food gets 5 stars, service gets 0. we were 5 minutes early for our reservation and had to wait 20 minutes to get seated, watching party after party get seated before us. after we were seated, we waited 10 minutes more before we were greeted by our server, Louis, who lacked any sort of personality or charisma. he barely checked in on us, didn't make any conversation, only barely answered our questions. and on top of all of this, NONE OF THE KITCHEN COOKS WERE WEARING MASKS. NOT ONE. we were completely nervous to eat our food. we won't be back for a long long time, until provençal gets their act together. read more

I don't take kindly to being stolen from. Couple that with below average food and you have earned a 1 star rating. I phoned in an order to-go from their lunch menu, I went with the reuben sandwich. Their website says it is has been voted best reuban in St. Louis and fail to list who voted it such. Perhaps by family and friends? Because no one else would vote it "best" anything. I was told my order would be ready in 10 minutes, so I showed up in 10 minutes as my office is nearby. My order wasn't ready for another 8 minutes past that. Now in most circumstances I would gloss over this, but this is my LUNCH break. Saying an order will be ready and being wrong about it is completely unacceptable. Strike 1. I looked at my receipt and they charged me $11 for the sandwich while their website currently says it is $10. I didn't complain about it because I'm not that type of guy, but I don't like being tricked. Strike 2. The reuben sandwich tastes BAD, and there is more saur kraut on it than meat. Just look at the picture I uploaded! Yuck. Instead of swiss cheese (as is traditionally used on reubens) they use Gruyere cheese which I don't think goes as well. They also use a Red Rouquefort Dressing, which I really couldn't stand. It just doesn't taste good. They also have trouble with spelling. On their website they call it a "rueben" but it's actually supposed to be "reuben." As for the Gruyere cheese, between their lunch and dinner menus they spell it right once, but also spell it as "Gruyree" and "Greyer." So they have a lack of detail clearly. I know, I know, words are hard. Strike 3. The next day I checked my card transactions and found a charge of $14.34 from this place. Now how can that be? Okay, so it was supposed to be $10 and they charged me $11, I know, and then tax which brought the total to about $12. This means they had to have added a tip. I intentionally did not tip them, so this would be theft. NOT okay. Strike.... 4??? Yes, strike 4 damnit. Screw this place, never coming back. Before they tricked me into paying more for my lunch than their website said I'd have to pay, and before they stole from me, I was going to give them 2 stars based primarily on the bad tasting food, but was going to give them another try. But now? ABSOLUTELY NOT. Go home Cafe Provencal, you're drunk! And you're bad at restauranting. read more

I love the prix fixe meal here at dinner! Better yet, on a nice night, sit outside on the patio. For one set price, you can choose 3 courses. You can mix up what you want for the other two courses. It can be salad, appetizer, entree. It can be appetizer, entree, dessert. If there are at least two of you, I'd recommend this: Complimentary bread Two salads (or soup if you prefer) 1 Appetizer 2 Entrees 1 Dessert That's 4 courses (not counting bread) for the price of two prix fixe meals! It works out so well! Then yeah, grab a bottle of wine while you're at it! Cafe Provencal is one of the best restaurants I've been to in a long time. A few years ago, I was lucky enough to travel the Provence area of France for two weeks, and truly miss it. Cafe Provence invokes memories of my travels, as the food is fantastic and is true to the wonderful food I had while in France. My only wish is that they would add 'moules et frites' to the menu. The staff is wonderfully friendly and the surroundings are fine. The food is delicious, and from the smells coming from the other tables, it doesn't matter what you order as it will all be good. We came for lunch to try it out and eat STL' s best french onion soup (read the article in St. Louis magazine) and left with our socks blown off. I mean from the moment we stepped in the door I was in love. Our waiter was Adams......amazing!!!!! (From start to finish) also have to shout out his fellow wait staff because they work together as a well oiled team, assisting each other in every aspect of your dinning experience. The restaurant is charming, nicely decorated with an upscale vibe but with a cozy, casual twist. We ordered a bowl of the onion soup. This was undeniably the best french onion soup I've eaten since Famous stopped serving their soup. This soup had a well balanced broth, was perfectly seasoned, oozing with beautifully cheesy goodness and utterly delicious (Voted #1 in STL magazine). Next was the ceasar salad with homemade croutons, absolutely lovely and we split the croque madam with pommes frites. Our waiter surprised us and had the kitchen divide the meal on separate plates-amaze balls!!! This dish was visually stunning and the sauce was wonderfully rich, the sandwich as a whole was mind blowing. I'm talking, delicate layers, complex favors, gorgeous presentation and generous portions. The pommes frites were seasoned to perfection and