The hubby and I went for brunch, but not for the first time, and certainly not the last. I love the quaint outdoor seating especially during beautiful weather. This is an order at the counter place, and the food is brought to your table. The line can get long in the weekends particularly, but it moves fast and you can peruse the menu while you wait. I ordered The Goods Toast with an add on of poached eggs, as I often do, and an Iced Mexican Mocha. Both so delicious!

The hubby ordered a Crack breakfast burrito - Cardiff Crack, that is. IYKYK. Always a solid choice. The servers are friendly and helpful. What more could you ask for?

If you get here at peak times be prepared to wait in the sun. We came in on Saturday at around 10am and waited for an hour just to get in. The concept is to order your food first and then grab a table to sit down. It would be a great idea for them to have a canopy out on the sidewalk so there could be some shade. The service staff was great; they are all friendly but boy was it busy. I don't mind the concept of the order first and then sit, but it really felt like I was trying to compete to get a spot to sit. It could be a skill-diff on my end. I do like how they have seasonals on the left side of the entrance. Make sure to look for those as it is easy to miss. I got the topes scramble; the portion is pretty good! I don't think you can mess up a scramble unless you burn it.

We also got the country fried steak and the buttermilk pancake. For drinks we got the tea, I like that it is refillable! Very worth it and they will bring you a togo cup. My rating was a 3 star just for the wait but bumped it up to 4...

Cafe Topes in Carlsbad serves some seriously delicious food, but the overall environment and service could use some tuning. Heads up: you wait in a line to order at the counter, get a number, then seat yourself and wait for food and drinks. If you're expecting table service, this isn't that type of spot. The line was long and moved slowly, though clearly they're not short on customers. There's plenty of seating both inside and outside, which is nice. I ordered the Breakfast Burrito with chorizo and swapped the chips for well-done hashbrowns for an extra charge--great choice, and they nailed it. My partner ordered the Soy Chorizo Scramble, but it came with seasoned potatoes instead of hashbrowns. They fixed it fairly quickly, but the food runner removed our table number while taking the plate back. So when a different runner brought out the corrected dish, she wandered around inside and outside trying to figure out who it belonged to. Just a small example of how the system could be more organized. Drinks were a mixed bag: the iced vanilla latte was average, and the Rumway was so strong my partner could barely taste the pineapple. All that said, the food itself was outstanding. If they tightened up the ordering process and service flow, this place would easily be a top-tier breakfast stop.

I wish I could up my rating because I really do like this place. Unfortunately, the day we came we had a series of misfortunes. My friend loves cinnamon rolls and they are known for theirs, so I thought she'd enjoy it. I had tried one years ago and remembered liking it. We arrived and ordered a cinnamon roll and 2 drip coffees. The girl at the counter asked if we wanted cream & sugar. My friend said she did not want cream, just plain milk because she does not like the thickness of cream. She gave us our coffee, number, one napkin and silverware (forks & knives) and we sat. After a while she brought my friend oat milk. I thought I'd missed that my friend had ordered oat milk (I ended up using it), but after the girl walked away, my friend said she had not. Plus, she didn't bring sugar or spoons and we had to ask for another napkin. The coffee was lukewarm (before adding any cold oat milk) so my friend went in to see if we could get hot coffee. The girl said they would have to brew more. She brought us the cinnamon roll which was huge, warm and flavorful, but $8.50 for a cinnamon roll seems a bit high. Eventually, she brought out our coffees and milk for my friend and they were warmer, but far from hot. I want to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they were having an off day, but it was definitely frustrating. Since both of my issues have been with the coffee I think I will just stick to food if I return.

Cafe Topes in Carlsbad is an absolute brunch gem. From the moment you walk in, the atmosphere is warm, lively, and welcoming--perfect for a relaxed brunch with friends or family. The menu is creative and packed with delicious options, and everything we ordered was amazing. One of the standout features was their creative mimosa selection. It's such a fun twist on the classic brunch drink and makes the whole experience feel a little more special. Between the great vibe, attentive service, and incredible food, brunch at Cafe Topes was a total win. If you're in Carlsbad and looking for a spot with fantastic brunch and a great atmosphere, this place should definitely be on your list.

