This place WAS dope to me, the vibe was nice and I loved that I was able to buy coffee late here. I've been a handful of times and for the most part I've always had a great time. That being said, I will not return to this shit hole. I've previously ignored all the cons about this place because the service was good, but my last visit was awful! The dude bartending (the one that looks like a Great Value Slash from Guns N' Roses) got pissed because I ordered a water and I walked away even though my buddy was still right there. Dude had the nerve to tell me "next time don't fucking walk away when you order something from me!" - I was appalled and obviously I didn't like the way he spoke to me (I was visibly unhappy, probably looked like a typical drunk patron from the outside but I wasn't in the wrong). Anywho after him and I exchanged words, I saw my way out. While I was walking out, the girl at the door (the one with the Colin Kapernick hairstyle who checked our IDs when we got there) pushed me while I was walking out and called me a bitch! Roasted: this was our second visit here and enjoyed the experience again. This coffee shop serves coffee during the day and turns into a bar at night. Unique layout as half the location looks and feels like a coffee shop but walk into the other half and it's a full bar. Feels more like a bar than it does a coffee shop. It was a quiet Sunday morning and the service matched that. Friendly but just nothing more. The latte was good - but was too hot and lacked any latte art. We had no latte art our first visit so it must not be a thing here. We were not offered for here mugs even though there was a stash on top of the bar. Came back a second time and would come back again for sure. Unroasted: I enjoyed my first visit and decided to try it again but with a review. This place is pretty big with stuff everywhere. They have a really cool old table pinball and world atlas books that are always cool. The staff is pretty friendly nothing to brag about. The coffee was tasty not as good as the first time. I first stumbled upon Cafe Mustache when I was in of search a cafe to help kill some time. Cafe Mustache was a great selection because it has such a relaxing and chill atmosphere which is perfect for people that want to escape the noisy streets of Chicago. I would describe Cafe Mustache as a hipster and classical music lover paradise. The inside looks like you walked into a Miami antique store. The tables are tiny (mostly 2 person tables) but there is ample seating. When I went to Cafe Mustache there was only one person working but she was very friendly and worked quickly. All of the customers seemed to leave with a smile on their face. I had the chance to try the breakfast sandwich which they empathize as having mostly organic and local ingredients. The sandwich was pretty tasty because they usw a curry Aolio sauce. The sauce helps to take the sandwich from basic to delicious. The only issue I have about the sandwich was that it was $6 which is a little steep for just eggs, cheese and sauce. I would highly recommend Cafe Mustache for anyone that is dining solo or on a date because it's such a small and intimate place. I've been here a few times now and each experience has been vastly different. The first night was great! It was game night and Sasha and the female bartender whose name I can't remember were fantastic! My most recent visit was a hot sour however. I could tell by the way the bartender stared from the time I walked in that it was going to be a rough one. Order 2 palomas that were pretty expensive given the type of bar it is. Came back and ordered 2 more. Instead of telling me he had no idea what a Paloma was(I too am a bartender) he made whatever he wanted and it was $6 cheaper for some reason. The girl that made my first overpriced pair watched him make the wrong drinks, charge me differently, but just decided to whisper to him about who knows what after I returned to my seat. It just didn't feel right at all so I surely will never return. read more

Cafe Mustache is a cute cafe where, for once, the music isn't too loud so you can definitely focus with quiet music playing in the background (I only came here for the cafe function so I'm not sure how it is at night when it becomes more like a bar). Everything there is so eclectic from the furniture to the wallpaper to the bathrooms (definitely check out the bathroom with all the maps; it's really cool). The only qualm about the environment I would say is the lack of plugs available. At one point, to charge my phone, I had to leave my phone half way across the room and that was quite frustrating because I had to constantly check it to make sure no one had taken it. The baristas there are super sweet though, and they can make drinks off the menu as well (I got a mocha). The larger mocha was about ~5.50, and was one of the best mochas I've had in a while. The coffee flavor blended with chocolate was so good; would definitely recommend. I would give it a 4/5-- I only wish it was slightly cheaper. Another qualm I have about this place is the cost. Sure, I understand that cafes tend to be expensive, but my friend tried to order a bagel here ($3) and when he asked how much cream cheese was, he got ($2!!!!!!!). At that point, he ended up getting something else. It's kind of ridiculous to charge $2 for cream cheese. Besides that, it's definitely a nice establishment with quiet music and a good crowd. I love coming here during the daytime to work off a laptop from one of the comfy seats of Cafe Mustache. It's such a homey, kitschy vibe. The gumbo is perfect in the wintertime to warm up along with some coffee. They have plenty of sandwich options too. I've never had a problem with service from the staff - they may not be the warmest hipsters on the block, but that doesn't mean they don't do a good job bringing orders out in a timely manner. It's unique spots like this that make Logan Square great. The cafe side shuts down service after 5 (you can stay seated as long as you want), and the bar side begins to turn up. They host PLENTY of events that change every month. I can listen to live jazz one night, and a hip hop dj the next. No matter if you're a daytime coffee person or want to hang at a cool bar for the night, cafe mustache has got you on both. read more

