Returned to try their Pho and Bun Bo Hue. Came early. Around 7:50-8 AM on a Thursday morning. There were a lot of individuals of the Asian community there. Mostly elderly gentleman. Outside and conversing inside as well. Not sure if all of them were there for Cafe Thao Mi as there are other Asian businesses and grocers in this strip mall. I ordered the Bun Bo Hue. It had a lot more meat variety and tendon than my better half's Beef Pho dish. Which I hadn't noticed until he pointed it out to me. I think he was jealous lol! The Bun Bo Hue broth had a fairly strong pork base flavor in my opinion. I don't know if that's traditional. I only mention it for those who may not enjoy pork as much. It contained ample amounts of noodle and protein. My only complaint was that it was not as piping hot as the Beef Pho was. The Beef Pho had a very flavorful base. I only sampled a soup spoonful, but I was impressed and believe it can stand up to any of my favorite Pho spots in the valley. I will definitely get it on my next visit. I can see myself coming here often as it is quite close to my area and it gives me old school vibes of community, food, and family. Awesome local spot. Edit: I also ordered a Banh Mi on this visit. Nice Viet spot in Taylorsville! It's' located in an area where there are multiple Viet spots, restaurants and stores. I'm happy this place serves many traditional Viet dishes from full blown entrees to snacking food/appetizers. The owner, Thao, is super kind too! She was happy to see how happy I was to see all these Viet dishes I grew up with. I enjoyed the banh bot loc with nuoc mam (fish sauce). Very hard to find in Utah! Though I prefer the ones that are wrapped in banana leaves, these ones were fantastic! The nuoc mam was made well. The avocado smoothie had a nice subtle sweetness to it. I've come here since I was younger with my dad to get his Vietnamese coffee. Theirs is my favorite and I haven't had any others in Utah I would say that are better. This is a great spot to grab a quick inexpensive lunch. They have an assortment of smaller rice platters, Asian desserts and pastries. They also have pho. The couple times I got it, it was good. Their biggest thing is their Banh Mi which is delicious. I got the house one and the bbq pork. Inside is spacious, they've recently renovated it. Service is always good and fast. read more

I really like this place! The decor reminds me of a restaurant I'd find in Saigon. It's not quite on point with the banh mi from Saigon or even SoCal, but it's pretty good! Service has been good for me with workers who speak both Vietnamese and English. Tables are typically pretty clean and they have wi-fi! I do wish that their hours were a little later though, so I could really study here. Half the restaurant looks like they are still remodeling and the other other half is pretty spaced out. The banh mi ($3.50) sandwiches are pretty basic but made to order! There's a good variety of options to choose from. They charge extra for pate (unless it's already part of the sandwich, i.e. combination/dac biet). I've tried the egg banh mi with pate and the combination banh mi--of the two, Jenney and I both preferred the combination by a long shot. The Vietnamese coffee (small, $2.80) here is STRONG! It's sweet yet bitter and has a roasted nutty taste. It's good but probably out of my caffeine level and believe me, I can usually handle a LOT of caffeine. After a group meeting, I had the choice to go to my internship early and be miserable or go eat breakfast alone. The decision was a pretty tough one. Yeah no not really. If there is one lesson from reading my post today is that food always wins. Thao Mi was here before the banh mi scene took Utah over by storm. Before you walk in you will see Vietnamese people smoking outside, when you plug your nose and walk through the doors, you will hear vietnamese music playing, vietnamese people chatting away, and vietnamese people drinking their vietnamese coffee, which by the way is made the right way (more bitter than sweet). This scene is one that resembles the culture that you will find if you were in The country of Vietnam yourself at a cafe. No one is in a rush, it's about doing everything when you are doing nothing. Now onto the food, the owner started making her own housemade baguettes a month ago. The baguettes were store bought before and wasn't too bad but the quality of the bread now, bumps this banh mi shop to a class of it own. If you are a CARB LOVER come here for the bread. Today I had a deconstructed banh mi trung op la (sunnyside