Love the unique menu items at Cafe Tropes that includes Cardiff Crack eggs Benedict and signature coffee/matcha drinks. Gluten free bread is available for the sandwiches and scrambles. All the pancakes except the protein pancake can be modified GF. The texture of the GF pancake was light and fluffy but the ricotta was lacking the lemon flavor and overall was a bit bland. Cafe Topes is my favorite spot for brunch. It has this beach, relaxing and pleasant vibes especially in a sunny day. The line was long but it moved very fast. We ordered: - The salad 5/5 It had mixed green, green apple, candied walnuts, strawberries, and blue cheese - Fish Tacos 4.5 / 5 I chose grilled fish. It was topped with pico de gallo, spicy aoli, and cabbage.It was very tasty. - Fish and chips 5/5 Beer buttered fish was so good and it came with a choice of salad or French fries. The amount was very reasonable. - Crab scramble with biscuit 5/5 The crab scramble was very savory and the biscuit was very buttery For drinks we got : - 2 Hawaiian express 5/5 - Hot chocolate with whipped cream 5/5 The service was fast. The staff were very friendly and energetic. It is a great spot for breakfast, brunch or to grab some refreshing drinks.

Came to kickoff the new year with my sister! We finished a busy morning at the movies and then did a little shopping. We came very hungry! And this place did not disappoint. They have dining inside and outside. I ordered a burrito and my sister ordered yogurt with fruit and both were absolutely delicious! You can choose what kind of meat or sides that you want with the burrito. Side options are potatoes, chips, or fruit Meats for the burrito are ham, chorizo, sausage, for bacon I got the side of chips and it comes with salsa. Anything additional like avocado is an extra charge. The hibiscus lemonade was absolutely delicious. Very refreshing. We came during the holiday weekend so it was busy a lot of children. Service was great! Our server was checking up on us very frequently. She made sure our glasses of water were filled. Great location in Carlsbad. Beach is a walk-in distance along with many small stores. I give this spot a 10/10 Thank you so much for your service, and food! We will be seeing you in the future

My favorite breakfast spot in North County. Got the chorizo Benedict and their chorizo is so authentic and fresh! Pro tip: get the potatoes extra crispy-- it is sooo good! Will def be coming back for more! :)

In my opinion a very mid brunch option!! My boyfriend and I visited for the second time on a Saturday around noon. Plenty of street parking. The line was out the door and it took 20 minutes to order and another 15 for our food to come out. It's a good space for both indoor and outdoor dining, but a lot of the tables were dirty. Service was average. We ordered the breakfast burrito and chicken sandwich. Apparently they have special menus on the wall but you completely walk past them. The food was pretty mid. Not enough meat in the breakfast burrito but lots of egg. My chicken sandwich was dry. I wouldn't recommend this spot, sorry!

What a lovely spot to add to your list, whether just driving through or in town for a few days, you have to make it over to this spot. This place gets packed but don't let that scare you off from how quick and efficient the food comes out and how well this place works. The workers are all so sweet and friendly and the fact that they go above and beyond for their furry friends is even sweeter. The food for starters since I'm Gluten Free, is a huge hit. From GF pancakes to bread options and sometimes pastries, It's a hit for me everytime. The coffees and the occasional mimosa are also a great compliment for the food. And if you're lucky enough to get your hands on a cinnamon roll, don't hesitate. Cafe Topes is my go to place at the moment!!

Fantastic find in downtown Carlsbad. Parking streetside is pretty easy. Order and then sit down with the provided number card. They have both indoor and outdoor patio options Heard great things about this place and was excited to try on a rare weekday brunch. They had a fantastic Crack Burrito (Tri tip steak with eggs and cheese) which was fantastic! The red salsa on the side was great with the chips and the burrito. Definitely one of my favorites I've had. Also got their Lavender mocha, which I've never had as a mocha (usually latte) which worked well. Their homemade cinnamon roll was good, but interestingly using more of a bread base than pastry base, which I wasn't expecting. I'm still unsure if I love or disliked it but was a good try for sure. Definitely will be back when nearby.

