Incredible food, great ambiance, excellent UES restaurant. I had the Chicken Schnitzel with lemon, basil & cucumber salad. It was perfect. My mom had the Little Gem Tahini Caesar. It comes with three HUGE grilled shrimps, toasted sesame & parmesan. Our friend had an eggplant dish. I had a bite of everyone's food, EVERY dish was excellent. All of the ingredients tasted super fresh. The bread basket was notable. Each piece was great. The salted butter was DELISH. We all left extremely satisfied. We went somewhere else for dessert, but all agreed that we should have stayed for dessert. We will be back. read more

Out on a weekday with a friend and we tried to get into a restaurant before we decided to come here. But the wait for that restaurant was long so we tried our luck here. We were able to snag two seats at the bar. I was excited to try it out. The lighting in here is kinda odd. I don't know how to explain it. There is also a huge mural at the bar area. They do ask here not to leave an open bar seat so we had to move down one so there was no open seat in-between where we were sitting and where the others were. Which makes sense but we had people next to us that did not seem too thrilled to have people sitting close to them and that made my experience not so great for the time being. When my main course came they were gone and we were able to enjoy ourselves more. To start I had the deviled eggs and for my main dish I had the rigatoni commerce carbonara. Both dishes were tasty. To drink I got the JERSEY BOY which was made from Gin, Saint Germain, Cucumber, Lemon, Mint. It was good. My friend got a glass of wine and she had the salad to start and then I forgot what she got as her main dish. We did not get dessert but they look wonderful. On a recent trip to the Big Apple, I decided to meet friends for dinner on the UES. We met at Café Commerce which is your quintessential favorite neighborhood restaurant. When we arrived at 7 pm on a Saturday night it was packed so definitely make a reservation. The restaurant is small and cozy and the tables are set close to each other. We had lots of question for the people next to us about what they ordered. There is also a long bar that runs the length of the restaurant. We started with drinks and appetizers. Definitely order the Chips & Dip. You can't go wrong with house made potato chips, onion dip & smoked roe. I also ordered the beef carpaccio which is not served the traditional way. The carpaccio is served on crispy hash browns. For dinner, I ordered calves liver with caramelized onions, bacon and dates. I also got a side of mashed potatoes. My friend M ordered the duck au poivre which is something that I would normally order. It was perfectly cooked to medium rare. Our friend K ordered the charred salmon with avocado, crisp vegetables and green goddess dressing. She went for the healthy option! Back to the table next to us. They ordered the birthday cake and it looked delicious. On their recommendation we also ordered it and it was indeed delicious. It was like old time birthday cake that I had growing up. I will definitely make a return to Café Commerce the next time I'm in the Big Apple. read more

The food here is exceptionally good. We got the herb salad and tortellini to start, and both were notably good versions of each. The tortellini was stuffed with delicious sweet and savory sweet potato, and was served with fried sage in a really nice brown butter sauce with pomegranate seeds. I got the calves liver, which was well prepared and tasty. My wife got the steak, and said it was definitely the best steak she had ever gotten in her life. We finished with the coconut cake, which was huge and delicious. One thing to note: the restaurant is kinda pricey Eve for New York (for example: the cheeseburger cost $37). The food is good enough to be worth it, but just know going in that it's going to require some spending. read more

