    Salt & Pepper Dungeness Crab
    Ned I.

I went to R&G Lounge for two reasons: to go to a restaurant in San Francisco's Chinatown and to get the famous salt & pepper Dungeness crab. Upon walking in, I was surprised by the ambiance, as it was nicer inside than I anticipated. Other reviews knock the service for being slow, but R&G just seems to be consistently busy. My wife ordered a mai tai, which was one of the better ones I've had. For my appetizer, I ordered the baby octopus. I personally enjoyed it, but if you get weirded out by texture, I wouldn't recommend it. As for the Dungeness crab, it was good, but I don't think it's worth the price. I could have ate more and spent less had I gotten something else. Regardless, I would definitely go back to R&G.

Always so clean and neat. It is a must visit.

A classic San Francisco establishment - I'll start off with saying that you are paying a premium for the food and service. Our check also had 20% gratuity added automatically be the restaurant for a table of 7. Most dining is underground (downstairs) but there is a bar area upstairs where you can dine in as long as you're okay sitting at high tops. When I went, it looks like they only offered it to people with max table of 2. R&G is known for their Dungeness crab but they have other classic dishes as well if that's not your thing. Only took pictures of 3 dishes but my table ordered 9 (8 dishes + 1 soup). Every dish we had was cooked well and flavorful. You could tell that the chefs and cooks in the kitchen spent had a lot of experience. The servers were also really knowledgeable and ready to give advice and recommendations. I'm not sure if I'll go back soon as I always see R&G as more of a special occasion restaurant but I know that when I do, the food will be delicious and the service excellent.

Came here while in town to chase our love for crabs. Since our usual spot was closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, we were on a quest to find another good crab restaurant. This was the first we thought of as our friend repeatedly recommended this. Sorry to say, I think Vancouver Cantonese restaurants are many notches better. The crab was super coated with flour and then fried. The crab fat, all crusted with flour and hardened, that I wasn't able to enjoy any bit of it. I'd rather taste the garlic bits than the crispy flour. We also ordered a Mixed Vegetables with Mushroom but portion is very small. Our quest continues... Ambiance is typical of Chinatown restaurants, quite old, a vintage look. **They do validate $5 off of your parking ticket when you order $60 and more.

Overall the best Cantonese seafood restaurant in the city with delicious food, exceptional service (Ken was very attentive, friendly and gave great recommendations ), busy vibes and clean dining room.

Tasty Chinese food! I really enjoyed the salt and pepper green beans - they were fried so a very unique take on a classic dish. The egg plant dish was also unique where they layered in a fish in it too. One downside- the ordering the food arrived was awkward. They brought out the mango sago (dessert) as the 2nd item and brought out the fried rice dish as the last item, much after all the protein dishes. It would have been better to eat the protein dishes with the fried rice. Staff were friendly! We walked in at 6pm on a Friday and waited ~15mins.

Located in Chinatown, parking can easily be found at Portsmouth Square Garage which is practically next door to R & G. Moreover, R & G offers a validation which reduces your parking cost. Before seeing the SF Ballet, our party of 10 ordered the following: winter melon soup crab peking duck prawns with candied walnuts fried rice beef mushrooms with Chinese broccoli eggplant complimentary dessert - agar agar red bean Everyone enjoyed their food. When the bill came, we were charged twice for the crab, but the error was quickly rectified. At the time of ordering, the waiter was unsure whether 1 crab would be enough for the 10 of us, but one was enough and we didn't need the second one. As for atmosphere, it was a bit humble, yet typical of old Chinatown.

On a recent trip to San Francisco, my friend and I were craving good Chinese food after a long road trip and afternoon of sightseeing. We tried to do a little research, but things were closing on the early side. A friend suggested this restaurant that he had dined out with his family went in town. We arrived about half hour before closing, and the place was huge. There was a bar, bar area and it appeared to have at least 3 to 4 dining rooms on multiple levels. It was very lively and full. They told us they didn't have a table, but we absolutely begged and agreed to order within five minutes. This was no problems since we had already looked at the menu before arriving. Everything looked and smelled so good at the other tables that we just had to try the Peking Duck. It was crispy, juicy and fantastic with the scallions and bow, as well as as the hoisin sauce. I've been craving this dish for a long time and the restaurant fulfilled all my cravings. We ordered the seafood garlic noodle. They said they were out of crab, but still charged us the full price. I think it's a personal thing but for me the noodles were too thick and I didn't get much garlic flavor. It also had quite a small amount of seafood although the shrimp and scallops inside were on the large side. I missed the crab. The mixed vegetable dish with mushrooms was so fresh and had such a lovely combination of vegetables. It even had lotus root, and everything was cooked to perfection. I think on par with the duck my favorite dish was the eggplant with garlic sauce. The menu said it was spicy, but for me, it was not too spicy. It had bamboo shoots, black mushrooms, scallions, and other mouthwatering seasonings. The eggplant looked caramelized, but was so tender inside. I could eat this every night if I lived closer or even in town.! We ordered dessert in advance, which was the mango Sago. It tasted like it had mango and pomelo along with the tapioca in a mango flavored pudding. We all loved it. We got there when they were closing, but I found the service to be a little abrupt. They were loudly banging dishes as they were cleaning tables, and they were rushing us, and also forgetting things we kept asking for. However, the food more than made up for it. San Francisco definitely has excellent Chinese food and this place is a shining star. They had a sign outside saying they are celebrating their 40th year.

