I came to this coffee shop every weekday morning. After tried here constantly for a month, I wrote this review. First, I am a cafe grumpy fan for years. Their coffee is stronger than other coffee shops and I like it very much. Their coffee beans heartbreaker is very good and strong but a little pricey $17 a bag. I recommend the latte ($5) of cafe grumpy. Mocha is not that strong. Don't recommend to add oat milk in cafe grumpy. I don't think their coffee beans goes well with oat milk. Second, it's about the baristas. Usually the baristas are two tall thin guys in this grand central location and they make better latte than the others in the shop. They make better latte art and always fill the whole cup. The latte made by the big guy and the girl is more watery. The female barista usually only fills 80% of the cup. Not sure if we can choose barista in the coffee shop. If you're lucky your coffee is made by these two thin guys, it's usually very good quality. However, since we still paid $5 for a latte I expect the quality to be exactly the same everyday to make my morning better. Last, it's about the store. Sometimes there's a very long line in the morning rush hour but the line usually went very quick. It's average around 5 minutes for me to get a latte to go. Was on vacation in NYC and found this gem when I couldn't find any coffee shops open near me on the weekend. You'd be surprised how many close on the weekends. Anyways, Grumpy's Coffee was there to safe the day! Also conveniently located in grand central station. I got the Honey Oat Latte Iced where you can definitely taste the honey notes. My boyfriend got the vanilla iced latte with oat milk and his also tasted super creamy. Loved the location and just simple drinks that still tasted good. Located just at the Lexington Avenue entrance into Grand Central. Minimal decor with no seating. A very simple menu with the classic coffee options such as cappuccino, cold brew, or lattes. Baristas are very knowledgeable and they respect coffee. I overheard someone trying to order an iced flat white (not sure why?). The barista suggested something else instead. I appreciate that they are there to show appreciation, love, and passion for coffee; not for your money. During this sunny week, I enjoyed an Iced Soy Latte and just plain Cold Brew. Iced Soy Latte was very rich in flavor and every ingredient was very well blended together. I normally prefer just black coffee if I am not desiring any craft coffee drinks. Cold Brew was very refreshing and very bold. It was a preferred drink to freshen up after a long day of work. Although, I really enjoy the coffee here; I personally think people are being too redundant in saying that it's better Starbucks...you don't say? Roasted: I fell in love with cafe grumpy last time I was here but went to the one in Brooklyn. This one is in Manhattan and although the latte was good - my overall experience was nothing like the other one. Easy to find on Lexington Ave at the bottom of the Hilton. Small cafe with no tables just bench seating which works for the area. Team was friendly enough for an early Saturday morning but got just the basics. Wasn't offered a for here mug and they didn't have any sugar free options. Latte overall was tasty - a bit hot but the foam was nice and creamy. I wish this was as good as I remembered. Unroasted: this is a very small coffee shop at grand central station. The staff was okay. They didn't greet you as you come in and didn't offer mugs to stay. Cafe grumpy was a cute but small Cafe that I walked past and stumbled into just by chance. The ambiance is cute and warm - however, employees there fit in with the name of the place and came across...well, grumpy. I didn't get the best service here during my NY trip. The cafe itself is busy though and I waited around for a seat but none were looking to open up anytime soon so I ended up leaving. The coffee was also mediocre, in my opinion. Good place for a quick stop at Grand Central. We went after dinner and they had pour - over "happy hour" which meant that certain blends were almost half the price of what you would have paid in the morning. There are some bar seats along the store windows and that is it, so it is not good for groups. We ordered a latte and two pour-overs: one blend called La Bolsa from Guatemala, which was described as "chocolatey" and an Ethiopian blend which was described as "super fruity". I had the Ethiopian, which was super fruity as promised-- it was as sour as an injera. I would not pick it for dessert coffee but it might be a cool kick in the morning for those who love acidity. The staff was very nice. They took time into explaining and recommending the blends and when I realized that my friend and I ordered the same blends and asked to change it, they did so with no problems. I first came across Cafe Grumpy when traveling through