First impression, very Cuban. Anything after that just went down hill. I felt unwelcome, not sure if it was how I looked or my race. The waiter stunned when I walked in. I was looking forward to garbanzo soup, instead, I got white bean soup. It was full of boiled potatoes and about 10 beans. I ordered Cuban coffee and grilled chicken sandwich to go. This is my favorite Cuban spot for over 20 years! The food is INCREDIBLY DELICIOUS. I had them cater my birthday party last year. My favorites are mariquitas (thin plantain chips w/ minced garlic on top), the beef empanadas are the best I've ever had, the Ropa Vieja is out of this world- it comes with black beans and rice w/ sweet plantains. I decided to go here since it is a popular Cuban restaurant to go to. This was also my first time having Cuban food, and the pictures looked like the food would be tasty to an extent. I tried the ropa vieja knowing that the sides are simple. The meat was some of the leanest beef I've had in my life, almost tough. Flavor profile extends to the slight tanginess of the tomato and wine sauces it is cooked in. But the texture of the rice and beans against the toughness of the meat did not mix well. Besides a Cuban sandwich , some of the bakeries I love in Miami and the oxtails and avocado salad I get from a cuban place elsewhere I dont know a whole lot about cuban food. BUT the places ive gone in those other states are so packed with flavors that I can never forget them. This was my first dish here by recommendation pf the waiter. I am giving it a 3 because it wasn't bad, but didn't blow me away at all. The rice and beans were a little on the cold side. Plantains were okay and as expected I guess. The beef was somewhat tender, and the dish is something I could've made at home with much more favor (so Im a little bias that way). When i eat out, i want something I cant make. My husband and I came here for our little World Tour of Food dates and in honor of Hispanic/LatinX Heritage Month, we got Cuban food! It was absolutely phenomenal. Customer service blew us both away. We were greeted by complimentary bread and whipped butter and for drinks, my husband ordered a sangria and I ordered a Cuba Libre (rum, Coke, lime). We ordered the queso frito con guayaba (fried cheese with a guava sauce for a sweet kick). For entrees, we got the vegetarian platter and ropa vieja (a popular Cuban dish). Let me tell you something... A mom from Cuba promised to bring me some good Cuban food. She brought me a to-go box filled with tamales, empanadas, croquetas and papas rellenas! Oh my God, it was sooooooo good. It wasn't even hot and it was so good. I tell you, Cuban food is so bomb! They season they food like black folks and I love it!!! My only suggestion is presentation. Been coming here for about 3 years, both for dine in and to-go. Ordered 4 empanadas asked for sauce they only gave me 2 so I asked the girl to give me another two. She looks at me funny, then proceeds to get the sauce then she tells me she'll give me one for free but next time they'll be a dollar each. A dollar for like a tablespoon of sauce??? My boyfriend also orders from here all the time and when he asks for extra sauce they give it to him no questions asked. I had a vendor come in from California and I had to take her out for lunch or dinner per the boss.. she was craving some Cuban food cause she missed the taste of home and there aren't very many Cuban spots on the west coast. We were seated and served right away - bread and butter for the table! I ordered the picadillo and the empanada! The empanada were crispy, filled with lots of meat and that sauce had some heat to it! I thought it tasted a lot like taco meat but apparently the meats are prepared a bit differently in Cuban cuisine! Excuse my inexperience! I learned a lot during this meal on Cuban foods and how they're prepared and what dishes are traditional! Everything comes with rice and beans.. and they're big on yucca aka cassava! My coworker ordered the Ropa Vieja - a Cuban stewed meat. Flavorful and delicious.. as was my Picadillo.. I liked both dishes! My vendor ordered the Pernil and I loved the flavors of the roasted pork with garlic! Light but flavorful - I would try this dish next time I come back! HOUSTON IS BLESSED with this inconspicuous Cuban restaurant in the Bellaire/Meyerland nook. Nestled between 69 and 610, this area is often overlooked. Drove out to try this place and it did not disappoint. Upon entering, it felt like you were walking into a Cuban home. The ambiance was incredibly warm and inviting. You could see the regulars, the family dinners, and the parties. Every server we encountered was beyond kind and all of them were enthusiastic about explaining the menu items. That's when you know you've stumbled upon a truly amazing restaurant. The joy of the food is felt all the way from the kitchen to the servers. Opted for the small cuban appetizer sampler (2 croquetas, 1 tamal, 2 empanadas, 1 papa rellena) and the Carnaval Cubano entree. (ropa vieja, masitas, boliche) This was more than enough for two people but the food was SO DAMN GOOD. We got through most of the meal. The appetizer was perfect. Everything was extremely creamy and the pastry was super delicate. The tamale was a bit dry but that was easily overlooked. Honestly- the appetizer could feed two people contently. But that wasn't our mission. On to entree. The Caranaval Cubano. The ropa vieja stole the show. Moist, tender, saucy. The masitas (fried pork chunks) were slightly tough but flavorful. The boliche (beef roast pressed into a circle) was equal in taste to the ropa vieja with subtle differences in spices. I came in for my first time, expecting a hole in the wall, instead, I'm greeted with a very clean and awesome hidden gem!
