I'm always on the hunt for good Hong Kong-style cafes because that's the kind of comfort food that satisfies me in whatever Chinese-dominant neighborhood I find myself strolling. With its inexplicable tie-in to Hawaii, this cafe is comparable and even more spacious. It has pretty much the same formica and the same elderly clientele I've come to expect at these gathering spots. I was able to score a table along the banquette between two pairs of feisty, chatty seniors. I'm guessing they were regulars judging by the massive amount of food they ordered. The menu was huge, spanning a wide variety of comfort food over multiple laminated pages. As a starter, I decided to order the $6.75 Pork Liver Rice Roll (Photo 10). Generously stacked on a plate and doused with a flood of soy sauce, it was tasty though the amount of pork liver was on the paltry side. I ended up taking most of it home because I also ordered the $8.59 Club Sandwich (Photo 9). They did a good job with three thin slices of toast filled with chicken, ham, egg, iceberg lettuce, tomato, and mayo. It was quartered and accompanied by a pile of fries just like you'd see at a Denny's. What can I say? It hit the spot. Decided to give this restaurant a try because 1) the advertised price on the super big menu outside next to the entrance of the restaurant shows decent prices. 2) restaurant has nice ambience - clean, modern & open, which is rare for a Chinatown restaurant. However, we found out that the menu prices inside the restaurant are higher than those on the menu outside the restaurant. That means Management did not update the "outside" the menu after they raised prices. I wonder how long have they not updated the outside menu prices. Worse yet, we found out that the coffee price charged on the bill was higher than the price on the menu we were given inside the restaurant. Menu shows $2.80 per cup. The bill shows $3.50 per cup of coffee, By the way, considering size of their cup (no refill), this is probably a more expensive cup of coffee than what you can get at Starbucks! We happened to remember the price of coffee on the menu. But I actually don't remember the price of the other 4 food items ordered. It made me wonder afterwards whether we were also "overcharged" on the food items. Service - good. We had early lunch on a Saturday when restaurant was not yet busy. My guess is Mom is the main server. Husband helps. A small boy, probably their son also helps delivering water and orders to the tables as there are more customers. Food - ok to good. We ordered a stir fry string bean, clay pot, noodle soup, and Singapore stir fry vermicelli. Three out of four items were good except the portions are not generous. The noodle soup did not have enough soup and we would prefer the noodles to be more Al Dente. However, when we asked the server to give us more soup, he quickly delivered. Despite not updating the outside menu after the owner raised prices, what I did not like is the handwritten bill. Considering their modern ambience, why do they still have hand written bills that you can't even read the numbers clearly? (I wish I remember to take a photo of the bill). Also the way the server/owner listed the amounts are very weird. Instead of listing the individual prices of the ordered items, get a subtotal, then add sales tax to subtotal to get the total amount of the bill, sales tax is added to each individual item first, then added up to get a total. Not seeing the pre-tax amount makes checking the bill even more difficult. I have never seen any other restaurant do it like that. Will I go back again? I don't know. I liked the ambience. The food was ok. But I really don't want to have to deal with a poor not-computerized receipt that is not clear, and misleading prices on different menus. Although the owner was willing to reduce the bill for the cups of coffee that we consider "overcharged", we had to show them the menu as proof. A restaurant my mom and I have been going to for years and hadn't checked out in a while. We went for dinner on a Saturday around 5 pm and the restaurant was spacious with lots of seating. We liked that they had a lot of options on their menu for any dishes you might be wanting and I had been wanting a Hong Kong style spaghetti but a baked version this time. Baked Meat Sauce Spaghetti - It took longer for it to come out since they had to bake it but it was perfect. The dish came out steaming hot and the spaghetti was thick. Cafe New Honolulu is located next to my old Chinese language school, Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall. This is a Hong Kong style cafe and does not have Hawaiian food on the menu. My first impression of this restaurant was how big the dining room was. It was modern and sort of clean. I was skeptical of their authenticity because of it. But, during my meal, the kitchen staff rolled the big Recology garbage cans through the dining room and out the front door. This confirms that it is an authentic Chinese restaurant. I had their baked pork chop spaghetti $11. It was OK. It didn't have that deep tomato taste and the spaghetti was too moist. Pork chops tasted fine but the color was off. The noodles broke apart when I used my fork on it. Given that it took over 30 minutes for this dish to come out, I would not order this if I'm in a hurry. If you are worried about your parking meter or garage tab, the food wait time will push it over. There were only two parties eating. Slow kitchen. When we walked in most of the tables are occupied and all the empty tables were still dirty. We noticed only ONE waitress working for the entire floor. We patiently waited for the server.
