Small cafe on the corner with a surfer vibe on the inside. The food was pretty good, definitely would return again. Got a burrito and sandwich. Staff looked serious but was surprisingly very helpful and nice.

Food: 5/5 Coffee: 4/5 Service: 5/5 Atmosphere: 4/5 If I hadn't noticed this spot along my running route the past few runs, I never would've realized it was here. I'm really glad I finally stopped in. Cafe Vahik definitely feels more food-forward. They have a great selection of bagels, paninis, and salads. While they do serve coffee, lattes, and smoothies, tasty food and genuinely warm, local service seem to be where they really shine. From my single visit, it was very clear the owner is closely involved and incredibly personable with customers. In the 20-30 minutes I was there, several regulars came in and were greeted by name, with parts of their usual orders remembered. The food prep area is fully visible from the checkout counter, and I could see my food being made with care, which I really appreciated. For food, I ordered: Sunrise Turkey Panini: 5/5 Delicious. Perfectly pressed, warm, cozy, and with a great balance of flavors. If this sandwich is any indication of the rest of the menu, I'm genuinely impressed and excited to try more. For drinks, I ordered: Iced Latte: 4/5 When ordering, it wasn't totally clear whether they offered flavor syrups. In hindsight, I wish I had asked, because the latte itself was decent but left a little to be desired on its own. I think adding any sort of flavor would have elevated it easily. ATMOSPHERE: 4/5 The interior is a bit dated, but it's cozy and fits the quaint, hidden-local-gem vibe of the place. There are also a few outdoor patio seats, which is a nice bonus. My only very minor complaint was around the payment process. I ordered first, then received my latte, then my food, and then paid before eating but after receiving everything. The casual flow definitely matches the neighborhood feel, but I was a bit unsure of when I was supposed to pay and ended up standing around awkwardly for a moment. This could very well have been a one-off experience. If you're in this corner of Bird Rock and want a quick, delicious bite along with friendly conversation and a true neighborhood vibe, Cafe Vahik is absolutely worth checking out.

This is a long overdue updated review. My husband and I regularly pick up from Vahik and have enjoyed everything over the last decade! Our favorites include the yellowtail sandwich, playa Del Norte salad, chickanini, lox bagel, and ceviche. The salad is the only way I can get my husband to eat some greens! The ceviche has a kick to it and the fish is very fresh; it is only available on Thursdays and does run out. We also really love their hot drinks. The chai latte is one of my favorites and my husband always gets a caramel macchiato. Whenever my in-laws visit, they have to go to Vahik's at least once to get their coffee. They even have their own Cafe Moto blend. Vahik is definitely a local favorite. There are many regulars and he somehow remembers everyone's orders. Vahik knows my husband by voice whenever he calls ahead and doesn't even ask for his name for the order. You can call ahead to order; just note that you should provide the details fairly quickly as it can get busy. There are tables inside and a few outside as well. Order first and he'll call you when your food is ready and then you pay. ApplePay is accepted. I definitely recommend Cafe Vahik for great food and drinks. Get it to go and walk down to the beach!

The cafe be but unassuming from the outside though the steady flow of customers are a sign of a good tings! Its a small cafe located near the Windansea Beach. They serve up some killer California-style bagel sandwiches which come loaded with fresh ingredients. They have the classic coffee beverage which is served simple and to the point; nothing fancy. Husband and wife duo are usually manning the front. Their ability to expertly multi-task and handle a heavy flow of orders is a real skill and art form. They even somehow take phone orders among the throng of in-person orders. I like getting "The Farmer" bagel sandwich with egg, goat, cheese, and spinach and eating it at a bench at Windansea Beach, watching the surfers eat salt. A well loved business with many a regular saying "hello" to the owners. To call it a "hidden gem" isn't exactly accurate since they are often so busy, but a "gem" they are for sure!

