Their whole wheat bread is a national treasure! I get so excited about it each time. My family loves it as well. After I showed them, they went there nearly every day during their NYC visit. This place has an assortment of many unique and delicious baked goods. I had a Black and White Croissant, which is a chocolate croissant with coconut cream filling and coconut flakes on top. It was out of sight! The chocolate flavor paired perfectly with the coconut cream filling. It was a unique item which did not disappoint. Truly an eclectic mix: French pastry, but made with rich chocolate, and island style coconut cream filling and flakes. Not an item you find just anywhere. I also had a cranberry-pecan cookie. Pain D'Avignon is a hidden gem (literally, it's buried at the very back of the Essex Street Market, behind the greengrocer) whose products are that much sweeter for having to seek them out. They have a small selection of pastries, including comparatively hard-to-find kouign-amann (a kind of Breton puff pastry, stuffed with sugar), as well as loafs of bread and cookies. Everything they have is worth eating; the cookies are inventive and tasty, and the breads have beautifully crusty exteriors, with tender insides. I always make sure to come here for breakfast when I'm in the city, and their products have been known to make the trip back home to the midwest with me, as well. read more

Hand me some butter and I'm moving in. As much as I love my fancy foods, I could totally live off (good) bread. Pain D'Avignon is a bread mecca. Any kind of bread you want, they probably have it. I still can't give 5 stars just cause it's pricey and there's a $10 card minimum. But gosh darn is this bread good! Lately, I've had the chocolate croissant, choco-hazelnut croissant, and the pistachio-chocolate roll thingy that can't be called a croissant (see Sonia N.'s photo), and it's that latter one that has me dreaming of bread in my sleep and handing over my hard-earned $4.50 every week now. On a different note, I don't quite recommend the iced coffee because the last time I ordered it, I was a little unimpressed that it came out of a cooler in their tiny fridge. Stick with the hot coffee/espresso drinks, eat bread, pay cash, and you will be a happy customer! read more

The baguette picholine is what other olive breads want to be when they grow up. Not a lot of visible olive bits yet the flavor permeates... sheer mastery. Team it up with a couple cheeses from the cheesemonger down the aisle in this amazing market and you are good to go. Also had a ciabatta and the levain (I believe they call it country french). Solid loaves though not as good as the picholine. Prices are very reasonable for the quality... a nice plus that just makes me want to buy more bread! read more

They definitely live up to their name - pain . The bread is amazing - perfectly buttery and fluffy. I got the ham gruyere croissant and the cheesy brioche. The croissant was the highlight - the ham was a bit lacking in taste and quality compared to others I've tried but the cheese and croissant part was so good. Everything looked good, but nothing we tried tasted great. The pain au chocolate wasn't crispy (almost soggy), and the bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich was given to us cold and without bacon, so we just returned it. Love this cafe although it's expensive, it's worth it to me. I'd rather spend money at an amazing coffee shop with amazing coffee, food, bread, and pastries in a relaxing atmosphere with friendly, professional baristas than at a Starbucks where the baristas aren't nearly as friendly, barely look you in the eye, and sometimes don't get your order right. Too expensive to be messing up orders and not even so much as greet you. Anyways, boycotting Starbucks in favor of this place :) read more

It was not easy to find and finally I found it was inside Essex market! The kouign amann was really big, super chewy with the caramel on one side. I love it. There was also a salty version in cheese but I did not have a chance to try!! Probably next time when I am in NYC!! read more

Holy hell... I cannot believe I'm the first person to review this bakery! You can thank me later. Luckily, a friend of mine recommended subscribing to Tasting Table's daily emails, which give tidbits about the NY dining scene. Today, their spotlight was on Pain D'Avignon, it sounded intriguing, and off I went. Be warned: this isn't really a free-standing store. It's within the Essex Street Market, which is a whole other review in and of itself. But if you wander through the randomosity that is Essex Market, you will stumble across a bakery outlet called Pain D'Avignon. The bread and other baked goods are made elsewhere (look at their website for all the fancy details I'm too lazy/busy to list). Actually, where it's made is of no consequence once you take a bite of whatever deliciousness you wind up buying. I could talk about the natural yeast process, the hours upon hours it takes to make such baked pieces of heaven, or the history of Pain D'Avignon... instead, I will just say one word: SUBLIME! As a natural foodie (pig), I bought nearly one of everything; market research, of course. Luckily, things come in small sizes for people like me. I tried the whole grain roll, cranberry walnut roll (f-n' life changing), picholine baby roll, brioche (touted as the best brioche ever by Tasting Table), and the mini baguette. I didn't looove the brioche, but that just makes me pretty positive that brioche isn't my gig. What I wanted to propose to and make babies with was the baguette. Oh, the baguette. Not since France have I had such baguette-induced ecstasy. The crust is ridiculously perfect in its crunchiness, that "je ne sais quoi" that all Parisian baguettes have was present, and it was sublimely fresh. If it had been hot out of the oven... let's just say I would have made out with it in public. This is inappropriately good bread. Please come and try Pain D'Avignon. I'm a bread snob- a woman who chooses her carbs VERY wisely (like, I'll spit em out if they don't make the grade), and I was extremely impressed. Bouncing them up to 5 stars - not only are the baguettes superb, the ciabatta is a work of art. Prices are fair. That large work of art costs $3.50. They even have an espresso machine. And I just conducted my business there today entirely in French. That's right. French is spoken there as well. What more could one expect from a place named Pain D'Avignon? Nothing. I'll miss and cry for the bread I found in this place!! It's been sooo long since I've tried this texture and mix of grains and all made into a perfect small size and not those huge pieces of bread. I spent my last trip to New York trying to visit as many bakeries as I could and I can safely say, Pain D'Avignon has the most beautiful breads in New York. Walking into the store, I almost mistook it for an art gallery. The attention to the shaping and scoring on their breads is breathtaking. I'm in the midst of working towards a bread baking certificate. which may explain my enthusiasm. The store front holds a tiny nook of the Lower East Side market. It's black interior and walls of breads make up for the lacking of square footage since they are loud enough to get attention by passerby's. The ladies working were very friendly and let me spend some time staring at the breads answering any questions I had. They probably thought I was very strange. I tried their brioche, which had a gorgeous dark golden hue. It was moist and dense but not overwhelming in that typical buttery flavor. They make their breads off site at their bakery. This is their only retail location. If you're looking for a bread to show off at your next party, or want a taste of France Pain D'Avignon is the place. read more