Grand Central every day for work, but it wasn't until a colleague recommended the place that I decided to pay a visit. By far, one of my favorite parts of Cafe Grumpy is the brand. The grumpy face on the signage, cups and merchandise is so iconic and so fitting of someone who has yet to have their morning cup of joe. But does the coffee live up to the hype? The answer is mostly yes, but the prices here are a bit steep for what you get. By far, my favorite order at Cafe Grumpy (so far) is the Gatuyaini, a Kenyan press coffee with tasting notes that include white grape, candied lemon peel, crême brulée, and hibiscus. The coffee is rich and full of flavor. If you prefer to drink your coffee black, you'll find this option will definitely fit the bill, although at a price of $5 for a small cup, it's a hefty price to swallow. That being said, it is very delicious and certainly full of caffeine (even the small cup size will wake you up). The other items I've tried here include Cafe Grumpy's hot coffee, iced coffee and a couple of pastries (blueberry scone and blueberry muffin). The pastries are quite good (and quite large). The hot coffee and iced coffee are also very good, but I wouldn't say they're much better than what you'd find at similar coffee bars across the city. The coffee flavor is dark but rich (no burned taste), and the price is again a bit more than you'd pay elsewhere, even compared to Starbucks. The shop itself is also fairly small, so seating is hard to come by, but since most people take their coffee to go, there's usually a seat or two available. Also, the service here is great! The staff moves quickly, so even a line out the door (which is common during the morning rush) won't take longer than 5 minutes. I've also found that most of the staff here is quite the opposite of grumpy, so don't let that name fool you. Overall, if you decide to venture this way, stop by for the press coffee (if you're wanting to try something great for a slightly pricy cup of joe) or even the house blend. This is my third Cafe Grumpy, and I think my favorite one out of the three. For some reason, I enjoyed the feeling of spending myself in the middle of a rushed environment while am able to enjoy something more relaxing; so this one at the corner of Grand Central perfectly matches my criteria. Also loved the Grumpy facial expression, sort of expressing my inner self a lot of the times. Grumpy beans are quite solid - you definitely want to sit down and sip a cup before work. I ordered an iced espresso with a splash oat milk. It seems to me that good tippers ought to get good service. Excellent tipping should begat excellent service. So I have been tipping a dollar every morning, which is a good tip in my opinion, for coffee and a breakfast item. I go there the other day and I explain that I don't have my wallet but I'll pay later on my way out or tomorrow. No can't do it was the response. So guess what ladies. No more good tips from me, except for one: it's a good idea to know what the difference is between red rules, that must never be broken, and blue rules, which allows for a little leeway. Yesterday I stopped Cafe Grumpy's Grand Central Station location for an espresso. I ordered the single origin Kenya. The barista pulled the first shot, and poured it down the sink. He made an adjustment, pulled the second, and it also went down the sink. Another adjustment another shot, this one, he tasted. Then he pulled the shot that he served me. It was amazing! I thanked him and the other baristas. The shop was crowded, there was a line forming, people wanted their caffeination. However, this gentleman took the time to make adjustments to the grind and whatever other variables were in play. Just so he could serve a delicious drink. He really exemplified professionalism. So often people jump on poor service and rant about it (I hate to admit, I do it as well). Today, I just want to share a great experience. read more

When Joe left Grand Central Terminal, it left a hole in my heart; I no longer had my go-to non-Starbucks spot to go before catching a train up to Connecticut! However, Cafe Grumpy - damn be damned! - has left me quite happy! Accessible both from Lexington Avenue and inside of Grand Central, I am happy to have a quick and easy option for a pre-train iced tea and snack. I go for their Jasmine Citrus Iced Tea 9 times out of 10, but they also have a great array of quick bites, breakfast pastries, coffees (...duh...), teas, and specialty drinks, such as matcha and turmeric-based drinks. The service is wicked speedy, even when the line starts to pour out into the hallway of the terminal. That's good for commuters and people that work in the vicinity; as someone that will be transferring to a new office in Midtown East come November, I have a feeling I'll be a usual customer at this location soon enough! Cafe