A couple of days a week I work from home and I enjoy coming to Caffe La Scala one those days. It has plenty of natural light, music (just loud enough for it not to be distracting), and OMG THEY HAVE PLUGS! It seems like it is harder and harder to find coffee shops that allow you to work and charge your computer if needed so this is definitely a plus. As for food, they have a varied menu with soups, salads, sandwiches, paninis and pizzas. I haven't tried their food yet but it looks good. The downside of this place is that they give you WiFi voucher that is only valid for 2-hours, so if you are planning to cram for finals or need a steady long work session this might not be the place for you. read more

Stopped in in a rainy afternoon while driving through walnut creek. The atmosphere was perfect for taking a break from a long road trip, and everything we ordered was excellent. Ended up here because it was late at night, I was craving dessert, and according to both Google and Yelp this was one of the few options that were open late. First impression: Such a cute cafe! It has a vintage vibe, and I was definitely digging it. The decorations on the walls and pillars are super interesting to look at, and they help to give the whole establishment such a neat feel. I ordered a Hot Chocolate and a White Chocolate Raspberry Cheesecake. - Hot Chocolate: Absolutely delicious! It smelled exactly a warm brownie, and tasted way better than any hot chocolate I've gotten at Starbucks. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it came in a large mug, which helped to justify the $3.50 price tag. It was served with a generous serving of whipped cream on top. Usually I don't like whipped cream on my drinks, but it was tasty! I'll definitely order this again. - White Chocolate Raspberry Cheesecake: So yummy! It seemed a bit small for something that costs $5.25, but it tasted SO good! I was also pretty full when I finished eating it, although that could've been due to the giant mug of hot chocolate that I drank along with it. Either way, it was a good portion size. A bit pricey, but definitely worth it for the flavor. I'll definitely be ordering this again as well. When you're finished eating / drinking you just leave your cups and plates on the table for the barista to clean up. I always feel weird about doing this because I don't like leaving behind a mess that causes more work for the barista, but there's no trashcans or places to return the cups / plates to, otherwise. There's plenty of seating inside, which is nice. There's also a few tables outside, if that's more along your preference. The chairs inside looked deceptively small and uncomfortable at first glance, but turned out to be quite comfortable to sit in. I especially liked how the chair curved to support my back. There was mellow music playing in the background but it wasn't too loud, which was nice considering how obnoxiously loud music in restaurants is one of my pet peeves. There were a lot of people here who were working on their laptops, so I guess this is a place people frequent to get some work done. I loved the ambiance, and I can definitely see myself studying here if I wanted a break from my usual study spots. This cafe is also open until midnight every night, which is convenient seeing as how places such as Starbucks typically close around 8pm. One thing to note: The street parking outside is metered, so I already know if I were to come back at more popular daytime hours then 1) it would be harder to find parking, and 2) I'd have to run out and feed the meter every couple of hours. Perhaps there's better places to park that I'm just not aware of yet? In summary this cafe is a bit on the pricier side, but the delicious taste of the food / drinks, ambiance, and comfortable chairs definitely make up for it. La Scala is a perfect place to study or catch up with friends. I have been coming here for years and I love the many drink options. There are non-alcoholic standards like coffee, hot chocolate, lemonade, orange juice, and tea, but also quite a few alcoholic drinks too. I love the baked goods (especially the tiramisu) and I've enjoyed their pizza and the veggie sandwich too. There aren't many outlets, except on the perimeter, but there are plenty of seats inside and in the plaza next door. I really appreciate that they use reusable utensils, plates, and cups here too. A purchase will get you a 2 hour wi-fi code if you need it. read more

