Amazing drinks! My friends wanted to go to this place so I tried it out. Located few street lights from the cerritos mall, this place has large parking lot for you and your friends. Cafe 86 is really small but offers seats for few groups of friends. The line gets long quick due to its popularity. The indoor decor is amazing and the light bulbs are housed in mason jars which looked amazing. Free wifi as well. I ordered the ube monster smoothie. The most basic item with ube so I can taste how good the ube is. It tastes like taro and it tasted really good. I'm sure everything in the menu is amazing tho! I also ordered the ube pastry with the pudding on top. The pudding lacked sweetness but the pastry was delicious. I forgot what it was called but it has pudding on the top. Growing up in a Filipino American house I grew to adore ube from a young age. The growing ube hype has been blowing up in Los Angeles and Cafe 86 is definitely one of the spots that best embodies the growing Filipino food movement as a whole. The ube cupcakes were moist and packed a ton of flavor. It was drenched in caramel and the flan with the cupcake went together perfectly. The halo halo had a unique twist with adding boba which changed the flavor of the condensed milk completely. While still good I much prefer the more traditional halo halo. Ube bundt cakes here were probably my favorite and I highly suggest taking some to go because they run out quickly. read more

One of the reasons why I visit Artesia is Cafe 86. With that said its my go to spot for sweet desserts and other goodies. I never come in for one thing. I would buy an assortment tray of Vegan Ube Bundt Cake, Skyflakes Crack Cookie, Tipsy Mocha Pound Cakes, Ube Cracked Cheesecakes, Ube Leche Flan Cupcakes. Most of these may sound like Ube madness but these purple treats are moist, sweet and enjoyable to eat. It's one of their specialties and they do a good job in putting purple yam flavors to good use. I recommend coming in during the day. In the evening there may not be a lot to choose from at the pastry display case. They do sell out. It can be possible you'll be left with only Ube Truffles. In that case, call ahead of time to see what's available. On my first visit I remember getting the Ube Monster Ice Cream Sandwich. Between the chewy chunks of chocolate chip cookies is the smooth and creamy lavender colored Ube Ice Cream. They sell Ube Milkshakes and Lattes. Ube galore indeed! I ordered the Upside-down Halo Halo expecting some unique Ube drink but turns out it was a Taro blended drink with stuff added into it :) i used to work at a boba place i know exactly what Taro powder tastes like! I'm not sure if the other Ube drinks would taste the same as well but if they are you guys are mistaking what real Ube flavor tastes like :) I appreciate the person who made the drink who did it very quickly. Subjective: This place ended up on my "must visit" list as my sister is a big ube fan and I needed to scout out places before her next visit. After Filipino food for dinner, it seemed appropriate to finally try this place out for dessert. Unfortunately, no ube cupcakes with flan to be found late on a Friday night, so we opted for dessert drinks- ube milk tea and ube latte with boba. The ube latte had the stronger ube flavor and was slightly sweeter and the ube milk tea had a more subtle ube taste and was less thick. Both were delicious, but I personally preferred the milk tea. Been wanting to go to the one in Pasadena location for a while but don't find myself heading out to that area anymore especially since I get out of work later and all the baked goods are usually gone by then. I was so happy to hear that Cafe86 opened in Artesia area which is a reasonable distance from my work. Arrived there a little after 6PM and was excited to see they still had plenty of baked goods. I checked in on Yelp (of course) for the free Hibiscus Cooler (with purchase of a baked good). Ordered the Ube Cupcake with Flan and the Ube Crack Cheesecake. GET THE CHEESECAKE. BEST. DESSERT. EVER. Stopped by here a few weeks ago and was told they were out of pastries and that they only have certain ones on certain days. Not sure why they can't just bake them regularly. Finally made it over here today. I have no idea what the hype is about. The ube milk tea tasted mostly like coconut. The ube monster was basically melted ube ice cream. The halo halo bread pudding was paired with cheap ube is cream and all I could taste was the banana in the pastry. The ube truffle was super sweet and tiny. The other pastry we had also had no ube flavor- it was very plain. There was nothing here that was special and worth coming for. I barely tasted any ube in anything except for the ube ice cream itself. Considering how many pastry and drink places there are on just South St alone, I really can't understand why this place is so popular. read more

