We decided to have dinner on a Friday night for my girlfriend's birthday. Having read several good reviews, we were looking forward to having a good Italian dinner at a non-chain restaurant in Columbus. I am a well-traveled foodie and enjoy supporting local restaurants. We made reservations for 5 pm which is the time they open for dinner; upon arriving, the restaurant was empty except for two tables, yet the hostess sat us in back by the restrooms and kitchen which was unusual since the restaurant was not occupied. We ignored this and started to observe the environment and look at the menu which looked to have a good selection of entrees. The service started out fine, our drinks came out quickly as did the calamari appetizer, but after placing dinner order, we began noticing an argument in the kitchen during which a server and then the manager/owner(?) came out continuing the argument, then our server came out apologizing that the garlic bread was going take awhile because the oven was not warm enough. After 25 minutes (mind you, the restaurant was not at all full) our dinner was served. My girlfriend had the eggplant parmigiana and I had the penne rosa. The eggplant varied in temperature seemingly between cold and hot (!), but had a good flavor, there was no side dish served. My rosa was pretty good, a nice mix of sauteed ham and shrimp in a vodka sauce. Overall the food was not bad, but the ambiance (inexpensive furnishings, lattice and faux brick walls) was drab and the atmosphere was not conducive to a nice dining experience. Not sure if they were having an off day, but it dampened the birthday mood. We do not anticipate returning and have honestly had better experiences at the Carrabbas up the street. read more

I've always loved their food but I said in my last review I just wish they had a more romantic ambience; however, after this last time I am compelled to change my rating to 5 stars. I had family come in for my graduation and I called to make reservations which ended up being 30 minutes before they closed. They were so nice and friendly even though they ended up having to stay late. I didn't realize I would be that late (graduation ran long) but anyways, I just really appreciate the top notch service. I even apologized and they told me it was ok they were just glad to serve us. They never rushed us either. Sorry you had to work late guys!! PS. Food was amazing as usual! read more

Me and my wife ordered dishes that we've gotten before that have been delicious to us before at other restaurants. We ordered the calamari and it came out burnt to a crisp and rubbery.We were also given side salads with house dressing and the dressing tasted like industrial glue. I ordered the Francese Veal Pasta and it was tough as a two dollar steak. My wife ordered the Chicken Parmesan and she says it was very delicious, but the noodles were under-seasoned and subpar. The waitress-was very good, just left us as soon as another party came in and she knew them. This was our first date out in a while and this place disappointed us. They have really god authentic Italian dishes for a reasonable price. Between three of us we had eggplant parm, chicken parm and a vegetarian pasta dish which is the house special. I added chicken it was really good. Everything was fresh and the portions are HUGE. I would go back. read more

Why aren't more people here? We had great service and the food was good. The kids portions are appropriate. I had the carbonara sauce on angel hair pasta. More food than I could eat so I took some home. One of my children had the spaghetti and meatballs--the meatballs were pretty tasty and homemade. I am not sure if anyone has mentioned this but they have a very good tiramisu. It is homemade and very light. Tiramisu should be served fresh and theirs was very fresh. We ordered one to share and I wish we had ordered another one.I am not from the Columbus area and live in a very large metropolitan area. The food at Cafe Amici is good and fresh. We decided to give this place a try. I'm a huge foodie and when I found out that it was an Italian restaurant owned by Australians I expected mediocre food at best. Boy, were we surprised. Ordered Ravioli as an appetizer. It was fresh, homemade, phenomenal!!! Veal Piccata was absolutely delicious and the Tiramisu was to die for. Hands down the best meal I've eaten since moving here from New Orleans. It was also quite inexpensive. I can't wait to go back. We found a new "date night" restaurant. read more

Ever since the old chef left, or at least that is what we have heard, they removed puttanesca from the menu, have lost their salt shaker and just the overall food quality has gone down completely. Ownership seems to leave the waitstaff to explain food issues when he is in the building and could do so himself and we have been disappointed after returning several times, since at one point it was our favorite Italian restaurant. I go here much more often that I check in. In the hometown, this is leaps & bounds my fave Italian go to place. Recommend --warm salad, pollo Romano or piccata, spaghetti carbonara & Grilled vegetables as a side. While the dishes may Americanized for someone of Italian descent, they are very flavorful & saucy. I am a carbonara aficionado from my first taste in Rome in '80's---this is creamier for sure, but tasty & flavorful none the less. Pasts is always al dente. Service great. Try it! read more

