Cafe d'Avignon is a fun bakery and sandwich shop in Essex Market. I tried both the mortadella and the roast beef sandwiches for lunch, and they were fantastic--fresh, flavorful, and satisfying. The bread used in these was particularly outstanding- similar to a focaccia. The mortadella reminded me a bit of salami, which I really enjoyed. The staff was friendly and attentive, making the whole experience even better. I sat outside in the shady seating area, which was peaceful and relaxing. The scone is delish even though I look and salivate over all the other pastries. Invariably, I choose this one. Paired with a hot skim cappuccino, this makes for a lovely afternoon break. Flaky, tender, with a slight chew - perfect. The only problem is that I could eat two! I did see a tart with coconut and pineapple with flecks of slivered almonds that caught my eye. It is available every day so that is on my list for next time. The ladies who work here are nice. Sorry no pics! That's how good my sando was. On a recent visit I had the prosciutto and mozzarella on focaccia. It was so deelish. The fresh pesto spread really set this sandwich off. First had Cafe d'avignon bread when I used to buy it from whole foods so I knew it would be pretty good. This photo is from the first time I went but have since been numerous times as I spend a lot of time in the LES. Almond croissant was solid but it wasn't as buttery/flaky as I would have liked. Coffee was mid-- if you're already at Essex Market would try porto coffee shop just around the corner. If you like the loaves at whole foods they also sell a bunch of specialty ones in the cafes which you can have sliced for you. The one with kalamata olives goes great with some feta eggs! read more

The biggest hidden gem inside Essex Market comes in form of the amazing bakery that is Cafe d'Avignon. Their breads are consistently excellent and addictive. Between the amazing sourdough seeded loaf to the baguettes, there is a crispy and crunchy winner at every turn with a soft and fluffy interior. The quiches are criminally underrated as well. My friend and I stopped by Cafe d'Avignon in Essex Market for a quick lunch when we were exploring in the Lower East Side a few weeks ago, and it was a great stop for a quick little lunch. I grabbed their Salami pickle sandwich (salami, cheese, pickles, and Dijon mustard) - super simple and delicious. A great lunch on the go. My friend grabbed that and a croissant. Service was good, and it was such a fast option considering we didn't order anything that needed prep or heating at all. It was perfect since it allowed us to take our lunch on the go - we continued to walk around the LES for a while and then finished up in Bryant Park a little bit later since we had a matinee show. First time in Essex Market! Super cool love me a little market with European vibes. Arrived just a couple minutes after opening and there were 4 customers waiting for orders already! Got a country bacon & egg bun and a slice of banana bread. The sammie was surprisingly good for a brekkie sammie, soft eggs not overcooked and tasty crisp bacon, poppy seed roll brought it all together. Kinda pricey though especially for a bfast sammie. Good tea, but such a frustrating experience this time around. I've been taking quite a few online courses this semester, so I thought I'd head to Essex Market bright and early, grab a coffee or tea at Cafe d'Avignon, and make my way upstairs to get some work done and be productive. While I usually drink cold drinks, even in the winter, I figured I'd change things up for once, and ordered a hot earl grey tea. I went upstairs, settled down, and took a picture (a few pictures, really) before opening the lid and taking a sip. And then from there, it all went south. The cup would not stop leaking!! When I first noticed the light water ring on the table, I ignored it, passing it off as condensation from when I first opened the lid. So, I put a few napkins under the cup and continued with my work, but when the napkins only got wetter, I knew something was wrong. I picked up the cup and noticed tea was dripping from the seam... not even from the top of the cup seam, near the lid, but rather at the very bottom. And at a rate of one drop every two seconds... excuse me?? I ended up only drinking a few sips before throwing the rest away. Very disappointed and still so confused by the entirety of it all -- never had this happen before. read more

Cafe D'Avignon, located at the Essex Market, has a lot to offer from fresh baked breads to mini sandwiches to pastries along with some great coffee. We went for the Summer Peach Bread Pudding and it sounds just as amazing as it tasted and with just the right amount of sweetness. We received a generous portion and, somehow, scarfed it all down in one sitting. The side of Creme Anglaise, however, wasn't really needed since it tasted very similar to the bread pudding. We also ordered both a latte and a cold brew. The latte was very bold and rich and, by far, my favorite out of the two coffees. Later on, we returned for some fresh Ciabatta Bread to bring home. We had the ciabatta as part of our breakfast the following morning. All I can say is wow. Sooo.. gooood. All of the breads here look amazing and fresh. I'd like to try them all. read more

There are so many different styles of bread on display, it can make you dizzy from the choices. Semolina, seeded, pullman, french, round, the choices are plentiful. I need a good Italian bread for dinner. The counterperson was a nice guy. He said, I have the perfect Italian bread for you but its not fresh from today. I stopped by here to pick up a baguette. This is a bakery located in Essex Market. Everything looked fresh, and the baguette was $3.75. I think the price is reasonable! I got it yesterday and ate some yesterday, today, and I still have some bread left for tomorrow too. It's a delicious baguette! I took off one star because it was confusing to purchase. There wasn't a clear line and the customers weren't sure where the start or end of the line was. There should be more organization so it's clear where people line up instead of an ambiguous crowd. read more

I loved some of their other stuff much more. Sugar croissant? I can't remember the proper name but this is like crack and worth breaking my healthy eating streak! Get this! Whatever it is, get it! Cranberry (?) cookie: this was so good also. It reminds me of a sweet shortbread cookie. I loved it. Black and white croissant: it supposedly has coconut, but I couldn't taste it. There are two locations for this business. I like the one in Essex Market a lot. I haven't been to the one in Downtown Brooklyn yet. The reason I really do like this place is due to the Kouign Amann the cousin to the Croissant. For me, this can be hard to find outside of Paris but it's one of my favorites on a Sunday. Like in Paris you can get a Kouign Amann in different flavors but I do love the original. So if you are in the LES stop by and try this place out, I do recommend it highly. read more

So this cafe is adjacent to quite a few hotels in the flower district, and so is convenient for picking up a quick breakfast when heading out in the morning. The espresso machine is this rich copper low-slung beauty, and the cafe is decorated really nicely. It was busy on a weekday morning at 9am, with folks chatting in pairs, and a few folks on laptops pecking at some emails. The cappuccino was excellent, with good wet foam just like I like it, and the milk was not too sweet (add sugar if you need it). I went two days in a row, and had both a croissant, and a blueberry scone. The croissant was good -- not like what you'd get in Paris, but solid for NYC (3.5 out of 5?). It was quite buttery, so grab a napkin. The blueberry scone was better, but again not the absolute best (maybe 4 out of 5). I'd definitely have the blueberry scone again and be just fine, although I'm sure I might experiment elsewhere around town as well. Overall, the ambiance and location are really great, which pushed me to a 5-star instead of 4. read more
