I recently visited for the first time and was thoroughly impressed - I now love this place! Tucked away on a quiet street with free parking, it has a welcoming mix of people of all ages. With free Wi-Fi and diverse seating options, it feels like several cafes in one with enough space to not feel like you're sitting on top of someone. As an adult learner, I wanted to find a spot with a quiet crowd that wasn't just the younger generation, and this place had just that. People of all ages were there, most quietly reading or studying, and many sitting alone, which made it perfect for me to get work done. Despite a small staff, they managed the tables efficiently with no long waits for orders or service. They regularly checked in to clean up or see if you needed anything, making the experience smooth. I'll be coming back soon. There's a small free parking lot in the back and metered street parking, though it's limited to one hour. The place offers a variety of seating areas depending on your mood, all with plenty of seats. There's an outdoor section with tables and chairs where smoking is allowed, and blankets are provided. There's also an enclosed patio with small tables for two or four, another room filled with simple black tables, and a large room with vintage dining sets and bookcases separating the tables. The vintage room was my favorite, although it did get a bit chilly at night. Outlets are conveniently located at nearly every table, especially in the area with the small black tables, where they are positioned above head height for easy access. In the enclosed patio and vintage-style room, there are power cords and surge protectors along the walls, making it easy to keep devices charged throughout my stay. However, the Wi-Fi was spotty during my visit. I'm not sure if that's a common issue or just bad luck that night. Fortunately, I had a hotspot, but I overheard a nearby customer asking the server about the Wi-Fi multiple times. They do play music but it's on the softer side. Trust me, I am ultra sensitive to noise when working but the music didn't bother me. The service was fantastic. The staff was quick to take orders and prepare them. When I arrived, I ordered the Hot Yulmu Cha, which I had never tried before, and it was amazing. It tasted like a blend of milk and nuts, with crushed walnuts and almonds on top that added a bit of crunch before softening. I also loved the table buzzer feature - I pressed it to order fries, and they arrived almost immediately, hot and delicious. The staff was very attentive and quick to meet any request. As for prices, the drinks were on the pricier side, around $8 each, but the food was surprisingly affordable. *Additional feedback to what Red R. has posted below. I came with my friends at Cafe Mak and we were accommodated before the last call at 11pm. My friend asked if we could still stay and consume our food and drinks even after 11pm and they said yes, until midnight. As we were looking for seats outside, I found out about a parking lot designated for Cafe Mak customers, which I didn't know, exists. So I decided to move my car from the side street and as I was approaching the parking lot, the security personnel stopped me and told me that the cafe is already closed, to which I responded that we already ordered. So he let me in and I went inside to my friends and started enjoying the food and drinks I ordered. Minutes later, the security personnel approached us at our table and pointed at me saying out loud that I did lie to him. I was embarrassed as my friends and other customers witnessed the incident. I was clueless at this point as I have no idea what I did wrong. I asked what I lied about but I don't think he heard me as he walked away. About 11:30ish, he started announcing to all customers at the cafe that they are about to close in 30 minutes. He once again came to our table and reiterated for me leave the cafe, especially me, he said, because allegedly, I lied to him. Then, the heated conversation began. My friend stepped in to express how we felt harassed and the security personnel kept on repeating that I did lie to him. Apparently, he claimed that I lied about my intention to park. He thought I would just like to park quickly, pick up my order inside and head out, which is why he allowed me to park, but I never gave that impression at all. When he stopped me at the parking lot, I thought he felt the need to let me know that the cafe is closed and I will not be accommodated anymore. Therefore, no reason for me to park, but again, I already ordered and I have until midnight to stay at the cafe. I thought we were on the same page at this point but apparently, not. It was indeed a terrible experience to be in a heated conversation with the security personnel. My friends and I only wanted to consume the food and drinks we ordered, which is technically allowed until midnight. In fact, other customers whose cars were also parked, were still in the establishment. He did not have to come to our table twice and accuse me of lying because I did not lie to him. He made an assumption about my intention to park, and that's on him and even so, I have until midnight according the cafe crew. He was extremely