Yelp led me here and it did not disappoint! A panini place with fabulous espresso drinks?! Say what?! Yep, I almost didn't order one after lunch, but saw the espresso machine and decided to give it a chance. The man behind the counter is a rock star! Taking and memorizing orders, ringing up takeout orders in and out, and churning out wonderful lattes. Love this place! The panini sandwiches come with a side salad of fresh greens with a wonderful lemon, olive oil type dressing. All in my party enjoyed their sandwiches; really wonderful flavor combinations are offered on their menu. Salads sounded great, giving that a try next time I'm in town. read more

This is a wonderful spot to stop in a grab a solid meal and a good cup of coffee. I ordered the California omelette and the Windansea bagel. Both meals come out quickly and with incredibly fresh ingredients. The service here is equally fantastic. Very personable staff that feels like you're ordering food from your life long neighbors. Hands down, no lie, the BEST omelette I've ever had in my life. I ordered the California omelette and it was AMAZING. My husband ordered the six dollar breakfast and we were pleasantly surprised with the quantity and quality of the special. Super good. My daughter ordered the açaí bowl and loved it! A very cute local cafe that seemed to be family owned. Appeared to be a favorite among the locals when I visited. There were guys playing chess on the table next to me and looked like they had been there all morning. Strange ordering system: order at the front, sit down and eat your meal when it's served, and pay afterwards..definitely a strong trust system. Decently priced - around $7.50 for a spinach omelette with buttered toast, too much cheese in my opinion. Had a berry smoothie to go but a little watery. Would definitely come back! read more

The best local spot ever! I almost didn't want to write a Yelp review because I don't want to reveal this secret place! I have been going to Cafe Vahik (previously known as Windansea Cafe) since I was a teenager. Vahik (the owner) knows me by name and can usually guess my order. For breakfast, you cannot go wrong with the California bagel (my ALL TIME favorite)! Get it to-go and walk down one block to the beach and watch the surfers shred. If you are in a lunch/sandwich mood, you cannot go wrong with the Ham Diegan or the Turkey Breeze. The Ham Diegan has an amazing apricot mayo. The only negative thing I can say about Cafe Vahik is that it is a little slow. If you are in a hurry, call in and place your order. Vahik will have it ready for you. read more

Great food at a great price with super friendly staff and an ideal location. My wife and I were staying in La Jolla on vacation and found Vahik's cafe on Yelp. We took out almost three year old son and we're instantly greeted when we walked through the door by Vahik's and his wife. We ordered and sat inside. The ambiance is lovely with many large photographs taken by a local photographer. As we waited for our food every person who walked through the door was greeted personally, and many were greeted by name (I suppose they were the regulars). So friendly. We loved our breakfast and afterward walked down to the beach and took a stroll near the water. We would definitely come back again. read more

I've been a customer since he first opened in 2001 at a coffee kiosk on the La Jolla Boulevard from day one and followed him up until today of which he is consistent with quality and the best Mexican mocha ever and I mean ever. All the food on the menu is delicious, fresh and made to order. If you are in the area I highly suggest you stop in and check his place out. You will not be disappointed. This joint is probably more of a lunch spot than it is a breakfast spot. We stopped for breakfast and it was good. Ya know, hard to screw up eggs, bacon and toast which is what my lovely ordered. I got the lox/cream cheese on an everything bagel which rocked! Nana ordered eggs scramble bagel and the teen got a caramel macchiato. It was what we needed while hungry and vacationing. This is a great place to grab a panini by the beach! The owner suggested the yellowtail sandwich and said it's his best seller. It looked and smelled delicious but we just weren't in the mood for fish. He also suggested the TJ turkey which sounded good to us and did not disappoint. It was turkey, a chipotle pesto, fontina cheese, avocado, and tomato served with a generous side salad. The bread was a sourdough perfectly crispy for the panini. They have a great selection of hot sauces. My fiancé has a large selection of hot sauces. When we came across one we had never seen before, with his favorite Mexican pepper the chiltepin, we had to take a bottle home with us. Delicious! Solid panini and warm service. Came here with my husband and felt super rushed to order. I was standing at the counter looking over the menu on the wall which was an extremely small font. Extremely rude gentleman working here says "what do you want"-no "hi" or "how are you doing today." The guy working the counter started taking a man behind me's order-he must have been a regular but I AM NOT and therefore need a minute to decide what I want to order before I even had a chance to look over their drinks list. Ended up rushing and ordering an iced coffee bc I didn't have a chance to look over the menu. Rude customer service. Never coming back. Food was mediocre. We came here on Father's Day. My kids didn't know what they wanted right away, and the lady was rude, and was trying to rush us. I couldn't read the menu and she rushed me too. I also felt the menu was very limited. Afterward we got the food, my husband had to wait in line again to pay. Also, the place is tiny and cramped. The food and coffee was mediocre. And the restroom was gross - there was poop in the bowl. Made me wonder how "clean" their kitchen is. Not coming back. I hate to leave bad reviews but this place left a sour note. My son did give a 5star for the juice, but I can't even say that - the juice seem like concentrated OJ bought at the supermarket. And note to "Eric" that left a comment that "then your brats should have decided on items before going up to the counter" - my kids are not brats but well behaved kids. There was no menu to look at and choose beforehand, and the menu above is hard-to-read. The lady at the counter had 0 customer service experience, and was rude, and tried to rush us. I think this place asks their friends and regulars to leave rude comments on people that leave honest reviews about this place. I am sorry but I do not accept rude comments. Vahik is the man. I can't believe I lived at Windansea for over two years before I tried this place. I read the previous review where someone felt insulted by him, but I've never had anything but positive experiences. I recently bumped up my review to 5 stars as I've now had a chance to sample a few of the menu items: Mayan Mocha.....get it with cayenne pepper even if it sounds bizarre. Portuguese Soup.......don't think its on the menu, but if he's got it ask about it. Mediterranean Bagel........perfectly balanced egg sandwich Rambling Roast Beef.....had it on sourdough and it was perfect. Chickanini......not as amazing as the above items, but it is chicken so you can't expect it to be amazing. read more

A quintessential neighborhood cafe with high quality, tasty and reasonably priced food with a particularly friendly and welcoming vibe. I've been coming in daily for a few weeks and am now asked "the regular?" when I walk in, to which, I always answer "yes" for my customized spinach omelette which is a 10 out of 10. They seem to know all their customers, and I witness warm exchange after warm exchange when I'm here. Most customers seem to be take-out, so there's always plenty of room to hang out inside or outside on the covered patio. It's very comfortable here. I love it here. This place was GREAT. The owners here are always impossibly friendly, very involved in their business (do they ever take a day off?!), and the food is great. The quantities are perfectly large. A single breakfast bagel sandwich is plenty for a big eater. The blended coffee drinks are delicious. The yellowtail sandwich or salad is just killer, and you're gonna love the ceviche. The service and friendly atmosphere are where they really shine. Who tells *strangers* that they can sit down, their food will be brought out to them, and they can pay after they're done eating?! There's few places in this world where you're treated with such hospitality. Wow, Fail on efficiency. The girl taking orders did not know half the menu items and the owner had to keep telling her what to write down as the order. Then instead of paying after you order they tell you to come back and pay later. So I could lie and say I got a cheaper dish? Or just run out on my bill if I am sitting outside? Then it took me about 45 minutes to get my lunch. 45 MINUTES! Omg. Why? Because they forgot to make my order. Was the food worth the wait or any wait at all? NOPE.