eggs with liver pate). Seriously the lightest, flakiest, most remarkable carb ever with the combination of silky egg yolk on top of the fattiness and rich pate. Place was really packed for breakfast, it is too bad the Pho tasted so greasy and was flavorless as I was really craving it and Pho Hoa wasn't open that early. Their Banh Mi was decent, had a lot of bread and very little meat. I love Oh Mai's sandwiches the best as they gut the bread and remove the excess so they can stack more meat and veggies in it. The latest stop in my quest for a local bánh mì to rival the $8 ones I had in San Francisco took me back over to the west side to Carriage Square. There are a few areas in Utah that fascinate me, as they were clearly created by the same developer with some sort of chain in mind. I grew up in Sandy and there is a nearly identical shopping area called Union Square. Same layout, with a long L-shaped row of buildings tracing one boundary of the property, a block of buildings facing it from the opposite corner bordering 4100 S and Redwood Road, and parking between them. There was more than one business I frequented in Union Square - Winchell's Donuts chief among them - so as I drive into Carriage Square, it always feels somewhat familiar. Cafe Thao Mi is on the south side of the square. My wife and daughter hung out in the car while I ran in. I realized on the way in that I didn't check to make sure they do orders to go. I needn't have worried, as their menu is a big, deli-style board on the wall. There was a group before me waiting, so I took a look around the menu. It is huge. Although I didn't get through the entire thing before it came time to order, there were definitely some tantalizing dishes on it that merit further investigation. The section that I was interested in is on the top left. There are at least half a dozen bánh mì variations available, all differing in the protein on the sandwich. Since my wife and I were sharing, I chose the special combination with pork roll, pate, jamon, and grilled pork and one with just pork roll. My wife and I had just been talking about how much we miss the green papaya salad and spring rolls from Out the Door, and I notice several kinds of spring rolls on the menu, but opt for just the sandwiches since we're heading to a birthday party where there will be food. As has been the trend thus far in Salt Lake, the sandwiches are a bargain. They are on the menu for $2.80 each, so for $6 even I'm out the door with two of them. The bread used to make these sandwiches were smaller than those at either Hong Phat or Tay Do. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, though, as it means a better filling-to-bread ratio. As with both of the other sandwiches, I could have used a bit more of the pickled vegetation on mine. The meats were delicious, but I strongly preferred the complexity of the combination over the pork roll. I also really liked the pate on the sandwiches we had. It had a much bolder flavor than those at the other two bánh mì stores. After the sandwiches were gone, I really regretted not grabbing some spring rolls. I'll definitely be back to explore that big, beautiful menu. read more

I can't say enough about how awesome the banh mi are here. I'm used to bahn mi from the Vietnamese section in Brooklyn ($4.00-$4.50 per, with perfect spice and homemade pate and bread). These are almost as good, definitely the best I've found in SLC so far, and even less expensive. The meats and pickled vegetables are always fresh and tasty, the bread (although a bit too much for my taste) is perfectly crispy on the outside/soft on the inside, and the spice is burn-your-mouth worthy. I promise: Try the pork meatball, grilled pork, and combination banh mi and you won't be disappointed. Also delicious are the spring rolls . . . so much so that my mouth is watering a little just remembering them . . . and the Vietnamese coffee. It's a 40-minute roundtrip drive for me to get there, and it's well worth every minute. read more

