Gold Rush Grille is a weekday breakfast and lunch spot in the California Secretary of State building in downtown Sacramento, CA. It's located on the second floor. The grille is open to everyone. If you're a government worker, you will need to show the front security your badge to gain entry. If you're a visitor, you can enter as well. Just sign in with the security. Since the grille is on the second floor, you can use the elevator or the stairs. The stairs curves a bit and can be a bit dizzying especially when your hands are full holding your food and looking down at the steps. The grille has an old school cafeteria look. They serve breakfast and lunch. It's stand in line at the grill counter to order grill hot items. They even have lunch special of the day which is another line to order. There are premade salads (chicken caeser, chef, buffalo chicken, Cobb, Asian chicken) and a plethora of drinks in the cold case; chips, and snacks. They have self serve hot coffee. Pricing is the cheapest around that area. The breakfast items are solid. The salads are pretty good, fresh ingredients. Not Michelin cuisine but solid diner type fare. After you get your food, then you get in line with the cashier to pay. There is one cashier, and two sides to the line. The cashier alternates sides. They have a dining area with window views looking onto 12th street and outdoor access with a view to the their next door neighbor, California Museum's outdoor plaza. read more

This spot surprised me! My state coworkers have talked about coming here for a while, and we finally did. It was my first time and I was impressed. I ordered the Chicken BLTA Wrap and got it without tomatoes. It also came with fries. It was only $9.99, what a steal for being in downtown! The food was also very tasty and loved the large portions! This place was fast, cheap, and yum! They also have Coke Zero on the fountain so I actually got a drink today. On Tuesdays they have a salad special, think chipotle but salad with all of the fixings, for $10! I got the crispy chicken wrap and fries, also $10, and my friend got the patty melt with garlic fries. Def upgrade to garlic!! There is a large seating area with plenty of room to rest and eat. This place has been one of my favorite places to get lunch! When you walk in, it looks like a cafeteria but don't let that fool you because the food is SO good at such a great price. You can easily be full with less than $10. On days I just want a snack I get their soups of the day for $4. There is also a ton of seats if you want to sit down and enjoy your lunch. You do have to go up to the second floor to get to the restaurant and the security guard check badges. I am not a state employee but I work around the area and I've never had an issue getting to the restaurant. As long as you're wearing a badge they'll let you in. read more

So I usually go to LaBou when at work but decided to stop here for lunch as people have been bragging about the cafe. I went inside the building and noted it's secure. Must show security your state badge for access and if not a state employee you can sign the visitor log. Walked into the cafe and was a bit lost lol. I looked at the menu to find something to eat. I learned the salads are in the refrigerator and are fresh. Cash registers are in the middle toward the exit area. Staff were friendly and guided me because I was confused lol. My salad was sooo affordable and way cheaper than LaBou. I went back to my building to eat but you can eat in the cafeteria. They have a lot of other items and specials too, I've seen my coworker bring back a HUGE breakfast burrito once for $6 or $7. I've also tried their patty melt and fries.. not the best but was decent. Definitely affordable cafeteria food. The workers are also nice and quick too. There is also a lot of indoor seating here and I've notice it's not ever that busy around 1pm. Both made well and the most importantly it was fairly cheap. Most lunch items were around $6-$7 for a full size meal..now that's what I call a deal! Tip: Come before noon if you want to beat the lunch crowd (depending on the day of course)..some days the line can get long. They have been closed for the last 2 years ((looking at you, Mr. 1 star review)), but they managed to stay in business with their catering. They announced on their website that the will be opening again in August at some point but they don't know when. Gold Rush Grille (GRG) is basically a breakfast/lunch cafeteria in the Secretary of State (SOS) building a block from the Capitol. It's open to the public, but you have to present a badge to get inside. Once you show a valid ID, walk up the grand stairway to the western style fond and you'll likely see state workers waiting in line for classic American options, a few Mexican items, and some daily specials. They have burgers, soups and salads, wraps, and daily specials range from fish and chips to bbq ribs. The wraps are pretty good- the BBQ chicken features grilled chicken and is generous with sauce. The burgers are slightly overpriced but at least better quality than McDonald's. Most of the food is pretty average, but I'm here almost every week and have to give a shout-out for their Salmon salad Friday's! Their salmon is grilled, well-seasoned, and pairs perfectly with a pineapple salsa that adds freshness and acidity. I only wish they gave more greens, but the salmon is really really good. The next best things I've had are a creamy potato soup and the BBQ chicken wrap, and honestly everything else is pretty average. read more

