    Kaiserschmarren Sacher Torte
    Katelynn T.

I tried the original Sachertorte in Vienna and had to try this one here. Cafe Sabarsky's sachertorte was delicious in its own right, and paired with the whipped cream, was amazing. I would say the shell is softer than the original, but I enjoyed it just the same. The kaiserschmarren was also yummy and had a great crisp to it. It is quite pricey for what you get (and obviously if comparing with prices in Austria). The cafe itself with very cute and aesthetic and didn't feel rushed while catching up with a friend

Weiner Schnitzel with Potato-Cucumber Salad and Ligonberries

Despite the long wait and line without a reservation, after ordering, the drinks and food were ready probably in less than 20 minutes. I was surprised by the speed the food came out. The lighting was moody but the lights shone through the many windows mid-afternoon. The walls were deep brown with intricate designed carved into the wood. The Cucumber Juice with Sparkling Lemonade didn't taste like what I expected -- a spa in liquid form -- but it wasn't necessarily bad. It was refreshing. The Weiner Mélange was strong, although it wasn't so creamy and balanced I would order it again for $9. The Weiner Schnitzel wasn't as crispy as I hoped, a bit difficult to cut into sometimes. However, the sweetness of the ligonberries paired perfectly with it. The breading wasn't too thick either. The Viennese Beef Goulash with Herbed and Creamed Spätzle was filling. The beef goulash fell apart with a light slice of the knife and was flavorful. I wish the creamed spätzel had more of a herb flavor for depth; I tasted more of the creamed. Finally, the meal concluded with the star of the show: the Shredded, Caramelized Pancakes, Roasted Fruit Compote, and Toasted Almonds. The pancakes were fluffy and thick, reminiscent of a sponge cake or soufflé. The caramelized layer wasn't too thick. The compote and almonds weren't too sweet. It was perfection.

My fiancé and I took my mother here for dinner while she was visiting us in the city. We made a reservation a few days in advance which I definitely recommend now that all the tables were completely full by the time we got here at 6:15pm on a Friday. We passed the security area and then found the cafe immediately on the ground floor. The host greeted us kindly and showed us to our table. This cafe is just stunning-- the wooden furniture and walls, large windows facing the park, the dim lightning, all create a cozy but refined atmosphere. It gives off pristine Central European vibes. We were also lucky and they had a live pianist while we were eating which really elevated the ambiance further. Our waitress was very pleasant and available to help us with all our needs. She took our orders and answered all our questions. We ordered some mulled wines which were perfect for the cold weather, they were spiced and not sweetened at all which I liked. While we waited for our food, we also got some complimentary bread and butter. The bread had some seeds and a nice flavor to it. The butter was creamy and a little salty. The food came out very quickly! We tried: - Smoked trout crepes: perfect to split! This comes with 3 small crepes which were filled with generous smoked trout and came with a side of creme fraiche. The trout was smoky without being fishy and the cold crepes were the perfect light but bright starter. There were some tangy elements from the pickled cucumbers it came with and fresh cherry tomatoes. Very refreshing. The creme fraiche was very good and I used the leftover on the complimentary bread which was also amazing! - Chicken paprikas: my mom ordered this and really enjoyed it. The chicken was so tender it fell off the bone. It came in this very rich and thick tomato and paprika sauce. The dish came with a side of creamed spatzle which are egg noodles and had a creaminess that balanced out the rich spiced sauce. Very comforting. - Beef goulash: my fiancé got the goulash which similarly had super tender beef in a rich sauce and paired with spatzle for a comforting balance. This sauce also had hints of paprika but was far more subtle than that of the chicken paprikas. Very nice dish, really filling. If you like goulash, definitely order this! - Wiener schnitzel: having had schnitzel in Vienna, I had cautious hope about this. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised. The breading was slightly thicker here and less airy in general and the meat a bit less tender but I liked how it was not so greasy and I did like that the breading was overall very thin. The lingonberry sauce was quite sweet and would have preferred it on the side. The potato salad though was really amazing and reminded me of that we had in Vienna. It was the perfect side to have with the schnitzel with its pickled, tangy, and herbal elements. - Warm cheese strudel: this dessert was perfect! It came warm and had a moist consistency, almost like a hybrid between a tres leches and a French toast. The cheese was a bit sweet but had little hints of savoriness which really helped balance the dish. - Sachertorte: nice chocolate and apricot cake. This was a lot breadier and less moist than the ones we had in Vienna, however, still good! I thought the chocolate, apricot, and rum balance was perfect. - Hot chocolate: best hot chocolate I have had in a while! Creamy but not too thick, perfectly sweet without being too overwhelming, and had the right amount of chocolate. The whipped cream was light and added a really aesthetic and refreshing touch. They offer a version with rum as well but the original was my favorite. Overall, I had an amazing dinner here! The service was good, the food was amazing and perfectly comforting for the cold weather, and the ambiance was just impeccable. I think this is the perfect spot to bring parents to impress them and have a nice meal. I definitely want to try their brunch/ lunch one day although know those are walk in tables. Would recommend for dinner and or coffee + dessert!

