I went to R&G Lounge for two reasons: to go to a restaurant in San Francisco's Chinatown and to get the famous salt & pepper Dungeness crab. Upon walking in, I was surprised by the ambiance, as it was nicer inside than I anticipated. Other reviews knock the service for being slow, but R&G just seems to be consistently busy. My wife ordered a mai tai, which was one of the better ones I've had. For my appetizer, I ordered the baby octopus. I personally enjoyed it, but if you get weirded out by texture, I wouldn't recommend it. As for the Dungeness crab, it was good, but I don't think it's worth the price. I could have ate more and spent less had I gotten something else. Regardless, I would definitely go back to R&G. read more

A classic San Francisco establishment - I'll start off with saying that you are paying a premium for the food and service. Our check also had 20% gratuity added automatically be the restaurant for a table of 7. Most dining is underground (downstairs) but there is a bar area upstairs where you can dine in as long as you're okay sitting at high tops. When I went, it looks like they only offered it to people with max table of 2. R&G is known for their Dungeness crab but they have other classic dishes as well if that's not your thing. Only took pictures of 3 dishes but my table ordered 9 (8 dishes + 1 soup). Every dish we had was cooked well and flavorful. You could tell that the chefs and cooks in the kitchen spent had a lot of experience. The servers were also really knowledgeable and ready to give advice and recommendations. I'm not sure if I'll go back soon as I always see R&G as more of a special occasion restaurant but I know that when I do, the food will be delicious and the service excellent. read more

Came here while in town to chase our love for crabs. Since our usual spot was closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, we were on a quest to find another good crab restaurant. This was the first we thought of as our friend repeatedly recommended this. Sorry to say, I think Vancouver Cantonese restaurants are many notches better. The crab was super coated with flour and then fried. The crab fat, all crusted with flour and hardened, that I wasn't able to enjoy any bit of it. I'd rather taste the garlic bits than the crispy flour. We also ordered a Mixed Vegetables with Mushroom but portion is very small. Our quest continues... Tasty Chinese food! I really enjoyed the salt and pepper green beans - they were fried so a very unique take on a classic dish. The egg plant dish was also unique where they layered in a fish in it too. One downside- the ordering the food arrived was awkward. They brought out the mango sago (dessert) as the 2nd item and brought out the fried rice dish as the last item, much after all the protein dishes. On a recent trip to San Francisco, my friend and I were craving good Chinese food after a long road trip and afternoon of sightseeing. We tried to do a little research, but things were closing on the early side. A friend suggested this restaurant that he had dined out with his family went in town. We arrived about half hour before closing, and the place was huge. There was a bar, bar area and it appeared to have at least 3 to 4 dining rooms on multiple levels. It was very lively and full. They told us they didn't have a table, but we absolutely begged and agreed to order within five minutes. This was no problems since we had already looked at the menu before arriving. Everything looked and smelled so good at the other tables that we just had to try the Peking Duck. It was crispy, juicy and fantastic with the scallions and bow, as well as as the hoisin sauce. I've been craving this dish for a long time and the restaurant fulfilled all my cravings. We ordered the seafood garlic noodle. They said they were out of crab, but still charged us the full price. I think it's a personal thing but for me the noodles were too thick and I didn't get much garlic flavor. It also had quite a small amount of seafood although the shrimp and scallops inside were on the large side. I missed the crab. The mixed vegetable dish with mushrooms was so fresh and had such a lovely combination of vegetables. It even had lotus root, and everything was cooked to perfection. I think on par with the duck my favorite dish was the eggplant with garlic sauce. The menu said it was spicy, but for me, it was not too spicy. It had bamboo shoots, black mushrooms, scallions, and other mouthwatering seasonings. The eggplant looked caramelized, but was so tender inside. I could eat this every night if I lived closer or even in town.! We ordered dessert in advance, which was the mango Sago. It tasted like it had mango and pomelo along with the tapioca in a mango flavored pudding. We all loved it. We got there when they were closing, but I found the service to be a little abrupt. They were loudly banging dishes as they were cleaning tables, and they were rushing us, and also forgetting things we kept asking for. However, the food more than made up for it. San Francisco definitely has excellent Chinese food and this place is a shining star. They had a sign outside saying they are celebrating their 40th year. read more

