I recently visited this Cafe Rio location and unfortunately had a pretty disappointing experience. When we walked in, the first gentleman who greeted us was very nice, attentive, and polite, which we appreciated. However, the rest of the experience went downhill from there. The app didn't let us order so we walked in. It seemed like only one of the workers wanted to be there and help us. The rest seemed like they were ready to go home. They only had one protein option until the guy helping us basically made them grab another, which was the grilled chicken and they didn't have medium sauce which I like. I get wanting to go home but it seems like everything was packed up at 9:30 which is an hour and 30 minutes before closing and the only person who seemed like they wanted to help us was the gentleman who greeted us everyone else treated us like we were an inconvenience for coming in. First time trying this location. Very disappointing. It's dirty, food and trash both behind the counter and in the dining area. Workers seem like they hate it here. One was clearly sick or suffering from allergies and wiped her nose with the back of her hand while helping a customer at the register. Gross!! I stopped by this Cafe Rio on the first night of my stay in Hurricane. They earned my business as they were open on Sunday and open late in the evening. There is construction going on in this area, so it was a little tricky to get to the actual restaurant, but that's not their fault. I ordered the enchilada plate with two chicken enchiladas with tomatillo sauce. For being fairly close to closing time and during (what seemed like) a quiet period of the day, the food was very hot and tasty. When I went to order a drink while paying for my meal, the cashier was kind and informed me that they were out of horchata. Again, for being so late in the day, I found it impressive that horchata was all they were out of. This was a good experience overall! read more

What happened to our beautiful cafe rio? When it opened, the place was clean. They had enough staff and someone would walk around with a tray of sample desserts. We were there this evening and waited 25 minutes to place our order. The food was cold. The chips were, it's soft and luckiest. Every inch of this place was completely filthy. Chairs had old food on them. Tables had so much dust around the base. It was unbelievable. The soda machines were sticky and had fingerprints all over them. And it looked like they hadn't been cleaned in a month. I can't believe the owner doesn't care about what it looks like. You could tell the staff was demoralized and overworked. Such a shame because this used to be such a premier place to go. We will not go back. read more

First time eating here and we both thought it was really good. Service was fast and very friendly and the restaurant was very clean. I ordered the beef barbacoa bowl and hubby got the sweet pork barbacoa burrito. Neither of us could finish our entrees. Very large portions and pricing was very fair. Self-serve drink area was neat, clean and had plenty of drink options including yummy horchata. There were numerous flavored syrups you could add to your fountain drink as well. Walked in -Guy on the grill, girl doing something with dough, another girl refilling salad who told another employee to take their break and another employee by the drive thru -not one acknowledged me standing in line to place my order. After several minutes of being ignored I walked out and turned around and the guy in the drive thru just looked at me. It was around 715pm and several customers in the dining area eating. Not sure what's going on but this type of service is really unacceptable! There was NO one in line but me and not one person could acknowledge or take my order?!?! Wow! I attempted to order a veggie burrito but they were out of fajita veggies. Ok, can I have guac? Associate says that's added at the end so I requested it be put inside my burrito. She says ok and then finds out they're also out of guac. Ok fine. So I order cheese enchiladas. She begins to put rice and beans and has another associate correct her to stop. I don't eat here ever so I don't know any better but whatever. I get to the register to pay and order queso. Nope. Also out of that. I notice all the specialty drinks are out. I mention to the cashier that they seem to be out of everything and he points to a half empty spray bottle on an adjacent counter and says, "that's also all the cleaner we have left". Cool. Almost 29 years ago we used to eat at Care Rio in Ahwatukee, AZ. We were visiting Zion and found this location. I'm not sure why other locations have poor reviews. We were thrilled to see they still have chicken tortilla soup on the menu! As delicious as I remembered. My daughter said it was better than Chipotle in Los Angeles. The prices are fantastic and I forgot they sing little songs when items are ordered like Nacho Man! So fun!!! Great service too! read more

