They prepared my drink with care and hand it over with a smile. How can still stay grumpy? Impossible! Ohhhhh, I forgot to mention, they have seats to enjoy your treats. Recommendation: The cups are so cool that you want to drink like you in England, but I recommend you to get your drink in a throw away cup. Why? The portion are smaller if you plan to use these glass cups. The cakes are so addictive, that I need to look away to be strict with my diet. Wait! If you see the strawberry big & ginger slices, you must buy a slice for $3.50. It is my favorite. This is the only reason to cheat. Something you must realize about their baked goods, the bakers tend to have fun with the mixing bowl. Today would be one thing and tomorrow would be a different exotic baked good. I finally made it to Cafe Grumpy, a place that is notorious in my flatiron office for great coffee for those that commute into the city. I went on a Saturday at 11:30 am. There was no line and only a couple of people hanging put in the cafe. I ordered a latte and asked if they had almond milk to which the guy behind the counter said of course but let me knows that it was slightly sweetened which I really appreciated. The barista even went as far to look at the amount of sugar in the almond milk which is an unparalleled level of service in my book. The only time in my life any place has even come close was when I lived next to the original intelligentsia in Chicago... Almost 15 years ago. It is located at the end of the Lexington Passage (43rd (I think) and Lexington Ave exit) in case anyone has trouble trying to find it like I did - the map is totally inaccurate. Past MAC, Aveda, L'Occitane, etc. Cafe Grumpy serves your basic coffee needs - I got a regular drip coffee to go and it was not sour and freshly brewed. This is a really great spot if you're in the mood for authentic coffee/espresso on the go. It tastes a lot more fresh than Starbucks or Dunkin' and the cup is the absolute cutest thing. The one downside is the lack of flavoring (vanilla/caramel etc..) I could just be used to the super sweet flavors of the previously mentioned brands, but my taste buds wanted more. I got the iced chai latte today and it was amazzzinggg. The seating is actually really convenient as well for a quick place to relax AND THEY USE PLASTIC STRAWS!!!! just be sure to drink before the straw gets soggy. I had a cold brew here ($3.75) and in my opinion, it tasted pretty watered down. They roast their own beans and they were serving Columbia the day I went. Usually, Colombia beans have a caramel sweetness with a nutty undertone but couldn't taste it in this drink. Tasted pretty bland, but the caffeine definitely works. Coffee is good -- not markedly better or worse than many places in the immediate area, and it's large enough to fit several seats. I've been more than a few times and enjoyed it, but was seriously turned off by a recent visit in which I paid via credit card. The man behind the cashier told me to go pick up my espresso at the end and moved onto the next customer. While I did so, (I found out later) he finished the transaction by helping himself to a $1 tip and forging my signature. He did all this while I was about 5 feet away, unaware that I needed to sign, but he never said anything to me. I suppose the ironic part is I would have tipped anyway, as I usually do at coffee shops. As is, Mr. Barista gets his $1 and Grumpy's loses my business for life. Absolutely my favorite coffee bar in all of Manhattan. Delicious, delightful stuff all around. Staff are friendly, warm (read: not snotty at all), enthusiastic and committed to their work and your coffee. Espresso is so smooth I thought they had left out my extra shot and ordered an additional shot. Turned out they had added the shot, but as I discovered when I tasted the extra shot, it's so unbitter, so complex and tasty, so amazing, it just melted into the breve without my knowing it. Aaaand now that I've described it, I really need a latte. Whenever I have to go to the city, I definitely, totally, always plan Grumpy into the day. Not a ton of food, but if you need that, there's the Grand Central Market next door. Not much in the way of seating, either, so it's best to go with takeout in mind. Quite possibly some of the best coffee I've ever had! Something about this place keeps me coming back. I stumbled upon Grumpy about a year and half ago, I work in the Graybar and was heading into work super early when something smelled delicious. I followed the scent to grumpy and now myself and all my coworkers get our coffee here, a few times a day. The space itself is small. Which is my only complaint, not much space for a meeting or to sit and work. They're always playing old school music from Biggie to Billy Joel, love it! read more

