We ordered : - Braised beef wonton noodle soup : noodles had that perfect springy bite, the broth was light , well seasoned & comforting. The braised beef was melt in your mouth tender, and the wontons were fresh, plump, and juicy. Everything was on point. - Fish porridge : I appreciate that the congee is not too soupy/ watered down. It was hearty and fish was delicately cooked just right, not dry or rubbery like some places. - Curry fish balls with pork rind : Good side dish, nicely seasoned with a spicy kick which we loved. Parking was relatively easy, there's metered spots across the street. Service was fast & efficient, the aunty who served us was super friendly and on top of everything. I have been on a wonton (noodle) kick lately and searching for a good bowl has been kind of been tricky. If I like the wontons, I don't always like the noodles or the how the noodles were prepared. Well, my first time here and I love my entire bowl of wonton noodle soup! It was delicious! The wontons are plump and delicious. The noodles are cooked just right, al dente with lots of chew. Eat this immediately when it comes out the kitchen with a little dash of white pepper and some (soy sauce) and vinegar, perfection! The iced lemon tea was okay. Forgot to let the waitress (maybe the boss lady ?) know that I don't want it sweetened but that was my bad, so I drank half. The boss had some language issues with another customer, so forgot to put my order in until 20 minutes later after she gave me my drink. Newer Chinese restaurant opened up next to another Chinese restaurant we take out alot from. First thing I saw when I walked in was another diner having chicken curry. Well that was easy, checked the menu and they had beef stew curry, slam dunk! They also had pig's feet, double slam dunk!! Their menu had a good assortment of comfort foods on the menu like won tons and other noodle dishes. Of course I ordered the beef stew curry fully expecting the yellow curry that was served with the chicken but what a great surprise, the curry was a different one that i've never had before. They explained that the dishes are all cooked individually so they are allowed to vary how each dish is cooked. The dishes came out as they were cooked so nothing is cooled down like other restaurants that wait until the total service is ready for the the entire table which means in most cases someone's dish is coming out cold, I do hate when restaurants do that. Luckily most asian restaurants don't follow the way america restaurants serve food. The server was prompt in taking the orders and every dish was cooked to order and not serving pre cooked food other than dishes that require a longer cook time like the pigs feet. The pigs feet is a must order dish, it was super tender and oh so good. The curry beef stew is another dish definitely worth a try, I sure will reorder it. I am always extremely interested in ANY restaurant with a small menu (for them, less than 10 dishes). Finally, I am here and a little disappointed. Ordered: - poached kidney and pork liver. They are pre-poached (mainly to save time) and reheat again when ordered. With the purpose of not overcooking them in the 2nd time, I now have a plate of luke warm innards. Being a Cantonese grew up in Canton, luke warm food is the worst nightmare because who knows what condition they are under and how long. I seriously doubt the Cantonese owners are ok with any luke warm food they eat in restaurants other than theirs. This is a pure Cantonese dish and not many of Cantonese restaurants in the bay can make it well. Hing Lung in San Bruno is the best so far and I'm sure YZJ's owners know them too. I really should stop here for this dish because it's just wasting everyone's time when certain basic standard is not met and not cared. - the famous fishball and pork skin curry. TBH, I can taste it's mixed from one of the popular Thai yellow curry paste tub that I used in the past. I was right and saw it on their shelf later. The dish is ok and has a quite spicy aftertaste that sort of attack your throat (with a hint of bitterness). -Lastly, the wonton noodle. Great to see the noodle is carefully sourced (not many of them are these days) and the soup base is made deliciously with 地鱼 (the kind of dry dish you use to make wonton soup). Then, a huge surprise that the 地鱼power is not used within the wonton. The power is the thing to make the wonton tastes like wonton & delicious IMO. Why????!!! With a huge question mark on my forehead, I drained the soup. The owner is quite ambitious and opened a 2nd bigger restaurant in San Mateo within less than a year (bigger menu with dim sum). Not sure how they picked this SF location with so little Cantonese population. All these 10 items are super Cantonese typical dishes. And the bad news is next door just recently open a normal Chinese restaurant with regular sweet and sour everything. Don't get me wrong. People are willing to drive far for delicious food (man, how many times I think about HL in SB on their liver dish and cilantro chong fun.I live in east bay and I do drive that far for food I dream about whenever I feel strong). Sadly the ambition on opening the 2nd restaurant really can't match the ambition on their food at this point. read more

Yongzi Ji Restaurant is in the space that was formerly Mikado Sushi on Bryant at 16th Street. This is truly a hidden gem. I learned about it on two different Facebook groups that I am a member of. After seeing multiple posts, we just had to try it!! I've been searching for a new, good won ton place as my favorite one closed a while ago. I ordered the BBQ Pork Won Ton Noodle Soup and I was delighted!! The BBQ pork was thinly sliced and very tasty. The won tons (you get six of them) were good sized with a large shrimp (very fresh and sweet) and seasoned ground pork. The soup was very flavorful without being overly salty. Some places that make this dish have broth with little or no taste or very sodium ladened. The noodles were very thin and perfectly al dente. My hubby ordered the Rice Congee with Fish and Preserved Egg. The fish (was like the pressed fish balls but made into two inch segments/chunks) was very fresh, the porridge was smooth, and well seasoned. He said it hit the spot. The service was excellent; our order was taken within minutes of us sitting down. The wait staff was cordial, welcoming, friendly and informed us of items that were available/off menu and very popular. The food arrived very promptly.