We placed an order at 1:00 PM on Thursday, May 7. The app said it would be ready between 1:10-1:20 PM. We arrived at 1:15 and waited in line. When we finally received our drinks, we were told the restaurant was out of tres leches cake (a $4 item) and were given a $1.99 cookie instead. There was no apology or acknowledgment of the inconvenience. After that, we waited another 30 minutes trying to get the rest of our order while sitting in the car with a 2-year-old and a 5-year-old. At that point, I attempted to cancel the order because of the excessive wait, and a different employee suddenly told me the order was ready. Again, no apology was offered. The issue wasn't just the delay -- it was the complete lack of communication, urgency, or customer service throughout the experience. Honestly I've never been more frustrated at a "fast food" place. I've been waiting in the online order line for over a half an hour. My food was supposed to be ready 40 minutes ago. The girl at the window told me that online orders ARE NOT priority and that she hasn't been able to grab chips for our order and that's why we've had to wait. I watched an entire line that was out the door clear out before we got our food. I also had to watch the employee sip her milk shake next to a bag of food sitting there getting cold. I am not one to post reviews but the poor service received during my last visit can't be ignored. I ordered online for pick up. I arrived at the time my order should have been ready but my order was still 8th on the board. I finally received my order 40 minutes late. It was obvious that there were too few employees working. Only one employee was working to fill the online and drive up orders and he was working at a slow pace. When I finally received my order, there was no apology that it was so late. Cafe Rio fan for 40 years. Started at original place in SLC. Have been to so many of their places I can't remember them all. New to Hurricane Utah and finally open. We stopped in to see what's new. The feel isn't the same right off the starting blocks. Miss the veggies & citrus displays of the old stores. Layout more sterile than older stores. Food same...... just less of it & of course way more pricey. The $1.00 bump to spread sauce and some bits of cheese on top is kind of ridiculous! Place was busy & will stay that way for next few moths until tourist season ends. I did like their wall mural painted in front of the restrooms. I get that it's hard to do the same thing consistently and for decades. But miss the way it was and hate to see the vibe change. It's like they have become more like their competitors ( Costa Vida who ripped off their business model) than what they were when they first started. Food was fresh when warmed up. My first experience at this location was phenomenal, I thought that it was only due to the store being brand new. So I decided to try it again, I took my family and we went there a second time. What I found was that the quality was still as good, the portions, especially the protein, was better than I've ever seen at other locations, and the same staff was still there equaling great leadership. We have been huge fans of Cafe Rio for years and almost every time the food and service is great. We have been to this location 2 times this week and both times they were out of all but one of the meats. The managers here are horrible and when we requested to speak to the manager today she asked her employee " what do they want to speak to me about". We stopped because my wife was hungry, hadn't been in since it opened. I came from SLC and have always affectionately called it Cafe Crappo, after my visit yesterday this restaurant definitely earned the title. We ordered on the app and then proceeded to the Mobile App Drive-Thru lane, once we arrived at the window I was informed that my order wasn't ready. They asked me to drive around one more time as there was a customer behind me. I complied and eventually was given my order. No receipt, no utensils, and the food.....well refer to the aptly given name above. My wife ordered the Taco Tuesday special but it was anything but special. Two tortillas laced with chicken and cilantro...nothing else. She ordered double black beans which she didn't find until she had consumed both tacos as they were tucked under paper holding the tacos. I ordered the 2 enchilada special with pinto beans. First I will describe the enchiladas......upon opening the tin I thought I was looking at 2 cheese rollups from Taco Bell. To my surprise they did contain the barbacoa beef I ordered but upon my first bite I was met with what I can only describe as a mucousy ball of fat. The successive bites had more meat but little flavor. Upon looking at the pictures on the website I was shocked at the dismal reality of what I received. I was so disappointed in the content and flavor I turned my attention to the beans. I have been eating pinto beans for over 30 years since my days in Mexico. The beans were undercooked and cold! They were crunchy and flavorless, I had some pinto beans in Mexico once that included some of the dirt and rocks they were grown in but at least they had some flavor. These were disgusting. I have often been told by my friends and colleagues that Cafe Rio is the most authentic Mexican food they have ever eaten. I believe this is because they see them making their own tortillas as they walk up to order. Even those aren't truly authentic, but I digress. Their advertising also says fresh, however while ordering I have witnessed employees dumping everything into pots to be reheated from plastic bags. I'm sorry but in my opinion this is not fresh. Also in SLC all of the employees in the kitchen were hispanic minus the servers. Here all of the staff seem to be HS age kids who probably haven't prepared anything more complicated than a Hot Pocket. I will not be returning and I will tell everyone I know to stay away from this sorry excuse for a place to eat. read more