rude. He could have been polite in dealing with the situation but he chose not to. In his eyes, I am a liar and never was I given the benefit of the doubt, at least. This was my favorite hidden gem cafe in Korea Town! The decor is a bit clunky and cluttered but also So cozy and and certainly SO cute! I love the the service is streamlined by the convenience of a little button at the center of each table allowing you to call someone whenever you are ready. The menu is also is also very eclectic! A mix of Korean, American and Italian dishes! But there are some serious gems! The kimchi Carbonara is my second favorite in town ( After Louders) and the Curry rice was warm and comforting just lacking distinction. The Asian chicken salad is basic but decent. Looking for a place in Ktown to study or just lounge around for hours and hours? Look no further people of SoCal. I've been to Cafe Mak more times than I can count that I probably know more about this place than the waiters. First off, the food and drinks are a bit pricier than your usual coffee shop, but I think it's worth it for two reasons. 1) You can stay for as long as you want. I've seen college students stay for at least 5 hours on multiple occasions. 2) Free parking. Why pay $5+ for valet parking when you get it for free? All their drinks and coffee are pretty good but when it comes to their food, my favorites are their potato wedge fries and kimchi fried rice. They honestly might have the best fries in Ktown and their kimchi fried rice tastes like it was made by a Korean mom. Let's not forget about their cakes. Their sweet potato cake isn't for everyone but if you like sweet potatoes I would highly recommend. My favorite cake has got to be their saeng cream cake. It's a very simple cake with just whipped cream and strawberries, but it's also very light and fluffy. As great as all these things sound, no cafe is perfect. The wifi has always been a problem here. When the cafe becomes congested, the wifi becomes just as packed. Mak tries to alleviate this problem by offering multiple wifi ports, so if your port is slow, try connecting to a port that isn't so congested and hopefully it'll be a little faster. It also gets very busy during lunch and right after dinner so service can get a bit slow and waiters might make mistakes. If you're the unfortunate recipient of a mistake, please be patient and understanding. If your drink hasn't come out after 5 minutes or your food hasn't come out after 20 minutes, just calmly press the service button on your table. read more

What makes Cafe Mak so enticing is it's the perfect, and I mean perfect place to read a book, do some work, studying, whatever you need to do to concentrate. It's also a great spot to meet buddies to catch up, I've seen all types here. They have a good outdoor and indoor seating area. The food is good and the drinks are a little steep but I would consider that it's to be expected if they expect people to sit for hours off of one cup of coffee.... They've got tons of books on shelves and sockets for your laptops to find a place to get comfortabe. Very nice service - just like any Korean restaurant there is a bell you ring when you want to place an order. Nothing takes too long to get to you. I'd say their banana milk is great. My second time coming here to study. Lots of space and comfortable place to study at, but I had an extremely unpleasant experience with the staff here. I ordered a sandwich (size is about ~6 inches) and wanted to add avocado. The addition of avocado is $2.75. For that price, I thought I would be getting at least enough avocado to cover the entire sandwich, but there were only 4 SLICES of avocado. When I brought up the concern with the staff she gave a very judgmental attitude and told me I had to pay more if I wanted more avocado. I'm sorry but if you're going to charge $3 for avocado the least you can give is enough to cover the sandwich right? Another staff member came over and explained that the price was only 1/4 of an avocado, and that no one else had complained before (insinuating that it was wrong for me to bring this up as a concern..?). She also spoke very loudly and said "if this isn't what you expected I can talk to the kitchen to ask them to gove you more FREE avocado." She repeated this multiple times very loudly and emphasized the "free" part. I felt so uncomfortable because I didn't think that it wasn't out of line to bring up my concern about the avocado amount but it seems that the staff think I'm trying to ask for free food...if the avocado was included with the sandwich I would understand, but for an extra charge I would expect more than 4 thin slices of avocado in a 6 inch sandwich. I ended up refusing their offer for the extra "free" avocado. It's a shame because this place is very comfortable to study at, but the staff are a bit condescending (with the excepion of one male worker, he was very nice to us). read more

