We had a great dinner at Caffe Gelato on E. Main St. It was a pleasant surprise to find such a delightful restaurant in the middle of a bustling "college town". The atmosphere is cozy and quiet, and nicely staffed. The extensive wine list and wide variety of mixed cocktails added to the nice choices on the menu. Our waiter was prompt and friendly and shared his knowledge of the wines available at the restaurant. We really enjoyed our entrees of Grilled Scallops and Cappellini in a "rosa sauce" topped with lump crabmeat and sauté jumbo shrimp. We topped off our delightful dinner with 2 of the many Gelato selections available for dessert. We juste moved to Newark, and so far, this is the BEST restaurant we have found in the city limits. read more

Our waiter was distracted and inattentive, food was mediocre and the final bill was inexplicably deceptive. I was there early which corresponded to Happy Hour. Apparently appetizers and small plates are half off during happy hour. I received a bill in the $50. neighborhood. I tried to use a $20. off coupon which comes monthly in the mail. I was told that because it was happy hour and some of the items were half off it would be less expensive not to use $20. off coupon. I agreed and paid a bill in $30 range. My question to Caffe Gelato is this, "Why didn't my first bill reflect the happy hour discount originally? Why did I have to put out a coupon to get the happy hour discount. This is reminiscent of the Wednesday buy one get one free promotion. You would get a bill for total amount until you asked about buy one get one. It no longer matters because I will not be going back to Caffe Gelato. There are too many restaurants where hospitality and consideration are offered by waitstaff and food is far superior than what is mediocre and way overpriced at Caffe Gelato. read more

An absolute nightmare to order from - don't do it. Don't be fooled by the prices. I had 2 separate events that I ordered catering from and both were a disaster. First was my daughters baptism - my order came late and my guests were waiting with nothing. Gave them another chance on Easter Sunday. Email communication was extremely poor with Emily. Kept following up to see if my order was received and nothing. Finally called in and they did not have my order and tried to tell me it was too late. The girl I spoke to kindly let us order from a very limited menu of 3 entrees with a discount, which was nice, but completely changed our entire Easter lunch with 8 people. They offered us a generous discount, which I appreciate, but I honestly would have rather just received better service. Easter Sunday; my order was quoted for 11-11:30 which was perfect for our 12PM lunch invitation to our guests. I knew it was too good to be true when 12PM rolled around and still nothing. Called in and was told the food isn't arriving for another hour. 2 hours after the quoted time. And once again, our guests waiting around for an hour with nothing. Embarrassing. Highly recommend never ordering catering from here. Prices are low but I guess you get what you pay for. Seems like the place is being run by college students. Chaotic, poor customer service, lack or communication, AND follow up (no one called me either times to let me know our deliveries would be severely late). I am absolutely livid at this "restaurant". Yesterday 12 of me and my friends made a reservation for 3pm. We were not sat until 4pm. We proceed to sit in the back room where we are told by the manager of the bar that they are not doing bottomless mimosas anymore, that ends at 4. This is obviously infuriating because our reservation was for 3pm. He then went on to suggest that we should basically just leave, we were not served and left this joke of an establishment after 15 minutes. This restaurant does NOT honor their Groupon. Around 2 weeks ago, I called to place an order for takeout, and they said that business is slow, so they won't be honoring them. If this restaurant doesn't want to honor coupons, then they should NOT be selling them on Groupon. I have also dined in at this establishment twice, prior to the above incident. Both times, the drinks were overpriced and weak. Also, both times, the water was very snarky and said that if you have a Groupon, you can not have any other "Specials" that are on the menu. Thank you for making our Mothers' Day event spectacular! The staff went out of their way to ensure everyone was enjoying their meal. The food was make perfectly, and I enjoy being able to take home a 'bite' for the next day. We all saved room for the amazing desserts, which we coupled with the fresh, delicious gelato. Went here because my friends recommended it for brunch & bottomless mimosas.. I truly wish I hadn't. Their food was not good and overpriced, the waitress was not very accommodating and the manager was so beyond rude, they cut us off after an hour of being there even though our reservation was supposed to be for two hours, and finally, they did not follow through with their "promised" half off prices for UD students. Worse gelato ever had! Wonder why this place is called Caffe Gelato if they can't even do gelato right. Also wonder why I paid for