I hosted my daughter's 12 th birthday at a hotel nearby. We headed to grab coffee and hot chocolates around 10;30 am on Sunday. We wanted to grab them to go but the host would not allow us all to come in. It was extremely cold and the manager Joy refused to let the children come inside. She allowed my sister to go in and order and pay for the drinks but left our kids freezing outside. She was rude and inconsiderate. She stood in the warm area and watch 4 12 year olds freeze. Stopped here on a rainy Tuesday and was able to set outside on a patio with roof to protect us from rain. We ordered the mussels off the small-plate menu because the server said it was enough to share. She was right the serving was very large for a small plate. My first visit here today with my daughter visiting from out of town. We dined "outside" which was lovely. The glass made you feel like we were outside but we did not feel the cold wind. Opera music too! I loved the well marked menu as I am vegan and I actually had 2 options on the menu! They also had clearly marked gluten free options and how to modify menu items for your dietary preference. I am being sincere as 2 options is big in my world. I got the beet root salad (without the goat cheese) with some Jasmine green tea. It was a perfect lunch for me. My daughter had the strawberry waffles and her boyfriend had the Eggs Benedict. Not sure they enjoyed their meal as much as I did mine, because they didn't say. But we all agreed The ambience was lovely! I will be back with out of town guests for the 230 lunch again and again as not a fan of waiting for a table like I have read in other posts. Cafe Intermezzo has been around for a long time and its locations were notoriously known for having bad service as in the wait staff takes forever to get back to you. My husband, a friend and I were in Avalon killing some time before a movie. Surprisingly enough, service was fast. We got our coffees pretty quickly and the banana crepe we shared arrived shortly too. It's surprising how they were able to fit in a building like this in the Avalon since it's basically sandwiched between two roads. The walls are glass so you can see all the cars driving past. The space is a bit narrow but cozy so still in the theme of what you're used to at the other Cafe Intermezzo. The menu is pretty much the same. I have yet to come to Intermezzo for a meal, but I think I'll stick to their coffees, teas and desserts. I'm glad this place is in Avalon because Caffe Gio closes pretty early. Again, not sure if we were extremely lucky with service when we chose to come in, but we had a good time. read more

It is true that during times of distress, companies have increased responsibilities to keep their businesses afloat. It is indeed a stressful time for them. However, some of the practices I observed during my last visit to this establishment were below satisfactory. I had to constantly remind the server to remove the empty dishes so I can enjoy my cappuccino at the end of my meal. She didn't even wear gloves and was touching the inside of our plates while serving them. Also, I observed the manager (I believe it was) cleaning the adjacent table only with a dry napkin without spraying or disinfecting the table. We stayed for 10-15 more minutes after that and did not see anybody disinfecting it better. Before my visit, I also called to make a reservation, but no one answered the phone. Intermezzo needs to step up to the plate and deliver better service to its patrons! read more

Every-time we come here, we say we're not coming back, but what else do you have open late night with a decent atmosphere? That and the cakes are the positive draws of this place. I really should just buy one of those apartments over the Avalon because I am at this place ALL the time. I love the atmosphere here, it reminds me of the small cafes in Italy and is an excellent spot to people watch. There is a wide selection of coffee/espresso choices that are unique. I will warn you, the coffees here are nothing like Starbucks. The beverages literally have dark bitter chocolate in them so don't assume everything is going to be sweet. As for the food, it is nothing special. I really like their chicken salad/cheese plate but everything else has been OK for me (this is why I deducted a star). I regularly go to the Cafe Intermezzo at Perimeter and in Midtown. My boyfriend and I stopped in last night for coffee and dessert. Our coffees came out promptly and our one piece of cake took such a long time to bring out that we finished our coffees by the time the cake arrived. So the manager offered us another round of coffees on the house and we asked for decaf cappuccino. She must have made them regular with an extra shot of espresso, because I noticed how strong it tasted and then we were both up all night, could barely sleep and exhausted all day today. Cafe Intermezzo - can you please consider putting up little name cards explaining the cakes?? There is not always a staff person there to explain the options and often a large selection. Last night, there was a waitress/staff person there helping another group and explaining all of the cakes to them. When they ordered, she walked away and I was left standing at the dessert counter with nobody there to assist. I finally flagged down a waitress to tell me what the cakes were. I hate to write poor reviews on here because I am also a server and I know how difficult the job can be. However, I think it needs to be said just how terrible the management is at the Avalon location. My fiancé and I arrived at 8:30 pm, were sat at 9:00 on the dot, and did not even get our coffee drinks until about 9:25. We only came here for desserts and coffee and thought it would be relatively quick. I should also say we had a movie to get to by 10 and told our server at the beginning. After ordering dessert when she dropped off the coffee, we waited another 30 minutes for our cheesecake to finally arrive. By that time it was 9:55 and we said we really needed it to go by now since we had to leave for the movie. Partly our fault, we probably should not have shown up with only an hour to spend there but we honestly thought that was plenty of time from dessert and coffee. I would also like to say our waitress was lovely and did us a solid by taking the cheesecake off of our bill after the huge wait. It was my first time ordering food here and at the Avalon location. The ambiance is always my favorite for Cafe Intermezzo.I had the Bacon & tomato grilled cheese. It was awesome because of the combination of the gruyere cheese and bacon. The bread was thick and crispy, just how I like it. As a lover of grilled cheese, I highly recommend getting this. The coffee, Cappuccino L'Amore, I got was decent. Every Time I come here I order something different. It was not too sweet nor too bitter. My 3 friends had the French onion soup, petit dejeuner, and grilled cheese minus the tomatoes. They all had good things to say about their food too. Egyptian chamomile tea with honey was also served at our table, it was good, however, it tasted like regular chamomile tea you could get at the store. Great location! Very nice ambience, especially seated in the section facing the street. My favorite is the brunch menu that's available all day. The reason for my average rating is due to the quality of the service by some of the staff. The restaurant is flanked by a nice large common sitting area that's well frequented during weekends. Taking a drink out to this area warrants the drink being served in a plastic cup. Personally, that step alone seems to be a complete degradation of the premium experience. But that's not their fault, just restaurant and Avalon rules, I would think. What put me off was the service and the attitude that went with this downgraded experience. It was no less than trying to get a drink at a cheap bar, being repeatedly asked for your license for every drink (we were a group of 6)! Please dine within the restaurant. read more

