Wow! I was pretty delighted with everything that I ate here. Now I'm no expert on Cuban food, but I will say that everything I ate here was super tasty - especially all the flavorful and super well-seasoned meat. The ropa vieja, in particular, will probably be something that I regularly eat in my dreams. I have, however, had a lot of Cafe Cubano in my lifetime and I have to say that the Cafe Cubano here is among the best. I come here for the fresh mariquitas (plantain chips), with the garlic oil, but I ask for it on the side because otherwise it's way too greasy and makes them a little soggy at the bottom. The tostones are pretty solid, but probably my favorite is the Cuban coffee and their beans. I've tried a few sandwiches and they are good but personally I've found them a bit greasy and salty, though from what I understand a lot of the ingredients to Cuban food do make it inherently that way. I will start this off by letting you know I am Cuban and picky when it comes to good Cuban food. I took a date to this restaurant about a year or more ago when I was visiting Houston, TX for work. Growing up Cuban in Texas, I have always been on the search for good Cuban Cuisine that can rival what my family can make at home or in Miami. Let me say, this place is the best Cuban Restaurant I have been to in Texas. I only wish it was in Austin, TX!!! Many times you find that "Caribbean Restaurants" skimp on the process. One of the most basic dishes for all Cubans is Ropa Vieja. This is a favorite of almost all Cubans. With this dish, it is all about the flavors. The dish needs to be prepared in advance, at least a number of hours to a full day before served. This gives the meat the time to soak in all the flavors of the sauce. To many places skip this process. The meat comes out with no flavor, or is even dry and not moist. Other folks will try to add vinegar to fancy it up (Don't DO THIS EVER PLEASE). Cafe Piquet does it right!!! It is the best Ropa Vieja I have ever had in a restaurant, aside from Molina's in Hialeah, FL. The restaurant was quite busy when I took this date to her first Cuban food experience. We were sat in a cozy back corner of the restaurant. The staff was attentive and on point. She had one of their shrimp dishes, and I had the Ropa Vieja. We shared with each other and both were wonderful. She loved the food, wine, and ambiance of the place. We had a wonderful time. Didn't work out with the girl, but I still walk away happy after this find! I have referred a number of friends in H-Town and my brother to Cafe Piquet. Brought my mom here for lunch and we loved it. We were seated right away and brought water and bread with butter. If the bread is good, you know the food is about to be good LOL. My mom decided to order the Small Appetizer Sampler which comes with 2 croquetas, 1 tamal, 2 empandas, and 1 papa rellena. The waiter mentioned that a lot of people order that as their meal because you get to try a little of everything. I ordered a Cafe Cubano and the waiter made sure to mention that it was the small espresso which I thought was nice. For my meal I got the Vaca Frita, white rice, beans, and fried yucca with mojo. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. It was all delicious! Perfectly seasoned, hot, and just so good. The portion is pretty large so I had some left over. The only reason I come here is when I'm jonesing for Cuban Food. I've tried this place four times in 3 years. This last time is the final time. Every time I've come her they've sat me and other people I am with near the Entrance. (See Pic) Where there are no other customers. The service every single time has been extremely slow. They never come to refill drinks. They don't ask us how the food is. The manager/owner will look across the room at empty glasses and not Even try to refill your glass. Even when the entire wait staff is occupied or nowhere around. I came here the last time with a Groupon. I had already seen the menu on line so I knew what I wanted. They had Red snapper fried or grilled. So when I got there it was a quick order. I place the order then 2 minutes later the waiter tells me they have No Red Snapper. Mind you this is the Lunch hour. They just opened the place. They have Four Menu items they have Red Snapper. If you're going to have an item on the menu 4 times...for Pete's Sake have it available. I ended up getting the Paloma Steak with Rice beans and Plantains. The Rice was Dry and then they gave me two tablespoons of black beans...HAHAHAHA. We love this place! Always friendly staff and excellent food. We frequently eat here and it's very consistent.