this. It's sooooo overly sweet, not smooth at all, I couldn't taste any flavour besides sugar. It also tastes so old and not fresh at all, nasty. The 1 Star is for the terrible service I received with online delivery. My boyfriend and I were looking forward to have a nice dinner at home, and were excited that the restaurant offered delivery. I placed the order at 7:30pm.. after waiting way too long thinking they were busy, I called around 9:15pm and spoke to Casey at the front desk who had "no idea what happened". He stated that the food was made and didn't know what happened after that! The food was never given to the driver. I got a refund and said that my food will be made within 10 minutes and get it to the driver as soon as possible. I called back at 9:40pm to ask if the food was given to the driver, and NOBODY answered the phone! I called up until closing time without an answer. It's now 10:21pm, no food, and didn't have dinner. Went here for Sunday Brunch, totally didn't realize it was family weekend for UD though! Other than it being packed with families and a shorter menu of the more popular items, the food was still amazing, the service was fast and we thoroughly enjoyed our brunch! The gelato at the end of our meals is always such a unique but awesome way to end the meals, and is such a good way to get people to try the gelato! Cafe Gelato is a find and I've been here many times. You'd never expect a Wine Spectator awarding winning restaurant on a college Main Street. Caffe Gelato has earned this designation for years. Excellent wine selection at all price points with gentle markups. The pastas are all made in-house. My favorite is their lump crab and shrimp capellini served in their fantastic rosa sauce. Gnocchi here light, favorable pillows as they should be. Unlike at other places Salads here are full of the described toppings . Their veal chops are among the best I've ever tasted and they prepare amazing lamb. The Gelato is perfect. I learned that the owner apprenticed as a gelato maker in Italy. My boyfriend and I are staying at a nearby bed and breakfast and thankfully we were recommended this restaurant! The atmosphere was so cute and they sat us in a booth where we sat next to eachother which was very intimate. They had a special on Wednesday BOGO special entrees. I got the seared tuna and my boyfriend got a prosciutto wrapped filet minion. Both were outstanding. We also got the lobster gnocchi as an appetizer which was so fresh and delicious. Their wine selection was very impressive and the staff was very good with helping chose them and even offered samples when I couldn't decide. The pasta was mediocre at best, the pancetta roasted Brussel sprouts contained no pancetta (I would absolutely serve them to my vegetarian sis-in-law) and the truffled chips were straight out of a bag (I think there was supposed to be dip?). My family and I spent a beautiful night at Caffe Gelato! It really couldn't have been any more perfect! We went on a Thursday when they closed Main Street and also hosted a band Spokey Speaky! We sat outside and they had such a great turn out! The staff was assertive and the food wAs absolutely 5 Star. We wanted seafood and first took a look at the menu before deciding. We left but came back after not finding much else in the neighborhood with the atmosphere or menu choice. Wait staff were attentive to our needs but it wasn't crowded for a Saturday night. There was a very loud party in the other room but luckily we were seated far away. The Tutti di Mare was very tasty and the scallops were done to perfection. This was plenty of food for two people to share, including bread and olive oil. Prices and portions were fair in today's market. Don't miss the White Sangria, sold by the carafe. It was filled with fruit pieces and so refreshing for a warm summer evening. I seemed to noticed that while the waitstaff is great, very accommodating and polite, it's hard to not see what happening when they leave our table. The other day my husband and I came into Caffe Gelato and immediately heard (what we can only think is the manager) yelling at a few girls because they didn't do something correctly and after asking for help he denied it, and then told another to move a table while they were actively bringing food to someone. My son used to work here ages ago when he attended the university and said the same thing about the owner. Although you as the customer are treated with the respect and kindness you deserve it seems as though the wait staff isn't given this luxury. A lot of the younger staff members (most likely in college) seem to be very nervous and uneasy when their superiors are near which leads me to think about if this is a healthy environment or not for students (or anyone for that matter) to be working. I always want to like this place. The owner is a UD graduate, and I respect what he has built in the past twenty or so years. Unfortunately, I am disappointed almost every time I go. Many years ago, I ordered the short rib special, which is one of my favorite, The ribs were almost all fat, and largely inedible. I asked for the owner, who informed me that ribs were always fatty and declined to do