When we asked to swap tables we were initially told that it wasn't allowed, because, "then everyone would ask to swap." We stopped here kind of early on a Friday and had a great experience. We had a toddler and a dog and were immediately seated and thanked for our business. They brought us a high chair as well as a bowl of water for our dog. We also got a great view of the river which kept our toddler occupied. He didn't need to be occupied for too long though because our food came out in about 10 minutes after we placed our order. Our waitress was super attentive and sweet. Food is absolutely disgusting! Would never come ask here again! Service was terrible, our waitress disappeared for so long! We were all out of drinks, had to wait over 20 mins for water. We had to ask multiple times & still didn't receive it! My daughter asked for no tomatoes on her sandwich (still put it on there). When we took them off & put on napkin. My husband and I came here on a Saturday evening. It wasn't overly crowded and we got seated right away. I'm understanding to the lack of staff restaurants are experiencing but no one ever came to check on us. We were ready to order drinks and food but were completely ignored. A rather large group got seated after us and I watched to see how long it took for them to be waited on. Maybe 5 minutes total and after we already waited 20 minutes for anyone to take our drinks order. After seeing they were waited on before us after waiting so long we just got up and left. I'm pretty patient but not when you're completely ignored. We are generally good tippers and pleasant people to deal with but nobody here would have found that out. We will probably not be back. Stopped by for a quick bite to eat while visiting the cute little town of Helen, Ga. I'm a fan of German food, and it was good, but it wasn't my favorite I've ever had. The staff was great and the views were nice, as my husband and I sat along the railing overlooking the river! My husband and I split the giant pretzel and beer cheese which was awesome, and the Brat platter, which came with German potatoes, red cabbage, and two of the Brats of our choosing. It all came with two dry slices of rye bread. The price wasn't worth the little bit of food we were given. Overall it wasn't amazing, but it was what we needed it in a pinch. read more

I was there this weekend. Faith my server was excellent!! I ordered a double vodka and cranberry it came in a very tall glass so it tasted like all cranberry. Faith was going to fix it for me as this was a $16.00 drink that tasted like straight up cranberry. I am not sure if it was the manager or who the person was that came out and told me basically that I was just out of luck. I then advised that I didn't want it (I was not rude). She was very rude. I told her that I was at one time a waitress/bartender and she should try to be a little bit more accommodating. She then responded to me "then you know what it is like to deal with people like you". I drank and ate my food instead of causing a scene. I will never spend another dime there. This is NO way to run a business. I deal with people daily for a living if you want to keep customers coming I would suggest that you NEVEER treat a customer that way. There was a couple behind us upset as well because the hostess was rude to them. I hope this gets to the right person and the rudeness of the people working there are retrained on customer service. Word of mouth has alot to do with people going there and coming back. I have told everyone I know about how myself and the couple behind us were treated so I am sure this happens often.. I am from Germany, so I wanted just a plain traditional bratwurst. I was so disappointed. The brat came on what looked like a hot dog bun. You would think that with a pretty good German style bakery down the road...they would be able to get some fresh brat buns to make it more authentic. There was no crispness to the brat at all, there was no snap when you bit into it. Thankfully there was some mustard on the table, because with out that I doubt it would have any flavor at all. It was the most disgusting brat I have ever had. And side note, why wouldn't you make the meal with fries instead of chips? In Germany, you get brats and fries not lays potato chips. My son had the Rubin, said it was really good. My mom had the trout, not bad but the veggies they served with it were previously frozen so that was gross. My daughter had the kids spaghetti, she ate it but it wasn't cooked all the way. I had the veggie lasagna, the veggies were previously frozen so they tasted weird and way too much cheese. I give this place FIVE STARS, my husband says it's only a four star place because the "international food" was highly Americanized and there was only one waitress on duty, so service was slow. The food was DELICIOUS! I got the "best Reuben in Helen" but it was definitely the best Reuben on the whole east coast! He had to go approach the staff bc after we received our food nobody came to check on us after. He expressed his dissatisfaction with the sandwich and asked if he could get something else and have it removed. The manager said she would not remove it from the bill nor replace it with something else. Obviously we were upset by the treatment since we are paying customers. She went to get the "owner" who was also extremely unhelpful and rude and