Aggressively mediocre. I went for beef patties and they didn't have any. Ordered the jerk chicken burrito instead, overall it was okay. The chicken was flavorful but they didn't do a good job of evenly distributing the lettuce and cheese in the tortilla. One bite would be a giant hunk of lettuce, the next bite would be a giant blob of cheese, etc. The woman making the food was really nice, the woman who rang up people was just okay. A quick peek at what you can feast on. Cafè Connection takes me back home every time I go there. From the Roti to the Beef Patties or even the Rice and Peas. OMG!!! Curry Chicken, Chicken and Cabbage over some white rice. I'm salivating while typing this. Ken and Debbie are the owners and I adore them to the core. The way they operate their business is indicative of true caribbean culture. They greet you with a friendly smile and ensures you won't leave unsatisfied. Ken is always playing some type of reggae music so as you enter your feel as if you've left the hustle and bustle of downtown Sacto and landed on white sandy beaches. The aroma of mouth watering delight can be taken in before you even grace the entrance. Even though they are located down town, it is an ideal spot. If you're on the go as I am transitioning from the freeway to the restaurant and back to the freeway is really easy. The only difficulty sometimes would be parking. Now I don't even try to find a spot on the street. The L street parking garage is right above them and I gladly pay the $1.50 just to have what's on the menu. They are even walking distance to the new Golden 1 Arena. So if you you're going to catch a weeknight game, I would stop in for an early dinner at Cafè Connections. If you're worried about eating to much you can walk it off on your way to the arena. LOL.... My recommendations are: Roti wrap, Curry Chicken over white rice, Beef Stew over Rice and Peas, and of course the Beef/Chicken Patties. Jerk Burger. Once you see that written on the A-frame sign on the sidewalk, you can't help but to stop, rub your eyes and read it out loud, when was the last time you had jerk anything? Then the smell of curry frolics up your nostrils and ever so gently tugs you into the restaurant by your nose hairs. This was my first time here, definitely not the last. You have got to hand it to them for putting such a cool and practical twist on something as simple as a cheeseburger. There was nothing fancy about it: it came on a paper plate with a side of tots and a dollop of catsup, very similar to something your uncle would make up at a backyard family picnic after a few Dos Equis'. I can't wait to come back next week and get my jerk on again. I don't hand out 5 stars like candy, but the owner took the time to hang out and talk about how he makes his seasonings himself and just interact with me. I really dig that kind of thing. If you have the chance to get the jerk chicken plate with red beans, rice and salad, it's a good place to start. Also, it really will clear your sinuses! One of those delayed spice effects. I was on my way to catch Coast to Coast, but was to slow as they were pulling away before I could cross the street. I was at a loss for what i was going to have for lunch. I remember seeing Cafe's sign, when i was getting cookies next door, so i figured since I'd already walked this far, I may as well check them out. I ordered the Jerk Chicken lunch special, with rice and beans and salad. The combo meal came with a drink all for $7.50. I love being able to get a complete lunch for under $10. Loves it!! The jerk chicken was seasoned nicely. The beans and rice were tasty. They don't make me want to run back, but I'd get them again. The salad was basic lettuce, but it was fresh. Today I had the vegetable curry (with a side of red beans/rice & a salad), some roti, and fritters, along with a sorrel. The case of the Mondays is strong in this one... Removing stars for slow service, rude staff, and patty shortages. With no one else ahead of us in line at 11:48 am, it still took 20 minutes to order our food and pay the cashier. He messed up my plate somehow along the way and changed his tone to frustration. YUM! These guys should really should reconsider their name. I walked past this place a million times and never realized it was a Caribbean/Jamaican restaurant. The owners were very nice, the Roti was delicious, the mint lemonade was great. BUMMED they were out of patties. More patties please! They apparently have their own homemade scotch bonnet sauce that I missed out on. Edit: 9/11/14 So I'm dropping a star for the moment. They might be taking the Caribbean relaxed vibe thing a little too far. Yesterday (Wednesday) when I went in I was excited to see they were offering homemade Jamaica patties (chicken, beef and veggie) as part of their regular menu. I was told they were very popular and unfortunately they were sold out. OK, I said, how about tomorrow? The response was maybe they would have more next week. Say what? Not sure I totally understand why you would want to wait 6 days to put something so popular back in rotation, especially if you are making them in house. Also yesterday one thing I didn't see was any hot sauce on any of the tables or on the counter. In Jamaica/Trinidad it's common to see homemade (or at a minimum store-bought) scotch bonnet sauce on every table. Since I didn't see any I didn't even think about it. Then I noticed some of the reviews mentioned their famous homemade scotch bonnet sauce which they also sell by the bottle. So today I'm totally excited to go check out the hot sauce but I don't see any anywhere once again. I do see two big bottles behind the food window for sale ($5.50). I ask if they have any sauce to go with my sandwich and I'm told they are out. Totally out of sauce? I'm totally eyeballing the two bottles in front of me, maybe you could open one of them (though I didn't ask)? No such luck. No sauce for me. Finally I ask for a salad because I read the review of the peanut sauce dressing. Bring it on! Guess what, they're out. On top of which the salad looked suspiciously like Safeway iceberg/shredded carrot mix. However, I should say the owner eventually put a bit of water in the empty hot sauce bottle behind the counter and gave me a little diluted sauce, which was better than nothing and I appreciate the effort. Also the girl behind the counter managed to get about a tablespoon of leftover peanut sauce out of the bottle so I did get to taste it at least -- it was good. Today I also tried the cold hibiscus tea (which is labelled "Sorrel (hibiscus)" but sorrel is just Jamaican for hibiscus, so it is not the sorrel you might be thinking about. It was ok -- I would have preferred it more with a little sugar in it or as a version of the Jamaican Hibiscus Ginger punch. It was a bit one-dimensional and tart, but still ok. I think this place would benefit from better salads, maybe a little more "tropical" and higher-end than their current offerings (garden/caesar) and definitely get your hot sauce and patties in stock! read more

