Cute spot! Really appreciated the dog vibes here -- lots of pups on the weekend and good vibes overall. Staff were friendly! Shop had a cute backyard patio area for dogs which was great, said high to a lot of cuties. The horchata latte was good and loose leaf as well. There are also outdoor outlets! Dream come true! Can get loud so be sure to bring headphones and lots of treats.

I got an espresso and an oat milk macchiato. Both were excellent. The espresso was perfectly executed -- smooth, creamy, not bitter or burnt, and had great flavor coming through. I tasted notes of chocolate and a mild apple-like acidity -- sweet and warm, not sharp. 5/5 The macchiato had a little more milk than expected, but the oat milk complemented the espresso really well. 4.5/5 I'll definitely be back. If they're consistently this good, this could become one of my favorite spots in the East Bay.

Don't let the name Xochi, The Dog Cafe, mislead you like it did for us! We thought it was an ultra-dog-friendly cafe, but it's not. I got together with my coworker and wanted to bring my pup. Finding a spot was a bit tricky initially, but he recommended we check out Xochi. We arrived at the cafe on a Sunday afternoon. There was a sign saying no dogs allowed inside due to health and safety regulations (I understand) and how the cafe is named after their dog. My coworker ordered first and got us a table on their outdoor patio. The patio is dog-friendly and pleasant--vast, lush, and quaint. There are several tables spaced out to enjoy your drinks. The inside is minimalistic and roomy, with about three to four tables where you can work. We came on an off day, and they closed early. As a result, service seemed rushed, and we felt they wanted us to leave. Their Horchata Latte enticed me with Oat Milk. For the amount I paid, I felt like the quality and quantity didn't match. There was no horchata flavor, and it was super light on cinnamon. I don't think I'd come back to get this. This is a nice neighborhood coffee spot for those living in East Oakland. For others, especially paw-rents, this is just a PSA--it's dog-friendly outside! Parking is available in the neighborhood, with the shop on the corner of E 21st Street.

Adorable corner coffee shop with friendly staff and delicious food/drinks. Stopped in for an empanada and Horchata latte. Empanada crust was crisp and flaky. Horchata latte was perfect. The cafe seems to be a neighborhood hotspot.

Cool cafe especially if you have a pup! Nice choices and servers are so nice and accommodating. But really the best part is to bring your pup and let them roam around greet-sniffing other pups in the cage or in the backyard. It's social fun for them while you chill with your coffee!

Parking is surprisingly open more often than not, however, I, do not like this place and I wonder if that's why parking is often available.. The neighborhood coffee shop is nice, the poster board is a nice community touch and especially all the nookish seating outside. But the feel and customer service is OFF. I've tried here a few times... you're often never acknowledged until it's time to order ($ - and sometimes it's NOT that busy!) I was glad to see others also feel the employees are rude(ish) and passive aggressive? It's always a weird vibe. Seems like the owner knows he's gonna get business and that just stinks. I've always felt taken for granted here and not because my name is Xóchi. If you want a gentrified neighborhood coffee shop, this is your spot! I just came here one last time to find out the bread they used and they told me, so R.I.P. Xóchi the terribly named cafe.

I recently developed an allergy to onion and, unfortunately, onion is the only ingredient not listed to remove on the Saint Francis sandwich (on their website). I decided to call to place a pickup order so I could mention the allergy. The man who picked up the phone refused to take an order insisting that I must place my order online. I explained there wasn't the option to remove the ingredient and was worried since I had an allergy. He argued that I was mistaken, and I could edit the order online or order a "build your own sandwich" (without acknowledging the additional cost for such a thing). I mentioned the inaccessibility of such a system and that I truly wasn't seeing the option to remove ingredients. He spent longer arguing with me over the phone than it would have been to take my order over the phone. Eventually, I relented, and placed an online order stating in the "notes to seller" (the only way to edit an order in this case) no onion on the Saint Francis sandwich. There was onion on my sandwich. Maybe instead of believing they need to be right, they should just listen to the customer and try to accommodate.

But I have to wax poetic for a minute: today I ate the very best pastrami I have ever had. I grew up on the East Coast (as did the proprietor) and I have easily eaten 500 reuben sandwiches in my life (because they are pretty much the very best). This pastrami is absurd. It is thin. It is tender. It is flavorful. It is meaty but not stringy or fatty. It is moist. It is a love letter. It is a sweet whisper. It is goodness through and through. Made into a reuben, this pastrami is divine. I believe the proprietor makes his own thousand island dressing and it is just right. The bread has been pressed and grilled, and is neither tough nor soggy. You taste and feel the cheese, but it does not overwhelm. In short, I am in heaven. The proprietor of Modigliani Café grew up in a family that worked with meat, and he won an award when he was quite young for curing bacon (you can see the certificate on the wall in the shop). So my suspicion is that this pastrami is his creation. And I bet that bacon was the best ever. Pay Modigliani Café a visit. Everything I've ever ordered was delicious. Bring cash because they don't take cards.