even said he would call the cops if we didn't pay for it. LOL a call the cops?! Very unprofessional place and will not return. High recommend eating else where in the town. And the "owner" replying SO unprofessionally shows you all you need to know about this dump. He REACTED because your manager was extremely rude and not accommodating to the PAYING CUSTOMER. Worry about your horrible food and you wouldn't have so many negative reviews. I've read several about how awful the rueben is. So clearly it's your food not the customer at fault. You shouldn't be in hospitality industry since you have no concept of customer service. The food here was average. That said, I have no complaints about the food. Our issue was service! Absolutely the worse in Helen, GA. Someone finally took our order and we received our food in a timely manner. We had wanted some condiments for our sandwiches but our server never came and checked on us until after we finished our meal. Our server also never came back to collect our money for the meal. After waiting 20 minutes from receiving the bill, we had to go up front and ask if we could pay. We were supposed to pay at the table. Complete lack of concern for their customers. We were driving from South Carolina to Marietta Georgia and saw that Helen was a cute little town so we decided to stop. The town is very cute but not much options to eat. We were going to eat at other places but this was the only one without a wait. There's a cute little patio that has live music right by it and it's covered too. We asked for a table and they brought us to a little crappy room. Our waitress was not the nicest and took a long time to come to our table. We ordered a pretzel and it was really good but it took a long time to come out. There weren't many options to choose on the menu so I just ordered another pretzel for myself. But it took almost 45 minutes to come out and we were kind of in a rush because we were visiting our friends an hour and a half away. As always, excited to try a new place and this one did not disappoint. Still with a party of seven we were set quickly outside with lovely weather. The waitress was friendly and very attentive. She informed us that their Reuben is the most popular dish, which made up my mind. This was the best Reuben I have ever tasted! The marinade on the corn beef is awesome, no need for the thousand islands, just the meat,cheese and delicious sauerkraut. It literally does not come with thousand islands. I'm only giving it two stars due to one of the waitresses helping us out at a table that wasn't hers. There were 3 other waitresses that walked right by us for 10 minutes without any eye contact or interaction while others were seated after is and ordered. After asking another waitress about who works our section, she took our order. It was another 15-20 minutes before she came back after noticing we didn't get our drinks. I can only speculate that the two waitresses that worked our have some kind of issue with the appearance of me and my wife (see post from Nicole A). I can tell you my day trip to Helen, GA has helped me realize there are still ignorant people that you have to deal with. If the staff here have that age- old Southern ideology, I don't recommend the Cafe International. Not even to stop to use the facilities as they were as nasty as the two waitresses. If you havent been to Cafe International lately, then you MUST GO! It is under new ownership and is fantastic. Both my girls have celiac so allergy awareness is huge for us and they were SO accommodatingand helpful. I cant say enough about the new owner and all he is going to bring this restaurant and the town of Helen. The food was amazing, I had an open face prime rib sandwich (cooked exactly like I like) with some of the best coleslaw (made in house) I have ever had. The girls both gobbled up their cheeseburgers with no bun, fruit and chips. The staff, atmosphere, and food were exceptional and I can't wait to return. Wayyyy overcrowded, I literally was bumping up against the person sitting behind me at the next table. We were sat at a tiny table meant for two with three adults and a dog, a 70 lb boxer. We tried to make it work at first but when the guy behind me kept bumping into me cuz there was literally no room, I asked the server to reseat us at a larger table...she said no, and then some random chick who worked there but wasn't our server (maybe she was a manager) got an attitude and said "no, we have a waiting list and we can't move you." The waitress then did her best to be kind, but literally said "well if we move you to a better table and someone sees us doing it, we'll have to do it for everyone else." Still left a tip when I felt like leaving nothing at all. Overall, horrible experience, bad wait staff, and left completely dissatisfied. Will NEVER visit this place again and be sure I warn anyone else not to go either. On the bright side, we walked over the The Alpine Brew Deck, staff was super friendly to not only us but our doggo, atmosphere was soo much better, drinks were cheaper, and view is amazing. Location of this restaurant is beautiful, however, that is about it. The restrooms do not match the Menu prices. And the Schnitzel does not match the price. It wasn't seasoned and the breading was soggy. The sauerkraut tasted as if it was taken straight out of a bag and warmed up in the microwave.