Great local Cafe with the greatest Bun Bo Hue (spicy beef noodle soup) in town. The BBQ Banh Mi is also a favorite. The bread can be too crunchy ( I prefer the chewier texture) on some days, but it still makes a great lunch. Never leave without getting a Cafe Sua Da (vietnamese iced coffee with condensed milk)!! One taste and you will never go for the other place's watered down version. This one has the perfect amount of coffee and sweetness. I usually like ordering their combination sandwich but lately I feel like they changed some things or the sandwich is missing something for sure the bread is different last night I ate half the sandwhch and found 2 small plastic in the meat as I was chewing it not once but twice I don't think that's normal not only that but the quality of the food didn't taste as fresh ether. I think the plastic was from cutting the pate roll or cold cut meats and some of the pieces were stuck on the meat still. Have been searching far and wide for a legitimate Vietnamese Sandwich shop in this town and I have now found it! The real perk is that they sell more than sandwiches, and their menu is full of classic Vietnamese dishes and favorites for all who are familiar. First off, the owners had cafes in Southern Cali...Garden Grove area to be exact...and if you know Orange County, that is the MECCA of Vietnamese food. Now that's a plus. Also the owners are super nice and make delicious food. Obviously. I had the grilled chicken sandwhich (sorry, I don't know how the actual name) and spring rolls. The grilled chicken was quite flavorful and warm for a change. The sandwich was filled with fresh cilantro, jalapeno, carrots, relish, mayo, and a special sauce (hoisin?) with fresh baked crispy baguette. Yumm-o. And the spring rolls were classic as well. This is probably my favorite place in the Salt Lake Valley for some Vietnamese foods! They have Banh Mi, Pho, Bun Cha Gio (rice noodles and fried pork egg rolls), and of course, Vietnamese iced coffee. I've probably been here about 5-6 times now. My recommendation would be to try the Banh Mi first. I like the grilled chicken banh mi. They put in a good amount of vegetables and meats and are prepared in a timely manner. I never leave without ordering one of the Vietnamese iced coffees with condensed milk. It's sweet, but it also has the right amount of bitterness that I look for in typical Vietnamese iced coffee. After you're done with the banh mi, try out the other foods they have available. I haven't tried the Pho, yet, but I did try the rice noodles and egg rolls. Another good dish! I had the grilled pork and pork egg roll. Van, the manager, couldn't have been more friendly. I was there late in the evening and he took time to answer my questions. I learned he is a family man from Ho Chi Minh originally. He makes many friends and is a hard worker that excels in customer service and more. His restaurant was nice and had a band area in the back that he uses for his drum playing hobby. His wife is really in charge but he helps out a bunch from what I can tell. Went there yesterday for an early dinner. The place was empty. Went up to the counter to place our order. I saw that they have food on display in styrofoam trays wrapped in plastic wrap to buy. I went to pick one up and noticed something crawling on it. I pointed it out to the cashier. It was a baby cockroach. She nonchalantly grab a paper towel and smashed it on the counter. The sandwiches here are mediocre. They don't use the traditional baguette sandwiches. I been here a few times for sandwiches but after my recent experience, I wont be coming back! I am very disappointed with the poor customer service this place has. I ordered 2 special sandwiches and 2 bbq pork. The cashier charged me .50 cents since I used a card. That's fine. When I got my order, there was only 3 sandwiches and she apologized for leaving 1 sandwich out. That's fine. But she rang me up for another one and told me I needed a minimum of $5 to run the transaction..even though it was her mistake. So I had to spent another $5 when she had messed up my order. We came here on a Sunday afternoon with a party of six. Awesome time. We ordered things all over the menu and everything was fantastic and prices are great. They will make a great vegetarian Pho on request though its not on the menu. It is made with beef broth if your hard cor vegan..sorry. Spring rolls are awesome with shrimp and a really great thin sliced pork and the peanut sauce is unique...really good. I really like this place. The sandwiches and smoothies are delicious, and the prices are very reasonable. There are only two things keeping me from giving it a full five stars: 1. They close far too early. If they were open for dinner I would go once a week, but they seem to only be open during business hours 2. They run out of key ingredients a lot. The last time I was there they were out of the jelly they put in the smoothies. That's understandable, but 2 other times I've been there, hours before they close, they have run out of bread for the sandwiches. Which seems like a big problem when you're a sandwich shop.
