The atmosphere here is really cute and very lively. The food however was not good. We did the fondue, which wasn't heated properly and turned hard very quickly. We asked the waiter to get us a new fondue heating tray thing but by the time he did, it was already hard and wasn't good to eat. It was very expensive for fondue too - 30 per person. I'm a bit surprised by all of the negative reviws here. A few co-workers and I stopped in for lunch on a whim. They serve breakfast and lunch until 5 which is a fun surprise. Our party of three ordered from the lunch and breakfast menu. Everyone was pleasantly satisfied. I might've liked it even more than a similar dish at ABC kitchen only because the rosti was bomb. The lemon french toast lacked any hint of lemon but was pretty good with the caramelized fruit. I wasn't disappointed though I was really hankering for the french toast at Jane's (and nothing beats the french toast at ABC kitchen). Overall, great meal and great service. Walked past this lovely place with a friend late on a Saturday. Since the weather was nice and we had nothing better to do we decided to share a bottle of wine. Wine is wine, and is always great, so cannot really complain about that. The staff was friendly, and the over all night turned out lovely. Never have I felt so compelled to write a bad review until my unfortunate experience at Cafe Select. My friend and I found this cute cozy cafe on this very app, looked over some reviews and decided to give it a try. Seeing as we were catching up and waiting for someone else we chose to get two glasses of wine. We were in the middle of the restaurant about 10 feet from the bar. Our server took our order and proceeded to ignore us for an hour. Well into waiting we noticed the entire staff was trained to look anywhere other than our table. Mind you, we weren't hard to miss and there were only four other tables that were occupied- two of which had arrived after us and left before we were even served. At this point our third guest arrived and absolutely no one noticed, or even bothered to bring her a menu (we had notified our server that she was arriving after us). When she finally decided to check up on us after a busy hour of refilling bottles of water, walking around looking for small tasks and chatting with the other staff she apologized and said "well you didn't say anything either". Considering their suggested gratuity is 20% I can't be blamed for expecting better service. I'm not one to make situations such as these about race. I always try to give the benefit of the doubt. But I couldn't help noticing that everyone who received exceptional service, were all white / European. My friends and I are not. If you're looking for a great place to eat and drink, do not go into Cafe Select where their service is quite selective. Save them from another embarrassing review and save your money for a place worth spending it on. read more

Great place for a casual date or catching up for a drink with a buddy. Hang out at the bar or sit at one of the tables by the window so u can you enjoy watching people stroll by on a lazy late afternoon...when everywhere is quiet and unrushed. Cocktail is a hit or miss. Make friends with the bartender and he'll prob experiment with some of his concoctions on you. The day will def be more interesting that way. Do try the Elderflower Spritzer; very refreshing and perfect for the now reported HOTTEST Summer of NYC history. Food was surprisingly good for a random cafe next to the infamous La Esquina Corner Deli. Underdog? Maybe. Enjoyable? Yes. Had the Leek salad, Hanger Steak, and the Roasted Bone Marrow. Maybe I got lucky, but I was surprised to find that a pungent veggie like leeks can be caramelized n tasty, a cafe-style hanger steak to be pretty decent in quality, and for the bone marrow to be so toasty and flavorful...hits the heart (and arteries, i'm sure) when spread over thinly sliced and very buttery baguettes (just as good as Minetta Tavern's)... Cafe Select is a cute lunch place in the Soho Nolita area. It's a good place to go when you are in a rush and don't have time to wait around for a table. I like their salads and sandwiches. Cute! It's very tight and therefore gets crowded really quickly. I highly recommend a reservation. The food is excellent and the crowd is mostly European... Both the hostess and the waitress were really nice too. I had the linguine with clams which was great, the clams were very fresh! I am giving it 4 stars because I expected more from the wine list, it was very limited and the cab sauv. that I ordered was not great. Otherwise everything else was good! Warning: the select truffle burger comes in ONLY rare or medium rare. Something about how the oil in the truffle burger can ONLY be cooked at a certain max temperature, so if you're going to order anything more cooked than a medium rare, I suggest ordering just the select burger. It's the FIRST RARE burger I've ever had, and boy it was YUMMAY! I tried it with the Gruyer cheese, which I don't recommend. Gruyer cheese is a rich and slightly tangy cheese that's great on its own, but when it's melted over beef, I would suggest getting the regular American cheese. Overall, it's a pretty good burger. The juices were dripping onto my bun that by the end of it, it got a bit soggy. Perhaps they should toast their bottom buns a little more. The burgers come with either salad or chips. I recommend getting the salad. DON'T GET THE CHIPS! It's so bland and over-burned that it's not even worth the guilt you're gonna feel for being unhealthy. read more

