The rating is for Ropa Vieja only as I haven't tried other foods. Ropa Vieja is very tasty and homey. It's shredded beef stew in wine tomato-ey sauce. It's a must if you haven't tried it here. The entree comes with rice, bean soup and a side of your choice (waiter will recommend plantain/ maduros). I took 1 star off because they took away lunch menu which was $3-4 cheaper for the same dish. My bill was around $20 with taxes and tips, quite high for lunch. We haven't been to Cafe Piquet in about 3 years. Today, as we were in the area. We decided to eat here. What a disappointment! The quality of the food is terrible. I ordered the pan con bistec, the bistec had a funny smell and was extremely dry and hard to eat. The papitas in the sandwich tasted old, very old. We ordered the chicken for our son, and the chicken was extremely dry, which made it very hard to eat. Our youngest ordered the sliders, and again, it was bread with a piece of super dry meat. No mayo, ketchup or anything. The pan con bistec used to be my favorite, what I ordered every time I came to this place. My husband's vaca frita was very bland. What happened? I recently visited this Cuban themed restaurant for lunch on a Sunday. As I walked in, I immediately liked the interior decor. It gave me an good vibe with its Latin/Cuban structure, art and colors. After being seated, I chose the traditional Ropa Viejas ($13.99) and soon thereafter a nice bread basket with butter arrived to start. Within 15 minutes my entree arrived along with my chosen sides plantains and Congri. Congri is a mixture of white rice, black beans with a little bit of ham thrown in. The Ropa Viejas was, of course, shredded beef slow cooked in a tomato and wine sauce. It was delicious. I liked the full bodied flavor that the tomato and wine sauce brought to the dish that made it a delight to eat. I thought the plantains were also very good with their soft texture and taste. While the Congri looked good on the plate, I thought it was too dry for my tastes. Had it been more moist, I would order it again however if I return will probably try one of their other sides. Table service was good. All in all, I had a pleasant meal here and would be happy to return for my Cuban fix. read more

We used to live in the Bellaire/Gulfton area and have eaten often at Cafe Piquet. We recently ate at Versailles, one of the top Cuban restaurants in Miami, and Cafe Piquet is on par, if not better! Moist rice and tender meats, warm ambiance.. yeah, we think this place serves better food than one of the best Cuban restaurants in Florida and that is saying a lot!! We ordered our cocktails first, I was a little hesitant as many establishments use a lot of gimlet in their mojitos and not fresh lime, but the bartenders nailed the portions and ingredients of the drinks! Perfect muddling of mint, not too sweet and not too tangy with a good pour of Bacardi! The pina colada was great too! Then came the appetizers! The Croquetas de Jamón were melt in your mouth. For our entrees, the plantains were cooked to perfection, sweet and tender. The congri was fantastic! And if you separated out the rice and beans you will notice the perfect consistency of rice as well. Large portions, which we are always wins in our book! My only critique would be that the meat was a bit dry. We also had dessert with fried guava and ice cream! We will 100% be back!! The service was great! Our water glasses were never empty. All of our requests were filled with joy! They remembered the birthday request we had! Top notch! Also, a little tip, they have a great happy hour! Mojitos are $5 and carajillo's $4!! Delicious! Wow, what a wonderful place my sister brought us to for dinner. The plantain chips were overflowing and delicious, but plantain chips always are! The tostones were very good. The Masitas (fried pork chunks) were amazing. As we cut into them they fell apart and were so tender and flavorful. Their visual appeal isn't great, but that was made up for in their flavor and being cooked to perfection. My sister really enjoyed her beef dish. The waitstaff is attentive and gave suggestions when we told them it was out first time there. I had no idea there was so much garlic in Cuban food. I don't know if that's typical or something specific to this restaurant, but be warned. I am not a fan of garlic so I had to work around that, but it's doable. This was my first time at the spot. Someone took me out to lunch and I had never heard of it. On arrival I thought it was a great start in appearance. I walked in and I didn't disappoint. Even with Covid bad to move around tables but it still looked lovely. Sat down to these amazing plantain chips and garlic sauce dip. (I was 5 min late) I proceeded to scan the QR code on the table for the menu pan everything looks so appetizing it was a hard decision. The amazing waitress came by I had already had water at the table so she asked what we were going to order. Neither of us had a clue so she offered us to taste the specials which one both Great and head a great amount of flavor. We both ended up choosing something different though because we wanted something more hearty. When I receive my food all my goodness what a nice amount and upon every bite it was amazing. I also got Columbian coffee which was my first time having. It gives a great kick and sweetness. Now to the customer service my waitress was on it I have no problems, there was another lady that came through with water and kept that full. I've eaten here several times and I grew up with the Piquets back in the 70s, today's food and service was lacking to say the least. I have to admit I was there about a year ago and the food was great. Service is great so I guess it's really gone downhill in the past year or just a bad day I don't know but they need to pick up a re-examine what they need to do for service.