But Walnut Creek has a solution to this problem: CAFFE LA SCALA! They're open fairly late (midnight) AND they serve classy alcohol; there's nothing quite like a wine-n-whine sesh with your best friends, amirite?! Everyone here talks about the tiramisu, which is good in its own right, don't get me wrong. It's creamy and fatty and rum-y and everything you could want in a slice of cake. But LISTEN TO ME: GET THE LEMON BARS. THEY'RE AMAZING. THEY'RE BEAUTIFUL. And most importantly, they're never goddamn there so when I see them, you BEST BELIEVE I'm shelling out the $3 for one of those bad boys. They're so unassuming, sitting there next to the monstrous tiramisu. It's just a LEMON BAR, you say with a not-so-subtle eye-roll, how good can it BE? The answer is so, so good. Just trust me on this one (or, you know, don't, that just leaves more for me). They "have wifi" here and outlets abound, but it's often so spotty that I want to throw my laptop out one of their many ceiling-to-floor windows. We thought we were coming in for a light lunch and delicious desserts, but it ended up being the other way around...delicious lunch, so-so on the desserts. Tables were plenty but too tiny inside for our party of 4, so we opted to dine on the sidewalk outside. Eats: -prosciutto, arugula, fontina, pepperoncini panino -brie & apple panino -margarita pizza -lasagna Sweets: -tiramisu -berry custard tart -lemon bars (4) Lunch was surprisingly DEE-LICIOUS. The panini was large with great, crusty rustic French bread and was served with a lightly dressed green salad. The margarita pizza was freshly made, nice thin crust, good caramelization on the tomatoes from the hot oven. My friend said the lasagna was good, although I didn't taste. Desserts, however, were disappointing!! I read raves about the tiramisu and I'm sorry, it was just okay. Almost of the lady fingers...especially at the top, weren't sufficiently soaked in espresso/rum and were dry and intact. The mascarpone cream was thick, but also severely lacking flavor. Boo. The berry custard tart was better - shortbread crust, custard filling, tart fresh berries on top - that was good. Surprisingly, the lemon bars...which were lackluster in presentation on the counter (cut in simple squares on a plate and wrapped with plastic wrap) were the best! So good, in fact, that we went back in 3 times to buy 3 more. Since they're near downtown, parking is sort of annoying, since WC now keeps their meters running on Sunday's and the garage is a bit far. We were driving home from Concord and needed a pick-me-up. I refuse to spend a dime at the Evil Mermaid, so we searched Yelp for a real coffee shop. Mind you, I know very little about Walnut Creek. I played a baseball tournament here when I was a young buck and that's about the only time I've been. Fast forward 23 years and trip #2 was not very good. We walk through the doors and stand in line. About 2 minutes later a lady sounds off with "Are you waiting in line?" That one sentence was laced with attitude and the facial expression on her mug was dreadful. Happy Holidays to you too hun. Nah, I'm not waiting in line. I just make it a point to stand in the exact area where a line forms for absolutely no reason at all. We order two small coffees and the Todd behind the counter gets snooty when I ask for the cream. Brotha, check it out. Some people enjoy half n half with their coffee. It's been that way for years, it's like that from Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire all the way down to Cornado Caly foo. If you can't hang with customers, maybe this isn't the gig for you. Clearly Walnut Creek isn't for me. Few things bug me more than unwarranted negative energy and bat attitudes. Those two were shining brighter than the Christmas lights at the Griswold household. We decided to order our drinks while we waited. I ordered an almond milk latte. It was the worst latte ever. The milk had curdled and it was just gross. I've had hundreds of almond milk lattes and know that it tricky to prepare them. The barista does not have the skills. I couldn't get myself to drink it and decided I'd say something. He, the barista, was rude and condescending. His attitude with customers was very unpleasant. You can't pay me to return to this place. This is a great place to study due to the late hours. The walls are lined with outlets, though those tables are very popular. I was a regular for a short spurt of time and came here ~10 times over a 2-month period (I know, this review says I have only checked in 7 times - that's only when I remember to check in). Let's get to the issue though: Customer service is LACKING. The employees don't seem to be very happy on the job or maybe they're just snooty and hate people in general, it's hard to tell. Although I like the ambiance of the place I feel as if I'm approaching a group of judgmental females when I walk up to order coffee - that's not a good feeling. Positive: - The coffee is decent - The tiramisu seems to be ordered all the time. - I like that the owner is at the coffee shop almost every night to make sure the operation is running smoothly. The owner also cleans tables instead of making the baristas do all of the work when he is present. Negative: - This place periodically resets their internet without notifying customers. - They charge extra for soy milk, that's a bit old school. - They don't seem to be very customer service oriented. One lady ordered a salad and asked for dressing on the side, but when her salad arrived it was mixed in. Whether you like to study caffeinated or drunk, Caffe La Scala is the perfect place to get down and productive! So many laptops here! You'll almost feel weird for not bringing yours. The space is actually pretty decent for a coffee shop and there is always a place to sit, granted you may have to walk through a maze of tables to get to your destination. Despite the bajillion outlets that line the window walls of the cafe, there are probably about 8 available tables for laptop users. There's also only one large table at the corner that's always hogged up by that one very greedy, self-important person. My go-to here is their cappuccino and though I'm no coffee connoisseur, I absolutely love it. The atmosphere is very relaxed, the music is perfect and unobtrusive, and baristas are very quick at pumping out your caffeinated goodness. I wouldn't exactly come here for the food though. I can't say much for the hot stuff but the displayed pastries are something I don't enjoy both price and taste-wise. Unfortunately you can't bring in your own edibles, which I found out the hard way by being told to put away mine. Although expected, I didn't see any apparent sign that said you couldn't! Also, there's no free parking. Maybe late at night, but if you like to work those brain muscles during the day, there's the parking garage on Locust that's actually incredibly cheap. Overall, I am in LOVE with this place. It's charming, has caffeine (...and alcohol), LOADS of outlets and free wifi. Definitely my number one study spot in the area! read more