We came in for coffee and a dessert , didn't stay for dinner . Huge disappointment : dry , not tasty , couldn't feel any apricots at all and small as well. And all this for 14.5$. I Kidd you not Does not seem worth the hype

We went here for lunch after going thru the art galleries. It's a beautiful restaurant in part of the mansion with neue gallerie. The Austrian theme relates to the Klimt exhibit (Austrian artist). We both had very tasty lunches. Café Sabarsky offers a modern take on the culinary heritage of Austria with a menu that reflects the history and allure of the Viennese café. We both enjoyed our food. I had the bratwurst meal that came with sauerkraut and potatoes. My companion had the cheese sausage fish w pickled beets and a cucumber potato salad. They have a nice wine list as well as divine desserts that were very tempting! Our server was helpful, fun and knowledgeable. Definitely would come back!

It was my first time trying Austrian cuisine and ended up really enjoying it. I ordered the Bratwurst mit Sauerkraut & Rösterdäpfel and a Hausgemachte Trinkschokolade mit Vanille Eiscrem. Service was great and ambiance was elegant.

Whenever we visit this place, we had to stay in line. I even waited for over an hour in the freezing New York weather and it was worth the wait. We love their foods, from bratwurst to braised beef with spatzel. The highlight is also the desserts time. They have a wide selection of choices. We especially love the Black Forest cake. My husband who's from Germany originally always says it feels like he is back in Europe here!

There's a lot of waiting! My boyfriend waited maybe 40 minutes on a weekend late lunch around 3pm. We did get a very nice corner booth seat by the window. We weren't super hungry but wanted to try the spatzle and wurst, both were very good. The desserts they have on display around the restaurant which was great to see.

I was on a trip to get my Schengen visa and this was my first stop exploring different cuisines while I'm in NYC. Café Sabarsky is names after Neue Galerie's New York founder Serge Sabarsky. This is inside the museum and doesn't require to purchase the museum tickets to have a quick bite. There is a security check that you need to get through to get to the cafe and it's one of few restaurants that are Michelin recommended and offer a breakfast menu on few days of the week. The entrance to the cafe doesn't give you entrance to the museum. However you definitely could go to the museum store. The service was elegant and professional to that of an highend restaurant. The restaurant was packed, with most of the seats filled. Strangely though there was never a wait. There's limited options if you are a vegetarian, we tried 2 different crepes, the trout and apricot confiture crepe, both were great and definitely recommend it. They were perfect to start your morning light on a day I had planned a few more restaurants to get to. This is my second time trying out Austrian cuisine.

    Apple strudel
    Erin C.

After visiting a gallery nearby, we stopped by this cafe for a dessert in the afternoon. The inspiration came from wanting an apple strudel with the whipped cream from the movie Inglourious Basterds. This cafe has also been on my list in the UES so I was excited to check it off! As far as the desserts, we ordered the Apple Studel, which is what we came for and my companion loved it. For me, it didn't taste that fresh. We also got the sachertorte, which came a bit dry but could be the way it is. I think if we came in the morning the desserts would have tasted more fresh. We also ordered refreshments to complement the baked goods. My iced coffee drink was served a bit messy and I couldn't finish it as the taste wasn't on point. The vibe was casual and almost felt cafeteria-like, even though there were nice booths along the windows. We were seated in the middle in very tight quarters at cafe tables, which may have added to this cafeteria-like experience. Cakes and desserts were presented along a wall covered by plastic cloches, which is where the servers took the pieces from. We had waited 10-15 minutes in a line outside and then inside of the building, which made it seem like the cafe was elevated in ambiance - it wasn't. This is a casual place to grab a quick snack or drink but do not expect anything more in terms of ambiance.

Cafe Sabarsky has been on my list for years, recommended to me by a few people. Located inside the Neue Galerie, it's a very classy, cozy cafe that serves cakes for breakfast! It's Austrian/German. There was already a line before they even opened, and you enter separately (no museum visit needed) and do a security check. I had to throw away my water - so just FYI. The location is great as it's across from Central Park and close to the MET and Guggenheim. I came with my friend that new the routine, so we both ordered the Palatschinken mit Räucherforelle & Oberskren - a Chilled Smoked Trout Crêpes & Horseradish Crème Fraîche. It's delightful and since it's a smaller entree, we also shared the Zwei weiche Eier im Glas mit Brioche - Two soft - boiled Eggs in a Glass & Brioche. The coffee here is STRONG and $9 a glass, it's elegant, and I had two. No room for cake here but definitely want to come back and try to get in line for lunch (they have some similar offeriengs) but I think it's a great spot for breakfast and set the mood for your tour of NYC.