    Chickenini

This sweet cafe was the highlight of our trip to La Jolla! The man behind the counter was always so friendly and welcoming to us, it was such a pleasant atmosphere. The iced chai and mocha were both delicious and the panini were EXCELLENT. I had the chickenini on sourdough and it was so yummy. I woke up craving it every day we were there! My boyfriend tried one of their bagel sandwiches and absolutely loved it as well. Highly recommend this local business!!!!

Local casual breakfast and lunch spot near wind and sea beach in La Jolla. Super friendly owner and very fast service. I went for both breakfast and lunch at the advice of my Airbnb hosts. The breakfast burrito is huge. And if it's ceviche day, make sure you go early for lunch and get some!

Hidden La Jolla gem with killer bagel sandwiches. Windansea and American bagel sandwiches are legit delicious. Super friendly service and awesome iced lattes seal the deal. Quick, tasty breakfast spot that just gets it right.

This spot is close to the Windansea Beach. It's a small cafe with indoor and patio seating. Service was quick. I ordered the Acai Smoothie and enjoyed it. My friends also enjoyed their coffee and lattes.

After being sat on the patio and before ordering, we checked out all the merch inside, an explosion of color and sparkle. The indoor seating is a room of inviting, plush, forest green chairs and the walls dripping in white and blush pink flowers. The quote "Cooking is my soul's desire, eating is my heart's calling" catches your eye on the north wall. One of my friend's and I decided to order 2 entrees and split them - the Spicy Shakshuka Sunrise Skillet (2 eggs poached with fire-roasted tomatoes, onion, bell pepper, fresno pepper, cilantro, yellow onion, feta, harissa, cumin, chili flakes, and sourdough bread) and the Windansea Breakfast Bagel (with scrambled egg whites, Irish cheddar, sauteed garlic spinach, and avocado on a Big City everything bagel). That was a smart call because both were amazing and re-orderable. The shakshuka was flavorful but not intolerable spicy hot. The bagel made the sammich. All was washed down with a Cafe Viennese (coffee with honey, cinnamon, and vanilla, a great sub for my usual Cinnamon Dolce Latte from Starbies). The service was great and engaging and not a hustle for us to churn and burn our meal. Would love to return and indulge in some of the retail in addition to some pancake or waffles. I only had 1 bite of the single fluffy pancake that my other girlfriend ordered...quite the tease.

I can't speak on the ambiance as inside dining was closed and only available on weekends. We sat outside the restaurant under a tented area, that had a nice decor. We only had a slight issue dealing with flies at our table having only outdoor seating available. Next time I would come on a weekend to be able to enjoy inside dining! It was our first visit and our waiter Chris was very knowledgeable of the menu items and gave us great recommendations being 1st timers! Customer service all around was great! As soon as we walked up, we were greeted immediately and sat down shortly thereafter. One upside to dining outside under the tent is we had no problem getting the attention of our waiter or any workers for that matter because it was such close quarters. It appeared they also had some tables set up outside the actually restaurants walls along their porch area. We ordered: The Big Bad Biscuit & Bird - Biscuit was thick and perfectly baked all the way through. Gravy lacked a bit of flavor for my liking, nothing that salt, pepper, and some of their hot honey sauce (that comes with the entree) couldn't fix! Chicken strips were thin but surprisingly not dry for its size, along with scrambled eggs. I enjoyed they did not skimp on the gravy as a good amount gravy is needed for their thick biscuits! Blueberry Love Pancakes - Lemon curd in the pancake itself was a treat but, the real star of the dish is the blueberry compote on top! Bread Pudding French toast - Perfect texture, not too soggy or wet but just enough moistness. DELICIOUS and MUST ORDER Strawberry Lemonade - strawberry flavor stood out and lemonade was not too sour. Nice balance of both flavors! Mango Lemonade - I was NOT A FAN! Unlike the strawberry lemonade, I was not able to taste ANY mango flavor at all! I definitely would be back to try more dishes but, on a WEEKEND, to be able to enjoy inside dining! This location is also a bakery although we were too full after our entrees to entertain baked goods. Definitely a location to consider if you need a good brunch location!