I hate to add to the negative reviews since I have enjoyed other locations, however, this place is a mess. It starts at the layout/size, tramples its way through the food and finishes with the service. Just a horrible experience all around. 1. No highchairs, really? At a suburban mall?! 3. They brought everything out wrong and had to fix it. No apologies, just seemed like par for the course. Then they did the same to the table next to us. 3. Super cramped tables and it was only me and my 2 year old. Can't imagine a larger party than that. 4. The ambiance is also just seriously lacking here and what feels like a nice All be it Disneyland interpretation of a European cafe seems depressing and amateurish here. Personally with so many other good places at Avalon, and Alpharetta in general, I don't see why anyone would come here. Additional Note: Someone created an account with no reviews and no friends to reply to this review, call me fat, tell me that's why I found the restaurant cramped and that me losing weight would fix this issue. Not sure how me being fat affects that the tables only seating two people or how me losing weight is gonna make the cramped patio any more spacious. That said, it is incredibly suspect that they'd lash out without reason and I can only surmise that they are an employee or in some way related to this restaurant. We came here in a group of 5 for Valentine's Day - so it was a pre-fixed 3 course Valentine's Day menu for $85 (for two). You choose 1 Starter to share, house salad or soup, 2 Entrees and 2 pastries for dessert which would be served with champagne. So for the table, we went with one Naan and Lox and one Chicken Fladenbrot. The Naan and Lox was smoked salmon on flatbread and had subtle flavour of the cream cheese. The Chicken Fladenbrot was a bit more flavourful and the herbs they had added to it came through strong, but in a good way. Obviously I chose soup over salad, actually we all did. There were two options, Corn Chowder and Chicken Jambalaya. I went with the Corn, I tried the Jambalaya and it was ok too. For the Entrees we got Spicy Tortellini Alfredo with Salmon, Italian Gnocchi with Chicken, Chicken Florentine and Alfredo Spaghetti with Chicken. The Spicy Tortellini was quite good, although pretty heavy on the cheese. In fact, all the dishes had a lot of cheese and in general the dishes were really heavy, meaning we felt completely bloated and overweight the next day. Ok maybe not overweight, but I need to stop eating for the next few days (as if). None of us could finish the Entrees, the food took some time so I think we all got full on the Starters and soup. The cocktails were a bit average, I got the Vi Olson, Gimlet and Tom Collins, so I did sample a few to comment on this! We decided on 4 pastries to go, the chocolate milk, tiramisu, banana chocolate and a strawberry one. Once we got home, we saw that they had only given 3 of the 4 pastries, so that was annoying. It was a busy night and service was a bit slow, the waitress was nice though and recommended good dishes. The location setting is nice for couples, but if you come in a group - 4 or more, it's going to be difficult with seating, it's quite tiny and the small round tables don't work, also there's no waiting area, so you kind of stand awkwardly near the door till you're seated and manoeuvre yourself around when the waiters pass. It was an ok experience, I'd say it's a bit overpriced for what you get ($247 - includes 8 cocktails and 2 coffees). read more

I came here with my grandmother since she had never had Intermezzo but had heard it was good. The first time you notice when coming in is how absurdly tiny this location is. If I had to guess I would say this place is well under 1000 square feet. It's so small inside that they can only fit tables in a single file along one wall. The bar and kitchen are on the opposite wall. The tables can only fit two people, unless you put tables together. I would guess there are a dozen tables total inside and probably a dozen more outside. The menu is okay and honestly I don't even remember what I ordered. My grandmother did not like it at all. I had a slice of cake as well which is spectacular as always. But seriously, this place is so tiny and uncomfortable that I don't see myself going back unless I REALLY want some cake. read more