This was not a good dining experience. We eat out a lot and like to try new places and eat good food. The decor could use a face lift .My husband had the shrimp that made him literally sick. He said tasted like it was bad.It was so bad that he couldn't finish his meal. I had the steak Marsala and it was just ok. My husband got the bad end of the stick that night, I mean he gagged!! Ok, so first time at this place. We sit at the bar while we are waiting for a table. Just so happens there is no bartender. No one says anything to us. So we just sat there like two weirdos. we got a table 20 minutes later. And no shit it took 1 hour to get our food. The inside is very small, there wasn't that many people in there. But yes one hour to get our food. So the waitress says dessert is on the house since we waited so long. Figured that was nice. Till she shows up with the bill and charges me for it. The food sucked. I got the frutti di Marne, or something like that. And it's was sucked. The mussels that came with the dish never open. Which tells me they are under cooked or dead before they were cooked. Now I hope the rest of the dish was cooked. But whatever. I pretty much ate a $90 turd. No way in hell will I ever go back to this shithole. It was complete chaos, one waiter walked by snatched out wine glasses and never even asked if we would like another glass. So we sat there waiting for our waiter to show up so I could get another drink since our food wasn't coming anytime soon. Don't waste your money here. read more

Everything about this place is excellent (except as mentioned in other reviews that the atmosphere is mediocre). I had the pasta Primavera. I was given a choice of sauce, I chose the garlic cream, rich and delicious. The veggies were fresh and perfectly cooked. I also enjoyed a glass of their house cab. It was surprisingly good. Caffe Amici offers the best Italian food in Columbus! The food is fresh and exquisite,y delicious. They have healthy options and don't overdo it on the sauce and carbs the way some Italian places tend to - we left feeling full but not on the verge of a food-induced coma, which is a very good thing. The bread and oil are fantastic, as are the entrees and choices available. The decor is a bit dated, but the restaurant is clean and cozy, and our server was friendly and welcoming. THE BEST ITALIAN IN COLUMBUS! I cannot say anything bad about this restaurant. Having lived many places (including Europe) we have been able to try Italian food from authentic to terrible. The food at Caffe Amici is about as close to authentic that we have found since leaving Europe. We have tried every app on the menu, and they are all wonderful. The calamari is our favorite. We have also had many of the main dishes over the years. My favorites are the Rosa and Tortellini alla panna. The kids' options are not the usual junk that you find other places. They get the same quality just a smaller portion. They also have great desserts. Finally, the service has always been outstanding. I couldn't ask for nicer people. My experience was fantastic. Had the Chicken Piccata, side salad with vinaigrette, and asparagus. Everything was fantastic. Great flavor but not overwhelming lemon flavor. Went with a group and we were all impressed with our meals. I enjoyed the pesto linguine with excellent blackened shrimp. The eggplant and chicken parm were table favorites. If I could give this place ZERO STARS I would! There are not enough negative adjectives to describe this disgusting, poor excuse for an Italian restaurant. I was assured by our waiter that orders were cooked to order. I got the baked spaghetti (idiot proof I thought) My husband got chicken and noodles (I forget the exact name) We waited over an hour to the sounds of loud banging in the kitchen. Our food came out lukewarm and tasted fresh out of a can and had the texture resembled something thawed and reheated in the microwave. Husband's chicken (ordered extra chicken) were obviously 1 processed frozen patty cut in half!!! Lean cuisine could be considered 5 stars compared to this "food" I ate two bites and called our waiter over to send it back (something that I NEVER do) they called the manager over to taste it and were not the most polite people to say the least. RUDE! Our forks were dirty and the food and service was just plain horrible. I cannot for the life of me figure out how this place has 4 stars on yelp?!?! Steer clear of this place! It is an insult to anyone who's had authentic Italian food. Ha! "Authentic".. This place could be sued for false advertising! Yuck! This restaurant may have seen better days. Service was horrendous. Lobster bisque had not a milligram of lobster in it and tasted like a very creamy cream of tomato soup. The mussels took about 30 minutes (as did the bisque) - and there were 10 on the plate -- one wasn't even open. Awful. I have to say though .... this has not been my normal experience. Good food and good service . Decor could use an upgrade but was very clean. Had special of the day Red Snapper in parchment paper with fried polenta. Very tasty, small portion of fish but very good . My wife ordered lasagna, very large portion, it would have fed both of us. Prices not outrageous. Will go again next time in the area. read more