Haven't been here for years. After tasting so many different kinds of food in ktown, I came back and found it is better than most places. Drinks are honestly not good. Service is okay I guess considering they came when I rung the bell but I didn't get my fries so? Just skip this cafe if you're studying, the food is good but its unnecessarily expensive, there isn't very good air conditioning and it gets unbearable if you're outside of the library (which is almost always full). There are better spots for studying with a more affordable menu and better service !! Food is good, but the service on the other hand is...literally terrible the servers were great, but the hostess (?) my table had was first of all acting super condescending, and just so rude! When we asked nicely if we could move to an inner table while we were studying, she made up this rule that was UNHEARD of, saying we had to start a new check when moving tables, and then switched her story on how we'd need to buy one item per every 3 hours, which didn't even matter considering we bought 4 items and we had only been there for 3! Of course, I'm not saying we were entitled to anything, but considering the last ~10 times I had been there and had switched tables on MULTIPLE OCCASIONS (since they have reservations for most tables) while not having any problems before felt so petty. She had an attitude when we were paying too, and acted like she wasn't getting paid for counting a couple bills. Honestly such a bitchy response to everything we had to say and did,.. we did NOT feel welcome. I would understand if it was coming from a server, but she wasn't even doing anything !! in theory, cafe mak is the perfect place to go to get out of the house to get some work done and be productive. in my years of coming here i have enjoyed the space for what it is: mediocre (fried & processed) food, forgettable coffee and capricious ambiance. which may or may not be a vibe depending on who you're with and which servers are on shift. despite it all, the appeal lies in the fact that it's one of L.A.'s few late night cafes which is perfect for people like me and every now and then i'd swing by only to be left with the same sour taste in my mouth because of their shit customer service. today was like any other time i had been to cafe mak. it's busy and there are no tables available. my friend and i do a lap to find a seat and we have 2 options, a table toward the back of the cafe on the black bench that has crumbs all over the seats, filthy napkins on the floor and multiple plates of half eaten food or take a corner of one of the 'reserved' tables in the second room near the restrooms. our logic was that if a larger party comes in we'd just make room for them as there was plenty or find another empty table. we sat for about 15 minutes before one of the waitresses informed us we had to move. we told her there were no tables and then she cleared one near the front entrance. this was sort of annoying because we weren't bothering anyone and already found a flow but whatever. at this time we weren't using our computers yet. once we sat at our new table the waitress was pushy and emphasized we order something. reminding us that we can push the button to place an order. she came back 3 times in the span of 15 minutes basically pressuring us to order. it got to the point where i said, "did i ring the bell?" 'no.' "okay, we will ring it once we are ready to order." this type of energy is always quite annoying because they make it as though we were free loading even though we had only been there 30 minutes and planned to be there for a few hours. a few moments later, my friend ordered a lemon tee while i still decided. the waitress once again made it a point that i HAD to order something. i informed her i was still deciding and would push the button once i was ready to order. i eventually decide on red wine, cab -- while i waited opened my laptop. the wifi wouldn't connect. i retried until the wine and cheese arrived, i took a sip of the wine and a single bite of the mild cheddar and stuck the toothpick back in it. i tried for another 5 minutes before ringing the button and told the waitress the wifi isn't working to which she told me to restart my computer. my friend's wifi was going in and out and anytime i tried to connect, i saw over 16 iphones with their hotspots on so it wasn't a my computer issue. it was their wifi. i restarted my computer and the issue persisted. i called another waitress and told her the issue, she went on a monologue about how they had to change the wifi two times to which i informed her of my frustration of being basically rushed into making a purchase just for their system to be down. which to me didn't seem like a fair exchange. beyond the annoyance i felt for the pushy waitress, the experience just continued to be more and. more lackluster the more i interacted with the servers and spent time there. i basically requested a refund for the wine since there wifi wasn't working and the waitress immediately snatched the glass and the cheese with my single bite mark in it. it was so comical and cinematic... i was in disbelief. lmao instead of offering actual customer service, she just took the drink away. that was the final straw for me, so we decided to leave and go to another cafe up the road. as we were walking out to the parking garage, the first server started chasing us out to the car yelling we were supposed to pay for the lemon tea. mind you, my