The chocolate torte and the caramel sauce on my sister's dessert make me want to start with desserts first. I wish I would have had some popcorn to dip in that caramel sauce. So damn good. My mom had the Salmon Burger, which she had to bring half home due to the large size. This behemoth was quite a (seafood) catch! Lean, moist and not overseasoned or overcooked. A nice healthy alternative to a beef burger without surrendering too much on flavor. Served with a bed of salad greens for pleasing nutritious meal. Cafe Rustica is a wonderful option for relaxing amid some tasty food, great drinks and some awesome views. I don't remember Cafe Rustica being so lovely... We enjoyed the Today's Special a Petrale Sole served with Mashed Potatoes (Au Gratin were sold out) and a sautee of Spinach and Asparagus, a delicious nice sized pizza called The Dynamite which had Black Forest Ham, Pepperoni and Italian Sausage. The Cattleman's Rib Eye Steak came with sauteed green beans, a peppercorn sauce poured right over the steak and mashed potatoes (out of Au Gratin, my favorite!). The butter lettuce salad was nice and refreshing and helped balance out our meal but our highlight was the Butterscotch Pudding!!! Killer. All of this went down smoothly alongside our bottle of Whispering Angel. Thank you Mary Ann for the best birthday gift ever, both tasty and memorable. Just wish you were there too! read more

I do not understand why people think this place is expensive or having slow services. This is such a European restaurant with not pushy services for you to enjoy your food, and time altogether. Same as in anywhere in Europe - the meal is meant to be enjoyed over time. So please do not expect super fast services. Its always fascinating to re-read your old reviews and realize how much time has gone by. I was glad to see that the ambiance was just as pleasant as I last recalled but was sad to find that the food lacked the same joy. In a nutshell, I ordered the pizza again only to find that it was nothing like what I had in 2010. The crust was floppy, the filling wouldn't adhere to the pizza and the quality felt underwhelming. I took my girlfriend here yesterday after having really good experiences here in the past. We arrived around 12:30 for lunch and it was a beautiful day so we wanted to eat outdoors. Unfortunately I didn't make a reservation as I never had to in the past, but this prevented us from enjoy their outdoor patio. That was not a problem, inside of their restaurant is lovely and charming as well with their beautiful stone walls. We sat at a tall table that was placed right next to a window which offered a nice view of their garden.Our server was really nice and knowledgeable when describing the daily specials. We ended up ordering off the menu and got the Grilled Eggplant Napoleon on a toasted brioche with fresh mozzarella, roasted red peppers,basil, pine nuts and kalamata olives for 9.75 as our appetizer. This was one of the best appetizer I have ever had being full of flavor and having magnificent texture! For our entrees we both ordered their gourmet pizzas. I got the Flammekueche. The pizza consists of diced prosciutto, onions, fresh thyme and creme fraiche. My girlfriend ordered The Dynamite - Italian fennel sausage, Black Forest ham and pepperoni, pizza sauce and mozzarella. When the pizzas arrived, he let my girlfriend pick which one she wanted making her feel special and me happy. Of course she had to pick the pizza I ordered! But we shared so it didn't really matter. The pizzas are thin crust and the bread itself is flavorful. We both agreed that the Flammekueche pizza was the best one, but both are absolutely divine. We didn't order dessert as the meal was filling, we even got a box to go! One negative was how long it took for us to get our check. It wouldn't have been as bad if we didn't have be at Chateau Julien for our tour of their winery. However, when I asked for the check, the server saved himself by saying, "sorry, I assume everyone never wants to leave this beautiful place." And I wouldn't if I didn't have to be somewhere. This place is really good. I left a vmail message the day before for a Thursday dinner reservation and due to the crappy Verizon service at my apartment, no one could understand what I was asking for at the restaurant and they called me back. So big ups for the service. We arrived at the appointed time (5:30) an had to wait in a little line to get our seating. Many locals picking up dinner which is a good sign. There are several tables in the front, and a few along the side of the building. We were sat on the side of the building by the door so I could here the kitchen which is always fun. Everyone was wearing a mask. Almost everyone, the person who took our order (owner? manager? he knew everyone) put one on after a bit but only after some friendly chiding from a regular. I had the special -- scallops in a saffron sauce (mashed potatoes and several veg) with tuscan bean soup. My husband had lamb with scallops potatoes and spinach. The soup was great and made me think about soup season which is happening very soon. Not too many beans, nice greens in the soups; well balanced. Lovely. I could have eaten that all night. Entrees arrived pretty quickly. The kitchen mentioned that they were selling the scallops really well. I had four scallops, nicely browned, a nice pile of mashed potatoes, with green beans, small carrots, and maybe one or two trees of broccoli. So everything on that plate was a