The tiramisu is a bit expensive at $5 for a square piece but it was delicious; it's definitely worth the money. La Scala is known for being a local hotspot amongst young adults. People are trendy and it's an awesome cafe to see and be seen. It is exactly what you would want in a social cafe. While many customers are students who spend their time studying at the cafe, you will also see a few customers come in to meet new people who live in the area. Pastries - Awesome! Espresso beverages - Poor The first thing I noticed when I walked in was a very light, too fast extraction with bubbles visible in the stream of espresso (boiler set too hot?) being extracted into metal shot vessels. I knew it was going to be tragic but I was there to taste the coffee to see what it was like, so I proceeded to order a small latte. The espresso was dosed and tamped without an even distribution first. There was no pressure to the way it was tamped, MAYBE a light pat. When my shot was extracting, I noticed they have raised groups on their La Marzocco, and could easily fit a 16oz cup under the groups but still chose to brew into metal shot vessels anyway. (Metal is bad, the espresso oxidizes and changes the flavor and tastes horrible and KILLS the crema). I watched the shot, counting in my head, and it was less than 10 seconds. Yikes. I watched the milk being steamed and heard that dreaded sound of gurgling... no microfoam for my latte. She poured the milk over the espresso in front of me on the counter and seemed to not even notice or care that my latte looked like foamy swamp water... One taste and I knew there was no saving this coffee even with sugar. The shot was so bitter. The milk was too bubbly. It was a $4 lesson in never buying coffee here again. The two little mini cookie pastry things I ordered were FABULOUS. I will come back for the food. If you want to take a gamble with your coffee - La Scala is your casino. If not, just head down to Pacific Bay - the barista there serves up PERFECT drinks, every time, no exceptions. And if he makes a poor drink accidentally you'd never know because he would NEVER serve it. He'd make it over. That's how it SHOULD be! La Scala, get your baristas trained! I ordered the Roasted Vegetable Sandwich and it was pretty freaking awesome. The vegetables were hearty and fresh, the bread was soft yet firm and the sandwich came with a side of pasta salad. The sandwich was neither too big nor too small, it was just perfect. The salad was glistening with what I'm assuming is olive oil, which is a good thing IMO. The staff is very nice, and the place itself is pretty big. There is a display case of delicious looking sweets at the counter; among them were some amazing cannolis. This was the go-to-see-and-be-seen-hip-spot when I was in high school. Especially for the drama and improv crowd. (I was not in the drama and improv crowd. I was a groupie.) It took me a while to return but I have been back as an adult a few times and usually enjoy my tea and reading time. This is a nice place to pick up some tasty caffeine and a snack and either work on your laptop (see Grace L's review) or, if the weather permits, relax in the outdoor seating area. Yesterday while going to this coffee shop , I felt pretty unsafe. The staff was not wearing the mask, and when she saw me coming she pulled up her kinda scarf on her face. They are not respecting COVID 19 policies and I can't help but feel frustrated and not wanting to go back again to this place. On top of that, she clearly is not a friendly person, the way she responds to me is kinda rude. I went to Starbucks for a few hours but their AC was on too high, and I was freezing. I did a quick Yelp search for free wifi, and Caffe La Scala popped up. So I walked two blocks and I was there. Dropped in here with a friend looking for something sweet! First off, the atmosphere of this cafe is so cute! The decor is cozy while also being spacious, and the music is really calming (love the Phantom of the Opera music!). I ordered a chai latte and one of the cannolis in the display window. The staff seemed to be a bit tired when I went in. They had to ask me to repeat my order twice and then made a mistake giving me change. The chai latte was absolutely delicious - not too sweet, not too spicy. It was a perfect balance and not too heavy. The canolli felt kind of old. The outer shell was a little stale and the cream had hardened a bit. The citrus peels were a nice touch though. My friend ordered the cheesecake and oh my god it was amazing. I should have gotten that instead because it was creamy and rich. I felt like I could only really have three bites before taking a break because it was so rich. This is a good place to meet up with friends and just relax on a lazy morning. I ordered chai and my friend ordered a coffee. It's attached to an office building so if you need to use the restroom, you have to enter in the hallway. It is kind of neat in that sense because you can sit at the tables in the office complex if that's what you feel like doing. I'm not sure if they have wifi here but I would think this would be a good place to do work or study. Maybe next time, I'll try the food. read more