This is my favorite Chinese restaurant in the city so decided to come here for dinner with my family. I made a reservation for Saturday at 6:15pm on tock and was pleasantly surprised that there were so many times available. We arrived and it was packed, just as I assumed. We were originally seated at the lowest floor but ended up moving to the 3rd floor since it didn't feel as cramped up there. We ordered a few dishes - salt and pepper crab (my all time favorite), golden supreme fried rice (good wok hei), honey walnut shrimp, baked Chilean sea bass (30 min prep time and came out crispy on the outside and flavorful), and veggies. No complaints on any of the dishes, they were just as tasty as I remembered. The portion of each dish was definitely smaller for the price. Our server was friendly and service was quick for the most part. Great restaurant for a get together with family and friends. Definitely recommend making a reservation if you can to ensure that you don't have to wait long when you arrive, especially on the weekend. An institution in Chinatown for their salt and pepper fried crab, always delicious as they have it down to a science. We also ordered their special beef dish and a beef chow fun. We didn't have to wait too long for a table at lunch time on a Tuesday. We maybe waited 5-10 minutes total and was led downstairs to a smaller room. The restaurant always has great food and a lot of turn over so you can be pretty certain it's fresh. Easy parking if parking at Portsmouth Square as it's just a half block away. Stopped by R & G Lounge in Chinatown around 6:00 PM on a Wednesday. I just walked over from my hotel and grabbed a table, though the place was already filling up fast. The food came out quick. The fried rice was fire--honestly might be the best I've ever had. I also had the sea bass, which was solid, but seeing the salt and pepper crab at every table around me made it clear what the move is for next time. That dish looked incredible. The honey spare ribs were juicy and very sweet. The Singapore Rice noddles was cooked perfectly and loved that their was a mixture or pork,chicken and shrimp mixed into the dish. Food alone deserved a 4 stars, however what was lacking from this establishment was service did not meet standards I am use too. After coming here several times, I finally got around to making a proper review. The wife and I stopped by after work while in the city, and this is one of her favorite restaurants in Chinatown. This place has been around for a long time, and the food doesn't disappoint. There are several dining areas, with the main being underground. Parking is easy right across the street. We ordered four dishes and they were all excellent. Our starter was the crab meat and fish maw soup, a classic that I always order when available. The maw is usually where places screw up, as when it's done poorly, it can be rough and too crunchy. No complaints here. The special beef was very tender, but otherwise unimpressive. It's just not really what I'm into. The steamed clams with egg custard were excellent, and reminded me of Chawanmushi. Our last was the scallop on tofu, and this was one of my favorites. The service was a little slow, but warm and no-nonsense and expected considering how busy they were. The interior is pretty typical of a Chinese restaurant. The place can become quite packed during normal meal hours, so it's best to come early if you want a spot. Portion sizes are great. Overall a great place to eat when in the area. I've yet to try the crab (which is what this place is known for), but will update when I do. read more

First off, parking in this area was a nightmare. And it didn't help that we were here on a Chinese New Year weekend too! The good thing was that my wife and son dropped off so we could make a table reservation (45 minutes wait time) while my daughter and I went looking for parking. It was typical Chinese tasting fare, so I was wondering why the people lined up for this place and waited 45 minutes to be seated and served. For the taste, I think a lot of the plates served were priced just too much. But the staff were very attentive. And the place was nicely decorated. I wanted to treat them since I miss out on a lot of celebrations during the year. My mom chose this place because it's one of her favorite restaurants. I started with a very delicious lychee martini along with the customary tea they put out for the tables. We ordered: - crab and winter melon soup - half Peking duck - Golden Supreme fried rice (with a bit of seafood mixed in) - Hong Kong style beef chow mein - three treasure - eggplant, tofu, and hot peppers with some shrimp paste in a savory black bean sauce - mixed vegetables and mushrooms I thought we ordered very well and slightly more than enough food (perfect) for all of us. It was a good variety without getting into the pricier seafood items, although I would love to come back and have their salt and pepper crab again since it's been soooo long. Fun fact: This is one of the first restaurants my family did a trip for and ate at when I was too young to remember. My parents took me and my brothers on BART from Hayward to SF to eat here a very long time ago and been here a few times while growing up. Tried R&G for my friend's going-away party (large group) and they accommodated us well. Some small mix ups with seating/ordering but the servers were all really patient and helpful. And an overall nice ambience where it's not too fancy nor too casual. Food was excellent! Paired the R&G Special Beef, Sea bass, Peking Duck, and Cumin Lamb with several of the side dishes such as Chow Mein and Fried rice. Most can be shared or served family style. Eating here, I was reminded of the meme that the best Chinese restaurants are rated 3.5 stars, great food but poor atmosphere. Because yes, the R&G dining area was crowded and looked much like my childhood kitchen from the '60's (yellow flowered wallpaper, white ceiling, square-tiled flooring, round metal table and chairs). Yet, the food was delicious.. We had the Prawns with Honey Walnuts, half Peking duck and my wife splurged on the Lobster with Sticky Rice. My favorite turned out to be the Prawns, large, fresh and lightly tempura-battered. The duck, and especially lobster, were messy dishes, made messier by the lack of knives, forks, crackers and mallets I'm used to preparing such dishes with. The duck was chopped, served bone-on, so fingers were necessary to pull apart the meat. Likewise, the lobster was served in pieces and I believe was meant to be cracked although the claw meat was terribly difficult, dare I say painful. to reach. If able we'd have taken the lobster home and properly broken out all the meat. Instead, we left much of the lobster on the plate. Still, a fun place. We enjoyed our meal. read more