Ambiance and decor was great. Order at the front and pay first including the tip. :/ We waited 30 min for our food. The James (chicken fried steak) was solid and the pork belly benedict was nearly there but both of my poached eggs were overcooked to the point of almost hard boiled. The coffee was not the best, imagine office coffee. No one came by to offer a warm up so I don't know if they do refills. It was my first time here so maybe it was an off day for them. Overall it's a good place for brunch. I'd recommend coming early and bringing no more than a group of 4. read more

I had the chicken fried steak and it was delicious. If your looking for tasty breakfast and don't mind the cost Topes is the place. Don't expect service though; you have to get your own silverware, napkins, and jellies for your toast which is why you may want to think twice about putting a tip on your bill at the register. I'm not cheap but I'm not tipping just because there are people bringing patrons food-that's called a job. read more

Good but not excellent. Country Benedict good and yolk perfectly funny. Veggie scramble ok. Both a tad bland. Potatoes with the scramble a bit mushy. Please use jam/jelly other than smuckers packets with high fructose corn syrup!! Ambiance great and service friendly. I wish they'd put the menus closer to the door rather than on the counter since the line is out the door at times. Easily walkable from the beach hotels. read more

Tried for the first time this morning and couldn't be more pleased. The seating is a little limited inside but great outdoor seating when weather is permitting (not today)! Great coffee and yummy food! We got the Mac'n Benedict, sausage burrito, and kids pancake/egg/bacon. You order and seat yourself and they bring the food to your table. Great outdoor seating. Great atmosphere and good for kids. We have amour 4 year old and 1 year old with us. If I lived locally I would definitely eat here again. Got to love a restaurant that features Cardiff Crack...don't be alarmed...it is the famous Tri-Tip from Seaside Market in Leucadia...my favorite place for lunch or breakfast. A gastropub without the pub. Highly recommended to all Foodies. read more

The smoked salmon Benedict( I don't believe that is the actually name on the menu) is really good. First time here definitely gonna come back again. The Levander mocha is a bit to sweet for my preference but you can always ask for less sugar so it doesn't hurt. read more

Decent brunch and lunch spot in Carlsbad. Diverse menu, some things better than others. I've been here a few times, had the breakfast burrito, a salad with chicken, chicken fried steak, pancakes, eggs, etc. Overall I'd say the food is good, not great. The one item I was not impressed by was the cinnamon bun. I thought it was dry and you'd be better off getting a cinnamon bun at vons. But other than that, a cute eclectic brunch spot. read more

Best breakfast food!!! We got the Maui pancakes... sooo goood!! I will definitely come back to this place and the service was amazing. The employees were nice and attentive and although this place was packed, we were given 5 star service! The outside seating is relaxing and the veggies omelette order was also amazing. We also got this acai bar pastry and it was so good. If it was possible to not get as full as I did I would've ordered so many other plates. Highly recommend this restaurant!!! The second time we visited this place was also great. We got the soyrizo burrito and it was delicious. The only thing that did bother me about the service was that we ordered French toast and we asked for syrup and there were several other people asking for syrup and the waitress kept taking the same bottle of syrup around the tables for people to use. I thought that was pretty rude and inconvenient for the customers who kept asking for it. Obviously it's a breakfast place and people will use syrup. I don't know why the waitress couldn't get more bottles of syrup or I'm not sure if the restaurant was lacking extra bottles. But anyways, that was the only thing that bothered me. Other than that I will continue to come and recommend this place ! :) read more

My fiancé and I came across this spot. I'm so glad we decided to stop by. It was totally worth it! The food is tasty, the seasoning is just perfect. Usually when we've gone to a restaurant we have to add salt on our food because it has no flavor , but this place was beyond delicious. Loved there horchata latte iced and their Mexican Benedict! We also tried their famous cinnamon roll and oh my was It delicious. They make their own bread there. Definitely better than Cinnabon. Took my mom for brunch for her birthday, having to order before being seated is a little weird but the food was great and there was a great selection of eggs benedict, too bad the salmon locks was sold out. Just ok! Went here based on reviews and food was just ok- nothing to rave about but not too bad either. Coffee is a let down, was expecting a delicious brew and I was disappointed. This place is delish! We had pancakes, french toast, omelette, and protein pancakes. Everything was SO yummy! We got a side of sausage patties (huge!) and my daughter said it was the best sausage ever! We arrived around 11am for brunch and the cinnamon rolls were already sold out. Next time, we know to arrive earlier! The wait was about 30-40 min after we ordered, which seems to be pretty good for a weekend morning. Staff was friendly. Wow Wow Wow!! Best little gem in Carlsbad for breakfast. We had the double header eggs benedict special and it was soooo delish! My daughter had the banatella pancakes which were also yummy and the blackberry lemonade was really good, but not very large. I would highly recommend this restaurant. read more

