This was my first time at Cafe Zocalo's and I'm glad we stopped to look at the menu today. We had several other patrons tell us how wonderful their food was and how generous their portions are (especially for the price), and how tasty their desserts were (we didn't sample these today, but we saw several in a display case inside and they looked amazing). There are booth and table seating inside (some booths could potentially hold 6 people), and a few tables outside. You can order and pay at a counter (and then sit because they bring it to you or take to go) or sit inside and order at your table. I got two individual tacos (the carne asada and the chicken - they also offer shrimp, and all three appear to be dressed the same). Served on soft warmed (not fried) yellow corn tortillas and placed on a v shaped tray that held them perfectly. The carne asada was rich and fragrant and had a texture more like pot roast than traditional grilled asada. The chicken was moist and very flavorful. Both meats were heaped generously into the tortilla, so you didn't feel cheated. Both were topped with chopped tomato and homemade guacamole (generous portion) and a sprinkle of cilantro. They came with a small side of green salsa that had a perfect amount of heat in it (I should have asked for more!). Tacos were $3.50-4 apiece. I was fine with two tacos for lunch and felt full and satisfied. My sister ordered the vegetable sandwich with a aide of potato Mac salad (around $10). The sandwich was lightly toasted (sourdough) and layered with traditional garden veggies like cucumber, tomato, lettuce and avocado with a smear of Mayo. She said it was fresh and very tasty, but the star of her plate was the potato Mac salad. It was made with a smooth creamy blend of mashed potatoes and possibly egg and Mayo, with hunks of large elbow macaroni (meat free). She said it was unusual and very good! She had the plain ice tea (free refills) and said it was refreshing and not at all bitter and it came in a big-handled tumbler. Staff were all friendly and helpful and the restaurant was clean. I only ordered dessert but it was delicious. There was one cinnamon roll in the case and it had my name on it. It had more of a glaze rather than a thick cream cheese icing but it covered it nicely and the dough was rich with a nice crisp to the edges. The price was right and it left room to try some of their other desserts in the case the next time. The employees were friendly, too. read more

First time at Blue Frog Bakery/Restaurant. Very cute/quaint and place after antique shopping. I ordered a veggie panini which come with salad, fruit or potato salad. I had a green salad which was a good size salad; my son had slice fruit. The veggies on my panini was delicious. My son had "Super Cheesy Panini" which was equally good. Their specialty drinks run $3-4, but I had can coke which they serve with a mug of ice for $1.99. They also serve a small homemade raisin cookie with your meal, which is nice/good. I did expect a heavier bread for a panini but realize it was regular sandwich white bread. I took home s apple turnover and an Orange/cranberry muffin which was soft and delicious. read more

Okay..have to caveat first that this review is stritcly for the bakery as I haven't made it here for breakfast or lunch yet, although I plan to in the very near future! I've popped by here more times than I can count for bakery items and have prolly tried almost everything they serve. My favorite is the eclairs and the cream puffs, although the red velvet mini-cake is also sinful! They also have the most wonderful chocolate croissants that melt in your mouth -- don't even want to think about how much butter is in that thing! Evenso, it's still worth the occasional indulgence! ;-) It's a smidgie hidden -- across the street from the infamous Gabbi's Mexican and a few stores up from the new Havenhurt Gastropub. How had I never been here before?!! I LOVE Old Towne Orange and find myself there quite a lot. There are quite a lot of places to eat, but I am always down to try a new place, which is why we stopped by Blue Frog Bakery. Other yelpers seemed to rate it highly, so we gave it a try! Blue Frog has a really cool set up, different than other places in this area. There are beautiful mosaic tables outside, plenty of tables on the first floor, and even more seating upstairs in a loft area. Personally, I liked the upstairs seating more because there were more options like couches and bar seating, along with other normal tables. The bathrooms are also upstairs. Loved the setup here! Although the name of this place just says "bakery", I would say it is definitely more of a deli or cafe. They have a menu that is great for breakfast and lunch, with a good choice of paninis and sandwiches. It was difficult to make a decision because there were so many great choices! But we decided on the Rueben panini and the Chicken salad sandwich. We chose the potato mac salad as our side, and it was delicious! We also ordered hot chocolates which were giant and came in these big fun cups. When our food came, we were surprised to find that it also came with a peanut butter cookie, YUM!!! The food was so great, especially for the price that we payed! It is difficult to find inexpensive food that also tastes great in this area, but Blue Frog is the perfect balance! My sandwich came on a ciabatta bread that was so incredibly soft and amazing. The potato salad was great - it has macaroni noodles and celery in it. You know in Charlie and the Cholate Factory when they opened the doors and knew they were somewhere full of "pure immagination:" involving sugar. This place comes pretty close. Fist you come to the counter and order. They have breakfasts and bakery items. Their coffee is okay, but they do have flavored creamer. Seriously the baked goods are TO DIE for. Cinnamon Rolls. Eclairs. Creme Puffs. Now, I think the pay first and eat is a little different but could come in handy for a morning brunch with a group of friends. No quibbling over the check. Also, cute ambiance. I mean we all have Starbucks days and then we have those days when we want to sit and talk with friends in a place with some personality! The staff is really nice. Now on a Saturday or Sunday morning it might be difficult to get refils. I have been here three times and this place does get pretty crowded. If you come with a bigger group (more than five) do not be afraid to venture upstairs. If it is free, there is a big table up there. They also have a small couch. 