anything (I was just asking for a replacement, not a refund). Eight years later, I felt it was time to give caffe gelato another chance. We ordered the cheese plate, along with a pasta dish for my wife and a pizza for me. The cheese plate appetizer took 35 minutes to arrive. No silverware. No plates. No napkins. No apology. The amount of cheese was considerable, and very good, as were the apples, almonds, and the other elements, Eighty minutes in, we still haven't received our food. Our waitperson wasn't seen for 30 minutes, and many guests who arrived after us were getting their food. The waitperson blew by me, said it was on the way, and left before I could say anything. When it finally arrived, the pasta and pizza were excellent. The waitstaff was clearly overwhelmed. The situation smelled of too many people and too few staff. Management was never Involved. Little to no communication. They took off $20, but we never saw a manager. Waitperson never mentioned it either, or apologized for the long delay. i simply can't hit this place when it is running on all cylinders. Great food, but negligent and indifferent service. I doubt it is the waitstaff: management needs to get more involved to get them where they need to be. read more

Went with a party of about 30 to a company dinner party at Caffe Gelato. Of course we had a reservation so you'd think the staff would be prepared since they knew we were coming but they were not! The service was horribly slow and unorganized. It took half an hour of waiting around before the whole party was seated because they did not have the tables ready. 30 people standing around at the entrance really ruined the atmosphere for other diners. The owner should know better than to not leave empty tables in anticipation of a large party. I think the dinner was suppose to be a 7 course meal but my table got skipped one course because the waiters forgot. Some tables got a course while others were skipped. Out of the 7 courses, the only course that we had a choice in was the entree. It took about an hour before the waiter got around to taking orders for the entree from my table and even then he forgot to mention a selection from the 4 available entrees. After another hour of waiting, the entrees finally started to come out. I would think the entrees would come out faster since that was the ONLY thing out of the 7 courses that they actually had to cook. Furthermore, since we had only 4 entree choices, the kitchen should've already known to start preparing for some of them. Perhaps the kitchen was understaffed but they knew before hand a large party was coming! So after 1 hour of waiting for the food to come out and being hungry (since we wharfed down the other courses in 20 minutes), I was severely disappointed when my main course finally came out. For my entree, I got a pistachio topped chicken breast of some sort. The pistachios were a nice touch but the chicken was very bland and dry. It was on top of some kind of cream sauce but that added barely any flavor to the chicken. There was a bland side of cous cous and veggies. I did not pay for this dinner party but I'd imagine if you were to order any entree on the menu, it would cost around $20 to $30. For that kind of price, I'd expect better tasting chicken and better sides! Someone at the table got salmon with sweet potatoes and I thought that was descent but the cut of fish was way too small for the price (probably 6 oz). Another thing I thought was silly was out of the 7 courses, 1 course is a drop and I mean a DROP (the amount that would fit in a sample cup) of lemon gelato to cleanse your palate before the entree. That should not be counted as a course because there was barely any food! The other courses were bread with olive oil, salad, fried calimari, meat and cheese platter (which my table didn't even get), and a tiny ramekin of hazelnut gelato for dessert. The hazelnut gelato was good but that was the only thing that stood out of the 7 course meal. Also, I want to mention that our dinner party took up half the restaurant worth of tables. We were divided down the middle by a divider from other diners and on the right size, there was only ONE single-occupant restroom. Since we were separated by the divider, I do not know if there was another restroom on the other side. Regardless, 1 bathroom for more than 30 people is silly. At one point, there was a queue of 3 people waiting for the restroom. In short, do not bring big parties to caffe gelato. Do not go for their 7 course meal since it won't really be 7 courses. The food is only so-so for what you pay. The restaurant tends to overbook itself so on busy nights prepare for bad service. read more

Very overpriced. Clearly didn't put much effort into the food. The 9 dollar salted caramel ice cream was just 3 scoops of vanilla with a tiny drizzle of caramel on top. Pizza was ok. Had dessert and coffee with friends here tonight. Everything was delicious, but I think the service might have been even better than the tasty sweets. My wife smelled cookies wafting out of the kitchen and inquired about them. 30 seconds later one of the servers delivered four piping hot cookies to our table, free of charge.