I have been here many times and have always had a great expedience and good food. Parking is never an issue and getting a seat has never been a problem. I typically visit on a Friday or Saturday evening around dinner time. I always order the snapper, plantain, and white rice. They have beer and wine but not much of a beer selection which is okay. I've been coming to this joint for almost 20 years now. I've heard Neli no longer owns the place, but that hasn't affected my feelings about the place. It tastes just as good as it always has from the top sirloin I get, to the beans, the mojo, the sangria, the tres leches-Everything! Some of you don't get the fuss. It's Cuban. It's comfort. I want to give Cafe Piquet a 3 and 1/2 stars, but that isn't an option. The food was good just not amazing. Maybe I ordered the wrong thing. I ordered the Pollo a la Plancha, which is the grilled chicken topped with onions. For a grilled entree, the food was incredibly greasy. I also didnt taste that much flavor in the chicken. Someone else at my table ordered the pork and plantains sandwich, and they enjoyed their meal. I did enjoy the bread that they serve with the meal. Also, the water comes with a lime instead of a lemon. That was a different and nice twist. The service was friendly and attentive on the day I stopped by. The restaurant was also clean. Our table was not provided with the complimentary bread & butter and when we told the waiter about it, he deliberately lied and said that we have to ask for it . This place rocks!!! I'm a huge fan of Cuban food, and so should you. What is there not to like about Cuban food, especially when it's offered by a great place as Cafe Piquet. Cafe Piquet offers traditional Cuban food at pretty reasonable prices. On this particular Friday night visit, and first I must add, the place was not packed at all, which was a bit surprising since the food was really good. For starters, we had the Mariquitas, it's deep fried plantain chips smothered in a lot of fresh garlic. No joke..when I say a lot. It was hard trying to stop chomping on the delicious chips after the first bite. An order of these chips is plenty for a group of 4. We also had the Cuban bread with butter, complimentary by the way. They came out nice and toasty. For the main dish I had the picadillo. It's ground beef season with Cuban spices, with small dices of potatoes simmered slowly in red wine. It's like a Cuban version of sloppy joe. Traditionally, meals are served with black beans and rice, and fried plantains. The black beans aren't just any black beans, they are simmered in something which packs a lot flavor. The plantains give a nice touch of sweetness to counter balance the richness of the meal. If picadillo isn't what you're looking for, they offer an array of other menu items from chicken, pork, beef, seafood, and of course cuban sandwhiches. To round out the wonderful meal, we had the tres leche cake. The cake was wonderful, it was not too sweet and soggy, but the size of the cake was bit on the smaller side. The meal itself made up for any deficiency. Our waiter was very friendly and attentive. The outdoor seating was a nice option when the weather is cooperating but the lighting was bit dimmed which made it a bit difficult to see the menu. I think the five stars say it all- I really like this place! While I lived in Florida so, I had a lot of delicious encounters with Cuban cuisine so I think I have a good sense for Cuban food, and this place is GOOD. Probably the best Cuban food in Houston. The Food: So fresh, a lot of variety with the entrees and the sides, and the PRICES. The most expensive food that you'll find on the menu is $25. The portions are a good size. If this is your first time trying Cuban food, I would recommend getting the sampler entrees because you get signature sides and meat, and just a bit of everything but not in excess. And since it's a sampler if you didn't fancy one thing, there will be something in the sampler that you do like. My favorite side are Platanos Maduros (fried ripe plantains). Anything and everything on the seafood section, and beef section is worthy of your tastebuds. Ambiance: It's really roomy inside. Cuban decor covers the walls, and the Cuban music gently in the background. The area around it's near Bellaire. Parking: Good. All the times I've ever been no problem finding a spot, and it's free. The service was pretty good too, and they small talk with you, they don't check on you so, so often, but I kinda like that. So you ask them for water and refills when you need it. I've been to this place a few times and I love it. They bring out bread and butter for you to start with and its so tasty! The guayabana and the guava juice drink is so good! I love the drinks they have there. I've ordered the empanadas de carne as appetizer and its really yummy. For the entree i've ordered the carnaval cubano which is a sampler plate of different food on the plate. Tastes so scrumptious!! As sides ive had the yucca frita con mojo, platanos modoros, moros/congri, and tostones. All of what i've ordered were all delicious! I am always a big fan of the independent establishments. And when the food is delicious it is like uncovering a gem. I am not a Cuban cuisine expert but I love what I have found at this place. Service is slow sometimes but it is worth the wait. They have a really nice patio. I had a great time at this place. I was really looking forward to trying Cuban food. I had the pollo with a side of maduros, arroz, y frijoles negros. The combo is sort of one of my favorite combos so it would have been hard to mess up. However to be honest the rice was missing something. I poured some picante on my rice to give it an extra kick and I think that solved the problem. Nonetheless the maduros (fried plantains) were delicious! I was very satisfied with my side item.
