Great place for a quiet, upscale dinner in the Fredericksburg area. We made reservations a few weeks in advance of an anniversary trip. There was a "happy anniversary" card on the table from the staff when we arrived. Our server, Megan, did an excellent job suggesting food items and some bubbly (Alexander Vineyards) for our meals. Great atmosphere, great service and wait staff but the food was not up to expectations. We saw the chicken fried ribeye on the Texas Bucket List and placed it on our list. To celebrate my 65th bday we set a reservation for 8pm and we're greeted upon entering and given a bday card from the grill team. Our waitstaff Richard took over and was great in assisting with our questions. We started with the fried olives and I had the house salad with lime vinaigrette. I also added in the Texas hill country pecans which really set the salad off. Great taste. Next we both ordered the well anticipated chicken fried ribeye and we both had the Yukon gold mashed potatoes. No complaints on the lump lobster sauce but from there it went downhill. The ribeye had too much salt so I can safely say I'm getting good use from my blood pressure medicine. And the potatoes were very bland. Not what I'm used to with Yukon gold mashed. It tasted like a broth may have been used and not milk when mashing. I wish we'd have selected two different entrées so we could have shared. As it was neither of us finished the meals. This was the most absolute worst dining experience of my life. My wife and I got stuck in the corner on a two top we asked to move to a four top and the waiter told us it was reserved for someone else that table sat empty until we left the restaurant. I asked our waiter for additional dressing for my salad and he brought a thimble full we asked for bread with our salads but didn't know it would be a $5 dollar additional charge. Both of our steaks were undercooked so they took them back to the kitchen to prepare correctly and when they return they brought us the same side of asparagus which was cold that they served originally. Just a little off the main drag but worth it!!!! This is the second time we have been here on a trip. We sought this place out after our last trip a few years ago and we remembered it being amazing, it didn't disappoint again. We had the spinach and pecan salad (I think it had grapefruit in it but didn't need it) YUM! I had the filet and he had the chicken fried ribeye topped with lobster with cheese grits. He ate every bite, I have no idea how and said it was amazing and would be a crime not to finish. Oh and the wine selection is great as is the service! This place is amazing! Love this place. We take an annual trip to Fredericksburg, and this is our go-to dinner location. The food is always fresh and each item from the appetizer to dessert tastes amazing. Excellent steaks Our server, Brittany, was ON IT. She didn't miss a beat, whether it was refilling our drinks, informing us of favorites and specials, attentive (but not overly attentive), and made us laugh. Wonderful place to relax. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is from our initial experience after being seated. We waited 10 minutes and never had any waitstaff come to our table to take a drink or appetizer order. My husband had to get up to go ask if we have a server. We were frustrated and almost left. Bad first impression. But our waiter showed up shortly thereafter and he was great! He apologized for the wait. The food was awesome! The quail was superb! The other issue we encountered is they messed up our order. I asked for mashed potatoes as my entree side and we ordered a larger extra side of grits. They brought out grits for my entree side and no potatoes. We had to ask about them and then they brought those out for our additional side instead. Not a big deal but for a restaurant that Is top 10 in the nation, was very surprised for these 2 events that happened to us. I thought it was odd that you have a reservation more than a month prior and you mention outdoor seating as a preference but when we got there and asked about it, they said that is for walk-ins only and there is a wait so we would have to get in behind the walk-ins. The grounds around the property are beautiful! We arrived to dinner a little early so we decided to walk around. The areas was very clean and peaceful to watch the koi pond. Once inside for dinner we had for starters the warm goat cheese. Man oh man was that good! Definitely a go to when we return. My husband and I have been to Cabernet Grill many times but it had been years since our last visit. We have always loved their food and this time didn't disappoint! My husband ordered the tejas mixed grill and I ordered the seared red snapper with crab on top! We also ordered the jumbo lump crab gratin as an appetizer and the corn as a side to share based on reviews. It was ALL delicious and no complaints about the food!! My only complaint was the cocktail. I ordered a martini and it came to the table just barely cool and I KNOW martinis are suppose to be served ice cold! Was not good!!! Well, after seeing some of the good reviews online we decided to give this place a try. Huge mistake! The old saying,"don't believe everything you read", is true. Our family, children and spouses plus one three year old granddaughter all decided to tour Fredericksburg during the Labor Day Holiday. I called to make reservations about a week in advance for a table of eight and talked to Dixie (I now believe that was a fake name used because of the dumbfounded looks I received when I asked if she was there.) Dixie was as friendly as her southern name until I mentioned we also had a toddler. Whoa! Game changer or should I say dinner reservation changer. All of a sudden the table for eight seemed to be in question now. Dixie promptly put me on hold. Upon Dixie's return to the other end of the phone line, I was informed that they only had tables for parties of four left and that there was no guarantee we could sit together. I asked Dixie could we not just put two tables together? I was told NO! All the tables are reserved .But, there was a but, I could have a table for eight if I came on Sunday. I declined and kept the Saturday night reservations for two parties of four plus one toddler( also each table reservation was under a different name) because we had a planned itinerary. Upon our five o'clock arrival at Cabernet Grill they were all smiles until we gave our name. Then It was like we were all prisoners in a bad fairy tale were the Wicked Ice Queen makes all the rules, and anyone who dares to question her will be sent to the ice caves to work hard labor in shorts and tank top till you freeze to death. Yep, should have left right then. They seated us at a table of their choosing for four. On each side of our table were two more tables for four each. We asked if we could just at least have the other four family members plus toddler sit close to us. NO! Said the Wicked Ice Queen. Those tables have been requested so they are reserved. I am so sure someone called in and said, "Could we have the table on either side of the fireplace," but whatever we said,"okay". The whole entire meal was uncomfortable because they kept looking at us from the front desk and talking. I know they could have been talking about something so innocent but come on this was the Wicked Ice Queen. At this time we were just about the only customers in the dining room. Then a table of six came in and were seated right in front of us. Then one of the reserved tables (as we were told) was seated with two diners.We ordered our appetizers and meal. By this time the other party of four with toddler arrived and were promptly led across the room to the other side and seated. (Still one table for four left by us) then the unthinkable happened .One of our daughters asked if they could be seated at the table beside us. NO! said the Ice Queen. Then soon the reserved table beside us for four was seated with two people. Now, they did not want to provide a chair for the three year old toddler. Really! My daughter held her in her lap until about thirty minutes later the waiter suggested that he could bring her a highchair. Whew! Our mediocre food started to arrive. Crab cakes burnt, medium rare steak cooked medium well, coconut shrimp flavorless, and the list goes on. The stuffed fig appetizer was the only saving grace of this whole meal. Delish! After we all paid our bill including a little more than twenty percent tip in cash. We rose from our table to leave and as we did my husband casually asked the two peopled seated to his side if they had reserved that table. They looked at each other and then at him with a look of curiosity in their eyes and said, "no". The Wicked Ice Queen was watching our every move as she had been the entire evening. She saw my husband talk to the two people and immediately new she was caught. She ran to the back and retrieved the owner/chef who immediately started down the isle toward my husband who was laughing and talking with the two people like they were long lost friends. The owner/chef quickly had second thoughts and turned around and went and stood by the Wicked Ice Queen by the reception desk. As we were leaving my husband casually stopped and told the Wicked Ice Queen that the couple seated at the table said that they had not reserved that table. She said,"I know you did sir, I saw you"! At that point Mr Ross Burtwell owner/ chef stepped in with his two cents worth and said ,"sir this has gone on long enough, you need to leave". To which my husband replied," your right about that it has gone on long enough and we are leaving ." After dining at some of the finest restaurant's world wide never have we encountered such rudeness or lies. I guess they do not like children because that seems to be when things changed. Went with my family for Valentines Day. Took my son who did not eat because they did not offer a child's menu. Was told that he would be charged $80 if he ate or not. Was told by the manager that that they sold tickets for this dinning and that was their policy even though was never told this when making the reservation. I asked if I could leave and go somewhere else and the manger said we would still be charged $80 a person. If I would not have brought my son we would have been a party of 3 and still seated at a table with 4 chairs because there is not a 3 top table in the restaurant. I have dined at this restaurant several times because I live in Fredericksburg. To say the least I will never go back and will inform everyone I know in Fredericksburg. We ate at this restaurant last evening. The food was very good. The chicken fried ribeye was tender and the gravy was good. The crab au gratin was very good. The wait staff was really attentive. The only down tick was the $1.00 charge for a pat of butter that was requested with the bread. Now I can afford to eat there so I can certainly afford the