Grumpy should be cafe happy! I've only been here a few times but I really like it. Service is efficient and they have a frequent purchase card. Tried the jalapeño cheddar biscuit today and it was amazing. Texture was perfect not crumbly and it tasted homemade. The jalapeño was spicy and did not taste canned. Quite filing. Their cold brew coffee. Enough said. Hands down the BEST coffee I've ever had. I'm usually a chicken when it comes to drinking coffee and I like adding milk and sugar to it. Heck, I never drink black coffee!! But Cafe Grumpy? No sugar and no milk needed. The cold brew is so smooth and doesn't have that sour aftertaste that I absolutely despise. It's got that great coffee aroma and it's even refreshing on a hot summer day. My boss recommended this place and everyday, we interns crave it. Basically, Cafe Grumpy changed the way I view coffee and it's definitely highly recommended by me. The staff is really nice and they also offer other options if cold brew isn't your thing! This is cafe Grumpy's grand central location. They can be quite crowded and with no where to sit. It's not a great place to relax. Short term people watching, maybe. They have some great creative coffees though. The marshmallow latte is awesome- made with real homemade vanilla, brown sugar, smoked sea salt, and vegan marshmallows. If you like sweet coffee, this is a delight. Coffee is made on Bright orange Synesso machines and roasted darker. Other offerings(along with the usual coffee suspects) include a turmeric elixir (not coffee, but served with choice of regular, almond or oat milk). Selection of baked goods is above average, with decent olive oil citrus bundt cake (yeah it's good), lemon loaf, various muffins, peanut butter cookies, and croissants. read more

This morning I went to get a drink and a muffin At the Cafe Grumpy location in Grand Central. I asked what type of muffin was sitting next to the banana walnut muffin in the display case because it looked like a different flavor. The man at the register became shockingly rude when I asked for clarification a second time because I wanted to make sure we were talking about the same row of muffins Because it wasn't clear to me from what he was saying. He was dismissive and obnoxious with absolutely no qualms about his tone. I'm wondering how he gets away with it. Maybe his parents own the location and that's how his attitude is left unchecked but the experience was so awful and surprising that I was just speechless. He has dirty blond shoulder length hair, glasses, is tall, skinny, and may be in his 20s. I don't plan to return and do not recommend this location. I cannot believe someone would speak to a customer that way. Yay I get to be the first review (well two other people wrote ones by the time I posted grr) of the new grumpy in grand central. In a massive upgrade of coffee joints in gct, char bucks was jettisoned out of the south Lexington passage, and hence the new locale of cafe grumpy. Grumpy is my absolute favorite "third wave" coffee chain in NYC. Coffee is artisanal, and among the most smooth espressos/ cappuccinos in the city. The owners travel around the world to source small batch beans, and beans are subsequently roasted at their plant in greenpointe (girls show on hbo). The new grumpy is a grab and go locale much like the art of joe. But once this place is discovered, expect longish lines and wait times depending on what you are getting (espresso/ single pour coffee take a while vs a drop coffee). There's no seating and I'd say the flow of this location is less than ideal given the space and somewhat long and narrow. That being said, it's a little sacrifice for one of the best java joints in all of NYC. If you are really there to hang out, wander around gct. Jacques Torres now has a store across the way and there are some other amazing culinary joints in gct (grand central market, olive oil co etc!). read more

Let get grumpy, but leave happy. Starbucks have left this location for reasons unknown, but Café Grumpy picked up a gem. This place is very affordable and service is top notch. They prepared my drink with care and hand it over with a smile. How can still stay grumpy? Impossible! Ohhhhh, I forgot to mention, they have seats to enjoy your treats. Recommendation: The cups are so cool that you want to drink like you in England, but I recommend you to get your drink in a throw away cup. Why? The portion are smaller if you plan to use these glass cups. The cakes are so addictive, that I need to look away to be strict with my diet. Wait! If you see the strawberry big & ginger slices, you must buy a slice for $3.50. It is my favorite. This is the only reason to cheat. Something you must realize about their baked goods, the bakers tend to have fun with the mixing bowl. Today would be one thing and tomorrow would be a different exotic baked good.