5/4/18: been coming here very seldom in the last few years due to their inconsistencies in product. but today! Today the club sandwich was perfection. First time I've had crispy bacon, not soggy ciabatta bread and moist turkey (all at the same time) on this sandwich. I've been ordering this sandwich pretty regularly since they opened a decade or more ago and I was happy with it today! Taking a coconut cake slice to go with me, too :) Update for 9/26/16: I called about 2:00pm today, an hour before closing, to ask if there was still coconut cake left (I read about its popularity!), as I needed a slice for a midday pick-me-up. I believe it was the owner that answered the phone and said he did, though it may have sounded like it was a new cake and was wrapped up for the next day's service (I'm a former pastry cook, I get it) since I didn't see a whole cake displayed when I arrived in the front case no later than 10 mins after the call. The slice was boxed and had my name on it when I got there. Very nice of them to do so! Moist and it's basically a two slice sized portion for $5. Ive been coming here since they opened, and lately the sandwiches are hit or miss. Dry turkey. Greasy meatloaf. Tuna Melt with cold tuna? The cookies and treats are thankfully always good. I was very impressed when finally trying out Blue Frog for the first time after living in Old Town Orange my whole life. I didn't know what to expect from this little French styled cafe on the outskirt of the circle. They have quite a big selection of sandwiches ranging from turkey and roast beef to even a simple healthy veggie sandwich. The Tuna Melt just seemed to have caught my attention. With the selection of Wheat, White, rye or ciabatta I went with the healthier choice of wheat. It went perfectly with the white albacore tuna, tomato, avocado, and cheese. This is one of those instances when I wished Yelp allowed half a star: this place deserves a 3.5. I attempted to get breakfast at Kimmy's Cafe down the street but there were at least 7 parties ahead so instead, I headed down to Blue Frog Bakery. I wasn't a big fan of the decor. Don't get me wrong, I love blue, but everything was reminiscent of all the design aspects that I did not like about the 90s. I would definitely recommend sitting outside or at least upstairs. When you order, you wait in line at the counter and they'll give you a number. They have an assortment of desserts and baked goods that I would love to try next time (their bread pudding looks delicious!). To order, I overheard a local suggest the Big Blue Frog Burrito. This burrito kept me full for at least 7 hours until dinner time. It was loaded with eggs, potatoes and sausage. The sausage is what you would expect at any diner, and unfortunately, it was the only thing I tasted in the whole burrito. You definitely have to eat it with the salsa, otherwise, it would be a pretty monotonous dish. I was expecting home fries or hash browns when they said potatoes or fruit but instead, it came out with thinly sliced potatoes that were fried/baked. It had a great texture, some bites had a crunch, others were soft and potatoey. This dish was a 3 in my book. My friend had the huevos rancheros and it was also just as filling. I would probably get this next time, there was a lot more things going on in the dish but if you like eggs, it just has oozy yolks all over the place. Can you imagine how the potatoes would taste in all that yolk? The service is average. One of the waitress seemed really into it, the other seemed like she had woken up on the wrong side of the bed. Mexican Hot Chocolate: NEED MORE OF IT. The difference between their regular hot coco and Mexican is their regular uses syrup as the flavoring and the Mexican is a powder; I'm not sure what powder but it was quite a taste bud pleaser. Instead of doing whip cream on top of their drink they do foam..which I love! The foam to milk ratio was the perfect amount (whoever steamed my milk bravo). Sometimes the foam can get too thick or too airy, but if clouds had a feel and taste, my hot chocolate had one beautiful cloud on top. Corned Beef Hash: the hash was good, but I wish I had more beef and less hash and potatoes. And when I was served my plate my eggs and corned beef was not as hot as I would've liked it..more on the warmer to lukewarm side. the over easy eggs were cooked perfectly though! And they serve toast with the meal, and let me tell ya..that toast was the highlight of my meal. They make their baked goods (pastries, toast) at the shop and this bread had the right amount of moisture to it with the texture of oats and grains. Okay just to be fair I am giving the restaurant 3 starts in atmosphere and service. Service could be a lot better and the lighting needs some work. Didn't get a refill in water and coffee. Also if it's your first time make sure you get in line to order and pay. The staff won't tell you until you realize nobody has even looked at you for a frustrating duration. I would rate the food and pricing to a 4 stars. Unfortunately the lady up front got my order wrong but when I bit into that burrito, I no longer