Been here twice for breakfast before heading out to the breweries and it's been great every time. Not much seating, first come, first serve but really nice place for brunch. All the food choices sound amazing. The only compaint is lots of flies buzzing around if your table when you're eating, but what can you do. read more

Came here after reading all the great reviews and left pretty disappointed. First of all, there is a long line out the door - which can be expected on Sunday mornings. What makes this uncomfortable is that you are literally standing right next to people in the outdoor seating area that are eating. Service was fine. Everyone was pleasant. I just don't understand how we were asked to tip before we were served??? On to the food...we ordered The Basic, The 222 and their famous cinnamon roll. I completely understand that these are basic items so we shouldn't expect magic. But we did expect decent eggs, toast, potatoes, bacon...it was all just okay. Eggs were tasteless and lukewarm, potatoes overpowered with garlic and the toast was not toasted...bacon was gummy. I was most looking forward to the cinnamon roll and it was the worst I've had. Very "bready" and dense (not in a good way). Oh and I can't leave out that there were flies everywhere. We will not be back. read more

This cafe has really friendly service, and excellent coffee (Stumptown!) The food is made with fresh ingredients and has great flavors...try the crack benedict or the veggie scramble. We also enjoyed the general ambiance, music and decor. Two thumbs up! read more

My family ate here for breakfast and every item we had was wonderful! The eggs Benedict with pulled pork and pineapple was a flavor burst. So creative and perfectly executed. The cinnamon roll was a nice appetizer before our breakfast came but only order one for a table of 4 because they are HUGE. We will be back again and will be telling all of our friends! read more

From the moment you walk through the front doors, it's clear that this place is something special. The charming atmosphere, paired with the mouthwatering smells coming from the kitchen, sets the tone for a wonderful dining experience. The music was perfectly selected, with a chill vibe that matched the beach town feel. The staff was attentive and hardworking, always on their feet, and their guidance on the menu was especially helpful as both my husband and I had a hard time choosing. We began with drinks: the Hawaiian Express and the Peppermint White Mocha. The Hawaiian Express was a standout for me--its coconut-infused espresso flavor was absolutely delicious, and I'd rate it a solid 5/5. My husband tried the Peppermint White Mocha but was a bit disappointed, giving it a 3/5. He felt the peppermint flavor was too subtle, and the drink's texture became grainy toward the end. Next up was the Mom's Famous Cinny Roll, and wow--it was amazing! A perfect 5/5. The icing was heavenly, and I'd highly recommend opting for it "dirty" (extra icing) for the full experience. The Cinny Roll itself was light and fluffy, so much so that it felt like you could easily eat several in one sitting. The only slight critique we had was that the cinnamon flavor could have been a bit more pronounced, as the extra icing tended to dominate the dish's flavor profile. Perhaps a sprinkle of cinnamon on top would balance it out, but overall, it was an indulgent treat. Finally, we shared the Crack Breakfast Burrito, which was bursting with bold, flavorful spices. We highly recommend any of their "crack" dishes--they're definitely worth trying. I'd give it a 5/5. If there's a wait for the sauce, don't skip it--it's absolutely worth the wait. One thing we would suggest skipping, though, is the chips and salsa. The salsa was on the watery side, and we ended up not eating much of it. Next time, I'd opt for a different side. I ordered the breakfast burrito, my husband got the Crack Benedict, and my kiddo had the "111." To drink, I had a matcha, and my husband had an iced vanilla coffee. The food was fresh and flavorful -- here's how I'd rate everything: Kids 111 Breakfast: 8/10 -- simple, classic, and perfectly done. Breakfast Burrito: 7/10 -- tasty, but could've been even better with a cream-based salsa like avocado or cilantro crema. Crack Benedict: 7/10 -- the hash browns were unreal, crispy and flavorful. My husband just realized he's not a steak Benedict guy, but that's a personal preference. Matcha: 1/10 -- unfortunately, this one missed the mark. Definitely low-grade matcha and not worth $6. We started this yelp as a way to blog our food and we started off really splendid! We went in mid morning and were surprised by how busy it was (where I come from that's a good sign) first thing we liked was how open the kitchen was, and it looked so clean, a really tall chef was laughing and dancing and it looked like such a good time in the kitchen. Next thing we noticed was the huge menu, so many options, wait 10 minutes for huge options for lunch? Or dive into the giant breakfast? Decided to go with the breakfast, I did the veggie scramble and she did the double header Benedict, lavender coffee is a must as was recommended by the sweet girl at the register (she was training but doing very well) after about 5 minutes out walks these monuments to breakfast, my scramble was the perfect amount of veggies piled into fresh egg scrambled right in that sweet spot 10/10 on the hash browns as well and a nice thick toast. My wife said she's never had such perfectly poached eggs before today. All and all it was really well done. Servers are sweet and that kitchen is a blast to watch! Will be back and often read more

