drenched in sweat. Poor employees I can only imagine what's going on in the kitchen. This place is amazing! I went here for the first time and I am so sad it was my first. I live out of town now but whenever I come home I will be going there. Paid parking was on the street and limited so if you can, Uber/Lyft or MTA is recommended. The resturant is very nice and cozy. We were greeted by a very nice hostess and was seated promptly. It was around 1pm that we arrived on a Friday so I think we beat the crowd. The waiter was also super nice and ran down the specials of the day and everything sounded a amazing. We all decided to choose from the lunch menu and were not disappointed. To start we has the shrimp, beef and chicken Tostones with plantain chips- Amazing!! We also ordered a pitcher of the white sangria which was also amazing. Now to the food! I ordered the Coco Cabana Vegetables with yellow rice in a coconut sauce, black beans and salad. It was so good I wanted to cry lol. My other friends had the chicken soup and they said it was great also but a touch on the salty side. They also loved their meals. The food is always amazing here. The first night of indoor dining again For my family and I, and I am so happy we chose Cabanas. The wait is always a hassle, but worth every minute. We ordered the Mar y Tierra (steak and shrimp) platter which is accompanied by sweet plantains and we also ordered one with tostones or fried green plantains. The rice and beans were phenomenal, like always. Everything is always cooked to perfection! And I recommend asking for sides of ají (garlic butter) chimichurri sauce and red wine vinegrette. Stopped by this place before a concert and the food was really good. I only have one major qualm- the service (but we will get to that later)! My friend and I came in on a Tuesday around 3 and there were people around so figured it must be good. For drinks (because why not) my friend got a margarita and I got the electric ice tea. Now what is the electric ice tea? Apparently it's gin, tequila, vodka, white rum, blue curacao, and sour mix- i.e. my type of drink. There was no dearth of alcohol in either drink and I think one drink is more than suffice for a reasonable buzz (or maybe I'm just a lightweight)! All cocktails are priced reasonably at $12 as well. For food- as the lunch menu ended at 4 PM, we ordered off of that. Note that albeit some places skimp on food for the lunch portions, this place is most definitely not that. The portions for both of us were giant and more than adequate. We respectively ordered the empanadas and pollo empanizado sandwich. My friend enjoyed her shrimp criollo empanadas- two of them are served and come with rice and beans. As for my sandwich, I can't complain about it except for the bread which was lackluster. In their defense, what's inside a sandwich is what really makes or breaks it. There was more than enough of chicken, black beans, and surprisingly avocados as well. I couldn't finish all of it so I ended up taking half of it home (yes, the portions, at least for the sandwiches, really are that huge)! The food was reasonably priced as well at a little under $15 per entree (off the lunch menu that is). So, going back to the reason why I gave four stars and not five- the service. I hate to admit it but it was super spotty and slow. It's not like the place was packed that it should've taken a ridiculously long time which unfortunately it did. For our drinks it took about twenty five minutes and for the food at least forty. I'm not a chef but I have a gut feeling it shouldn't take that long...on top of that asking for the check and waiting for them to pick up the check also took much longer than it should've. Why? The vibe, the service and of course the food is a perfect dance of cuisine artistry! For a restaurant that has been in the Forest Hills neighborhood for as long as I can remember, Cabana still has it. Cabana, which is part of a small chain of Cuban restaurants, serves pretty typical Cuban fare - rice, beans, pulled pork, variations of chicken, etc. There's nothing on the menu that will really surprise you if you've been to a Cuban restaurant. However, what will get your fanny back here, is the tremendous flavors and service. I came here for a Saturday afternoon birthday luncheon for my mother and everything went as well as it could have possibly went. We arrived for a 12pm reservation and, as we soon learned, we really didn't need a reservation. Since it was still early, the restaurant was pretty quiet and only had a few parties dining there. By the end of our meal at 1:20ish, there were a few more tables occupied, but overall, there was still plenty of open space, so no worries about it being overly crowded. We were promptly seated for a table of 3 inside. Throughout the meal, the service we were given was excellent. The waitress waiting our table was very friendly from start to finish. Since it was lunchtime, we were given the opportunity to order from the lunch menu and we definitely did not pass up on that. The 13 entress and sandwiches listed on the lunch menu were significantly less expensive (approximately $10 less) than the regular dinner menu. There were also great items to choose from on the lunch menu too. I ended up with the Churrasco, my wife ordered the Tangerine salad (from the regular menu) and my mother ordered the Polla A La Parilla. We also threw in a Ceviche Mixto appetizer as well. Here's some quick thoughts on them all: CEVICHE MIXTO There was a lot of seafood in this appetizer - shrimp, octopus, scallops and calamari marinated really well. The seafood was fresh and tasty, but it didn't hurt that we were starving too. Our only complaint would have been it was a bit too watery for our liking. We were expecting the dish to not be so moist. TANGERINE ENTREE SALAD This was my wife's entree and she loved it. First of all, the salad was massive. There was so much mango-melon salsa sprinkled around the greens and the pieces of Atlantic salmon were huge and thick. She was expecting a decent size salad, but the amount of salmon was a surprise. On top of it, the flavors of everything were excellent. CHURRASCO I love me some steak and Cabana makes a mean skirt steak. The entree came with a side of rice and beans and those spoke for themselves. Nothing mind-blowing, but tasty. The Churrasco was served on a skillet, so it was kept nice and warm. The