They looked puzzled at first but eventually figured it out. The Esquite Toast was OK. The bread was overly toasted. The Breakfast Burrito was OK. It filled us up. The Iced Vanilla Latte tasted too milky, could hardly taste the espresso. The hibiscus lemonade was OK. When our order arrived, a staff member was apologetic and offered a baked good on the house. We weren't able to redeem the offer given the long line that grew after our meal. Not the best first impression but maybe they were having an off day?

There's some seating outside in between this place and the place next-door. The folks here are very friendly and the service is quick. A buddy of mine were running errands in the area before they get together, so we stopped by here for some coffee. Their baked goods look good as well, so we decided to split one of their miso sesame cookies. It was unique and delicious. If I remember correctly, I got the Filipino iced coffee because it had soke ube in it. Plenty of parking. Delicious food and delicious drink drinks with quick service. Nothing to dislike!

The treatment, the attitude, the attention to detail -- it all felt genuine. It had personality. (And by the way, Amelia was always my favorite barista there.) After being away for a couple of months, I came back and immediately noticed the vibe had changed. The first thing I felt was that it no longer had the warmth that made it special. It started to feel like just another coffee spot in LA. Maybe I'm just getting older and appreciating human interaction more, but to me a great barista is almost like a morning bartender -- someone who sets the tone for your day, even through a small interaction. Lately, there are a couple of baristas there who, at least from my experience, come across very disconnected. No emotion, no warmth, almost robotic to the point where it feels uncomfortable. At first I thought maybe it was just me being picky, but one day I stayed for a while, drank my coffee there, and observed the room. Honestly, it seemed like most people were getting the same cold treatment. Maybe it's a generational thing. Who knows. What I did discover is that they also serve coffee at their wine bar around the corner, and strangely enough, the energy there feels much more welcoming. Sometimes all people want is a simple smile the world refuses to give them some days. I still appreciate what Lil East once was for me, but these days I'd probably avoid the coffee shop location itself. If I have the time, I'd rather grab my coffee from Lil Cans instead.

The cream top does make it very creamy and it does mask majority of the matcha flavor. It did taste like a dessert drink. It was enjoyable though. COLD BREW VANILLA Weirdly sour and smoky flavored cold brew. Slight floral flavor too. It was such an odd combination of flavors with the vanilla cold foam. The lingering aftertaste was not good either. It's neither this nor that. Would not recommend! FINANCIERS Their financiers are made by a local bakery called Musk. It seems their financier flavors are changed often, so no same flavors are in rotation. Sausage & Parmesan - The almond cake's vanilla flavor with the sausage and salty parmesan was a unique flavor. The almond cake was nice and spongy. It did take a bit of time to get used to the savory flavors with the almond cake. It's like a breakfast in an unexpected way. Nutella - Buttery almond cake with nutella and roasted hazelnuts. Enjoyed it! I think Nutella fans would like it. Mugwort + Fig - Buttery in the beginning and it ends with a good, medium-strength flavor of mugwort. Fig was garnish on top, so you barely get it. However, I like that they added the sweetness of the figs with the earthy bitter mugwort. Overall, it was uniquely delicious and mugwort was the star. PARKING Street parking is available, yet when I was there in the early afternoon on a Tuesday, it was packed! The only place to park was the paid parking lot right across from Damo. Parking was $5.00. I wouldn't recommend parking elsewhere outside of that street, as it is a sketchy area and lots of homeless encampments around the area. Would I return? Not sure.