I sum up my experience with a very eloquent "meh." The atmosphere of the restaurant inside the converted mansion museum was interesting, but overall the food was uninspiring for the price. We arrived about 11:40 on a Saturday morning as a party of 2. Instead of putting your name down with a hostess, you wait in line in the lobby and won't know how long the wait will be. We were the third party in line and ended up waiting about 45 minutes for our table. I ordered the apple strudel and their 'house made' chocolate milk. The chocolate milk was more of a milkshake with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, but it tasted good. Both dishes came with a generous amount of whipped cream, but I was surprised to find that it was unsweetened and lacked flavor. I'm not sure if this is normal or if I was simply unlucky today. I ended up scraping it off the drink and putting it aside. Being my first time eating at an Austrian restaurant, I'm not sure how the strudel compares, but it was good, not great. Service was unremarkable and we had few interactions with our waiter.

Are children under 12 allowed in the cafe?

    Yes

Is it usually busy Saturday mornings for breakfast?

It might be-- better to make a reservation online to guarantee you can get seated without standing in the long line to enter the museum itself

    Can you reserve a table?

Only for dinner. Breakfast and lunch are first-come, first-served.

Can we have the desserts to go?

i don't know the answer for sure, but think why not? give them a call in advance. normally there is a fee to enter the museum, that's why i always make reservation and skip the line/entrance fee.

For the prices and the pedigree, though, you'd expect more from the décor and furniture. It genuinely felt like sitting in someone's dining room, just with a bigger bill at the end of the night. Worth knowing the full arc here, because it's a good one: Wallsé is chef Kurt Gutenbrunner's flagship, an Austrian restaurant that's occupied the same corner of the West Village since 2000. Gutenbrunner trained at Michelin-starred Tantris in Munich and spent a decade working under David Bouley before striking out on his own, and Wallsé earned its first Michelin star in 2006, holding it for an impressive 17 consecutive years. That streak ended in 2022, the exact window this visit fell into, so the "1 star" I noted at the time was Wallsé right at the edge of losing recognition it had carried for nearly two decades. The wine list is a genuine point of pride here too, all-Austrian and repeatedly named the best of its kind in New York, which tracks with the impressive collection on display. My friends and I ended up ordering what amounted to a self-assembled tasting menu: foie gras terrine and a hand-cut tartare with soft egg and caviar to start, then Wiener schnitzel with potato and cucumber salad, short rib "goulash" with young carrots and crème fraîche, a chicken breast with stem cauliflower and leek purée, and a Bavarian pretzel on the side. These are the exact dishes the restaurant is known for, the schnitzel especially is the one people consistently point to as the reason to come here. I'll be honest, I was disappointed across the board. I've spent real time in Vienna, multiple visits, and genuinely love the food there and the coffeehouse culture that comes with it. I came in hoping to recreate a piece of that. What I got instead felt like a kitchen trying to be clever for the sake of being clever, without a clear point of view behind any of it. Fine dining, at its best, gives you something unexpected but coherent, dishes with a real idea underneath them that reward the extra attention and the extra cost. This didn't feel like that. It felt like ambition without execution, dressed up and priced accordingly. I'm not a food critic, and I don't pretend to understand how hard professional kitchens actually are to run. But when a place misses the basics and charges a premium for the miss, I'm going to say so. Impressive wine list, impressive room in theory, food that didn't back any of it up on the night I was there. Given they've since lost the star that got me in the door in the first place, I don't think I was alone in that read.

I first heard of this place featured from an episode on Eater with…read moreGeorge Motz saying he loved coming here, funny enough the day I went, which was 1/24/26, George was eating dinner at the bar. It's a cute place, nothing fancy but a place you really can come hang out any day of the week. If I lived in the area I could see my myself ending up here any day of the week. I guess that's why when I went with fellow Yelper Sara L she said she has gone many times and wanted to take me since she knew I would enjoy it. The food: Gebackene Champignons- Fried Mushrooms- OK to preface they are kinda plain and boring the first few pieces. But the more I ate it the more I was like wow, these are actually good and kinda addictive. I enjoyed these and I enjoyed they gave a nice big portion. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=Y_iTTjKvV5hLy-880SZzlA&select=wXMnSOv4x6gNG-gHh3t40Q Potato Latkes- These were on the specials page and they were good, nice crunchy and fried well but these were mixed with something since the taste was a bit different and the color wasn't that nice golden brown color you associate with latkes. Goulash- This was a dish George had and honestly, they were amazing. Highly recommend. I thought the flavor but more importantly the texture was amazing. A lot of times when you have slow cooked beef, they could sometimes get stringy and chewy, no not here. Also the spätzle was a really great pairing. Mussels- These were some fat ass mussels. The flavor of them was good, the night I went they were spicyyyyyyy. This was a well made dish and i appreciate their creativeity but I do prefer a simple garlic shallot butter and white wine where I want to drink the broth afterwards. The broth on this was too spicy too drink. Roasted Boneless Pork Chop- Pork chops are always a gamble and the one here was just OK. The sauce it came in was nice, kind on the heavy side but a delcious cream sauce. The pork was cut super thin and unfortunely they came out dry and chewy. The fries were a nice shoestring fry which were nice and crunchy. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=Y_iTTjKvV5hLy-880SZzlA&select=14_-Katrn9Glu-wA65-CHg