I went here recently to celebrate my birthday. My husband and I came on a Thursday night with our reservation starting at 8 p.m. It was packed! The restaurant was completely full with hopeful patrons coming in, trying their luck for an available table, only to come right out, foiled. The prices here were -- whew -- trés chéres! You'd hardly find a dish for less than $25. I have noticed that French restaurants in the city tend to be pricey. I wonder why that is? Overall, the food was good. Each table came with complimentary bread and whipped butter. I enjoyed the parmesan sticks and the pretzel bread. They were best enjoyed warm; otherwise, they did get hard. For appetizers, I got the scallops which were so delicious but a touch salty. Same critique for the beef carpaccio, although my husband says they are trés manifique. For mains we ordered the bistro burger, which my husband loved and would return for, and I got the steak Diane. I thought the steak tasted fairly average for something that was worth $66. Not bad, just average. I definitely have had better for a lower price, at establishments like Keen's and Lord's. Of everything that we ordered, I enjoyed the fries the most. They were crispy yet retained a soft potato-ey interior, which to me indicated that they weren't overdone. But the star of the show? The PAVLOVA. The meringue was perfectly light and crumbly, the berries fresh, and the passion fruit curd added the right tartness and acidity you need to cut through all the sugar. It was PERFECT. Hassle getting a reservation here. You must go through Resy and leave a credit card. On a Thursday night it was crowded and noisy but the wait people were friendly and efficient. Had the duck and friend had the stuffed cabbage. Both were very good and the duck came with the best French fries. The only disappointment were the profiteroles which were made with soggy pastry and had whipped cream which is unnecessary with this dessert. Also they don't serve decaf espresso. Food: - Stuffed Artichoke: I wasn't sure what to expect, but it turned out to be a fully mature artichoke (the kind where you pull off each leaf and scrape off the tender part) topped with poached eggs, hollandaise, and roasted tomatoes. Interesting idea, but not very cohesive to eat, and far too rich. - French Omelette: My friend had this, and it looked like a very regular omelette for $42. - Cinnamon Roll: Each entrée comes with a complimentary cinnamon roll, which was a fun touch. Café Commerce is doing a lot right and we really enjoyed our meal. The smoked trout roe dip was just okay for me. It had an almost overpowering acidic note that clashed a bit with its creaminess. The fava beans, though, were absolutely amazing. Hands down the best veggie side I've had in Manhattan. They were drenched in bacon juice and chunks, decadent in the best way, but sadly only a temporary dish. My wife really liked the burger and the chicken soup was exquisite -- rich, comforting, and perfectly seasoned. Really exceptional meal with some minor issues that have nothing to do with the food. Very small restaurant with tables very close together so be prepared. Service was good but they did forget my drink order, and brought a piping hot plate of scallops to the table without warning us. Needless to say, my wife burnt her hand on the plate. Other than that, the bread basket was so good with the soft butter on the side (why doesn't every restaurant have soft butter?), the scallops were amazing, especially with that bread to dip in the sauce! That said, flavor and atmosphere don't mean much if basic cleanliness is overlooked, which makes your restaurant look like a plastic shop, or worse, dishonest in restaurant business. Sadly one of the owners is such a let down for his constant bad mood and grumpy face, which actually hadn't affected us till today. Cafe Commerce on Lexington has such a warm neighborhood vibe -- the energy inside is genuinely inviting. Service was great, everyone was attentive without hovering. We weaseled our way into Cafe Commerce due to a last minute opportunity on Resy. The space is long and narrow. The playlist was fun and the ambient noise wasn't overwhelming. The service was attentive but not totally dialed in. Cocktails and wjne were good. The bread service was excellent, especially the soft pretzels. It's free with the order of an entree. The food ranged from very good to excellent. The deviled eggs were awesome. We got the broccoli as an appetizer and it was really good. The salad was good, but not at the level of the other apps. I had the pappardelle with rabbit. It was excellent and beautifully seasoned. One friend raved about the branzino. There was a split decision on the salmon. My buddy loved it, my wife didn't like it as much. The four of us split a gigantic slice of coconut cake for dessert. Prices are a bit more than most neighborhood restaurants but the quality warranted it. Great addition to the upper east side dining scene. Finally made it here. I was really excited about a new restaurant opening in the neighborhood, but I'm walking away with mixed feelings. Although they opened back in January, the service and timing still need work. The staff is kind and well-meaning, but clearly not well-trained yet. Now, let's talk about the food. The marinated hamachi and sea scallops were truly delightful. Both my husband and I would happily order them again. Unfortunately, we waited quite a while for the bread service, which only arrived after our appetizers. When it did arrive, it was fine, but nothing memorable. We had requested well-done, crispy French fries to be served with our entrees, but they came out early and were soggy. The filet was excellent, and both of us enjoyed it. My salmon, on the other hand, looked fantastic but was room temperature when served. I sent it back, and it came out tasting like it had been reheated in a microwave, so I sent it back again. On the brighter side, the 20-herb salad was both interesting and well-balanced, with perfect dressing. For dessert, the coconut cake was lovely, light and flavorful. The dining area is small, and we were fortunate to grab two seats at the bar. I would return for the appetizers, the steak, and perhaps to try a different entrée. But I'm not rushing back anytime soon. With other local favorites liked Cognac and Bella Blu that consistently deliver great food and service, this place still has some catching up to do. read more