It gave me good jumping point for a flavor profile I would one day like to try in latte form. What made up for the disappointing latte? Answer: The freakin' cider! I swear to you, it was so good it had to have been made by descendant of Jesus. Heavenly. So heavenly that I was able to look within and forgive my lackadaisical latte... buuut not quite enough to forgive the absolutely rock hard brownie they sold me. Seriously, I think I chipped an incisor. Oh, and the cafe is crazy cute with rotating works from local artist adorning the walls. I could come here every single week (which I basically do) and never get tired of it. Cafe Mustache is a super chill coffee shop and happens to have really good food as well. My favorite thing to get from here is the Vegan Chili which I get with some smoked cheddar and sour cream. It's spicy, comforting, and the perfect cure for anything. The grilled cheese is a close second. Last time I went, I tried their bagel sandwich and it's probably going to be included in my go-to's now. In my opinion, they have some of the best coffee as well. I am a huge fan of their black pepper, fig, vanilla latte. The jalisco is also amazing. I was so happy when Cafe Mustache opened up. It created a nearby solution to New Wave and Starbucks. They weren't just close, they had vegan options, happy and friendly staff, great atmosphere and really chill music. Plus it felt great supporting a local business at the start of their journey. Cafe Mustache has been open for a while now, and I still try to support them frequently, most often stopping in after the Farmers Market. As they've grown, seating has become harder to come by, unless you know the right times to swing in, or are willing to share with a stranger. I love the eclectic furniture, and vintage mugs. Makes you feel like you're in somebody's living room, rather than some cafe! They do a lot of live music and are actually going to be expanding into the empty storefront next door to accommodate more events, which is awesome. The Black Pepper Vanilla Fig Latte and the vegan chili are the best items on the menu! And if they are selling any of the rosemary caramels at the counter, do yourself a favor and buy 10! It's settled at the bottom, leaving a trail to the mouth of the mug. It lends a round, warm spice to an otherwise cloying drink, and at $5 each, the latte could have benefited from having this flavor uniformly prominent. **RACISTS** A group of friends and I decide to stop in here for a few drinks. My friends got in before me. I walked up about five minutes after them. They were sitting in the patio section and I greeted them as I walked up. That's when a person at the door laughed and told me "I'm not letting you in". I was caught off guard so I asked him "me?" He said yes and walked away in to the bar. I was appalled by the reaction so I asked the other two people at the door what the reason was for me not being allowed in. The guy first tried to tell me I fell off of a scooter. Then he changed his story and said my friend (who was already in the bar) fell off of a scooter so that's why I couldn't come in. Then he told me that I was loud. Mind you this place was empty. While I am trying to figure out why I'm not being allowed in a group of very loud, and clearly drunk white women walk up SCREAMING and are allowed right in. I cannot say enough good things about Cafe Mustache. They have a great coffee/tea selection... especially the El Jalisco Latte. It is slightly sweet and dusted with cinnamon. I keep coming back just for that! I love all the photos of mustaches and the mismatched furniture. The baristas are friendly and they often play solid music as well. (So important for a great coffeehouse experience!) They change the wifi password everyday so be aware of that in case you plan on doing some work there regularly. This is a solid study spot any time of day, and the fact that it turns into a bar after 6 is nice if you want to keep working. They do turn off the wifi and the music gets louder then, but that's a good time to transition from work to fun anyway. I've been a regular customer at Cafe Mustache for a few years and I've finally decided to leave them a review. I know it sounds weird to leave a business to which you've repeatedly returned a one-star review but I don't use Yelp much anymore. Generally, I don't place much value on opinions and I think Yelp has played a role in the current toxic environment where everyone thinks their own opinion is really important when it definitely is not. What I experience here was impactful enough to make me break my own rules and leave a review. I don't think my experience is at all important or significant but perhaps you might see some similarities between my review and others who have given Cafe Mustache a low rating. A few weeks ago, I would have given this place at least 4 stars so I'll try to be as fair as possible by including what I used to like about it as well. PROS: *An incredible selection of vinyl. There's almost always good music playing and it's one of the few coffee shops where I don't feel like I have to wear my headphones. Choice also varies based on the barista, which is fun. *Tasty food options. I like the breakfast wrap, the vegan scone, and the fall+winter soups. *It's a great place to work in the afternoon because it turns into a bar in the evening. It's nice to have a drink to end the day. *No WiFi after 6pm -great for getting yourself and others off the laptop *Solid live music programming *A couple of the people who work here are REALLY nice. See cons section for more details... CONS: *On more than one occasion I have had issues with men creeping here. This isn't really the shop's problem but it has happened enough times here (and never at any other coffee shop) so I think it's important to mention. *The female owner