But actually I like to enjoy coffee whenever, so i think ive had enough to comment and the words ive chosen to describe their Skim milk iced latte is.. boring, overpriced, taste? ..meh, maybe even a bit watered down because of the ice. This location is also a narrow shop with only a handful of bar style seats along the side. The name and logo was cute, which drew me, but Im dissapointed with the coffee And definitely the price. Great spot to grab a coffee in grand Central and it's surprising not crowded most of the time I go. I always get the soy cappuccino and they are quite delicious. My friends has gotten the ice coffee and it was also great and a large portion. You pay for what you get here at grumpy. If you're looking for a $2 coffee, go to dunkin donuts. This coffee shop is good if you like your coffee black or with untraditional flavors. They do not offer flavored syrups to sweeten like caramel or hazelnut which was a bit disappointing. I got the latte with oat milk- it was good, just lacked sweetness for my taste. read more

Not cheap but worth it for the quality. I love their cold brew, it really is 1 of the best in the area. Tastes so good with their almond milk. They also have great espresso. The newly - opened Cafe Grumpy at Grand Central Station is TERRIBLE! Sour coffee. Overpriced baked goods. Arrogant, and unprofessional servers. Cafe Grumpy missed its opening deadline, and the pressure is on to make a profitable business. For one thing, the servers were talking about it. The modern space looks immaculate from the street, but upon entry is empty, and undone, and has an inefficient layout. Customers clog the 1st register, while the back one remains empty, because it is where they expect to pick up completed drinks. The Cafe Latte only comes in 1 size (12 ounces), and can only be made with whole milk. Drinks have no lids, and no sleeves. I asked for Banana Bread 4 times, because no one knew how to pronounce, or ring up an item that looked like a cheese scone. I was not "allowed" to have my Banana Bread until my Cafe Latte was done, because both items had to be rung up together. 9 servers, 2 registers, and 6 minutes later, I got my Latte, but no Banana Bread, and when I asked for it I was told to "Lady, relax! It's just Banana Bread!" while the servers laughed at me, and rolled their eyes. Finally, as I walked away, foam sloshing from side - to - side, I sipped my drink. For the Cafe Grumpy right by grand central.... Excellent coffee. Delicious! Expensive though.... The staff were, grumpy as well. We ordered two lattes and a pastry, and they made one coffee but forgot about the other. When I went back to ask about the second coffee they gave me attitude and acted like I was lying or trying to cheat them. The guy went so far as to pull up the sale in the ipad to see if I had indeed purchased two!!!! The line wasn't that long, and there weren't that many customers so I was surprised he couldn't even remember a customer who had litereally checked out less than 5 minutes prior..... Once he verified we had purchased 2 lattes, the barista then proceeded to make everyone else's drinks and then make mine. (I waited 10 minutes) If you make an error then you should make every effort to correct said mistake as quickly and friendly as possible. Instead - grumpy grumpy grumpy. I don't think I will come back as there are other coffee options in the area that don't include attitude. read more

A nice little Cafe Grumpy outpost at Grand Central. I was there around 3:00 so I'm sure if there's a morning of lunch rush, I missed it. There was no line and I got my order at a rapid pace-- I hope they keep up the momentum when it's busier. I asked the cashier what would last me an over two hour train ride, caffeine wise. At first she did not understand what I meant (not a problem, I wasn't exactly clear) but once she knew what I was getting at-- I needed a ton of caffeine-- she recommended their cold brew. I ordered it and immediately knew I made the right choice. They have a ton of items for you to customize your coffee, which is great for anyone with dietary restrictions. I prefer my iced coffee with almond milk and they had it! I added a bit and it tasted perfect. The coffee was smooth and blended perfectly with the almond milk. It was the right amount of bitter (I don't add any sweetener). Not only that, but it have me just the caffeine boost I needed to handle the long ride from Grand Central to Poughkeepsie. Taking off a star because I personally think the coffee is overpriced, but it's no worse than other "indie" New York spots.