Being a regular here, I don't know why I haven't written a review. By FAR my favorite place to eat whether it's for breakfast or for lunch or just to gobble down food for the heck of it. Hands down the best breakfast you can get for under $5. Whether it's their hashbrown cup or their breakfast burritos... I am never disappointed. Their main menu is amazing as well. My personal favorite is their indian spice chicken and their oxtail. Their curry chicken and jerk chicken is always great. You usually can pick between rice and beans or their coconut rice. Yep. This is another 5-star place for me. I hate to be so generous, but I have yet to come across a bad experience with this place. First things first, the people who work here are real cool people. I've been to some places where they seem on edge because of the busy afternoon lunch rush, but these guys keep it cool and with a smile on their face. The owner (I keep forgetting to catch his name) has the chill and cool Islander vibe about him and whenever he's helping someone out, he'll always crack a joke and make you laugh. Good guy. The food here is real top notch. They have specials every day, for example, today was Chicken Curry.........delicious chicken curry. Their big thing here is their jerk chicken and like someone has already said in their review, this is the real deal. They also have other items, such as soups, salads, wraps, and sandwiches. I can't speak for any of the other items, but I'm sure they won't disappoint. I had the Indian Spiced Chicken sandwich and that was really good. They get really busy at about 1130-12 and when we got here around a little after 12 and we just caught the last bit of chicken curry. You know you've got a big hit when it sells out that fast. I contemplated whether or not I wanted the #2 or #3, the taco salad, but just thinking about the red peppers and a runny nose made my decision easy. I ordered the number 2 and immediately drove right through it. My eyes lit up with satisfaction, my hands started to shake, my nose began to drip, and my hair stood straight up on ends. I would've never guessed that this place would offer such a variety of breakfast and lunch options. The owner is very nice and his spin on the jerk burger is delicious! It isn't greasy and the burger is a pretty good size. If you like that type of spice, I would recommend trying the "beef patty" with the mango sauce also. It's like a big but flatter crispy dumpling with ground beef inside. They also have the chicken patty, which has shredded chicken and small chunks of potatoes inside. It's $3 and worth a try. I'm also a fan of their house soups, which are $3 also. Their daily specials are $7.50 with a fountain drink included. The jerk chicken salad is $6 and is pretty good too! They usually have the jerk chicken and other jerk stuff on Thursdays and Fridays. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who enjoys savory meals! read more

Wanted to break up the monotony of the standard sandwich/salad for my lunch break so ventured over to Cafe Connection and was pleasantly surprised. I ordered the Veggie Curry and the flavors are deeelish! The salad on the side is pretty standard, but to be able to get a drink, curry w/rice and a salad for under 8 bucks is a pretty sweet deal. This place gets 4 stars because the staff are uber pleasant and genuine. The friendly man at the cashier mentioned you can ask them to tone down or spice up your curry and the nice woman behind the counter was even offering samples and talking about the specialty cheese they use in the veggie curry. Definitely different from the standard, quick exchanges you tend to get in other local lunch spots. I will definitely be hitting up this place in the future :) read more

So it turns out my spicy issue was medical and it has been resolved. Based on this I felt it best to update with a fair review of Cafe Connection. #1 the staff is still amazing... great owners and people working for them :) #2 the food. I have had the chicken and cabbage stew and the eggplant curry (both a little bland) as well as 1/2 a Indian spiced chicken sandwich and small pumpkin soup. The sandwich was the star. Highly seasoned chicken pieces with tomato and onions heated on a french roll, add a little mixed greens and peanut sauce... lunch perfection. The soup was tasty but a bit sweet but then again it is pumpkin so no surprise. All and all a great downtown option without breaking the bank (1/2 sammy and soup = $7) read more