This is my favorite Chinese restaurant in the city so decided to come here for dinner with my family. I made a reservation for Saturday at 6:15pm on tock and was pleasantly surprised that there were so many times available. We arrived and it was packed, just as I assumed. We were originally seated at the lowest floor but ended up moving to the 3rd floor since it didn't feel as cramped up there. We ordered a few dishes - salt and pepper crab (my all time favorite), golden supreme fried rice (good wok hei), honey walnut shrimp, baked Chilean sea bass (30 min prep time and came out crispy on the outside and flavorful), and veggies. No complaints on any of the dishes, they were just as tasty as I remembered. The portion of each dish was definitely smaller for the price. Our server was friendly and service was quick for the most part. Great restaurant for a get together with family and friends. Definitely recommend making a reservation if you can to ensure that you don't have to wait long when you arrive, especially on the weekend. I'm glad that the quality remains the same after all these years.

We've been here several times over the past 20+ years. The food was more expensive, but was better than our last visit. The lobster fried rice and Peking duck were good. They serve lunch, but not dim sum.

I was able to come try this spot during the weekday. Their beef was very good but the prices are definetly on the higher end for their dishes. The crab which is what they're known for is sold at market value and when we went we were told the dish is around $70. During the weekday, there was no wait time to get dinner.

Stopped by R & G Lounge in Chinatown around 6:00 PM on a Wednesday. I just walked over from my hotel and grabbed a table, though the place was already filling up fast. The food came out quick. The fried rice was fire--honestly might be the best I've ever had. I also had the sea bass, which was solid, but seeing the salt and pepper crab at every table around me made it clear what the move is for next time. That dish looked incredible. Definitely coming back to run it again. They make a solid old fashion too. Would have given them 5 stars but the vibe/atmosphere was meh.

I also appreciate the free peanuts and cucumber salad that you get when you're seated. My boyfriend and I ordered a lot of food because we wanted to try so many things! The lamb skewer was super moist and had a nice flavor. The XO escargot with milkbread had a nice buttery, garlic taste. The milk bread was fluffy and when dipped in the sauce it tasted very rich. We also got the clay pot rice and it reminded me of when I had it in China. The rice was crispy at the bottom and well seasoned. My favorite dish of the night was the squab. It was cooked excellently and the skin was really crispy. The five spice powder on the side really brought out the flavor of the meat. The eggplant was cooked well and portion was good but it didn't stand out as much as the other dishes. Overall, I would visit this place again. It definitely lives up to the hype. Honestly, I think I have to readjust my expectations for the SF food scene. If there were no wait/reservation, I would think of this as a very solid restaurant (hence the 4 stars). The beef chow fun is on par with ones I'd get in NYC Chinatown, and was actually not very overpriced. Our server was very sweet but only recommended things that my friend did not love (seafood/spicy food). I was excited for the spicy cabbage, hoping it'd be comparable to the addictive spicy cabbage at Uluh (NYC). I was disappointed. The popcorn chicken was a bit dry; I would not get it again. The mapo spaghetti had heat, but not much flavor, and it was okay for me - worth getting because it sounded intriguing, but fell short of my expectations, especially since I've made mapo udon, mapo ramen, and mapo pie at home that were better. The escargots with milk bread was definitely my favorite; sourcing escargot alone is a plus and it was very well-executed. The milk bread was fantastic, pillowy and soft. Our server was very nice and offered to move us to the cute window seats after we were already seated at the counter, which I really appreciated. However, would I spend energy trying to get a reservation here or waiting in line? Absolutely not. It makes me sad to think that this is the pinnacle of Cantonese food in this city full of Cantonese people, but I guess it makes me extra appreciate food in NYC.