ooohhhhh, how I loved dragging them through that sauce. I forgot to mention their house made bread right out of the oven with butter while you're waiting....TASTY. They offer a diverse lunch menu, which I like. The options range from your casual cheeseburger, but their burger is far from your ordinary run off the mill casual to steak and fish entres. My favorite restaurant in Kirkwood! I sometimes swing by just to enjoy a fabulous dinner without the kids and family. I've ordered multiple entrees, sandwiches (lunch), salads, and soup. You can't go wrong with any of them. The food is so good every bite simply melts in your mouth. Treat yourself to their 3 course meal...the chocolate mousse with creme is amazing! (...and I love my mousse!) I've dined and had the same waiter many times. He is very friendly and accommodating yet also lets you eat in peace. The bar tender is also very friendly. The atmosphere is worth the experience of dining out, but we eat out a lot so I've also ordered 'carry out' here more than once even though the food is nicer than a typical carry out restuarant. The bartender has always been happy to serve me a water or drink and fresh bread while I wait for the food order. The bread is served hot and fresh with sea salt on top- yum! You also get bread packed with you order. It's a quaint feeling restuarant with a great wine selection. We found Cafe Provencal (with the help of my handy yelp app) and decided that this would be the place to try. We were greeted at the door and quickly seated. Our waitress immediately came over to take our drink order. I started with some escargot, then a salad and finished with the trout. All three were fantastic. I've been to many fine dining establishments where the chef has offered to make a vegetarian dish, but was not offered that here. Visited for the first time, on a date night out with the hubby and no kids. Perfect! It was a beautiful night and we really wanted to sit outside so we waited at the bar until a table opened. "L'Escargots 7- six naughty little snails swimming naked in a pool of fennel, garlic butter" I love the description. hehe. I have been here a few times but never reviewed it because it was before my Yelp days. :) The food is decent but nothing you will adore and rave about (with the exception of those naughty snails ;) .) The menu is not very big but they try to give a selection worth trying. I love the decor, inside and out. Really nice dining experience in decor and atmosphere alone... GREAT atmosphere! (i.e... Lighting, decor, the people there, the service, volume level, etc..) They have a little patio but this is in a strip mall so keep that in mind. We had good service. The chocolate dessert is wonderful! The main meal was ok. I had the grilled tuna and salad. The Grilled tuna was ok and the salad part was very good. I would just go for the escargot as I love that there! It is worth trying. Short short verision: Drink some wine, eat the Escargot, and get the chocolate pudding like dessert that I don't remember the name of .. sigh.. VERY good though! GREAT atmosphere! Cafe Provencal really hit the mark for me! I went here for lunch with a friend and had an experience that did not disappoint. The atmosphere is very nice and charming with classic decor and table linens. The space is cozy and although it's not a super large space, noise wasn't an issue even with several tables nearby. The menu is small, but there are a variety of choices that will suit most palates. They brought out dinner rolls that had a nice dense consistency and a salty finish that almost gave them a pretzel -like taste. They were very good and you could tell they had been freshly baked. I had the chicken salad croissant which was delicious. The chicken salad was some of best best I've had in St. Louis and the croissant was fresh with a crispy component from having been grilled a bit; a nice touch. It came with the pomme frites (essentially thin-sliced french fries) which were amazing. Super crispy, fresh, and had just the right amount of salt on them. I needed a pick me up and had their coffee which seemed to be a very nice roast and you could tell it had been freshly brewed. Overall an excellent experience that felt a bit like fine dining without the fine dining price tag. I'll definitely be back. read more

First of all, I will add the disclaimer that I was going to dinner with my boyfriend's parents for the first time when we went here so I was not doing my usual fine-tooth-comb of the facilities and services offered.... as I was, well, let's just say more than a little nervous! They had a great selection of red wines, and French reds and Napa reds are pretty much my favorites hands down and they had a lot of good ones. The Bordeaux and their house Cabernet are both delicious. We all got different appetizers so we could try different things. I had never really had French food. It was here that I realized I had never had a properly cooked scallop. I had spent my entire life boycotting scallops because they were gross rubbery balls of wasted calorie intake. Blegh! Who wants to eat something with the texture of an inedible gummy bear!? Not this girl. However, Provencal served us four perfectly cooked scallops in a delicious creamy butter sauce. I dipped my bread in the remaining butter sauce (I know, I know the chef was probably like "For real????! Oh I see