cared for it was delicious. The French toast was okay but the eggs are superb. Well cooked and fluffy. The California omelet was delicious and their potatoes are good. The choice of fruit on the side is fresh but not enough. After reading the rave reviews on here I knew I had to check out this neighborhood hotspot. I have to say that generally the reviews don't lie. This bakery cafe is good. I went in for a lateish lunch, around 1:30 p.m. I beat the rush the place was fairly empty. I opted for a 1/2 a froggie cheesesteak sandwich on ciabatta with potato salad. I also tried a cup of the vegetable rice soup, an everything cookie and a cup of coffee. Ok so I gorged a bit at this place. Everything looked so good. I went alone and wish I'd brought friends so I could try what they ordered. The bread on my sandwich was delicious! It held up to the the meat and veggies quite well. Wish there was a bit more cheese but that didn't deter from the flavor. A giant portion of meat, onion and peppers, so yum. However, I wasn't a giant fan of the potato salad. The potatoes were a bit mushy for me and the chunks of pickles were too large, odd combo with mushy potatoes. The soup was outstanding! Very flavorful, big chunks of veggies, rice and chicken. Can't beat that. I was a bit disappointed with the cookie. I thought it was a bit dry. I was hoping it would be that illusive combo of chewy yet crispy. Also it was lacking in chocolate chunks. But I did get a peanut butter cookie to go and it was delicious and for $.95 it's a steal. Next time I will try a pastry. The one big downer was the staff, they weren't overly friendly, polite but not welcoming. read more

I keep forgetting to check in but since our new friend Jeremy directed us here (Thanks Jeremy!) we have been in about 5 times in the last few months! The croissants have been consistently great! I had arranged to meet a friend today in Old Towne Orange to do some shopping at another friend's store, so afterward, we walked two businesses over to have lunch at Blue Frog Dessert House and Bakery. I've been to Blue Frog on a couple of prior occasions. They have quite a number of baked goods, but they also have several items available for breakfast and lunch. I've never been there early enough for breakfast though. Two of the specials of the day were chicken pot pie and macaroni & cheese. As much as I love mac and cheese, and as much as the description of the dish from the girl at the counter sounded soooooo good, I decided that it would be better for me to have at least some protein that day, so I opted for the chicken pot pie. I added the side salad to the order. My friend ended up getting the chicken pot pie as well. One of the things that I really like about Blue Frog is that they have an upstairs loft section. The main floor has tables as well (they also have some tables out front), but the upstairs has tables as well as two sofas, and it's much cozier and quieter upstairs. There's also a restroom upstairs, which is pretty convenient. The only time the upstairs is unavailable is if there's a party and the room is rented out. And I think it would be a great place to have a private party. Good food, nice ambience, a bit more secluded from the rest of the restaurant, and a restroom handy nearby. The only thing would be that other patrons would have to walk through your party space to get to the restroom, but that just means they'd be jealous that they weren't invited to your fun and fabulous party. Luckily, the room wasn't reserved this afternoon, though I was disappointed that the sofa area was already occupied, so we opted for a small table overlooking the restaurant. You put your order in at the counter, and then all of your food is brought to you. The side salad ended up being much larger than I had expected, so my friend and I decided to share it. It was a nicely done, very simple salad. Then they brought our chicken pot pies, and those looked really good. There was one piece of puff pastry on the dish and then the chicken pot pie filling was poured on top, with another piece of puff pastry sitting on top. The filling was nicely flavored and a good consistency, and you got the puff pastry with the pot pie filling covering it, but you could also just have the puff pastry by itself because of the extra piece on top. It was quite delicious. Someone came up to check on us a couple of times as well as to clear our finished dishes away. We had a good time enjoying our lunch and good conversation. It's really hard to go to Blue Frog and not have some kind of baked goodie. For various reasons, I've been on a red velvet cupcake kick over the past couple of months, so when I saw that they had red velvet cupcakes, I couldn't resist. They had a lemon bar as well, which I usually find tempting, but I'll have to save that for another time. I got one of the red velvet cupcakes to go. It had a lot of frosting on top then crumbled cupcake bits sprinkled on top. I ate the cupcake at home later, and it was quite tasty. I'm not generally a fan of frosting, and while it looked cute, there was entirely too much frosting for my taste. I think I had just a bit to taste and then left the rest of it. I think I tasted a little bit of cherry filling (with cherry bits) right at the top of the cupcake. Overall, it was pretty yummy. I've enjoyed each of the meals I've had at Blue Frog, as well as their varied desserts. I've brought a couple friends to the place, and they've seemed to enjoy it as well. The service has always been pleasant, though this time, both people we dealt with were particularly friendly, so that was really nice. Timed parking is available either on the street or in nearby city lots. The only time I get to go to Blue Frog is certain occasions when I'm visiting the friend's shop, but I always look forward to each visit.