Here's a real-time review (it's 11p on a Thursday night): I've now been waiting 20 minutes for the sandwich I ordered, and don't even remember what it was right now. I just finished my Americano, which was decent-enough, though at $2.50 for a 12-oz glass isn't the best deal going. Also, it wasn't as hot as it should be. Maybe I can ask for extra-hot next time; I've seen people do this, and it strikes me as living dangerously (not unlike ordering a papaya salad extra-hot)... To my right we have what appears to be a couple on a first date, though there are a couple of open copies of the Bible on the table, and I don't know what to make of that. I'm definitely going to be eavesdropping this conversation... Okay, I got my sandwich. Nothing to rave about. I like my sandwiches with meat and a lot of veggies, and here you can get one or the other, but not both (well, I did ask if they could put turkey on the grilled veggie sandwich, and I was quoted a price of ~$10; I didn't feel like paying that much for a sandwich tonight - or any night for that matter). I chose meat over veggies, and I'm nonplussed with the result. The pizza on the table next to me looks decent, though a little sparse (again, I like meat and a lot of veggies on my pie). Okay, I need to eat and study now, but I'll give this place props for a nice layout, great location (busy street corner with all-glass windows; perfect for people-watching inside and out), being the only East Bay cafe I know of with free WiFi that is open until midnight (1am on the weekend), and having good music (at a reasonably low yet discernable volume). This is my go-to meeting spot in Downtown Walnut Creek. Always dependable, open late when everything else is closed except the bars. I've been coming here since high school, and each time I go in, it's like running into a old friend who you've known for years. Their drinks from mochas to Italian sodas (lime please!) are great, and their desserts are to die for! (try their heavenly Tiramisu or Profiteroles -- yum!). I'd glad they also have standard fare such as sandwiches and salads to balance out the sweet treats. You'll find this place buzzing day or night with students inside on their laptops, conversational group meetings, or friends gathering on the large back patio (complete with fountain). read more

I think we might have found a replacement for steps of Rome. Well, so far this is as close as it gets. I like it. I don't really like walnut creek but I like this place. Old school espresso, Italian side, entrees, tiramisu (real tiramisu) and singing Italians! Ok, no singing Italians but everything else was there. Cappuccino was made true to form. It was perfect. The tiramisu was a 7 out of 10. I'll have to try it a few more times and will do so this year but for now I'll let this review rest here. To be continued... read more

Love this little spot. Much cozier than other places in Walnut Creek (if you know, you know). Great place to sit and read or work. Coffee is really good quality. They have a variety of fresh desserts that are tasty and their wine selection is great, mostly Italian and French. Love that they stay open until 10. Fully recommend. read more

This is one if my favorite cafes in the Bay Area. It has plenty of tables, outlets to charge my laptop, free wifi and great food. I ALWAYS get the tiramisu and HIGHLY recommend it. It is very light, not too sweet and incredibly heavenly! If you're interested in something more savory, the tomato soup and pizza is good. read more