Ube is like purple sweet potato and is a popular ingredient/flavor used in a lot of Filipino desserts, for those who don't know. I got the Upside Down Halo Halo, which is basically like an Ube milkshake (technically a slush but tastes more like a milkshake because it's made with ice cream) with colored nata (coconut?) jelly and boba at the bottom, and vanilla ice cream, corn flakes, and a little flan on top. I requested Ube ice cream instead of vanilla, and no jelly or boba, because I thought it would be too filling. Verdict: It was pretty good! I'm convinced you kind of can't go wrong with milk and cereal, haha :) I would have preferred it to be more slush and less milk/ice cream, as it gets to be a bit much (heavy). I also wasn't a fan of the flan, as the texture was too thick and I prefer lighter, fluffier flan. But it was yummy! I've been back easily half a dozen times since I first tried their ube crinkles. I love experimenting with different locations that sell drinks. This was my first time at Cafe 86 and it was a pretty good experience. The worker was very nice and knowledgeable about the drinks available, so don't be afraid to ask about a drink you're not sure of! I tried the Ube Monster and the Rosie milk tea. The Ube Monster was delicious and I couldn't stop drinking it. However, the Rosie wasn't that great for me. The drink didn't really stand out and I didn't really want to finish it. Saw this place on the 'gram, especially with the ube movement that's been blowin up for this past year, so I decided to pay them a visit. I wanted to try their halo halo bread pudding, but unfortunately, the cashier said that they only serve them on Sundays. I opted for the churrochi (churro flavored mochi) with a scoop of ube ice cream on top, and it was pretty good but way too sweet. Also tried their ube truffles, and that was actually really good, especially with the oreo breading inside of it. Also tried their ube milk tea and mahalo mango iced tea, and it was pretty basic. The ube milk tea tastes just like a taro milk tea. Honestly, I thought their drinks and pastries were ok but short of spectacular. So yummy! I usually get the ube/leche flan cupcakes and the ube truffles. Today, I got the strawberry calamansi green tea and it was so refreshing. It wasn't too sour and it wasn't too sweet, but it had the taste of home I missed from the Philippines. It seemed pretty busy since the cafe was full but it didn't take long for me to order my drink and it didn't take long for them to make it either. It maybe took 5-7 minutes total. Thanks to my Hello Kitty twin Michelle T, I found out about the Cafe 86 opening up in Artesia! I've been wanting to try Cafe 86 for awhile now but making the trek out to Chino and Pasadena seemed a bit a daunting. I'm so thankful they now have a branch a bit closer to me. I got to checkout Cafe 86 in Artesia with my college buddy/fellow Yelper Mary Ann. It was 15 mins to closing but there was still a decent amount of customers there. I really wanted to try their ube cupcakes or ube crinkles but unfortunately because we came so late, they were sold out! Luckily though we still could purchase their desserts! I got the Ube monster and it was monstrous in size indeed! In between two gigantic chocolate chip cookies was a very healthy serving of ube ice cream. It is definitely one of the biggest ice cream sandwiches I have ever seen in my life. I really liked the ube flavor of the ice cream. It had the nice distinct ube flavor. The chocolate chip cookies also added a bit of a twist to it. Aside from the ube monster, I was able to get a hibiscus calmansai tea drink for free thanks to my Yelp check in. I loved the touch of calamansi in this drink. It was very refreshing. I was thirsty so their check-in offer for a hibiscus drink reeled me in. For a Saturday night, they had a good amount of their ube cupcakes topped with leche flan left. I ate one and it was oh so delicious. The cake was moist and the flan was a creamy goodness. Oops, I dripped some of the syrup from the flan on myself. Service was friendly. This little place has the popular hipster interior decor yet is comfortable and inviting. There are a couple of tables, some comfy chairs and six stools at a counter located at the front window (which is where I chose to sit). Order at the front counter and your name is called when your food/drink is ready. The young women working here were friendly and helpful. I came in for some sweet carbs and coffee. Unfortunately they were completely out of baked goods except for the Slutty Brownie. Fortunately the 3 remaining looked really good. This was around 4pm so the fact that they were out of pastries at this point didn't bode well for the customers coming in for the rest of the evening who would be greeted by an empty pastry case. I also ordered a nutella latte. As I looked at their menu board I suddenly noticed "pastrami sandwich" and, feeling a bit peckish, decided to take a risk and order that as well. The Slutty Brownie was fantastic. Half brownie and half chocolate chip cookie, this treat was big, soft and rich. My wonderful nutella latte was served at a temperature to begin immediate sipping. The nutella flavor was the perfect intensity - not so subtle it got lost nor was it screaming in my face. This latte was heaven in a mug. The piping hot pastrami sandwich was good yet ultimately a brave failure. It was uniquely served in two smallish pieces of pillowy thick pita bread. The too-large-pieces of pastrami were average quality (The Hat has nothing to worry about) and were covered in lots of gooey melted cheese of an unknown variety that was dripping all over plus plenty of yellow mustard. It was unbelievably messy and they only had tiny napkins, the type usually given with a beverage, which were completely inadequate to manage the greasy-mustardy mess. The pita bread was an interesting choice and they deserve a nod for the attempt at trying something different but it needs to go back to the drawing board. Additionally I'd reconsider the accompaniment to this sandwich: a handful of plain ruffle potato chips, probably poured from a large bag purchased at Costco. I like this place and hope they better manage their pastry supply and do a little tweaking on their menu items. And get some real paper napkins. read more