I can see why large parties plan events here so they can eat the usual Chinese banquet dishes. $65 Salt & Pepper Dungeness Crab - whole crab battered, deep fried, sprinkled w/ salt & pepper seasoning: great! fresh & succulent fresh crab meat piled high with crispy garlic $50 Chilean Seabass (small) - marinated and baked in a glaze: okay! nice and tender, but due to personal preference I don't love glazed fish that much. Our other friends loved it though. $24 Roast Squab - whole squab roasted, crispy skin, w/ seasoning salt on the side good! crispy skin indeed and quite juicy. Are we calling MSG = seasoning salt now? It does look quite like MSG, which I have nothing against. To me it's just another form of sodium. The tough thing about squab is it is not always easy to split up. Finally got to try this Chinatown staple! We went on a super busy night with no reservation but ended up getting two high chairs on the first level. We enjoyed it, though. Felt quiet and intimate. I had to have some soup to start. Simple and clean, but tasted very delicious and prepared my gut for the heavier stuff I would eat later. Peking duck was delicious. Skin was crispy and nicely done. This was very filling for two people. Our second dish was the macadamia nut with scallop and steak. This was very delicious as well. We had this with white rice. The dish did't have any sauce so the rice was not super necessary. The steak was very coursely peppered and seasoned, while still juicy on the inside. Scallops were big and meaty. I enjoyed chewing on the string beans and chomping on the macadamia nuts. Rare I see macadamia nuts on any menu. My drink was Strong! Perhaps even stronger than my boyfriend's Manhattan. I ordered some cocktail with tequila and that definitely came through. The unfortunate part about dining with two people is not being able to try as many items off the menu. The menu is huge so I recommend coming with a big group. I enjoyed the service and it's clear there are a lot of regulars that go here and are familiar with the wait staff. A bit disappointed with our meal and service yesterday unfortunately. Coming back from Pinole for my sister's wedding dress shopping - we were 20 minutes late to our 2:30pm reservations for 6 people. We understandably waited a few minutes for our table and went downstairs. Imagine our surprise, when the table we were brought to was meant for 4 people and with only 5 chairs and tableware. We were like this isn't comfortable and there's no way the amount of the food we normally order would fit on the table. On top of this our table was rocky which nobody would fix for us. The table next to us were seated for 7 people and they were just as crammed. We ordered the honey spare ribs, two separate times and the amount for each plate was different - just not consistent. My parents had ordered white rice with our food but when our food arrived, we had no rice brought out to us. When it was brought out with the rice bowls, my brother mentioned that the waiters fingers were inside the top bowls - you hope that the hands would be clean but you just never know. There were nice enough to give us fortune cookies at one of my sisters request in addition to the red bean/coconut desserts. I think we were just caught off guard because in the past over the years, we were always treated with such excellent and friendly service and yesterday absolutely did not reflect that. read more

It was my first time to visit (as part of a wedding banquet dinner), and it was easily the best Chinese banquet meal I've been to. The food was the best part, especially the salt and pepper crab, the steak and scallop string bean, and the sea bass. The staff were absolutely fantastic, making sure to take drink orders, fulfill requests for chili oil or more rice, and frequently replace diryy plates, especially to take away the shells. We were sat upstairs, which tightly fit 10 tables of 10. While the speakers were the best quality, it was nice to have access to a microphone and Bluetooth speaker to play your own music. Having the parking garage next to the restaurant was great also, with a $5 validation at the restaurant. Beautiful wedding with an amazing reception thanks to R&G. This is an oldie but goodie. It has been probably over 15 years since we've dined here. It is nice to see a local favorite still so popular and busy after all these years. We were able to make a reservation for nine people on a Saturday night at 5:00 p.m. The restaurant was packed and it took about 15 minutes for them to seat us. They placed us in a private room with the condition that we had to be done by 6:45 p.m. We ordered two of the signature salt and pepper crabs, salt and pepper prawns, R&G special beef, honey spareribs, whole peking duck, garlic pea sprouts, beef chow fun, and the special fried rice. The entree portions other than the crab were small, but there was plenty of food to feed all of us and some for leftovers. Overall, it was a still a pleasant and delightful experience. The food is not as good as I remembered but service and ambiance were nice. I'd probably only come back if invited. I wouldn't go out of my way to come eat here. Parking is available with validation from the restaurant at Portsmouth Square which is less than a block away. The really special treat we got was we saw Henry Winkler dining there! read more

Had a lovely time while out in SF on a work trip in September. For authentic Chinese food you could not ask for a better restaurant. The food was to die for - from the spicy green beans, to the fried rice, and all the delicious mains, all of the food was incredible and flavorful. We had some allergy restrictions (gluten and peanut) and they were amazing about keeping those separate and identifying for us what was safe and not. The ambiance is also part of the appeal. For what looks like a hole in the wall place outside, inside is filled with cultural decorations, and feels very inviting. You come here for the salt and pepper crab, and that is exactly what we did. Also, threw in an order of the pan fried hong kong style noodles. Delicious.