They're only open Friday through Sunday from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., so I finally made the trip out on a Friday and arrived around 9:30 a.m. It was already fairly busy, and it only got more packed while I waited for my order so I would strongly recommend getting there before 9 a.m. or phoning your order in ahead of time. I ordered 4 sandwiches total, and it took somewhere between 30 and 45 minutes for everything to be ready, but both the #2 Special Combo Ham and the #13 Meatball and Egg were absolutely fantastic and well worth the wait. The #2 is how I benchmark a good banh mi, and this place really delivered. The pate was out of this world, the sandwich was piled high with delicious cold cuts, loaded with perfectly pickled veggies and jalapeños, and stuffed into a roll that had the perfect balance of a crisp exterior and pillowy interior. The #13 seemed to be a popular choice as well and for good reason. It had all the same great attributes as the #2, but with the pate and cold cuts replaced by a sweet and savory crumbled meatball paired with a perfectly soft boiled egg. It was every bit as satisfying and delicious and had such a different flavor profile to the #2, which I really appreciated. It is not in the best neighborhood and the hours are painfully tight, especially if you want to avoid a long wait, but the end product is absolutely worth it, in my opinion. And at $6 to $7 per sandwich, the value is still a good value, even if it is a far cry from the $4-6 range that it seemed to hover in for a long time.

The only thing that made the sandwich edible was the bread itself. It was fresh light and airy as I remember it to be. I hope they will focus and maintain quality in the future. I've had their Spicy Hog, steak with mushroom, a few Cubans, but the one that I always come back to is "The Balls" sandwich. First off, this sandwich is massive, so be sure that you come here on an empty stomach. These beef meatballs are seasoned to perfection and bursting with flavor. The balls are covered in their red sauce with provolone and Grana Padano, which gives it that nutty and salty flavor that pairs extremely well with the meatballs and baguette. All the juices and cheese just get soaked up to perfection. The baguette bread they use is supplied by La Farine, which is just a few meters away from each other. Just putting out there that La Farine is hands down one of the best bakeries in Oakland, so it makes sense that this sandwich would be so dang good. I'll be honest that I'm not a big fan of the chips or those chips in general and could be fine with just the sandwich. If you are going to have any sandwich to eat here first, I would highly recommend you try "The Balls" because I promise you will not be disappointed. This is the first place in the world that had me eating rye. I hate rye bread, and was worried because there are no substitutions, but the sandwiches here were so good and the bread didn't taste like the traditional prison food hard rye bread. You changed me Krispy Joe's, and had me eating stuff I never would have. Also, drinking stuff I never would have. I bought their chai and lemonade, both were 5 stars, and they offered me their pickle juice electrolyte drink to try. I was skeptical at first, but again they made me a believer. I hate pickle juice and pickle flavored anything in general. Yet, they converted me once again when they offered me a sample of their pickle-aid. It tasted like a mild tasting plain Gatorade. If I were still training for a marathon, I would totally buy this! Back to their amazing sandwiches. They are made with such care, dusting every sandwich that's made to order with their secret spices while toasting the meat and bread. The slaw was fresh and herbaceous. Again, made with care and craftsmanship. I am rooting for this business to expand and take over Ike's Sandwiches. I believe in you Krispy Joe's, you have my vote!

This is a tiny little shop that seems to do a tremendous amount of business. Yesterday, we were in the area at 11:30, before the lunch rush officially begins. We parked practically in front at the curb and walked to the front door. Inside were about 10 customers, some waiting to pay, some watching their sandwiches being made and others waiting to order. We weren't quite exactly where to stand so we wormed our way to what we thought might be the end of the line. Probably not necessary. There were three sandwich makers and they simply called "next" when they were ready for the next guest. The first question we were asked was how many sandwiches followed by what breads. We're both fans of Dutch Crunch so that made it easy. Then we were asked what sandwich was first. With everything? What kind of cheese? Any add-ons? Then the second sandwich, same questions. The process was impressive. Our sandwich maker knew his craft and made us two wonderful sandwiches. She ordered the Fire Roasted Steak with everything. I ordered the Lucca's Ultimate Club without the Hot Pepper Sauce (mistake!). We got back to our van and the hot Steak smelled so good, we split it right then and completely devoured it! The Hot Pepper Sauce was not super spicy and the entire sandwich was huge and delicious. This morning, we split the Lucca's Ultimate. We each managed to put away about 1/2 of our 1/2 and then had to put them away. Not to worry, we finished them at dinner. I think because I had omitted the Hot Pepper Sauce, this sandwich wasn't quite as moist. I would have liked more lettuce, tomato and possibly some avocado. That's a note to myself for next time. Yes, there will be a next time. Service was great. Food was great. I wouldn't want the business to change anything. A small shop with huge demand that makes great food is worth the wait. Some might say that enlarging the business would increase speed and capacity but I say don't mess with a great thing!