NEVER AGAIN! If you value your time and don't wish to be treated rudely, don't go here! After waiting more than an hour for our food (when we were told the wait would be 30 minutes) I noticed that several people who were in line behind us to order, already had their food and were halfway through their meals. When I inquired about the status of our order, I was told "they are plating it now"...and still waited an additional 15 minutes....for eggs?! We decided to leave and wanted our money back. The manager was condescending and couldn't have cared less that she had some dissatisfied customers. When I asked how it was possible that people behind us in line already had their food and we didn't, she said "I don't need your attitude"! Whoa! Not a voice was raised, not a rude word uttered...other than by her (the manager). Sorry but, north county is filled with way too many outstanding restaurants (who actually remember that their customer is where they make their money!) to waste my time here. read more

Carlsbad just got GOOD ! Cinnamon Rolls ...OM-Gosh ! THE BEST ! Homemade, yummy treat ! Crack and Eggs...perfection.... Pretzel buns....Garlic Burger was to die for....... This Cafe' beats all other cafes in and around Carlsbad... food made with love ! The only reason I deducted 1-star was I really think they should have table Servers, due to the volume of business and such, it would be nice to order and know you have a table especially on weekends when they are busy, it adds a personal touch to the love of food the owners are giving you, I think in speaking with my neighbors and friends who have been here multiple times, they all agreed, table Servers would be a huge boost to business, weekends add a Hostess to seat, Servers for table service, you already have excellent service but that would add the final personal touch to this grand food experience. I really wanted to love this place when I first came here based on all the great things I had heard. Unfortunately, I did not experience any of these great things upon my visit. Service: Girl at front register seemed unenthusiastic and had problems answering questions we had regarding basic menu items. Food: I settled on a classic eggs benedict with no canadian bacon, sautéed potatoes and a coffee. Coffee was basic, nothing special at all. Benedict came out with cold potatoes and very over-poached eggs. After mentioning this to the staff, they took my plate and returned 30 seconds later with a plate that had clearly been microwaved. At this point, I was too hungry to make more of a deal about it. I was going for 2 stars but their cute atmosphere earned another star. There are plenty of other breakfast/brunch places in better locations that are much more worth checking out. read more

Cafe Topes is the kind of spot that makes you feel right at home the moment you walk in. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with a relaxed vibe that encourages you to settle in and enjoy your meal. Time for an update since my last review was over 9 years ago. 4/5 Crack tacos - fresh, solid, tasty filling, tender meat, didn't skimp on avocado or meat. 2/5 Fish and chips - fish itself was good but the overall breading was soggy and so were the fries. I don't believe in my whole life I have had a soggy fish and chips. How does that even happen? It appeared a dark brown, cooked breading? Did someone leave it sitting on the counter for too long? I don't know but it was terribly disappointing. Definitely missed not having real tartar sauce. I know they are trying to make fun and good food but I find when coming here the food is hit or miss. Most items with the crack tri tip are good and other than that I try to stick to things you can't mess up like breakfast burritos. read more