Portions are pretty big and prices are surprisingly good! -House pan fried noodle (4.5/5): Delicious and crispy noodles with not an overwhelming amount of sauce, savory and came with lots of chicken and shrimp, did get kinda salty at the end -Chicken and salted fish fried rice (4/5): moist, flavorful, and not overly salty. Lots of chicken with a little salted fish, could've used more wok hei taste -Salt and pepper rock cod fillet (4/5): thick and moist pieces with a slight crisp, nicely seasoned and flavorful though a bit salty -Beef stew clay pot with bean curd & mushroom (3.5/5): beef was tender and moist, saucy but kinda plain so needed more flavor

We ordered : - Braised beef wonton noodle soup : noodles had that perfect springy bite, the broth was light , well seasoned & comforting. The braised beef was melt in your mouth tender, and the wontons were fresh, plump, and juicy. Everything was on point. - Fish porridge : I appreciate that the congee is not too soupy/ watered down. It was hearty and fish was delicately cooked just right, not dry or rubbery like some places. - Curry fish balls with pork rind : Good side dish, nicely seasoned with a spicy kick which we loved. Parking was relatively easy, there's metered spots across the street. Service was fast & efficient, the aunty who served us was super friendly and on top of everything. The interior is clean and comfy with a chill, welcoming vibe. Definitely planning to return, especially for another bowl of that beef noodle soup!

We ordered 8 items and everything was top quality, but my favorites were: - Ribeye XO "Dan Dan" mein with sesame sauce - Berkshire pork Shanghai soup dumplings (XLB) - Crispy shrimp & meat tofu skin roll It's a small restaurant and was super busy when we went around 11:40am on a Sunday, but luckily we were seated immediately when we walked in. Service was very friendly and efficient. Our server also helped refill our teapot with hot water when we finished the first pot. I really enjoyed the meal here and will definitely be back to try the dinner menu next time!

I was able to get a walk-in table for dinner on a Sunday evening. The restaurant is pretty small,…read moreand the service was great. I will say, the restaurant felt a bit... drab. There was no music playing and it felt like everyone was whispering at their tables because it felt weird to talk at a normal volume. The interior design also does not match the quality/price of the food - I really think this place could use a redesign and new paint job... Anyway, the food overall was good, but definitely on the pricey side. We got two items off the seasonal menu - a spicy shrimp wonton starter, and the country fried rice. The wontons were good, but not spicy, and the fried rice was really good. It definitely could have used some chili oil on top, but was still good as it was served. The food also came out pretty quickly and was a great temperature. We also got the spicy string beans. They were alright, but not much better than any other dim sum restaurant's. Our total after tax & tip was about $100 for two people, with just two starters, one main dish, and a single beer. This definitely feels high for the quality/quantity of the food, but the great service helps makes up for this. I would say if this place got a redesign and lowered the prices a bit, it would be booked up every day.

But didn't love this dish. Maybe it needed the chili sauce accompanying this dish to elevate the flavors, however, the sauce was really spicy! Too spicy for me to eat with the dumplings. Felt like there wasn't enough filling to skin ratio. There was so much skin, that I used alot of the soy sauce which I typically don't typically use. - Taro Shrimp Cake (5/5) I was worried that this was overly fried by its appearance. The exterior was perfectly fried while the interior maintained airy yet springy texture. Great flavor with and without the sauce. - GDY Cantonese Roast Duck Ordered a half and bone-in duck with the rice and garlic green which was enough for 2 people. The duck was moist, flavorful and not fatty. The duck was good on its own but the accommodating two sauces... plum vinaigrette and duck au jus were both amazing. I loved the plum vinaigrette with the duck and the duck au jus with the rice. Definitely more expensive than the chinese bbq spots but dishes tasted clean and not greasy. I also really enjoyed their house tea. It was a hot pu erh tea with a hint of lychee. The service was friendly and not rushed despite the growing waitlist. I would definitely return for just the duck.

Restaurant is not as decorated as bright Chinese restaurant, it on a darker side modern style. Once walk into the restaurant staffs are welcoming, take our name name even we have no reservation. We wait around 30mins we got our table. It's exactly the time we were told to come back. (Recommended to make reservations) We got deboned half duck, make it easier to eat, skin is crispy and meaty, it is Cantonese duck. Crispy and bbq pork combo, crispy skin for pork belly, cha siu is not over sweet. All of three of the Cantonese trio must order and they do run out. Fish sauce chicken wings are crispy, a bit sweet and savory, little sticky favorful. Nice Melons has very interesting favor, it's seems watermelon with salty sauce peanut strong garlic favor. I liked it but not for my kid OG Charsiu Noodles, it is good, it is OG, noodle is not over cook its chewy not soft. Rice and green of course we need because Char siu and Roasted duck it's a combo with rice and duck fat vegetable. A plus, homemade soft serve, sweet cream soft serve tasted like white rabbit candy, chocolate soft serve also good.