butter. But, it is just the fact that this is the only restaurant I have ever eaten at that there was a charge for butter when the bread is $5.00 that grates on me and the others with me. Come on. Get off that because it turns off customers even when the meal is so good. After all, you are getting top dollar for your food anyway and the dollar charge leaves a bad taste in ones mouth. My husband and I came to Fredericksburg for a weekend getaway since we have not had alone time in 4 years since having kids. I looked on trip advisor for recommendations on food and this was listed as the #2 Restaurant. So we made reservations on a Saturday night. I was not disappointed! I had the Filet Mignon with russet mash. It lacked something. Service was good, john was helpful with choosing a dish. The water was definitely from the faucet, it tasted awful. When I asked the busser if the water was filtered he didn't understand me, walked away and never returned. Atmosphere was okay, it was busy for a weekday. I made reservation for Fri Api 1. Seeing on reservation form, they did not make reservations for table of 8 on a Fri night. Our group decided to divide into two tables of 4. I made reservations for the ladies and my husband made reservations for the men. When we arrived, we were told that our reservations had been cancelled because our last name was the same, they considered us a group of 8 even tho we had requested 2 tables. Hands down the best meal we've ever had, CA to TX! Made reservations for our anniversary & were greeted with an anniversary card on our table signed by the entire staff. The service was impeccable (Billy was our server), and the food was beyond our expectations! I was pleased to see the wines were all local & there was a great selection. I made a reservation for Cabernet Grill with high expectations, I had been told it was a great place to go for a nice dinner. So we arrived it has a beautiful location with wonderful landscaping and water fountains outside, the inside has a fun Texas shaped state made out of corks on it wall, so very pretty. We walked in I said hi to the Hostess she said do you have reservations? I said yes, she seated us in a small back corner table I asked her if she had a better table since it was our 11 year anniversary she said they were booked but gave us another small table that was a little better, so not a great start. I ordered the chicken fried steak with lobster it was supposed to be a ribeye steak it came with vegetables and a small side of mashed potatoes. The cfs was so tough it was like beef jerky... the vegetables were like frozen vegetables out of the bag with some seasoning. They never mentioned our anniversary and all the tables were never full. My dining experience tonight was atrocious and left me feeling sick at heart. The service and food weren't very good either, but that was the best of the evening. My server was polite and tried hard; he was simply untrained and seemingly unsupported. I asked several times for suggestions from their sommelier or a wine list knowledgeable person as to which bottle of wine to choose and was ignored. So, we didn't get a bottle. I ordered a glass of Tempranillo red; I received a Sav Blanc white. The side dish for the table never came and the steak came with the wrong sauce. Oh well, off nights happen. What was so bad? Witnessing the inexplicably and completely unnecessarily unkind treatment of an elderly couple and their family at the table next to mine. Apparently at one of the top 100 wine restaurants of 2018 (Wine Enthusiast), a family cannot sit at a table for four on a slow Thursday night and have their fourth arrive 15 mins later than the grandparents and granddaughter and still be seated to eat with them even though the fourth's food was ordered with the seated group's food. The daughter was driving in separately from Houston and had arrived a tad late. Crazy? It was explained tableside by the hostess that a later arriving guest could not be seated and served in the empty chair at the table, then the manager explained that allowing guests to be seated at different times was an undue burden on the kitchen and the restaurant's effort to turn tables. I am not kidding. This is what was told to this soft spoken kindly little couple and their family who were all in Fredericksburg as tourists from separate locations. I lost my appetite. I thought of paying for their meal and complaining myself. It's such a horrible feeling of powerlessness when you can't help someone who is being bullied. The elderly couple were so nice to everyone and even apologized to me if all the activity at their table had disturbed my evening. No member of staff offered any kindness in that regard. As I was leaving the restaurant, I spoke privately with the manager and respectfully expressed my dismay and disappointment. She explained again the restaurant policy and how the kitchen can't keep up and reservations would be pushed back. That policy wasn't made for this situation. I guess when the press is good and the chef has some celebrity, nevermind hospitality and the customer's experience if they are ordinary people who heard the buzz and wanted to have a great meal with family. No one in our section witnessing that service had a good experience regardless of their food. Hope y'all fix this so that no other patrons are beaten up with policy. Would be nice to get a Top 100 experience instead of wasting one of only two dinners in the area and $200. read more