This place is located inside the CA Secretary of State so you will need to have some kind of picture identification to get in. The grille is on the second floor. I only go here for their salmon salad with pineapple salsa on Fridays! It's $8.29! Can't beat that price downtown and it's actually VERY DELICIOUS. It's a very light and refreshing lunch. I always ask for them to put my pineapple salsa in a container because I have to walk 0.85 miles to get back to work. This prevents my salad from getting soggy. The dressing is a light honey mustard and it's very satisfying and they give you a lot of dressing. I probably only use about a quarter of it. I wish they gave me more spring mix lettuce. Lines are usually not bad but I usually go around 11:45 am. They have a lot of seating as well and a couple of tables outside on the balcony. You grab your food item then you head to the cashier to pay for your food. Easy peasy. I've also heard great reviews about their potato soup but I haven't tried it yet. read more

The Gold Rush Grille is located on the second floor of the Secretary of State Building, 1500 11th Street. You must show ID to the guard on entering the building. I eat there once a month for lunch for a book club meeting. There is plenty of seating, some with a view of the Capitol, prices are reasonable, and the location is great. There is a light rail stop right by the door for our lucky retired members. We meet at 1 p.m. which is after the rush but unfortunately means they are often out of many food items. Made to order items are ordered at the counter (pick up a menu on the counter as only specials are written on the blackboard). Service is extremely slow so the cooler of pre-made salads and wraps along the wall saves quite a lot of time. If your favorite salad has run out in the refrigerated section they will make one fresh for you, just be prepared for a wait. I really enjoy the Southwest Chicken Salad. It is composed of mixed spring greens (no plain iceberg here), a grilled sliced chicken breast, black bean corn salsa, tomato salsa, a sliced egg and tortilla strips with a delicious chipotle ranch dressing served in a separate container. Some days the dressing is spicier than others. I've also tried the Smoked Turkey Wrap. It consists of smoked turkey, avocado, red onion, bacon (I don't eat bacon so they willingly made me one without), lettuce, tomato, cheddar cheese and cream cheese in a flour tortilla. It is served with a mixed green salad with dressing of your choice. I think I would have liked the combination of flavors better if the turkey was not smoked but maybe it was the bacon that brings it all together. A book club member often orders the Philly Cheese Steak sandwich. Boy, does it look good. Also very popular is the chicken quesadilla though once a member said hers came missing the chicken. I've gone a few times on my lunch break since I work nearby and I want to like it because it's cheap and they have lots of options but they always get my order wrong. Part of the problem is they try to just "remember" all the things you say instead of writing it down. They only wrote down my sandwich order once and they still got it wrong. I was really excited to try their cajun cheese fries and they told me they were out of cajun ones and could make me some regular cheese fries and I said yes. He put a little shredded cheese on them, flipped them once or twice on the grill and put it in and the cheese wasn't melty at all. I just had some shredded cheese fall off of soggy, flavorless fries. How are those cheese fries? I expect either more of some regular cheese or like some cheese sauce instead like most places making cheese fries. Gold Rush Grille is close to my work so I come here a lot (usually for breakfast). If you come in with the expectation that Gold Rush Grille is some fine dining restaurant, you will be disappointed. It really is more of a food cafeteria that has convenience of location on it's side. The eating area decor feels like it is trying to be 3 different things at once and feels dated. They play the same 6 pop country songs on loop all day which can get jarring if you are a regular. Yet, despite that, I eat here usually once a day. Why? They let you call your order in ahead of time (which is amazing in the morning when you're short on time) and the cook always greet you with a smile when you come to pick it up. If you're running on a tight schedule and you order in person, expect a 10-25 minute wait. The workers are nice and the food tastes decent to good. This is not a high brow culinary experience but also it's not bad. I don't think I would ever go out of my way to eat at Gold Rush Grille if I didn't work so close by. If you work/live near here, it's a good option. If you don't, it's likely not worth the headache of parking in the area. If you keep these expectations in mind, Gold Rush Grille will serve you fine. Four stars for a good little deli shop in the Secretary of State building. Finding it is half the battle but, in short and not meaning to violate any security protocols, walk in, show your ID, go up the stairs and there you go! They have the typical menu items: burgers, breakfast items, daily specials. I got a philly cheesesteak wrap which was rather drippy but passable. The fries were good and better than the wrap. That less than stellar experience aside, I'll return to try one of their staples. I haven't had a breakfast burrito yet in downtown Sac, so I might make the trip for that.