favorite of mine. I would have liked the veg to be a little more crisp; they were slightly overcooked to my taste. The scallops were nicely cooked but the sear was coming off so I'm thinking they were rolled in something and then seared? It was weird. How does a sear come off? and it wasn't one scallop. This occurred on three of four. But they were delicious so I don't care. Potatoes? Yum. The husband's lambie was apparently very good because he cleaned his plate, even the spinach. The dessert menu was extensive - gelato of the day, a creme brulee, a bread pudding. I had a lemon pudding thing with fresh strawberries, and the husband cannot resist creme brulee. Brulee looked fine, standard stuff. It cracked well with a spoon. The strawberries in my dessert did not have any flavor which is not good especially at the end of strawberry season in a location that is very close to where the berries are grown and picked. The dessert itself had a little pudding on the inside, but mostly was lemon bread. I'm not disappointed. I ate the whole thing. I expected more. The husband and I don't drink alcohol which means that sometimes we get an eye roll from wait staff like we're being cheapskates or something. We were not provided any non-alcoholic alternatives other than the usual iced-tea and soda. Dinner for two without alcohol was $112. I would go again, and ask not to sit by the kitchen as we really got the short straw on that. I'd like to try their lunch. One aside - the wait person seemed tired, without enthusiasm. We had lunch here based on the yelp reviews and it didn't disappoint. One thing you notice when you arrive is the amount of people 'taking to go'. Portion sizes are large so don't let your eyes run away with your belly. We split a beet salad and a traditional Alsatian pizza and they were totally top shelf. A must try!!! The Dynamite Pizza-Traditional and satisfying! I'm alittle irritated due to the wait. I think they were overwhelmed with the amount of customers on a Tuesday @1345 hrs! My boyfriend and I are huge fans of both the Lorraine Pizza and the Warm Beet Salad. Aside from the amicable service and charming ambiance, the food is sensational and as fresh as can be. They cook their pizzas in their authentic stove oven and their vegetables seem as though they were freshly harvested from a private garden. We trust our servers' opinions on specials and wine-pairing recommendations- they never disappoint! The only thing is, we find ourselves dragging our feet to make the drive all the way out to Carmel Valley. The service was fine, But the salad was overdressed soggy, and limp. The pizza was not even close to a wood-fired pizza. This was my first time at this restaurant and it was a bit crowded and there's only one men's and women's bathroom. It was really dim but it was very nice and very friendly environment. You cannot describe this restaurant with fancy, flowery, trendy food language. It is very simply a place where you can find delicious food. If you are looking for trend, ambience, chic lighting, look elsewhere. If you are looking for authentic continental dishes, many of which are considered passé, look no farther. The duck dish (I uploaded a picture), was simply the best duck I have ever had, having had the fortune of company paid meals in over 20 Michelin 2 and 3 star restaurants. It is slow-cooked and finished in the wood burning oven to give it a crisp skin. It has also been meticulously deboned, leaving just a leg bone for you to maneuver around with your fork and knife. The portion is perfect for two wanting to share, provided they have a couple of appetizer. If you like "lazy" mashed potatoes -where they serve it with lump and with skin pieces in there- which is a shear sign of laziness to me, this is not your place. The mashed potatoes are creamy. There are no lumps. They are velvety, tasteful and golden in color. They have a homemade red cabbage sauerkraut served along a few dishes that is phenomenal. Escargot is done in the classic manner, with basil, butter, garlic sauce that will have you run your bread over the plate to gather up all the flavor. Clams were done to perfection, with a flavorful broth that was no salty. Salads were fresh, and the dressing light allowing the flavor of the fresh leafy veggies to come through. Wines by the glass are served in generous portions in small carafes. Everyone who works there knew the food, could explain it, and was very professional if not a bit stiff and cold in attitude, as you would expect from a classic continental restaurant (which are nearly impossible to find these days anyway). My only regret was eating the bread, which took room that should have gone to the duck. Desert somehow managed to find space. The overall design of the restaurant is beautiful. On a beautiful day, the outside seating is fantastic in the great carmel valley. Inside, the interior is greatly designed. The food menu primarily consist (when I was there on lunch) of: pizza, sandwiches, and other italian plates. I had the rigatoni, which was, in my opinion, has nothing that distinguishes itself from any other pasta dish. I didn't have a chance to partake in the actual pizza's but judging on other people foods the pizza looked fantastic. The pizza that the menu describes seems delicious. My Mom who was with me had a albacore sandwich which used a croissant, and it tasted fantastic. So, overall, the place is a great place to have lunch, brunch, or dinner. Great locale. The food, in my