Pain D'Avignon, the Long Island City bakery that supplies bread to some of the best restaurants in the city, recently opened up an outpost at the Essex Street Market. I was first introduced to this bakery's incredible bread at the Amsterdam Market at the South Street Seaport last year. (The Amsterdam Market is a cool thing to do in the city. Check it out if you haven't been there before.) Let me start with a disclaimer: I do not like bread. I don't know why, but it's never held an appeal to me until I was introduced to Pain D'Avignon's cranberry-pecan bread. This bread is a flavor explosion in your mouth. It's sweet, but not sugary sweet. It tastes great plain or toasted. I cannot rave enough about how great this bread is. I want to be a spokesperson for this bread. Seriously. At the Essex Street Market location, you can buy the cranberry-pecan bread as a boule or a small loaf. Buy the boule--you'll finish it within 12 hours of buying it. Pain D'Avignon also makes an olive bread that is really tasty. It would be the perfect companion to Italian or Greek food. The French bread deserves high marks too. But I am all about that great cranberry-pecan bread. Credit cards accepted. $10 minimum. read more

I rarely come here but when I do I buy a snack or two to enjoy on the rest of my market trip. I've never been wowed, but the breads were decent. It's been a while (at least a year) and since I was in the neighborhood I thought I'd stop by to buy some bread here and cheese next door at Formaggio's. There is generally a long line outside the bread shop, and one person behind the counter (it's tiny!). Long story short, the two stars are for the breads in the past, zero stars for the service. When it was my turn to order, a woman barged in from the side who was apparently a regular and rudely spoke over me to inquire if they had something. Imagine my surprise when the girl behind the counter actually served her first as I am standing there with my jaw on the floor. No apologies. After I asked 2 questions while she acted annoyed (at this point there was only one person behind me and I wanted to hurry up) I felt I was bothering the girl who gave me the "f*ck you" smile. Needless to say I went next door and bought bread at Formaggio's who were only too happy to accept credit cards, and did not emphasize how expensive everything was, unlike here. read more

My fellow Americans, let's face it: we don't exactly have the most decorated history when it comes to making bread. Whether it be the ubiquitous Wonder Bread, a medium which so many of us, at some point in our lives, mistook for the genus "bread," or the I-don't-know-what-obscure-dry-ingredient-you-decided-to-grind-up-into-flour-but-it-strikes-me-as-precisely-silly-and-vain bread, guaranteed to be gluten-free so that those afflicted with Celiac disease (a euphemism for a gluten allergy, or weakness) can still "enjoy" one of the great joys of civilization. Between these two extreme phenomena, is an abyss, inside of which flavor and texture defer to nutrition, gustatory complexity defers to sesquipedalian ingredients, as though us mortals consumed only macronutrients and were indifferent to anything else. Happily, the Pinocchio of American bread is finally becoming less woody and more real, and beginning to climb out of the aforementioned abyss. Pain D'Avignon is corroboration manifest: despite its name being a little bit snooty (and the capital "D" in "D'Avignon" makes me cringe, an aesthetic monstrosity--loss of a star), PDA boasts of some REALLY solid bread. And I'm not talking about the olive fougasses, or the pain aux raisins, ou bien, le pain chocolat; I think that one problem with the contemporary American understanding of bread quality is that we often judge bread (and pizza, for that matter) by the added decorations and not by the essential substance. If you want to know the quality of a bakery, look no further than the humble baguette. If they can do a baguette REALLY well, chances are the rest of their breads will follow suit. That being said, PDA has a really great baguette. Beautifully scored and golden, bending slightly upwards at the ends like a great baguette should do, each one individualized by its own idiosyncrasies; the visual sensation is almost pornographic. And for flavor: it's really amazing what this place can do with flour, water, yeast and salt. A great, crunch crust that yields under easy pressure to a soft, chewy-melty interior. The balance is genius, something difficult to describe more fully because of its simplicity, so you'll have to either take my word for it, or, better yet, give it a try yourself. The breads with more frills, as the ones described above, are also really great, and very fairly priced. The Pane Francese, while simple, is really superb, and their whole grain breads really capture the depth of flavor provided by the actual whole grain. I will say that I have to dock a star because of the quality of the croissants, as indicated by other Yelpers. While America is certainly coming out of the Dark Ages of Bread, we are still rubbing stones together to try to make croissants. Will someone ever come to save us? Perhaps, but it's sadly not PDA. In any case, you should definitely give a visit to PDA. Really cute shop with great breads, and it also means that you'll be supporting the Essex St. Market! Allez, viens! read more

Their mini 7 grain loaf is so delicious that 1. I ate the last half of it right now by noon, when I meant to save that half for a snack eaten one slice at a time throughout the entire day. 2.