friend took 2 sips of the tea... to which i reply, "your wifi isn't working.... why would we pay? she didn't even finish her drink." all in this same moment, a security guard with a bad leg is limping after us... i'm just sitting here with my face in my palms like "????" this will probably be the last time i come here because this is really just about a lack of attention to detail when it comes to customer service and showing appreciation to your patrons. it also doesn't help that i'm black so every time i go there, they treat me like a thief rushing me to purchase something off their mediocre menu. which i do because like i said at the beginning, in theory cafe mak is a vibe. but behind the curtain is a shit show and i really hate feeling the way these employees make me feel when i come here. read more

this is quite literally the perfect place for a last night study session. there is so much seating indoor and outside, very aesthetic. the indoor has dark academia vibes, PLENTY of outlets and is the perfect place to study. there is a parking lot in the back, it's a little small but there is street parking and another lot to park at. I don't know why this place has such low ratings, but I would definitely keep coming back. Zoom school got me trying different cafes along LA for taking my classes. So for me, I would evaluate a cafe from four different perspectives: Environment, amenities (outlets and wifi), parking, and $$. Environment: (5/5): This place is huge. It has an outdoor area and an indoor area. and the indoor area is massive. The seats are comfortable. It's super quiet. The space is big enough that you can probably avoid some talkative groups too. Amenities: (5/5): I had no issues with the wifi. There are a lot of outlets, Parking: (5/5) Big parking lot in the back. $$: (3/5) on par with other cafe pricing which is still expensive. I paid $7 for a drink. If you consider as parking to use the space, I guess it's okay. I do have to say that their menu is huge, so if you want to grab food and stay here for a long time that's possible. I recommend the Ginger Latte, it was one of the best lattes I had. read more

However, some of the seats are not the most comfortable. There was a cord dangling, resting on one of the booths which is definitely a hazard. The place feels a little dirty so I usually just have my own sanitizing wipes with me to do a quick wipedown of my seating area. The drinks, I could very easily make at home. Food is mediocre. The two staff members I interacted with were friendly! The internet is absolute crap there so you'll have to likely use your phone's hotspot. There is some sort of DNS blocker on their wifi that limits access to certain websites, so I had trouble accessing my online textbook. The place could use a bit of a facelift, but it's not too bad. I met up with my friends here to catch up and when my friend picked this place, I was so happy that there's parking in the back. I thought it was odd that there's a driveway to a parking lot in the back with outdoor seating. What if someone was reckless with their driving and drive into people who sat outside? Just a thought. It's super low key from the outside but it's surprisingly huge and it has a 90s vibe which really takes you away from the boring fake IG vibes. It has more subtle, soft lighting which I love. I guess I'm a regular at this place now! I usually stay in LA for a few hours to wait for traffic to die down, and this has become my regular waiting spot. It has everything you could want for a study spot: outlets, carby food, parking, drinks, desserts, tables, and lots of other fellow studiers! It is a little dark, but it seems like all of the rooms have different lighting. Also, you can ask for an extension cord! For starters, the pasta is okay! So far I've gotten the tomato cream pasta (which I recall is the name, but not positive), spaghetti + meatballs, and the kimchi carbonara. I would say the former two are okay, but good enough to satisfy a craving. The kimchi carbonara is delicious though! I've also gotten the katsu sandwich, but I didn't like it much. The kimchi fried rice and omurice are solid! Nonetheless, these dishes are perfect for intense studying days! I usually get the loose leaf teas. They come with at most two cups, and I believe you can refill at least once for free. They gave us two go cups of tea at around 10, when they were closing up their kitchen! Make sure to order your drink with a meal if you're going to order both for the discount. For those of ya'll with social anxiety like me, here's how the place works: you can find a seat anywhere and the little buttons have the number of people minimum you can have at a table labelled (though I don't think they enforce it). After you find a seat, you can press the button to ask for a menu! Then when you're ready to leave, you can press the button again to pay. I got the matcha and it was creamy, sweet, with little to no matcha flavor. My friend got kimchi fried rice and it was salty and overpriced imo. Service is nice. They come get your order when u ring the bell and overall pleasant interaction. Ambiance was probably the best out of food, service, and ambiance. Nice place to study.