my bread alone wasn't good enough for her!") but the truth is the butter sauce was just that delicious and renewed appreciation for properly cooked scallops. I got the roasted red pepper bisque - absolutely delicious - it was on a prixe fixe menu for that night. Amazing. For the main entree I got the steak and frites. The steak was probably the best steak I have ever had... I couldn't finish it all, and it reheated beautiful and it was excellent "brunch" the next day. The dessert, that I can't remember the name of, was also delicious. I told you I was distracted... and a little nervous considering the context of the meal... LOOK! Just eat there, OK? Had the celery root salad this time. It was unique and it is so full of flavor with the mustard, a few extra added greens or something could be added. The trout was the absolute best we've ever had. The mousse is PHENOMINAL. Wish it would have been served in a champagne glass or something more fitting than a coffee cup. The French are all about presentation, and this presentation fell short in a otherwise authentic restaurant. Always enjoy the music played here. I always loved their food. It was as good if not better tonight. Next stop on the girlfriend Kirkwood Romp yesterday. After all our shopping in Kirkwood, we came here for lunch. Sustenance time. #1 got Salade des Betteraves ($8) -- beets, goat cheese, warm bacon, and a fried egg; and Coquilles St. Jacques ($12) -- scallops in cream sauce. #2 got Supreme Sandwich ($8) -- chicken breast with Provencal relish, goat cheese and pommes frites -- a whole lot of pommes frites #3 got Salad Niçoise ($12) -- grilled tuna, greens, hard-boiled egg and vegetables -- potatoes, green beans, cherry tomatoes and other. She subbed salmon for the tuna, and it was a massive piece of salmon. I got Coquilles St. Jacques. Six scallops in the dish. The scallops did not have a good sear. They were just mostly white. I ate two. First one had some grit. Second one had grit in every bite. I could not continue. #1, who also got Coquilles St. Jacques, didn't run into grit until her sixth scallop, and she said it was only one grit. I just asked them to take the dish away, and they didn't ask me to pay for it. Everybody liked their food for the most part. Salad Niçoise was the winner, IMO. I've had this place bookmarked for ages, so was incredibly disappointed. Service was impeccable. Water was refilled readily. read more

For the price, the decent food and mediocre service makes me look elsewhere. The fiance and I were in the mood for a light meal and just wanted to share an appetizer and an entree. The 6 buck splitting fee is something, though not uncommon in other cities, is something that struck me as a surprise for the St. Louis area. I wonder if our light meal affected the service that we got. We sat around with some empty glasses and wondering when the waiter would step out anytime soon. The food was pretty good. In the last several weeks I have had lunch and also Valentines Day dinner at Cafe Provencal. I am so pleased with this place that I am sure to frequent it OFTEN. They are smart not to have too large of a menu so it allows for proper turnover and freshness. It's better to have a smaller menu and nail it, than try to please every kind of palette and fail. They nail it. Bread was excellent, sauces were great, doneness was perfect (sorry culinary technical term). My only, albeit small, complaint is that the Caesar dressing was a little bland. It seemed to be missing the bite and edge of the anchovy. But that is only a minor issue, everything else was spot-on. The wine list was also excellent. It was great to see the different styles, varietals and regions of France represented without the list being too big and unwieldy. Service was also great, the waiter was familiar with the menu (trust me, I don't take that for granted) and was attentive even on a very busy Valentines Day dinner. Keep up the good work! read more

The salad was uninspiring and the lamb was overdone and paired with mashed potatoes that were drowned in a salty gravy that reminded me of my mom's pot roast, not French fare. I had to choke it down. The restaurant was def full and ppl kept coming in and out all night (Saturday), so be sure to have a reservation. We opted to dine on the large "patio" in front of the restaurant - it's a nice space and you aren't crowded by other tables. However, if you're not into live music, opt to sit indoors as the wine bar in the same complex (Branica Wine Bar) plays live music on wkds. Food: 1) Salade César - delicious. I love when restaurants don't drown their ceasar salad in dressing. 2) Soupe a l'oignon gratinée - great onion soup! One of the best we've had in StL. 3) Steak Frites - disappointing. 3 ppl ordered this, and all 3 were overdone. The frites would've been better if they were a little bigger (matchstick-style) - I just felt like eating sticks bc I couldn't taste any potato. 