steak was thin, tender and very easy to cut through. The garlic and fresh herbs really gave it a ton of flavor and the chimichurri sauce was what the doctor ordered. I couldn't have asked for a better cooked or better tasting skirt steak. POLLO A LA PARILLA Whenever you see chicken breast on the menu, it's very easy to dismiss it because the stereotype is that it's typically dry. Wrong. The chicken breast in this entree was so juicy and tender. I don't know how they did it, but the fact that it was grilled probably had something to do with it. It almost reminded me of a perfectly grilled no bone pork chop. The piece of grilled chicken was pretty big, so my mother gave me a huge portion and, if I had more stomach space, I easily could have devoured a lot more of it. Lastly, to top off our fantastic lunch here, we secretly requested for a Tres Leches cake with a candle in it. Not only did the staff deliver on it, but they sang Happy Birthday to my mother. The joy on her face was priceless. I can't say enough about the staff's service and to have food that was so wonderfully cooked, but simple, made for a near perfect meal here. This was my second visit to Cabana in Forest Hills. The first was pre COVID, my second was a few days ago. All COVID protocols are being followed including distance, masks for staff and contact tracing. The food for both my visits was very good. Meals were served hot, seasoned well and nicely presented. The staff was attentive and friendly. There can be a long wait for this restaurant as I think it is a cut above its neighborhood competitors. If you do not visit off hours, you can expect to wait of 45 - 90 min. If do go off hours then you can usually get seated immediately. That has been my experience and what I heard from others. I can highly recommend this local spot if you are in Forest Hills for its food as well as its drinks. One thing to take note of, this area is difficult to find parking at, please come early or by other means. Parking is very difficult in the Austin Street area over all. read more

Our waitress was really kind and friendly but the food was ... just okay. I think Cabana really excels with the meats, as evidenced by my boyfriend's rojo vieja (shredded skirt steak on top of rice and beans), but my friend's octopus salad and my veggie curry was a little above mediocre. Maybe we should have stuck with the ceviche or the yucca fries. I was battling a toothache and wanted something relatively soft and stewed down. The coco cabana vegetables sounded delicious: broccoli, red potatoes, green peas, spinach, carrots, snap peas and caribbean root vegetable (yuca, calabaza, and yautia). Yum? Only the dish was about 90% potato and the snap peas were a sad stringy version of their formerly green selves. My friend's octopus salad was the real let-down. Some of the salad combinations sounded a bit nutty for me (seafood and tangerines and pineapple?) but we figured the octopus salad was a solid choice. It turns out that octopus and olives aren't exactly a winning combination. The base was also lettuce (a.k.a. the most mediocre and nutritionally deficient of all salad greens) in enormous pieces, while the octopus tasted so oddly chewy we suspected it of being canned. The salad was literally large lettuce pieces, octopus, and olives strewn about. I felt a bit bad for my friend. I think the skirt steak and the paella would've been safer choices or the less healthy but tastier appetizers like empanadas or tostones. The online menu is also a bit different; for instance, I picked here specifically because I thought there was a cubano offered on the menu but I guess they don't offer it for lunch on weekends. I waited for over an hour in the rain for a seat at this restaurant. And let me tell you it was worth the wait. Diego was my server and he was super friendly and kind. A lot of people were waiting and had nasty attitudes, but he remained professional and courteous regardless. I went to a restaurant down the street and had the complete opposite experience with management and servers, so I really appreciated his professional attitude. The skirt steak was delicious. It was a very big size And was cooked to perfection. I also had a salad and the Jamaican wings. Everything was delicious and served quickly. The sangria was also to die for. The food is delicious and the drinks were great. I'll start off by saying this is an amazing restaurant. The food is incredible, featuring an array of flavors and ingredients to create delicious and interesting meals. Prices are reasonable and portions are generous. But one of the best things about this restaurant is the atmosphere. I decided to come here cause i was very disappointed with Rincon Criollo so i decided to come here and eat some good Cuban thats not generic. For the table my party ordered the garlic grilled chicken, ropa vieja, grilled salmon, skirt steak, and for a appetizer i had a go with the jerk wings. When i tell you for a chain resteraunt i love this place due to the flavor and different variety of great dishes to choose from. PROS Awesome food and great drinks. Great staff and great vibes. CONS This place is very small. Getting a table can be a headache and a wait especially on weekends. I use to go to the south street sea port location but that one closed down to due to hurricane sandy. Great food, great service and all around solid Cuban resteraunt i enjoyed for years. I've always loved coming here for my Cuban cuisine fix! I've been coming here for about 15 years with family and on dates. Most recently I came on date night with my husband. I hadn't been here in about 10 years and my husband had never been here. We waited at the bar for about 15minutes for a table which is fine. I had a caipirinha and it was perfect! Soon after we were seated and we ordered the tostones appetizer which came with shrimp, beef, and chicken. They were to die for! For our entree, I ordered a plate that came with chicken breasts, tostones, and shrimp accompanied by rice and an amazing garlic sauce. I loved it. It did happen to be a lot of food so we took some home. My husband ordered the parrilla for 1. All types of meat on a grill with rice and beans. Soooooo much amazing food! Their flavor, their presentation gets an A+ from us! Their service can use a little upgrade since there was a little misunderstanding with the waitress and our bill but it was handled quickly.