opinion, is very vast and offers a great selection of Italian foods to indulge yourself in. I had a caramel desert which WAS AMAZING. The desert was very nicely decorated and tasted amazing. The waitress was great. Very professional, polite, and knowledgeable of the food she served. Cafe Rustica has been a favorite of ours for years. We stopped by for lunch and was seated immediately. Hostess is very friendly and nice. Our server came by he was an older gentleman with gray hair and an accent. I couldn't understand him and asked him nicely to repeat what he just said. Then he got an attitude from there on out. He took our orders and when I ordered a glass of Chardonnay he mumbled " the Pinot noir" under his breath left before I could correct him. I figured I would just drink the Pinot and relax. Well the Pinot was not good. I flagged him down because he wouldn't even look our way. When I asked for a different wine he said "there are only two, I'll bring the menu and you can pick something else" After several minutes he dropped off the menu but never came back. Our salads which were very good were delivered promptly by another staff member. We finished our salads and sat for another 10 minutes before our pizzas were put on the counter to be delivered. We watched him go up to them then turn and start chatting with another server, then pick another table's appetizer that was put up on the counter after our pizzas. Then finally after the pizzas were cold he brought them over. No offer for grated cheese, he did bring a bottle of red pepper flakes. My dynamite pizza was supposed to have pepperoni, Italian sausage and Black Forest ham. It had one pepperoni slice on each slice , a couple of random crumbs of sausage and literally one 1/4 inch tidbit of ham, buried under a mountain of fresh basil. I always ordered this and love it and this was not it. Our waiter never asked how everything was. I don't like to be that customer that send the food back so I just ate it. When we asked for a box for the leftovers he grabbed our pizzas and plunked them down on a counter in the hallway outside the bathroom. I only know this because I got up to use the restroom and saw them sitting there and looked over at out waiter who was up at the kitchen chatting with another waiter. I told him I would box them up myself to which he replied "no I'll do it" and walked away without doing it. Probably wouldn't have bothered to write this review if it was just the wrong wine or the half made cold pizza but this waiter needs to be called out for his rude and incompetent service. I was just notified 3 hours before our reservation (the day before Easter) that our reservation has been cancelled due to the possibility of rain as we had requested to sit outside. Are you kidding me? I made this reservation over 2 weeks ago & it was for our Easter celebration. Completely outrageous that our reservation was not honored with a table inside. They said it was our fault for requesting outside, though never let us know when we booked that our reservation would be based on the weather. Be aware that you do do not have a confirmed reservation with this reservation if you choose to sit outside, they will cancel your reservation last minute if the weather is inclement. Most restaurants prepare ahead of time for situations this, this restaurant does not. They over booked & now have lost a very long term regular/local customer. I definitely will not be patronizing an establishment that is so incredibly unprofessional & could care less about their customers. DO NOT RECOMMEND!!! read more

Fantastic lunch at this nice Carmel Valley restaurant. Great outdoor patio. When we arrived on a busy Sunday it was reservations only outside but they had tables inside for us late comers. Once our eyes adjusted to the dark interior could see a full menu with lots of salads, sandwiches, pizza and other starters. Had a grilled artichoke which was served with pickled peppers and mayo for dipping. Really good. Opted for a smoked salmon pizza. It was thin crust with creme fraiche, topped with smoked salmon, capers and some red onion. It was awesome! Never had it before but will try to make it at home now. read more

We stayed in Carmel Valley for a wedding and went to Cafe Rustico the evening before. They have a large patio, but it was full and we didn't have a reservation so were seated inside. The menu is large and everything sounded so good so we struggled with what to order. We ended up getting the calamari to start, and then seafood pasta and halibut special. Everything was fresh and delicious. Service was very friendly and helpful with our indecisiveness. The portions are large and they do also give you bread to start with, so you won't leave hungry! Prices seemed very reasonable for the area. We would love to go back if ever in the area again! read more