and barista is judgmental and definitely profiles customers. I could always sense this about her but was able to let it roll off my back and didn't think too much of it. I'm not the kind of person who needs to have everyone like me and I'm fine when my vibe just doesn't align with someone else's. I do think it's a bit inappropriate to make your dislike for a customer/specific types of customers so known but people have their own way of dealing with things. Recently, my husband decided he was sick of the unnecessary saltiness and asked her why she is so unfriendly to him when we come in. I'll leave the nasty details out but I definitely don't want to give my hard-earned money from my own business to someone who is supposed to be community-oriented yet, in the same breath, actively excludes different types of people from their community. It's a business so they can do what they want and serve who they want but don't pretend it's a place where everyone is welcome. Despite all of the things I love about Cafe Mustache I will not be going back. Those 2 dudes & 1 gal are there all the time, day & night, working hard, getting their hands dirty, busting it. 3. Relaxed no-hassle no-hustle atmosphere. You can get your work and/or hanging out done with time and space to spare, eg: no one batted an eye when several souls chose to park themselves and skype for hours on end. Toward that end: contrary to what the few naysayers on Yelp may lead you to believe, it's not at all about "being seen" -- I can barely remember the face and/or outfit of a single customer I've seen there -- and every time I've been at Mustache, the music was never loud, nor ever intrusive. 4. In fact, they actually spin a pretty nice record collection. There was experimental jazz to be had the other week and my wife & I very much enjoyed the MoTown last Friday. The logo is a well-groomed handlebar mustache, aka the facial hair of choice for any hipster girl's dream guy. Hipster bingo cards [1] aside, if you're not in "grab and go" mode for a cup of coffee, may I suggest you stay a while and enjoy your espresso at Cafe Mustache? The decor is retro-cool: one of the tables is actually a vintage organ and there's a section of the coffee shop dedicated to music consignment. Although Cafe Mustache serves coffee by day, by night it is a live music venue. Not only did I love that a double espresso set me back only $2, but that it was smooth and not overly acidic. It's also hard NOT to be tempted by the Bleeding Heart baked goods, which I am sure would go very nicely with a latte. I really like Cafe Mustache's whole vibe. The decor, the set-up, the music, even the coffee was tasty enough. It's a really quiet shop that's open relatively late and it's easy to get a lot of work done. There is a good amount of seating and usually lots of other laptop users and readers. I had an iced coffee and at the last second I side-eyed their pastries that were wrapped in plastic wrap on the counter. I decided on a brownie - it was big and brown, and looked nice and chocolatey, which was all I needed. I sat down and set myself up at a table right near the counter, and bit into my brownie. It was rock hard. I'm not sure if they make them there, or get them from an outside bakery, but I was soooo saddened by how bad this brownie was. I'm sure it would have tasted lovely if I could eat it. I literally could not. It felt like I was trying to take a bite out of a rock. I felt a little embarrassed because the cafe was absolutely silent and I didn't want to make a scene, so I didn't try and return it. The coffee was good, and there's free wi-fi, and I'm sure all of there food isn't this bad. But be sure to check the firmness of the treats wrapped in plastic on the counter before buying. So, here's what I really love about mustache: service is always great, coffee is pretty darn good, they have solid prices on their whole bean coffee, and their food is pretty yummy. Here's my beef: Passive aggressive rules for this place posted throughout the place. Holy god, it drives me absolutely bananas. Everything from the obvious to the strange is posted on these walls, and it feels like entitlement at it's finest mixed with coffee. I also cannot stand that they turn off their wifi after 8pm. If I've got a shit ton of homework I have been putting off, when the hell do you think i want to do my work? I can tell they are really trying to switch to the cool cafe with booze now, but now it's one less place quiet in Logan I can do work at. Cafe by day, bar by night! I stumbled upon this place randomly as I was walking down Milwaukee Ave in search of a place to study. Unfortunately, the cafe I had initially planned on going to was at maximum capacity and had no room for me :(. This cafe was just down the street and offered plenty of seating, so I thought I'd give it a shot. Be warned, most tables seat maybe two people comfortably so don't come here in a big group expecting to be seated together. Upon entering, I was greeted by a strange stench. I considered leaving, but was with a friend at the time and didn't want to inconvenience him by searching for another cafe to settle down at. I continued on to order my drink, a black pepper, vanilla fig latte. The drink wasn't too bad. Definitely unique in its taste. Initially you get this vanilla latte-type flavor then BAM you get hit with the spices. Takes a while to get used to, but I think I actually kind of enjoyed it. At 6PM, the internet gets cut off as the place transitions from a cafe to a bar. You can stay and study if you want as they won't kick you out, but the music does get kind of loud. Maybe I'll come back here another time to try out that alcohol-infused coffee on their menu! read more

This is conveniently located by the California Blue line stop, and there is usually plenty of car and bike parking to be found...as long as you're not going on a Friday or Saturday night. The vanilla latte itself was good and it was nice to relax while surfing the net. I did enjoy the brownie, but I would have preferred a non-vegan option though.