Nice addition to this area, welcoming staff, helpful, gregarious waiter. We were seated in the front by the windows which is probably where the best tables in the house are. Why? The restaurant is VERY loud and the front tables have a bit of a buffer from the relentless cacophony in the center of the room and bar area. I started with the delicious sweet potato tortellini, a Cafe Commerce classic I'm told was carried over from the original West Village location. The brown butter sauce with hazelnuts and pomegranate seeds really made the dish. For my main I had the duck au poivre, cooked perfectly and the sauce was absolutely divoon. It comes with perfect French fries for sopping up the sauce. The martinis are made competently and served in beautiful glasses. My friend had the chicken schnitzel which he enjoyed. I tasted a piece and because I've had so many great schnitzels in Vienna, I found it underwhelming. It didn't have airy spaces between the meat and the crust like an authentic schnitzel and was cooked with way too much butter. But the salad served on top, with chunky pieces of celery, tomato and cucumber, is a nice foil. And then there was dessert. You've probably seen the gimmicky, massive slices of coconut cake on Instagram. We had high hopes for this but it was like trying to eat a doorstop. Way too dense and at $26 per slice...well, we gently complained and the waiter graciously took it off the bill. As an American Express Reserve card member (I booked through RESY) I am sure I would never be banished to the most Siberian of Siberia tables ever in the otherwise warm and gently lit room. This sadistic little booth, which is so far from the other tables I think it's in a different zip code, is bathed in sickeningly bright florescent light from the adjacent kitchen, and is flush against the check register. When I walked by it on my way to the bathroom (yes, it's also near the bathroom) the hapless couple sitting there looked so miserable, they resembled a pair of souls being tortured in a Hieronymus Bosch representation of Hell. If you're seated here, I'm sure the restaurant is sending you a very loud and clear message: Don't come back! But all in all, we had a lovely experience and enjoyed chatting with the chic UES ladies seated near us. The room definitely invites conviviality. read more

The service is 5 star, it's just the food that is so below average. Scallops with escargot butter- sounds great but it's way too rich, not enough acid and you wasted these scallops they have no sear on them. Hamachi is just flat and uninspired. The rabbit in the pasta was so dry and the flavor profile lacked depth. The chicken was the best dish hands down, but really? It's chicken! It was the foie gras stuffing that was exceptional. The most offensive thing is the martini, they say they have blue cheese stuffed olives... they are jarred. Not hand stuffed and not fresh at all. They have no flavor and have the wrong texture, for 24 dollars they should be real and not cheap generic from a jar or don't offer it! Lastly, they were mixing bottles of wine right on the floor in front of guests. That's a back of house thing if you feel the need to do it! read more

Stuffed cabbage - 9/10. Flavorful. Weird but the knives they gave us did not cut it well. Maybe because serrated knives would have worked so much better. That's a bad oversight. Commerce Cheeseburger - 8/10. Modest-size. Very simple. Comes with delicious fries. Birthday Cake - 7/10. Coconut Cake - 7/10. I suppose the cakes are all about dessert preferences. But the cakes were each pretty dry. The frosting on each was fine. Chocolate had ok filling between the slices, very different chocolate flavor vs. the frosting. Coconut filling was also very different from its frosting. We ordered both so we could try both. Large slices. One is more than enough for two people. Neither was competitive in either the dessert category or the more specific cake-for-dessert category. Nowhere near the chocolate cakes at Claud or Polo Bar. We were pleased overall. Kind of an odd one in that it was the total package that drove our POV. Sometimes a simple and pretty good dinner with a friendly team in a fairly quiet space is absolutely the right answer.