A cute spot on Lafayette for that un-planned cozy & lazy brunch. Swiss inspired, the Rosti (that pretty much comes with everything!) is amazing and a must try. Since I am not a fan of eggs, I looked through the menu and reluctantly went for the quinoa salad (for want of a healthier option than pancakes!). Cooked al dente, with a herb lemon dressing and resting on a bed of buttery roasted tomatoes, it was in every sense of the word - Delicious! I can almost taste it again.... Oh, and I messed up dates for my Opentable reservation and landed up the next day instead! Score! no wait :) The restaurant itself is pretty small so make reservations if you plan to come around noon because by the time we were finished with our meal, the restaurant was packed. If you love hash brown you must get the roesti norwegian ($14). What you will get is a HUGE hash brown with generous amounts of smoked topped with fresh herb sour cream sauce. It was so good i had to finish the entire thing even though i wasn't really hungry! My friend enjoyed the blueberry pancakes, maybe ill give this a try next time....that is if i can resist from ordering the roesti again! read more

Enjoyed this place for lunch with a friend. It would be a huge stretch to say that they specialize in or offer a great variety of vegetarian food, but it is Swiss after all. I was very happy with my caprese baguette. The space is not huge, so if you're bothered by crowded quarters, try to come off-hour. I've read some reviews claiming that the staff are rude, but that was not at all my experience. They were quite nice, and they even moved us to a table in some kind of secluded alcove at the back when we asked for something quieter. (The person seated right next to us was jabbering about something in a piercing tone and seemed to be completely unaware that everyone could hear.) All in all I liked Cafe Select. It would be cool to see some kind of vegetarian take on a classic Swiss dish, if such a thing is even possible. But really it's not fair to expect a wide vegetarian selection because that's just not the nature of the cuisine. If that's going to make you climb up on your high horse, go elsewhere. If you can roll with it, you'll have a nice time. And some Swiss beer. read more

Meant to try this place out since they opened and finally made it there last night. Seems I haven't missed much. The place itself is cute enough and the waitstaff was nice. The host seemed more harried than he should be. We sat in "the cave" - the little area carved out of the wall. It's just big enough for 2 tables of 2 (even though they had 6 seats in there) so mighty cozy but was nice and meant I could talk to my dinner companion without yelling. The red wine was only OK (I got a cab). My spinach/goat cheese/roasted yellow beet salad was delicious, as was the side of roasted brussel sprouts (I happen to love those little things). My papardelle with butternut squash was too sweet - I was not a fan. M got the iceberg wedge salad (it's more like almost a whole head of lettuce) which he liked and the roast chicken was not bad. All in all I was expecting a little more since it's the same owners as La Esquina. Did I hate it? No. Would I go back? Not likely. There's just so many more other places to try out. read more

Great casual brunch in the city. It wasn't too crowded on the rainy Sunday morning I ventured in with a friend. We were seated right away, and I loved the vibe of this place... it has a sort of European feel, but doesn't come off as trying too hard to be trendy and cool like so many places do. I had the poached eggs and polenta, and the portions were smallish, but the food was delicious. Even better were the cocktails. Try the Elderflower spritzer, such a nice alternative to the usual boring mimosa. And the location is perfect for shopping and wandering around Soho after brunch. As a big fan of the weekend Brunch, my one complaint is that all my favorite spots have resorted to waiting times comparable to what you'd find on a Saturday night. It's brunch... you haven't eaten, it's in the middle of the day, most of the time you're recovering from a slight hangover and moderate rest (at best). You want good food and you want it when you arrive, not an hour later. It could have been our lucky day, but this was one of those, hit the spot type experiences as far as the food. This was just random pick last Sunday. We walked past and saw the windows opened up to the sidewalk and as it was nice out, we doubled back to check the menu. We walked in around 1pm and were seated immediately. The place was full, but it was not overly crowded. Nice menu with the standard brunch items and some non-traditional Austrian/German/Swiss items as well. Food is simple and delicious. The croque-monsieur was really delightful and the potato rosti was enormous with a nice all around crisp to the shell (very much like a hash brown, but much thicker). The eggs were cooked perfectly and although eggs shouldn't be difficult, my experience is that they tend to either be over or under cooked when a restaurant is experiencing a rush (we had both the poached and fried). As far as the food, I would have given it 4 stars. Could have used a little improvement from the service aspect although, I'd agree with a previous reviewer in that I don't need my server on top of me every other bit. Minor incident, but the salt shaker was filled with sugar. Being famished, I didn't notice immediately, but was wondering why my potatoes were not salty after a few extra shakes. That was a little odd. Also, when the couple next to us were seated, they asked one of the staff what the table next to them had ordered and the staff had no idea and interupted the other couple to ask them. Again, minor, but awkward... maybe she was new, but you would think that learning the menu is a reasonable expectation. Otherwise, we had a good experience and will likely return. read more