I've never had anything bad here. The food is not exactly inventive, but very solid. A weekend treat is getting the Crack 'n' eggs for breakfast. It's Cardiff Crack tri tip and eggs and is so so so good every time. I've had their benedict before and their omelets are always spot on too. My only criticisms are that they have gotten my sides wrong on more than one occasion and the line is always ridiculous. But frankly, if you're just having a lazy Sunday brunch, sitting in line for 15 minutes isn't too terrible, is it? Lastly, the succulent wall is very impressive (I happen to love succulents) and sitting in the dining room seems to almost be mellowed out by this giant living wall. Found this amazing place cause it was on our way home and if nothing else the people here are extremely friendly and genuinely happy. I've not come across such nice people in a long time! The food was mouth watering and the portions were big . This is the place to stop if you do not live around here and if you do then you're missing out for sure. On another note the restaurant is clean and the bathroom was clean too. I took my daughter and I didn't cringe when I walked in. It was actually really clean and smelled good . My recent visit to Cafe Topes left me quite satisfied. The chicken fried steak was an absolute highlight, boasting a delightful crispiness and expertly seasoned breading. Opting for the gravy on the side was a wise choice, allowing me to manage the creaminess to my preference. The blackberry Bellini was a burst of pure blackberry goodness - a delightful drink choice. I was equally pleased with the fluffy and delicious hash browns. While my experience was wonderful, a touch more variety in menu options could elevate it even further. Nevertheless, Cafe Topes dedication to crafting delectable dishes is clear, and I'm looking forward to returning to enjoy more of their culinary offerings! read more

I visited Cafe Topes last Labor Day weekend and while the experience had its ups and downs, it left me with mixed feelings. The wait time was quite long, which was a bit frustrating, especially considering the prices were on the higher side. For a cafe with that pricing, I expected a smoother experience. That said, the pancakes were definitely a highlight--fluffy and flavorful. However, the rest of the food was pretty average. I wouldn't say it was bad, but it didn't stand out enough to justify the wait or the cost. Overall, it's worth checking out for the pancakes, but the overall experience could be improved. read more

My husband & I have tried over 1/2 the menu & have yet to be disappointed,, It's hard to find a good family run , eatery Especially in Carlsbad today was no different my husband had the double header (not on the menu yet) classic Benedict & country Benedict on the Same plate. Ridiculous!!!!!! I had the fish tacos soooo good!! The staff is super friendly & the decor is classy & clean We will be back soon it's our favorite spot to just relax & enjoy a great meal.. My boyfriend and I recently visited Café Topes for the first time, and we had a great experience. When we arrived, the line to order was fairly long, but it moved quickly, and the staff were very friendly. I ordered my coffee dairy-free, but it was initially made with regular milk. Fortunately, the staff corrected the mistake right away. The food was absolutely delicious! I had the red chilaquiles--the salsa was mouth-watering. My boyfriend ordered the tri-tip tacos and really enjoyed them as well. Overall, we had a wonderful visit and would definitely recommend this place! read more

I want to like this place so bad, but I have a bad experience every time I go. :( I asked for an iced latte...they brought out a hot...no big deal...I told them I ordered an iced....they took my hot latte and poured it over ice! The ice melted in no time and I had a watered down latte that wasn't even worth drinking. Plus, all the food that I've ordered there has been mediocre at best. :-/ On the bright side, the place is super cute. I live in the Palms Springs area so I believe this gives me some credibility about reviewing restraunts. I have been to Cafe Topes several times with my wife and each time is more amazing than the last. I have read the reviews on here and some really irritate me. The place has been open less than 3 mos. so give them a break. If you have a gripe, let Joe and Jacquie know as I know they will make it right with you. Absolutely loved this place! The food was delicious, fresh, and beautifully prepared. The service was impressively fast without sacrificing friendliness, which made the whole experience even better. Their cinnamon roll is hands-down one of the best I've ever had--soft, warm, and perfectly sweet. The lattes were not only tasty but also adorable, with cute latte art that made them extra special. Yes that's right. If you are Hispanic, black or any other race rather than white then you're advised not to even think about entering this place. Only the kitchen people are Hispanic. Front of the house are all white. Discrimination to the maximum. The owners are racist and if you step foot into this cafe you will be looked down and throw a lot of unwelcome vibes at you like you absolutely don't deserve to be treated with the same dignity and respect. The food here is hit or miss, some of it is delicious & at other times it's just ok. The benedicts & huevos rancheros are my fav...the coffee needs some serious help, I've tried several different types from lattes to mochas & the foam was gone very quickly, not velvety smooth & not so great. Hopefully they can train their baristas, the location is great & the staff is super helpful & friendly. But I won't go here unless I've already had coffee elsewhere as I find it lackluster. read more