4) Tarte aux pommes - the apple tart was OK. Not anything any of us were raving about. While the service was great and very attentive, I was disappointed when I realized that upon leaving, they did not bring us our "doggie bag" (no steak for the dogs that evening!). At this pt, I'm indecisive if this place warrants another visit, although all the buzz in my ear about how good it is makes me wonder. Cafe Provencal is my go to restaurant when I'm in Kirkwood. The lunch is very reasonable in price and of great quality. I love the croque madame with pomme frites. The pomme frites are cut super thin and are always delightfully crisp. Their patio is perfect for enjoying a bottle of wine and a fantastic lunch in the spring, summer and fall. Dinner here is also generally good. I've only had a few 'ok' experiences. I find the Choucroute Garni's pork chop to be on the tougher side sometimes and the sour kraut to be overly salty. The Coquilles St. Jacques and Pate Maison are always right on. The house made Epi is perfect for dipping in the Coquilles cream sauce. The Soupe a L'oignon gratinee is good but not quite as good as Brasserie by Niche. I generally get the beet salad when it's on the menu and I've never been disappointed. For dinner I tend to stick the Saumon a la Moutard de Pemmerey, Poulet DeBergerac or the Agneau a la Provencal. All dishes tend to be served with a large serving of potatoes both mashed or roasted and roasted vegetables. Desserts here are generally fantastic. Most of them are to rich to be finished alone and need to be shared. The wine list is always great. You can tell that the staff has regular tastings and are very knowledgeable on the pours for the evening. Durring the summer and spring I recommend sitting outside with a bottle of Muscadet. It is a relatively cheap French wine that many americans overlook because it's not a very expensive bottle of wine but it's perfect for a warm/hot day. They seem to always have one or two bottles on the list and it's perfect with fresh seafood like oysters but has the sharp acidity needed to cut though rich and creamy dishes to refresh your palate. The prices are very reasonable for both lunch and dinner. Overall this is a great place for a casual/business lunch and perfect for taking a significant other on a date. read more

Had a very lovely first experience at Cafe Provencal. We had an early dinner (5:30) on a Thursday night, and the place didn't start filling up until we got dessert. The ambience was very cozy and warm, but still chic. Provencal chic, if that's even a thing. We started with the Trio de Provence, which consisted of a very unique eggplant caviar (basically a little eggplant spread... not actually caviar), a salty yet flavorful olive tapenade, a WONDERFUL tomato coulis with capers, and some AWESOME Montrachet cheese. This was all accompanied with bread and crackers. It was a very nice start to our meal! For the main course, my mom had the salmon, which came with a whole-grain mustard sauce. My mom repeatedly described it as "wonderful" (I had a bite and agreed). Both her entree and mine were accompanied by the creamiest mashed potatoes I've ever had (which I count as a good thing!). I had the rack of lamb, which was very tasty. It worked wonderfully with the red wine-black peppercorn reduction that came with it; it was very bold, yet not overpowering. NOTE: If you get the lamb and a glass of wine, make sure the wine you chose is full-bodied enough to hold up to the peppercorn flavor. I had a sip of my mom's pinot noir and could barely taste it. I really enjoyed the lamb, though - it was cooked wonderfully. To finish, we shared the creme brulee. It wasn't the best creme brulee I'd ever had, but it still held its own and was highly enjoyable! A cluster of super-fresh berries sat on top. You have to respect a restaurant that serves July-fresh berries in February. Overall, a very lovely experience at Cafe Provencal. Charming little restaurant with delicious food. I rarely order an appetizer or dessert and almost never order both. However, the nicely priced prix fixe menu at Cafe Provencal inspired me to do both! They're quite flexible with their three course or four course options; if you want to double up on appetizers and forgo the dessert, that's okay! The reverse is okay, too. Six of us dined and seemed to have covered almost everything on the menu. Love, love, loved the pork in Butcher's wife sauce. The Coquilles St. Jacques were good, but verrrry rich. I was only able to tackle one of them, but my friends gladly helped polish off the rest. I had a beet salad that was divine---beautiful presentation and intense beet-y flavor. I'd order it again, for sure. The two soups, onion and tomato, were well-received. My husband wasn't a big fan of his chicken in puff pastry---the chicken was overdone and too dried out in places to eat--and he's the kind of guy that likes his food cooked well. So, that was a little disappointing. Friend really enjoyed his salmon. The service was a little uneven. I have a feeling our food was waiting for us back in the kitchen, since the plates were insanely hot, but the food didn't match that temperature level. We had a difficult time getting second glasses of wine, which was odd. The waiter kind of laughed when I mentioned that my husband didn't really eat half of the chicken because it was tough. That was just weird. And, they ran out of apple tart--a signature French dessert that I was really, really looking forward to. Instead, I chose the chocolate cake which was way, way, way too sweet. It's a very simple menu. However, the food is good. The ambiance is cute and comfortable... It's a great place for an extended lunch hour so you can sit and enjoy the rich food. We had the fries and reuben sandwhich. Yum... worth trying! read more