This place used to be a bit better. Service is lagging, and food is lagging as well. We were told that the wait would be a few minutes. We waited, and told the host that we'd be outside. 15 minutes later I asked how long the wait was and we were seated immediately to a completely empty section with a bunch of open tables... We ordered the lobster blt, pancakes, tropical bowl, and the polenta and egg bowl. The BLT was alright, nothing mind blowing. I've had it before, and it usually wasn't as mayo-heavy. The pancakes were amazing, smelled amazing, tasted amazing, and were by far the best thing on the table. The tropical quinoa bowl was whatever. It was fruit, something syrupy, and some plain quinoa. The polenta and egg bowl was nothing different than the frozen polenta at Trader Joe's, topped with cheese and an egg. The service was friendly but we were charged for drinks that never came, and didn't realize that we were even being charged for refills because 99.5% of places in the US will not charge for a refill. This place does. So when you casually ask me if I'd like a refill on a 3 dollar iced tea, before my drink is even done, you shouldn't assume that I know that you charge for refills. It's the polite and right thing to inform your diners that they will be charged. It's not the $3 that threw me off, it's that it was a hot day, the cups were small and filled with ice, so I had racked up 1.5x my entree with iced tea because I was chugging them down. Overall this place used to be cool for brunch, and the food was a bit more inspired and German/European. It's slowly turning into an uninspired cliche brunch spot with nothing crave-able. read more

I went there for an early lunch with friends on a weekday, and we had the whole place to ourselves. Our waitress was a little abrupt and seemed to be in a hurry for us to order. One of my friends had a question about what an ingredient in an entree was, and the waitress just shrugged and said that she had no idea. When pressed, she offered an explanation - she's new, so she didn't know. After a little awkward silence, she left to ask another waitress, who then directed her to the kitchen. She came back and provided an explanation. The food was good but not amazing. The waitress was probably nervous and a little inexperienced, but pleasant enough. They do let you linger after your meal, which is nice. All in all, I'm meh about it. I wouldn't object to going back, but wouldn't suggest going there as a first option either. read more

I've been twice, both times with opentable reservations for 5-6 people that I was able to secure day-of. The first time was for drinks on a Saturday night- we were sat in a cute booth towards the back and enjoyed it. They were not super attentive as far as service goes, but the atmosphere is very cute and laid back. A young, hipster-ish crowd. The second time was for dinner on a Friday. Everyone agreed that the restaurant was cute and we liked the vibe and crowd. We were sat in a table by the door, which was cold, and on top of that we had the bar crowd hovering over us. Although not ideal, everyone really enjoyed their cocktails and their food. It was definitely a hit and will be back. I recommend if you're looking for a dinner / drinks spot with a small group of friends, its a cool enough vibe without being stuffy, at a good price point and conveniently on opentable. I've been here a few times since I live not too far from here. I like the environment since it seems to be in the middle of the mountains in Switzerland. It feels like being in Europe every time I have breakfast or lunch here. I usually get the Schnietzel with roasted potatoes. It is delicious and they don't make it too 'oily' as they usually do in other restaurants. However, I have to give 3 stars to this place since it is always packed and the servers are too busy every time. It always takes me more than 45 minutes to get my food; so, if you are hungry you should probably go somewhere else in the area. read more