I might have given this beautiful quaint café 4.5 or more stars and a much bigger tip today, if the waitress did not forget to bring our calamari appetizer before our main dishes. She asked if we still wanted to get it, AFTER she brought our steak and pizza. It was just a bit too late for that. We are generous with our tip as long as the service is phenomenal. We were also not offered bread. We asked her about it since we saw them on other people's table! The waitress insisted, we didn't ask for any. Wow! We've never had to ask for bread before in any restaurants. Usually, we are offered some while waiting for our main dishes. Anyway, the ribeye steak was cooked exactly how my husband likes it--juicy and tasty without it being too salty. The dynamite pizza with my added mushrooms & spinach was pretty good. I would have loved to top it with arugula but she said they don't keep any in stock. I'm still searching for that perfect wood fired pizza, like the ones we've enjoyed in Italy for 3.5 years! La Baraonda in Atlanta is still the closest to authentic Italian pizza thus far, and we have tried some in different states! I guess we'll have to try some in NYC! Once again, they hit it out of the park. We had brunch on a Sunday. Sitting outside, we enjoyed the Grilled Marinated Shrimp Skewer on Tuscany white bean salad, roasted red peppers and cilantro. Marinated grilled Pork Loin, with sage aïoli, lettuce and roma tomatoes on ciabatta. It was wonderful. You must try the wood fired pizzas. We shared their pizza margherita which was delightful. This is one of those amazing hidden gems that only a few would know about. Thanks to Yelp, my brother found this place and so we decided to give it a try. Located in a quiet little neighborhood of Carmel Valley, Cafe Rustica...and aptly named....is a charming little rustic European country style house turned into an European cafe....and is set on a little street of other quaint little country shops, nurseries, wine tasting establishments, etc. We came here for a Sunday lunch without a reservation, but thank goodness there were still tables available in a semi covered heated outdoor patio as the inside was completely full. We were shown to our table by a very nice and friendly gentleman whom we later learned was actually the owner. The other reason we were seated on the patio was because the tables inside tended to be for smaller groups, and their were six of us. Our server soon came over to hand us the menus and to take our drink orders. Wow....the menu items all looked so good! We had a difficult time choosing what to order as we all wanted to try as many items as possible. As for me, I really wanted to try the thin crusted wood fired gourmet mushroom pizza, but also had a craving for the Farm Fresh Egg Salad sandwich on a toasted French baguette....which came with a side of what seemed like saucy version of sautéed potatoes with onions. ....not sure what to call it, but it was yummy. Anyway, since I'm on vacation I went ahead and ordered both the sandwich and pizza....to share. My father and brother wanted to try other pizzas too, so in addition we ordered the Napolitano and Vegetarian pizzas. Excellent thin crust pizzas! ....very rustic style with the freshest ingredients that you can actually see and taste....served hot and fresh out of the oven...... delicious! Oh, I thought the olives on the Napolitano was perhaps a bit strong in taste and so this pizza wasn't my favorite. Other items we ordered were the Fire Roasted Artichoke, Fresh Steamed Clams, the Hungarian Paprika Beef Goulash, the Wood Oven Baked Rigatoni, and the Butternut Squash Raviolis. I only got to taste the clams and artichoke....the steamed clam's broth had a strong tomato acid taste to it, and although it was good and everyone enjoyed dipping bread in it, I felt it was too acidic for my liking. The artichoke was good....I especially liked the sliced red and yellow roasted bellpeppers and olive garnish on top....yum. Needless to say we were really stuffed by the end of all this food, but an excellent meal wouldn't be complete without at least sampling some of their dessert offerings. Plus, they had my favorite bread pudding (absolutely can't pass on) either with chocolate sauce as an off menu special or the regular bread pudding with raspberry and apricot sauce. We ordered the regular. My father loves Creme Brulee so we ordered one of those too. They both tasted really good. ..not too sweet. However, the bread pudding was different from what I'm used to.....less bread and more like custard pudding.....not too bad. This is a cool spot if you live in Carmel Valley or just visiting. We sat outside which felt amazing since the weather was about 80° that day so it was the perfect weather ( they have heaters outside as well which they turned on when the sun went down and they were very warm so even if it's freezing outside you could totally sit near one of the heaters and be fine). They only serve beer and wine which I was bummed about because I'm a vodka kind of gal but oh well. I ordered a salad and split a vegetarian pizza with someone at the table. The salad was very light and fresh and the pizza was really good. Everything was reasonably priced as well which was a nice surprise since everything in Carmel is extremely overpriced. After chugging, err, I mean tasting wine at Talbott and Boekenoogen, we were in need of adding some food in our stomachs before passing out. On some recommendations from people in our party, we headed here and got a table outside. It was a beautiful day so we were more than happy to sit outside. For cold days, they have heaters outside. They had many specials that day that sounded delicious, but I opted for the thin crust wood fired pizza. I got the Dynamite pizza with sausage, basil, pepperoni, and tomato sauce. Delicious! The crust was thin and crisps and the basil added a freshness that was perfect. Our server was friendly and the staff kept refilling our glasses with water without being asked. Everyone was nice and attentive. I'm curious to try other items on the menu so I'll be back to see what else they have to offer. read more