We didn't say anything, but it definitely didn't leave the best taste in our mouths. So double check your bill if you pick up a free coffee while waiting for your table. One of my favorite meals here is the risotto Benedict. It was still good, but unfortunately, it didn't taste quite as good as it normally does. After we left, my stomach was very upset, and I ended up having to make an emergency stop at the La Jolla Shores bathrooms before heading home. Our waiter was also a little slow. It took quite a while for our water to give us water after a long walk on the beach and then our bill took forever as well. On top of that, the waiter commented "Impressive" because I had finished my entire plate. I had been fasting for 24 hours, but regardless, I don't think commenting on how much a customer eats is really appropriate. It was just a little strange. Anyway, just a heads-up. I'm sure I'll come back, and hopefully everything will be back to normal and great as usual!

The taco appetizers were tasty, though pretty small, while the nachos were a generous size and loaded up with toppings. The cocktail menu was also fun & creative. It's easy to enjoy the perch on the side of the hill, with an immediate view of the Cove and the further views of the Shores, Glider Port and on a clear day, Torrey Pines. What comes with that view, is the smell of nature, and on Tuesday, it was stronger. It didn't interfere with our meal. The wait staff are all friendly, experienced, and approach the table appropriately. I can't relate to a setting where the server is there every couple of minutes. I tend to eat there more for breakfast and lunch, dinners less commonly. The menu is diverse enough for 2 picky eaters to always find something fantastic. On Tuesday, I had the clam and crab chowder and it was superb. I grew up in New England, the epicenter of chowders. I am known amongst friends, for the many chowders that I make at home. The salmon BLT is a recurrent favorite, as is the basic breakfast, tweaked to your preferences, with a wide array of protein options. Always grateful for knowing, without question, that a guest in town will enjoy a meal there.

Im going to be perfectly honest this was by far one of the worst dining experiences I've had just…read morein general but what made it worse was that we visited this place while on vacation. The family was pretty excited to try this place out and by the end of the meal, every single member of my family (all 5 people) were angry. The service was horrific. We came during lunch, they were not particularly busy and we were seated within 5 minutes. Let's start with the food. I ordered a $25 Wagyu burger and it was unseasoned. Not under seasoned, UNSEASONED. The patty was overcooked. I asked for medium rare and it was well done to a point where it was not even remotely enjoyable. This $25 burger did not come with fries, it came with a very small bowl of salad that had no salad dressing. The wrap my wife ordered was mediocre and lacking any flavor. The shrimp inside was good but everything else was bland. The one thing that was good was the seafood chowder. It was excellent. Very flavorful and rich. The best tasting thing at our table were the children's tater tots and the clam chowder to be very honest. Now onto the service. The service is arguably worse than the food. The waiter looked annoyed to take our order but what is egregiously worse than that is that in our entire time sitting there eating our food for more than 45 minutes, our server (or any member of the wait staff) literally did NOT come back once to check on us or ask us if the dishes were good or to give anyone water refills (we ordered a coke and that was not refilled the entire meal). I want to reiterate, we literally did not get a refill of our waters or the coke we ordered 1 time the entire meal. Our waters were empty 10 minutes into the food arriving but because no member of the wait staff came by to check on us, we resorted to drinking out the water bottles we brought ourselves. We tried to flag down a member of the wait staff 3 times and after, my wife just said 'let's just try to get out of here as soon as possible. This is ridiculous'. I also want to be clear, we were not in a separate room or in the corner, the door of the restaurant was visible, the bar where they serve alcohol was visible from our table. The wait staff just chose not to check on us and ignore our hands in the air trying to flag them down. They came after more than an hour to drop off the check without saying anything to us or ask about how the food was. We were so angry by that point we did not even bother to ask for a refill of water or coke. We just wanted to leave as soon as possible.