This place is ube heaven, and one of the few places that seems to get it right (IMO). I've tried ube desserts at other places but they all failed miserably because ube has a weak flavor. There isn't much you can do with its natural flavor, but Cafe 86 has found a way to either accentuate or complement its flavor with other ingredients to make a great tasting dessert. It serves various tea and dessert drinks, as well as some small food items, but I came here mainly for the pastry items. My two favorite items so far are Ube Crack Cheesecake and Ube Leche Flan Cupcake. The crust on the cheesecake is like "crack." It's so addicting. Not sure what they put in it but it's very rich and flavorful, and doesn't taste like a typical cheesecake crust. Even though it's pretty small, it's quite filling due the richness from ube and cream cheese. That's a lethal combination, in a good way. Ube Leche Flan Cupcake didn't have a strong flavor on the cake but the combination worked well to bring out its overall flavor. Some of the sauce on the flan dripped into the cake so it was pretty moist. Ube Monster Truffle was also good but it was a bit on the sweet side. It's basically a small ube cake covered with some white chocolate and Oreo cookie crumbs to give it a dark, chocolate like color. I also got the Hibiscus Cooler (free with Yelp check-in). It was refreshing without being too sweet. It's a pretty small place with limited seating so I wouldn't recommend coming here to study. Most of the people were just getting things to go. So delicious! UBE-everythang! On two seperate occassions: I tired the flan cupcake, churrmochi, ube truffle, ube latte, & their blended ube drink (i forget the name). The churrmochi, I thought I'd enjoy this more. Not sure but I think for some reason we expected crispy. It wasnt very crispy more mochi-y. Which is exactly what the menu says but we neglected to see the mochi part. Lol Ube latte, so so good. Super creamy and delicious. Ube truffle, honestly the ube flavor didnt stick out to me. It was over powered imo by the oreo crust. Still so good. Id get this again and again. Flan cupcake, delicious but we ended up pulling the flan off the top and eating it seperate. Not sure how practically designed this dessert is but it is definitely delicious. Ice blended ube drink -- pretty good and the oreo topping at the bottom is a little hard to get it mixed in. I think topping should go on the... well... top. Haha Overall whats going to keep bringing me back is the ube latte, truffle, and the always changing ube treats in their dessert case! When I used to work in a restaurant, the term 86 or 86ed means "throw something away" or "we're out". Funny how this cafe is named "Cafe 86" and most complaints are about running out of cupcakes. I'm usually pretty blase about bakeries - after living with a baker for many years (...and trying most of the popular places in SF), I'm often disappointed whenever I spend my hard-earned money on baked goods only to realize I have access to better sweets from my living room. That said, Cafe 86 blew me out of the water. I've had an obsession with ube for as long as I can remember... the roasted yams themselves are one of my favorite treats! My partner doesn't know how to work with ube, so I figured Cafe 86 would be a great place for me to expand my dessert horizons. I came on a Wednesday, so I got their trademark ube flan cupcakes (check their Instagram for which treats they are serving on which days! They rotate through desserts throughout the week). I actually picked them up as a gift for a friend. I was very happy to learn that they have nice packaging, so it wouldn't look sloppy (they told me they have packaging for 1, 2, 4, and 6). I was already happy with Cafe 86 because of the good service and nice packaging, but it wasn't until I actually tried the cupcakes that I realized I had stumbled upon something special. The flan was decadent, creamy, and rich... I've never had anything like it (best flan I've had!). The cupcake was moist, with deep, earthy ube flavor. After scouring SF and NYC for cupcakes, I don't even like cupcakes anymore - except this one. In fact, it's the best cupcake I've ever had. Way better than Sprinkles, Magnolia, Georgetown, etc... If only my partner could make cupcakes as good... Until then, it's Cafe 86 for me! I'm dying to try their other baked goods. read more

I placed an order online so I could just pick up my order and leave. I ordered online so that I could get in and get out fast. I walk in and see three workers behind the counter. NO ONE greeted me, no one said hello, no one acknowledged my existence. One girl behind the counter was putting on lip gloss and gossiping with a guy worker. And I watched as another worker was restocking the baked good station. She then took a cart and container all the way to the back, messed with the register and then finally asked how I could be helped. Overall I must have waited 7 minutes which isn't that long, but no one even told me to wait no one told me anything. I was just waiting at the counter like an idiot. I even rang the bell at the counter to show that I needed something. If they said hello and asked for a minute I would have understood. But the lack of acknowledgement made those 7 minutes feel like an eternity. I'm so disappointed. The food could be bomb, the ambiance could be nice, but if the service sucks, you lose customers. I'll drive further away to get my halo halo from now on. read more

Really good drinks! Baked goods were Okay. Check in for a free hibiscus cooler, it was really good, add a little sweeter syrup to enhance the flavor. Got to try the matcha brownie and ube flan. The matcha brownie just tasted like a regular fudge brownie, can't taste the matcha. Or the chocolate flavor was too overwhelming. The flan on the ube cupcake was good. I thought the ube cupcake itself was okay. Kind of tough and not as moist and flavorful as I hoped. The ube milk tea is really good! read more

Was curious to try the ube leche flan cupcakes and they did not disappoint. Their cupcake flan combination was perfect and not overly sweet which I was afraid of. Thankfully I got two cupcakes as I scarfed one down in the car and saved the other for later haha read more
